I have a question for old timers on here.  When Iowa still had 6x6 high school girls basketball.  How was the transition into 5x5 basketball at the IIAC level?  And how did the IIAC teams do on the national stage back in the day???

Iowa high school started 5v5 in 1985  in 1994 switched completely to 5v5.  IIAC started women's sports in the 1982-83 season.  The top flite girls Lynn Lorenzen and Denise Long went to DI programs.  I remember two girls Becky Grady and Julie Humberg (Julie's married Name) that were defensive players that lead NIACC in offensive catagories around the 80's.
There is a small college called Imaculatta (now a DIII school) that won a bunch of women's national tournaments prior to NCAA sponsoring women's sports.  Now in my opinion it didn't hurt much because most of the country didn't have that great a women's program.  Iowa was was ahead of the game because it had a viable women's program already in place.   The IIAC who's web site (I think it sucks) doesn't go back farther than 1999 to check how the teams did in the 1980s.  I see UNI was once a conference member.

Dubuque leading Central 34-21 with 4:21 left in the 1st half.  Physical play going on down on the floor.  Refs appear to be letting the girls play.

Dubuque up 39-24 over Central at Halftime.

Start mixing those drinks, Klompen.  It's going to be a long night for the Dutch :D

Dubuque wins 71-57 over Central

2010-11 Women's Basketball
School IIAC Pct. All
Simpson (nr/rv)  8-0 1.000 14-3
Coe (rv/rv)  7-1 0.875 14-2
Wartburg (rv/rv)  6-2 0.750 15-2
Buena Vista  4-4 0.500 8-9
Loras  4-4 0.500 8-9
Dubuque  3-5 0.375 6-11
Cornell  2-6 0.250 7-8
Luther  1-7 0.125 5-12
Central  1-7 0.125 4-13
Rankings listed are WBCA/D3hoops.com

Hard to believe we are half way through the conference. Simpson has had a couple of close calls but still has a 20+ margin of victory.  Coe faces a tough road with away games at Simpson, Wartburg, Loras, and Luther.
Wartburg has stumbled twice in a week but has home games with Coe and Simpson that could get them back in the black (and orange).  B.V. gave Simpson a one point scare.   Even though Loras beat U. Dubuque by 20 U. D. appears to have the advantage over Loras because of super fan doolittle dog.
Cornell has suffered from injuries.  One comes back another goes out.  Could be coming together in the second half.

Luther and Central are trailing.   Central got two players back from studying abroad.  With those players back and an endless supply of Dutch Letters they appear to have an advantage in the second half.  The team that can best cope with the planning stages for Nordic Fest and Tulip Festival will prevail.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL (except when playing my daughters team).

UD  over BYE

Simpson has a 20+ margin of victory after a couple of close games Luther gets hammered.  Compliment to Simpson coach, no starter played more than 19 minutes and no reserve had less than 6 minutes.

Loras shakes up starting lineup (three new starters) to beat Central by 12 pts.  Alex Hudson isn't listed in the box score I hope she isn't injured.  Doolittledog do you have any info on the shakeup.  Fortunately they are all under classwomen so its not dumping Seniors.

Wartburg and Coe in a barn burner.

Cornell close and improving.  Looks like a dog fight for the final tournament spot between UD and Cornell.

I've been out of the loop this weekend.  We were in Des Moines swimming for my nephews 6th birthday party.  Pizza, cake, swimming when it's 20 below out, trying to keep an eye on our 3 kids in a jumble of other kids in the pool...not a bad weekend, even though it was basketball free.  My nephew picked a good weekend to have his party since Dubuque had their bye weekend :D

My imaginary money is on Dubuque to have a decent 2nd half to the conference season and get that last conference tourney spot over Cornell.  Once in the tourney, UD and Coe will be tied with less than a minute left in the game.  Leading Bird Dog to mutter "oh no you don't Spartans...not in my daughters senior season you don't"

Cornell up on UD at the half 29-17

Then the Lady Spartans turn things around and get a 53-49 win in Mt. Vernon.

Good job UD!!!

Simpson -x (rv/rv)  11-0 17-3
Coe -x (23/25)  9-1 17-2
Wartburg -x  8-3 17-3

Loras  6-5 10-10
Dubuque  4-6 7-12
Cornell  2-9 7-11
Luther  1-10 5-15
Central  1-10 4-16
x — clinched IIAC Tournament berth

Coe is rated 23/25.  Wartburg was rated 22 and that lasted one game.  It seems Simpson should be rated since they beat Coe and Wartburg.

Loras and BV's tournament magic number is 2 with a combination of wins or a losses by Cornell.

UD appears to have the advantage over Cornell being 2 1/2 games ahead and with Cornell having away games with Simpson and Coe.  Cornell does have the head to head tie breaker.

I wish Hoop Junkie would get out of rehab to stir up some conversation around here.

Is there a big game in the league on Saturday?  I couldn't tell by looking at all the National and regional rankings, along with the conference standings...

If Simpson would have had a Wednesday game, I would like the Kohawks chances a little better.  Right now, the Storm have had a week to prepare for Coe.  Not sure I like those chances.

Prove me wrong ladies.

I'm just glad Coe's game didn't get postponed until Thursday.  I would rather play a game and maintain the continuity.  I don't think Simpson makes that many adjustments.  They seem to press and play Zone against everyone.

Dubuque is now 3 1/2 games ahead of Cornell for the sixth tournament spot.

Did anyone see the Luther V. Wartburg game?  Did Wartburg have an off night or is Luther putting it together late?

Congratulations to Kaitlyn Breitbach  and Sarah Anciaux making the Capital One District 7 All Academic second team.
