with age comes?

Haven't seen Geneseo but a smart well disciplined team that can handle a nasty zone trap press may have a chance  against a very athletic Plattsburgh.  Obviously B-port will be nasty when the whole crew comes back but sometimes it takes a few games to "jell".  Don't ever count out the Lakers from Oswego either, especially at home. It looks like the SUNYAC is the toughest NY league this year, but there is still plenty of basketball to be played.

Mike Deane  - All American at Potsdam State  has won his 400th career win as a college coach.

His Wagner team defeated MD-Eastern Shore  105-86 for their 6th win of the year against 3 defeats.

Mike was an assistant at Plattsburgh during the 75-76 NCAA final four appearance, coached at Delhi Tech, Oswego State, Siena College, Marquette University and Lamar (TX) before ending up at Wagner.  He also had a stint as assistant coach at Michigan State under Jud Heathcoat.    Did I leave anything out Bear fans ?

He was also a pretty fine player, College (pre-D-III) All-American, First College Player to record 1,000 assists in four seasons,  Was Potsdam's All-Time leading scorer when he graduated.  Used to run the prettiest fast break you would ever see.  Signature move was a reverse pivot on the dribble followed by a no-look pass for a layup.  Drafted by Milwaukee (NBA) and last player cut in '74 by the Utah Jazz.  Played semi-pro and CBA while still coaching until the early 80's.  Potsdam won 20+ all three years he played there, against scholarship teams (later D-II) like LeMoyne, Hartwick,Siena).

At Michigan State he was responsible for the development of Scott Skiles into an NBA Star and now head coach.  His replacement when he left to take the head job at Siena was Tom Izzo.

He also has a reputation as a no-bs coach, who graduates his players.  He has led three different teams to the Big Dance, and his Wagner team this year is a favorite in the NEC.

Thanks for the mention, no one has worked harder to get this far.

My congratulations as well to Mike Deane on his 400th win. I was a team manager at Siena for Mike during his first two seasons there (1986-87 and 1987-88) - we were an NIT team my senior year (they waited until I graduated, of course, before going to the NCAAs the following year and beating Stanford!!)

Mike is definitely one of the most interesting people I've ever worked with. It took me a while to get used to his straight-forward approach (he always spoke his mind, had us call him "Mike" instead of "Coach", etc.). Once I got accustomed to his personality, though, he was great to me and a lot of fun to be around. He could still play very well in his early years at Siena, which we got to see on occasion before or after practices or in other pick-up situations.

In my opinion, Mike's greatest strength as a coach was (and is) the ability to make individuals better. I saw him take OK shooters and make them very good ones. I think his in-game coaching skills got better and better each year as well, and Siena's successes indicate that.

I was lucky enough to do some sports info work and basketball camp work at Siena for a couple of years after I graduated, so I got a chance to deal with him even more. I'm glad he's doing well at Wagner and wish him the best this season. I enjoy hearing stories from other posters about Mike's collegiate playing days, which were obviously a little bit before my time.

Williams Pours in 31 Points in Cardinals' Win
ORANGE, Calif. -   Preseason All-American Anthony Williams scored a season-high 31 points to lead all players as No. 14 Plattsburgh State escaped with a 65-63 victory Tuesday over host Chapman University in the Tiger-Panther Classic.  The Cardinals improve to 7-0 while the Panthers fall to 7-4.

Williams scored Plattsburgh's last five points, including a free throw with 1 second left, to ice the victory.  He was 9-of-14 from the field and 10-of-12 at the free throw line.

Ricky Rider also reached double figures with 10 points for the Cardinals, who made 23 of 44 field goal attempts for 52.3 percent.

Chapman was led by Kyle Wood and Jared Kaiser with 16 and 11 points, respectively.  Brian Salanger (8 points) led all rebounders with seven.

Plattsburgh led 26-22 at halftime, and built a 10-point advantage, 51-41, on a Chris Ruiz jumper with 8 minutes and 4 seconds left in the game.

But Chapman battled back and cut the deficit to 64-63 on a pair of free throws by Wood after Williams was whistled for a technical foul with 19 seconds remaining.  The Panthers, however, couldn't get a shot off on the game's final possession.

Just heard that Occidental beat Plattsburgh. Didn't get any specifics on the game.

Figured it would be a tough task to win both games out west. Especially after the Cards had a tough game against Chapman the night before while Oxy took on some creme puff called Pacific Union. I think they were a junior college.

Both Brockport (@ D2 Clarion) and Geneseo (@ Elmira) start their second semester tonight, and the Chase Tournament a week away. The Golden Eagles have six games in 10 days before starting SUNYAC play.
