No doubt you have to have a little luck too.  It was difficult for Carollo to recruit in the beginning because the program was in such poor shape.  Good players want to play in a successfull program and our's was a far cry from that.  Consequently it took some time for her to get the type of players she needed for her system and the skill level necessary to compete successfully in the WIAC.  The first couple of years she wasn't really getting what she needed.  That is a corner that I believe we have turned now.

Unable to find any willing opponents the WARHAWKS scrimmaged UW-Waukesha last night.  They are generally considered the best program in the in the two year UW system.  But they were small, lacked numbers and, as expected,  WHITEWATER dominated all aspects of the scrimmage.   I give them credit though and I would think the experience will make them a stronger team when they return to playing teams at their level.  And I'm gratefull they were at least willing to accomadate us because despite everything it was beneficial for our players to finally play someone wearing a different uniform.

I don't really know much about the Oshkosh situation nor how long the administration is willing to go with Schumacher.   Their lack of numbers was really surprising to me last year but I thought they improved as the season progressed and were a better team the second time around at least against us.  Tyriver is an excellent player but she didn't have much help.

It's already been determined here by some posters that you basically give mulligans to a coach's WIAC record for his/her first four seasons, because it isn't truly "his/her" team until he/she only has players that he/she has recruited during his/her stint...   ;)

And some people give a coach all the credit for what happens once they get the position, regardless of the fact that their predecessor had run an extremely successful program.

Time to take off your blue and gold glasses for a change and stop spewing sour grapes about Tonja England not getting COY.... :'(

Carollo has made her program better than her predecessor, Englund has made her program worse.

I think we have to take into consideration the programs.  Saying Carollo made the program better when it was awful is one thing, but saying Englund has takin the program down is not fair.  In her third season she was named National Coach of the Year.  She can obviously coach.

It's a Champ/Stout, Englund/Eau Claire thing.   ;D ;)

Using the logic of Champ, then I guess he would think that all you Whitewater football fans here would think Lance Leipold should not get any credit for the success that team has had in the last two seasons, because he inherited all that talent!  ;)

Sorry, but you play the hand you are dealt; a coaching record begins the moment his team plays its first game under his reign, regardless of who is playing on that team... And includes every game, not just divisional/conference records....

Champ - if you want to distort the record, fine with me... I will, however, correct it.

I never said Englund should have won COY, nor are there any sour grapes on my part; in fact, if you bother to check my previous posts, I've said Carollo deserved it.

I have found out some changes in the schedule this year.  One that almost everyone knows is that the women's games will be played 2nd this year during doubleheaders.  This can be a big change since the players and coaches will have to get used to two different schedules.  One game they can show up to the gym and get to warming up, while the other schedule is showing up and watching the men play.  Could be tough to get used to.

The second change that I found is that instead of 8 teams making the WIAC tourny, only 6 will now make it.  Also the men and women will play on the same nights, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so there could be DHs in the tournament.  This is in the WIAC handbook found online.

Carollo has made the UWW program better.

Lisa Stone had a career .824 winning percentage in 12 seasons at UWEC.  She always had a winning program in the WIAC.  Her last 4 seasons at UWEC she was 55 - 9 in WIAC play, including 16 - 0 in her last season.

She led UWEC to 6 of their 9 WWIAC/WIAC and 11 (yes, that's 11 out of 12 years) of UWEC's 14 NCAA Tournament appearances.

On UWEC's website it states that UWEC has 21 consecutive non losing seasons.  FWIW, when Tonja inherited this program it from Stone it was a streak of consecutive winning seasons.

On their website it also brags about 20+ wins in 15 of the last 20 seasons.  Lisa Stone had 11 of those 20+ seasons. Guess who has the other 4?

The quality of the program that Tonja inherited was amazing.  What she has done with it in her tenure at UWEC is not.

I don't think I've mentioned anything about Stout in quite awhile her BW.  I distinctly remember my posts being in support of the UWW WBB coach... ;D

Did you?

The topic was "Carollo was named Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year.".

Can you please show me where you posted on this forum that Carollo deserved THAT honor?

You can't, because you never did.

I guess those grapes aren't sour anymore - they are rotten now...

Are the #1 and #2 seeds getting a bye?  That's the only way that six makes sense.

Yes, the top 2 seeds will get a bye.  Another interesting thing is that they will re-seed after the first round games.  This will give the top seed the easiest road to the finals.  If I am reading the rules correctly, this will operate just like the NFL playoffs.

Can you provide a link to that handbook?  I haven't been able to find it on the WIAC site.  Thanks!

Yup, here it is http://www.wiacsports.com/handbook/index.html .  After you go to the site, I just clicked on Post-season Basketball Tournament Handbook.  I hope I helped!

Champ -
I posted on here that I thought Carollo deserved the WIAC COY Award after last season.

I never weighed in on the WBCA Award, so why would you assume there would be sour grapes? One could, however, logically conclude that I agree she'd deserved the WBCA one, too, since the competion for that award is the D2/D3 women's coaches combined.

Off the top of my head, I can only think of one D2 school - Parkside - that would have been considered along with the D3 coaches... So I've given Carollo her credit, but if you want to keep taking cheap shots, that's fine...

By the way, for those who are not familiar with the WBCA Award, Carollo was not the only one honored; high school boys/girls/assistants and collegiate men's (UWP's Combs and UWW's Miller) and women's are also recognized (at the D1 level, too).

So, you agree that you lied when you posted " in fact, if you bother to check my previous posts, I've said Carollo deserved it.".

The fact that you lied about it, only confirms the stench of sour rotting grapes.
