   MIAA Pick 'Em Trivia—Week #3 Edition (Ending 24-Jan-2009), or, Analyzing the Analysts   

Greetings once again, Pick'Em pickers.  You've seen the leader board posted by Commissioner FDF.  Here once again is "the rest of the story".

CPOTW—Co-Pickers of the Week:  With upsets aplenty, and pretty rough picking all around, we still have stiff competition this week.  The best anyone could do was 5 wins and 14 confidence points, but believe it or not, 4 pickers accomplished just that to share this week's title.  Props to BogeyMan, Civic Minded, KnightSlappy, and tyrone, our co-pickers of the week.  Way to go, pickers!  8)  Your 15 minutes of fame split four ways comes out to 3 minutes 45 seconds per picker.  Woo-hoo!    BogeyMan's performance was just enough to lift him into a tie for first place in the standings with Week 2 leader Happy Calvin Guy.  KnightSlappy takes over 3rd place, and statguy is 4th.

Just one point off the pace with 5 wins-13 points this week were five more pickers—hope1, hope80, Hopester, yours truly RR, and wiz.  An amazingly high total of 18 pickers had 5 wins, including those mentioned above and those with fewer points.  14 pickers, including part-timers, had 4 or less wins. 

Attendance:  Total of pickers picking this week was 31 for Wed. and 30 for Sat.

GPA (Group Pick Average) and GCPA (Group Confidence Point Average):
Wed. Jan 21: 
With everyone caught off guard by the Olivet-over-Calvin shocker, we still scored 87/124 wins correct for a barely passing 70.2% GPA, and 211/310 points assigned correctly for a marginally failing 68.1% GCPA.

Sat. Jan 24: 
Downright poor picking was rampant this day, with everyone flummoxed by the Alma-over-Olivet upset, most everyone stymied by the Trine-over-Kzoo affair, and 10/30 guessing wrong on the Calvin-over-Albion thriller.  It looks like an outbreak of the "gitters"!     Or could it be a "picking noro-virus" going around?     We scored only 53/120 wins correct for a dismal 44.2% GPA for the day, resulting in a 57.4% GPA for the week, and only 142/300 points for a correspondingly poor 47.3% GCPA for the day and 57.9% for the week.

GMFPI (Games Most Frequently Picked Incorrectly) and PMFAI (Points Most Frequently Assigned Incorrectly):
Wed. Jan 21:
Olivet over Calvin, missed by all 31 pickers.  Congrats to the Comets!  92 points incorrectly assigned to Calvin.  Big upset this day.

Sat. Jan 24:
Alma over Olivet, missed by all 30 pickers.  86 points assigned incorrectly to Olivet.  Props to the Scots.  My upset of the day and week!
Trine over Kalamazoo, missed by 27 pickers.  55 points assigned incorrectly.  Congrats to the Thunder for their first W in MIAA play.

Purely my opinion:
Over on the main MIAA board, several posters have suggested that the picking is down this year.  So far, I have to agree. 
After 3 weeks, our cumulative GPA stands at a failing level of 67.1%.  We could consider this our mid-term grade report.  If that's so, I hope Commissioner FDF is grading on the curve!     More on this in another article.

Not much separation in the standings just yet.  6 teams still in the hunt at the end of Week # 3.  Only one team swept this week, and by scoring 81 points twice.  Go figure.  Congrats to the Flying Dutchmen, my Team of the Week!
