Leading 14-12 six minutes into the ballgame the WARHAWKS held River Falls scoreless for the next six minutes and ran off 15 straight to take a comfortable 29-12 lead.  RF cut the deficit to 11 points twice in the second half but each time WHITEWATER made longer runs and the lead grew steadily to as many as 37 points, 83-48 with 2 minutes remaining.  The final was 86-54.

Heidi Sontage led all scorers with 27 points (16 1st half).  Sontag was 5 of 6 from beyond the arch and 10-11 from the free throw line.  Sontag also recorded 4 of the team's 20 steals.  Rachael Woolever made 4 three-pointers for 12 points and Nicole Bundy also added a dozen.  WW was 11 of 22 from beyond the arch to equal program records for three point baskets in a game and three point accuracy.   The game had periods of sloppiness as the two teams combined for 56 turnovers with River Falls having 32.

WHITEWATER improve to 4-0 to hold their share of first place in conference play and 13-0 on the season.  The thirteen win streak sets a new program record for consecutive wins.  LaCrosse invades Williams Center Wednesday night.

Smoked 'em, tossed 'em, and then stubbed them out under their heels. I didn't see the game, but one who did said they "looked disorganized."

It's too painful to watch. I hope Mulhern has a plan that isn't obvious to the onlookers but will become so in the near future. Maybe we're lying in the weeds awaiting a second-half-of-the-season ambush.

The Champ

In an unusual start to the game, Coach T apparently didn't like what he saw from the majority of his starters, so had them ride the pine for most of the first half.  All 5 combined garnered only 27 minutes of playing time and only 10 point in the first period.

Half time score....  38 - 33 Stout.  Lisa Grantman of Platteville led all first half scoring with 11, and Stout had Freshman Danielle Dewitt and Shelby Churchill leading the Blue Devil scoring with 7 points each.  Churchill led both teams with 6 rebounds.

In the first 12 minutes of the second half, Platteville outscored the Runnin' Lady Blue Devils 31 - 19 and built a 7 point lead, 64 - 57.

From that point on, the game changed.  Platteville, scoring only 4 points in the last 8 minutes, watched that 7 point lead turn into a 12 point deficit, as Stout, led by the starting 5 scored 23 points.

Top scorer for the game was Lisa Grantman for UWP with 18 points and 11 boards.  Grantman was perfect from the charity stripe hitting 9 of 9 FT's.

After sitting most of the first half, Julia Hirssig had an impressive second half, hitting 15 points and 10 boards in that period alone (a double/double in one half of play).  She totalled 17 points and 11 boards for the game.

Next up, UWL on Saturday.

I was also very confused as to why 4 of the 5 starters only played that first minute of the game.  In Mark's post game interview, he told me that he was indeed upset by starters early play and then players like Churchill, Gerber,  Schaefer, and Dewitt just played so well he just kept them on the floor.  Who can argue with the results?  Hirssig dominated the 2nd half.  A nice win for Stout and don't count them out just yet.  I think this team will compete.

After the next three games, I think we'll know what this team is made of.  Especially the two road games.

Not sayin' that they need to win all three (although that would be my hope... ;D), but they need to play well in all three games.

After looking at mine, after your comment, I realized that the [/quote] that I found to be missing as I was composing my post had somehow found it's way several lines below anything I had typed... ???

The mysteries of the universe can't always be explained.... ;)

I too wondered about the extra space on SG's post... ???

Anyone know why Brittney Hakenson is not playing for EC anymore.

I choose to go with the vacancy notice excuse.  And I also notice that Champ was able to fix his.  He's a bit brighter than me so mine stays as is.

I just went to the EC roster and she is not listed on it.  I have no idea why she is not playing anymore.

By the way, what has happened to the debate a couple years ago about who's freshman class will be better between EC and UWL.  It turns out both haven't been doing a whole lot lately.  I haven't really heard much from UWL besides Hunter.  And, EC's is now basically down to Heidi A and Witt.  Brooke Hakanson transfered last year and now it looks like her sister isn't playing anymore.  Anderson and Mueggenborg have played much less this year than in past years.

Did anybody see Monday's Leader-Telegram? UWEC asked WIAC commish Gary Karner if they could move Saturday's game times vs UW-Whitewater from 3pm and 5pm to 11am and 1pm. UW-Whitewater is coming to Eau Claire on Friday and the Packers play at 3:30 on Saturday. Karner told UWEC No and Karner got told off by the Leader-Telegram in their editorial section. Heaven forbid if a school should ever want to increase their basketball attendance.  ::)

I noticed this was mentioned on the Men's board and also on wissports so it's a hot topic right now.

The Champ

Don't see any reason to change the game times.

The Womens WIAC BB schedule was set long ago.  It's not just the UWEC/UWW game - it's the whole conference schedule:

1/12/08 UW-Whitewater @ UW-Eau Claire  Eau Claire  3:00 PM
1/12/08 UW-La Crosse  @ UW-Stout Menomonie 3:00 PM
1/12/08 UW-Oshkosh @ UW-Superior Superior 1:00 PM
1/12/08 UW-Platteville @ UW-Stevens Point Stevens Point  3:00 PM

The Leader Telegram is being extremely naive if they think that the entire WIAC basketball schedule should revolve around a football team in Green Bay.

Karner made the right call.

If some fans don't care enough about their teams to come and watch them play live vs. recording a game they could watch later - that's their problem.

For those of you that follow the Stout program pretty closely......

How are the three girls from Kimberly playing this season?  I looked at the stats for this years team, but stats can only tell you so much.

It appears that the games in which Van Vreede is playing, she is playing quite a bit (nearly 17 minutes a game) and for the most part playing pretty well.  However it also appears she may have sustained an injury, as she has only played in 8 of 13 games.

Also noticed the Wyngaard sisters are playing here and there as well, with Nikki playing in all 13 games (averaging about 6 minutes) and Becky 8 games.

Can you guys add anymore than just the stats?  Thanks in advance!!!

If both schools were ok with the switch I don't see what difference it should make.   Particularly considering that there is another game being played at 1pm.   And there's no reason they'd have to change all of the games if only EC and WW were making the request.  Though perhaps the problem is with the media outlets that are broadcasting the games, they've paid for the rights, and the rescheduling they'd have to do.  But, whatever, I'm sure everyone will survive.  Fortunately the WARHAWKS are on the road so they won't need to find a replacement timer and I can have my cake and eat it too.

Earlier this season WHITEWATER requested changing the starting time of the games against Superior from 1pm/3pm to 3pm/5pm.   The reason was different though.  In this case there was a shortage of workers (scorer, timer, shot clock operator) who would be available because they are also on the football crew and we had a playoff game that day.  However Superior wasn't interested (and I can't blame them) so I don't think the request ever got to the commissioner.

Champ the PACKERS are not just a football team in Green Bay.  Maybe the Viking are just a football team in Minnesota to their fans but that isn't the way PACKER fans relate to their team.  I'm not saying the WIAC should change but the Leader-Telegram isn't being naive.  It may be fans' problem they can't watch both live but it's going to be UWEC's problem on Saturday too.

It's unfortunate because the game could be a showdown between conference unbeatens and the premiere game of the WIAC women's schedule to date.

The PACKERS and Eau Claire, your two favorites, you must have gotten a charge out of this. :D   Come on, be honest now.  ;)
