   MIAA Pick 'Em Trivia—Week #1 Edition (Ending 10-Jan-2009), or, Analyzing the Analysts   

Greetings once again, Pick'Em pickers.  You've seen the leader board posted by Commissioner FDF.  Here for your reading amusement are some of the customary statistics, and some new ones, behind that leader board.

POTW--Picker of the Week:  Congrats go to Hopester    8)  for leading the pack with a perfect 8-0 record and 20 confidence points for the week, against a field earning rather ordinary 81.0% GPA (Group Pick Average).  Hopester now stands alone atop the leader board for the season.  17 other pickers had 7-1, with points ranging from 19 to 16.  Yours truly RR earned the unique "distinction" of being the only one of this group to squander his 4 –point pick. 

GPA (Group Pick Average) and GCFA (Group Confidence Point Average):
Wed. Jan 07:  Caught off guard by the Adrian-over-Albion upset, 32 contestants got 94/128 wins correct for a rather unimpressive 73.4% GPA, and got 254/320 confidence points correct for a correspondingly mediocre 79.4% GCFA.
Sat. Jan 10:  Two pickers that showed up for the MIAA opener on Wednesday missed picking this game.  Somewhat split (flummoxed?     ) by the uncertainty of the Olivet-over-Trine affair, 30 active contestants got 107/120 correct for a much-improved 89.2.8% GPA for the day, resulting in a 81.0% GPA for the week, and 283/300  points for a correspondingly better 94.3% GCFA for the day and 86.6% for the week.

Editor's note:  GPA's presented here are based only on the picks of pickers who posted picks.  They do not include the mandatory "o-fer's", or 0-fer-4 scores earned by those who failed to post their picks.  Otherwise, inclusion of o-fer's would pull down the GPA and unfairly penalize the GPA of the pickers who actually posted picks.  Try saying that out loud without spraying your companions. 

GMFPI (Game Most Frequently Picked Incorrectly) and PMFAI (Points Most Frequently Assigned Incorrectly):
Wed. Jan 07:
Adrian over Albion, missed by 27 Briton backers.  58 points incorrectly assigned to Albion.  Bravo to the Bulldogs for earning honors as the upset of the week.  (Actually, the only upset this week.)
34 total incorrect picks, and 66 total confidence points assigned incorrectly, again excluding o-fers.

Sat. Jan 10:
12/30 pickers guessed wrong on Olivet-over-Trine.  Not really an upset.  Congrats to the Comets, though.  14 points incorrectly assigned to Trine.
13 total incorrect picks, and 17 total points assigned incorrectly.

Confidence Rating (New Statistic This Season):
This rating is the percent of maximum possible confidence points that can be assigned to each team for any given day, or 4 points time the number of pickers picking.  This rating gives a relative comparison of confidence in the various teams by consensus of the pickers.

Purely my opinion:
The Adrian Bulldogs are the surprise (dark horse?  dark dog? with apologies to Dark Knight    ) team to win two games this opening week of conference play, and stand alongside Calvin and Hope in first place, and earn honors as my Team of the Week.  Bully! to the Bulldogs.
