Potsdam NP game - Dobbs did a great coaching job.

After a NP run put the hawks up 22-12 with 12:00 left in the first half, Dobbs called a TO, put in his entire second team, 1 JUCO, 1 career backup, 1 Jr drafted from the intramural league and two freshmen.  They went on a 12-1 run in the next three minutes to turn the tide.  Potsdam went on to a 10 point half time lead, and extended throughout the second half.  Dobbs emptied the bench with 2:33 left.

Potsdam got half their points from new players, over half the minutes.  Barton had a monster game 18 pts 12 rebs on 8x12 FG in 22 minutes.  Point guard Dave Bisesi had 16 points & 4 assists in 25 minutes.

6'7 frosh Brandon Siskavich had a breakout game as he showed some excellent ball skills, and a sweet mid range jump shot to tally 14 pts on 7x10 and 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals in 20 minutes of court time.

Potsdam had 12 players play at least 8 minutes, and won the battle of the boards 42-37, forced 24 turnovers and held the Hawks to 38% FG 26% 3 FG.

Potsdam makes their first trip out of Potsdam next weekend, facing
two Empire 8 clubs, at Alfred U. on Friday, then on to Ithaca Saturday afternoon in a 4PM tilt.

Cortland exerts mental toughness, actually sharpshooting skills, to down Alfred, 86-76, on the road. Goes to 5-1 with fifth straight, shooting 33x54 (9x20 3s). Pivot S. Taggart 24 pts. (11x12fg), 6 rebs. Four others score double figures: D. Maggiacomo 13 (3x7 3s); S. Skrelja 12, 7 rebs; D. Jutton 12 (4x8 3s); F. Ranieri 10, 4 rebs, 3 assts; D. Fish 5 assts, E. Nalls 5 assts. Dragons lead 46-42 in close first half, extend to 13 seven minutes into 2nd period, hike to 15 and withstand Alfred rush to 7 at 2:52. Maggiacomo `3' repellant. R. Hallett 24 pts. (4 3s) for 2-3 Saxons, who had won two in a row

That score puts the Lakers as the team to beat in the SUNYAC this year.  Perioli, Mims, Burridge, all potential A/C players,

Funny - SUNYAC seems to be more high scoring this year than in the past?

bports

Im not really happy about the port being 1-2 in the conf, but it was very easy to see it coming. They probably started with the toughest 3 game stretch of any sunyac team? Home against cortland , at plattsburgh and at oswego. It sure would have been nice to start with geneseo, fredonia, and lets say NP.  Bport will be on the road some more with games at #5 york, and at #24 catholic for a tourney. These games along with playingall but one game first semester on the road is what whitmore does every year to get his team ready for the sunyac tourney. Its to bad a few players made a bad decision and it will most likely cost them the 1st semester. With that said and the addition of rother this team will be loaded  and will have something to prove in the 2nd semester. Having 9 guys suit up is not to favorable for whitmores system. Especially when 2 of those 9 would not see the court other wise. Whitmore likes to use about 10-12 players all about 18-28 min a game. Even when he had mills, medburry, etc they only played about 25 min a game. This frosh pg from webster is filling in nice for harris but bports defensive pressure all starts up top with a lightning quick harris and that is what this team is missing. Oh well it is what it is .

Ralph Turner

A big shout to the new SID at Plattsburgh, Patrick Stewart!

Patrick did an outstanding job at McMurry in the ASC for 2 1/2 years, covering 19 sports and providing background to the local media, and on the McMurry website.  In addition to the background material for 10 football games, nearly 50 basketball (men's and women's) games and about 15 baseball games that were broadcast on radio each year, he occcasionally had to provide background material to an occasional locally-televised football or basketball game as well.

Plattsburgh is getting a good one.  We hate to lose him, but send him our best wishes!

I believe SUNY-IT will make a big jump this season-I am not saying that they will contend for the sunyac title or finish 1,2, or 3 but they will be much improved.  They have a few juco transfers from CCC, Herkimer, and Mohawk Valley that were all region players that will instantly make them better.  And with Murphy you never know what can happen

ummmmm....It seems like I remember saying that SUNY IT would be much improved this season (refer to my statment above), but so many of you chose to laugh at me.

ILOVEBALL

plattsburgh beats geneseo badly without gibbs smith good team effort the young kids are really stepping up antwan miller is playing well as well as dietz jared dumont was 5 for 7 from the three point line plattsburgh will be just fine as the season rolls on they will be a top four team in the sunyac going into the playoffs

bports

haterinthehouse it is a little early to start boasting about your prediction. sunyit may very well be better this tear but who have they played? They lost to utica and then they beat albany school of pharmacy. They also beat a geneseo team that was picked to finish 10th out of 12 teams in sunyac, and a buff st team that was picked to finish in the middle of the pack.

May our favorite dieties smite us if the posts here get as personally demeaning as those in the Empire 8 - particularly when all we reasonably know, after a couple of league matchups, is that the league, as always, has several weak (possibly horrrible) teams, several rock solid clubs,  a couple of maybes, and at at least one-who-the-hell knows.

Re: SUNY IT, I'm reminded of Richard Farina's "Been down so long, it looks like up to me".
But it is refreshing that one can finally write a positive IT post without a prior need for therapy.

On the other hand, anyone with a "haterinhtehouse" tag may need the occasional hand grenade dropped down his/her shorts/bloomers. But welcome aboard - it's likely to be a wild ride.

John McGraw

It's still early to tell how the conference is going to shake out. Most teams are wrapping up their first semester schedules and the bulk of the conference play isn't going to happen until January.

As per SUNYIT, considering how bad that team was last year WITH Nick Grimmer and Rich Phillips, a 3-1 start overall and a 2-0 conference record is something to be happy about. I think time will tell how good this team really is when they get into the meat of their conference schedule starting January 10 at New Paltz. I'll actually get to see SUNYIT tomorrow night when they play at Hamilton. It will be Coach Tom Murphy's return to Hamilton for the first time since he was asked to retire at the end of the 2003-2004 season.

Elsewhere, Buffalo State's another surprise. Sure the Bengals were picked to finish in the middle of the conference, but they've been putting some serious points on the board. If anything, they're improved over last year's team that barely eeked into the playoffs in Dick Bihr's final year. Fans out at BSC have a lot to be excited about this winter.

Cortland, Potsdam and Oswego are all off to great starts as well. Cortland has won five straight heading into their game tomorrow night with Ithaca at Ben Light. Potsdam I thought would be down slightly this year after graduating so much talent. But, Ernst Ducena has really emerged for the Bears and helped them stay undefeated. Oswego will contend atop the SUNYAC again even without Ponza. Lakers made a statement on Saturday night putting 92 on Brockport after leading by one at the half. Line of the night on Saturday from Brockport coach Nelson Whitmore on WBSU at halftime.

Interviewer: Coach, what did you guys do right in the first half?

Whitmore: (Slight sarcastic tone) Well, we gave up 50 points.

Oneonta and Plattsburgh both have struggled in the early part of the season. I'm a little disappointed Jelani Simmons didn't return to Plattsburgh after seeing him put on an offensive showcase against Potsdam in the SUNYAC Semis last February. The transfers need time to get used to each other and I see the Cardinals finishing in the lower part of the middle half, probably 6th or 7th. Oneonta's 2-3 but after this weekend playing in the Hartwick tournament could be back over .500. OT loss to New Paltz doesn't help the Dragons but last year they started slow and finished the season with a flurry.

Cheap plug...Hamilton vs. SUNYIT tomorrow night on D3hoopsNet. 7:45pm EST for the pre-game, 8:00pm for game time. SUNYIT enters fresh off their five point upset of Buff State in Utica against local rival and undefeated Hamilton. Coach Murphy's return to the Scott Field House. Doesn't get better than that.

John - a little revisionist history re; Last years SUNYAC semis.  Who put on the offensive showcase?

Eldon Harris 25 pts 11 rebounds 2 blocks 2 steals

Jelani Simmons 18 pts 5 rebounds 8 blocks

The Cardinals will be just fine.  Travis Gorham is a steady solid presence in the post, he rebounds, sets picks, plays defense, and scores when the opportunity is there.

And, Mac, it was one year ago, almost to the day, when Tech (and ass't coach Murphy) tripped Hamilton 75-72. One guy of whom Continentals will surely keep tabs is Bien-Aime -- 24 pts, 4x5 3s in that contest
