Answer to the quiz is Alex Hudson.  She quit the Loras team right after losing to Coe. I considered her a talented player.

Hate to answer my own question but Gehling has transfered to another school closer to home.

BVU???

One of those western IA NAIA schools?

Big state school and giving up playing hoops?

I think it must be a Junior College, that I had never heard of, can't recall the name but its located in Ames, Iowa.

Nice :D

Changed the name so no one thinks I am still from the east coast.  MIAC might be the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Just joking, for four years I wanted Coe to play Carlton.  You might check my Feb.14, 2010 posting which I try to explain why they (MIAC) gets no respect.  It has to do with their lack of opportunities to play quality outside competition because they have 22 league games and only three nonconference games.

The Game Time League rosters have been posted.

COE PLAYERS

Hannah Breitbach
MacKenzie Reed
Mary Halverson
Kelsey Jipp
Caitlyn Kray
Sarah Waskow
Leslie Ware

SIMPSON

Celsea Rohrs

UNI has 14 players, Iowa has 11, and Coe has the next highest number with 7.  Games are played at the North Liberty Recreation Center 6:00 pm and 7:30 pm.  Wed. from June 22 to July 27 with one Monday game on July 25.

Game Time usually plays twice as many games but there are some conflicts this year that called for an abreviated schedule.

Subject 2:  the NCAA may have pushed the three point line back to 20' 9" from 19' 9".

Musings from the Game Time league last night.

Couldn't find Chelsie Rohrs on the Simpson roster. Appears she is transfering to Simpson from Wayne State.

Coe players had varying degrees of success.  About what I expected.

I was impressed with an Iowa player named Bethany Doolittle.  She is a stringbean 6'4" with a lot of potential to back up and then replace Morgan Johnson.  With a name like Doolittle she has got to be great.

Have seen Doolittle play on numerous occasions while she was at Hill-Murray H.S here in the Twin Cities;
she is going to be a very good player for my alma mater.

Wish I could get down there for the Game Time League.  How did the Breitbach sisters look?

I can't find Thursdays paper and my wife isn't here to tell me the password to get online edition.  From memory (which is pretty shakey) Hannah had a good line something like four out of eight shooting.  My daughter was guarding Kaitlyn when she hit her one for three three pointer.

I you go to the online version of the Daily Iowan you can read about the game and they have a video segment where you can see a flash of Kaitlyn playing she has a white head band on.

If she is a basketball player she must not be a member of my vertically challenged family :D

I wish there were more leagues like this for college kids (and just graduated kids like little Bird Dog)  Way back in the day they had a league like this in Dubuque.  All 3 Dubuque colleges plus UW-Platteville had kids in it and then some D1 players from the area belonged as well.  They took their inspiration from the PTL/GTL.  I don't think it continued once Jon Davison left town in the mid 90's for those few years before returning.

I don't know if it is too late but I have said it here before that it would be nice if more (or all) IIAC teams (or any other League) would entered the Iowa Games.  Iowa State usually has a team, Coe and Central have had teams there.  The adult women's division two years ago (the last time I went) was down to three or four teams. I know in the past Coe has crashed at someone they know (friends apartment or parent) to keep costs down.

The Bird Dog progeny wasn't able to play in the Game Time League (GTL) last year (out of state research project).  Wasn't sure what her schedule would be this summer so she didn't try out.  Showed up to watch last Wed.  One team was short of players.  Surprise Surprise I have my shoes in the car.  Told her that surprise surprise the mouthpiece better be in the car if there is a next time.

Soap box time My daughters high school assistant coach was a dentist.  Their team was required to wear mouthpieces.  He (the dentist) said not only does it save teeth but research shows that concussions (depending where you are hit) may be less severe if you are wearing one.   My children have worn them playing football (required by rule), basketball (required by one coach worn by 2 children not required), and volleyball.

I agree that it would be nice to see more of the Iowa Conf teams playing in the Iowa games. I know that some AAU tournaments offer open divisions where college teams often enter and play against other college teams or teams made up of former college players. The last few years, I've seen UD's team at the shootout in Menomonie, Wis along with UW-River Falls, UW-Superior, UW-Stout and last year there was a team w/former college players like Jolene Anderson (Wisconsin) and Jamie Braun (Indiana) that were playing. I also know of a college summer league that takes place in the Twin Cities and one in Verona, Wis.

The Summer League at the Minneapolis Mid-Town YWCA on Wednesday nights has virtually every MIAC team in there except Bethel and Concordia-Moorhead and also features two WIAC teams - UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire.  Also a smattering of some DII teams as well as former collegiate players.  Makes for an interesting mix.

Hoop junkie where have you been?  I enjoyed all your comments in the 2009-2010 season.  But you haven't posted on this site since Nov. 3, 2010 .  Have you been sick, just got out of the slam, eluding a jealous husband/wife?

It does help to play a game against the DI, DII, and the occasional pro players. The difference between a DI player and a DIII player is the DI is a step faster and 4 inches taller.  I think it really helps the DIII to play against the additional speed and height.

Two years ago Coe sent two teams to the Iowa Games.  One of the Coe teams beat a team of Iowa state players and grads.   I'm sure the DIII played a little harder.  Hoop Junkie's favorite player Kaitlyn Breitbach held Heather Ezell in check (not scoreless but well below what we would have expected her to score).

Enough of this rambling I'm off to the res to let the dogs swim.

Kohawks 17th in WBCA Academic Top 25

Fri, Jul 15, 2011 - [Women's Basketball]

For the fourth time in school history, the Coe women's basketball team was in the WBCA Academic Top 25.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For the fourth time in school history, the Coe women's basketball team was ranked in the WBCA Academic Top 25.  The Kohawks had the 17th best GPA in the country. Coe was one of just three teams ranked in the academic poll, WBCA Top 25 and D3Hoops.com Top 25.

Coe was one of seven schools in the WBCA Academic Top 25 to advance to the NCAA Tournament.  Along with Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Thomas More, Coe advanced to the Sweet 16, the furthest of any of the seven schools in the rankings.

The Kohawks finished the season ranked 13th in the WBCA Top 25 and 14th in the D3Hoops.com Top 25. With a record of 26-4, the Kohawks had the most wins by any men's or women's basketball team in school history.  After winning their first two NCAA Tournament games in school history, the Kohawks finished their season with a 77-74 loss in the Sweet 16 to eventual Final Four participant Illinois Wesleyan.

Coe will return First Team All-Iowa Conference performer Kayla Waskow (Dunkerton, Iowa/Dunkerton) for the 2011-12 season.  Also returning is Leslie Ware (Des Moines, Iowa/Johnston), whom started 25 games for the Kohawks.  Three other players that averaged over 10 minutes a game also return to the squad.

GOOD PLAYERS AND SMART CONGRATULATIONS COE HAWKS.
