This one is over

Why the hell would Cole just run out of bounds? Not thinking. He's a Senior, he's got to know better than that. My word.

The clock kept running though, bethel had to use a TO. Not sure why the clock was running on that play. Must be some rule i'm Not aware of

Where are those refs from?

Seriously, 02 I would. I've noticed that many times when the player goes Out of Bounds the clock keeps running. I know that hasn't always been the case. When did it change, and under what circumstances?

One of the guys in the stands educated me on the rule, thankfully before I yelled at Cole. If the runner runs out of bounds while running backwards, the clock keeps running. That's why BU had to call a TO.
Assuming the rule is correct, it was a great move by Cole, except it reduced UWW's rushing stats.

Some random guy in the stands educated you on the rule? You must be joking? Did you give him a breathalyzer first?

I was screaming at my tv while the play was unfolding. I never heard of a rule that states the clock continues to run when a ball carrier, running backward, runs out of bounds intentionally? I've seen the officials keep the clock running when it's obvious the defense is purposefully trying to take a runner out of bounds before falling to the ground and his forward progress has stopped. Whatever happened to taking a knee in the victory formation? That would have been the smart thing to do in this situation. I think what he did was an incredibly risky maneuver. Just take a fricking knee and end the game. The play made no sense and hopefully it's the first & last time we see it happen.

You're wondering if a fan in the UWW stands was drinking?
I think the reason they ran Cole is there would have been a few extra seconds left if they just took a knee.

In college football, the clock stops on an out-of-bounds play only long enough for the officials to set the ball ready to play. The clock then is started again, except in the final two minutes of each half.

The drinking, random fan has it exactly correct. When a player runs out of bounds moving away from the line of scrimmage, it is tantamount to stopped forward progress before he went out of bounds.  Therefore, the clock keeps running. I never knew that until the ref explained it after the play.

The clock does stop momentarily and then is restarted by the white hat unless it is under two minutes than it resumes with the snap.   Every crew is different, some delay the start longer than others.  This crew worked fast.   That is the white hat restarted the clock often before the chains were reset.  Some wait a little longer.  The crew in the Saint Norbert game barely waited for the players to unpile from the tackle.  If the player has been running backward the clocks continues.  As the game clock operator I watch the sideline official to see whether I should stop or leave the clock running.

The crew for Eureka was from Illinois.  The St Norbert crew was from Minnesota and this crew was from Ohio.
