A very rough night. Drove to Potsdam (130 miles) rather than Oswego (25 miles) just to keep the family peace. My wife is a loyal Bears fan although I can't quite figure out why just lately - or for the last 2 years. But I did want to see Mike Lewis, a local kid now at Cortland play - so I gave up on what was likely to be the better game 'port v. Lakers.

No surprises. Potsdam again failed to play in the first half trailing by 11. Worked hard to cut the lead to 1 with 5 min. remaining. Span called a TO. Dragons answer with a 9-1 run. Game over. Bears consistently fail to protect the ball, play inconsistent defense...you get the picture. Cortland currently undefeated in league play but remain a 2nd tier team behind Brockport and Plattsburg.

Did enjoy seeing Mike Lewis. Unselfish, rebounder, always hustles, able to play physical game. He'll just get better.

Can't  remember seeing a worst crew in the last 5 years. The weakest whistle in 38, you know who, was the best of this 3 man fiasco.  Hey, but it's D3 and we know the vast majority of our beloved officials have reached their terminal velocity. Still, it can be very painful to watch.

Will be interesting to see how the Dragons fare at Plattsburg tomorrow. I expect the Cards to win big even though Cortland was able to cruise for most of the game tonight.  Big game Saturday for the Knghts and Lakers. Both need this one. And  dinner at the Conesus Inn makes for a great day.

Zola, at least you didn't waste your time driving the 25 miles to Oswego only to discover the game was actually at Brockport.  That woulda sucked.  Still, though, 130 miles to Potsdam in the dead of January.  That's some D3 dedication right there...oughta be some kind of medal for that.

Jdex - font of all knowledge in SUNYAC. How could you?

Realize my beloved Bears are struggling, but to leave them out entirely?

Bears are 1-4 SUNYAC 5-8 overall, tied with NP for last playoff spot.

P.S.  Coston is very impressive for Dragons, gives them an athletic presence haven't seen in those quarters for some time. Niehoff and Evans made huge contributions off the bench.

Dragons will be in the mix with Plattsburgh, Brockport, Geneseo.  Since 1 of their two losses is to #1 ranked Rochester, they will be in the mix for an at large bid if they can finish the SUNYAC with 1 or two losses.

Dragons had to play hard with a short rotation (8 players) last night, will be interesting to see how they contend with a very athletic Plattsburgh team and short turn-around.

1st time sunyac poster here.  In regards to Zola's response about Potsdam, I believe after seeing these teams Cortland is just better.  Potsdam has continued to overachieve since Coach Dobbs has taken over at P-dam, ain't easy getting good players to make the trek north, especially with the amount of sunyac teams that can get pretty much get anyone into school with a pulse.  BTW, I do like Cortland, big and strong, could be dangerous to both B-port (whom lost to St. Law., and Potsdam beat St. Lawrence) or Plattsburgh.  Just some thoughts.

To make amends to `thebear' .......

Pdamers as recently voiced on this site proud of M. Deane. Hope they caught this morning's piece on ESPN Gameday. Recent winner of No. 400, Deane was featured with his seatbelt. Bit was launched with storyline the Wagner coach was demonstrative, and this year's new coaching box rule presented problems. To stay under control Dean sits strapped in his chair. Technicals limited to one .......till assessed another this week. Belted chair goes on the road as well. Nice piece. No direct officiating comment, though it was mentioned that fraternity is appreciative.

Of course we followed his storied playing days as a Bear, and heard even more from his roommate -- a Cortlander.

Span molding this team into nice outfit. Tis very, very young. Lewis and Oliver both sophs. Capable size is something the coach hasn't had in a while. Coston has made tremendous strides from a year ago. Evans another frosh continuing to mature. Other than Rochester, Corts haven't  played particularly difficult slate and there's  tendency to go into scoring lulls. Things get tougher today ....
And what's up with Potsdam? Seems like this fall took root the second half of last season.

Another season is fading.  Its tough being a Potsdam fan/Alumni.  Since the glory days the highlights have been few.  After the 04-05 season I thought WOW we are back.  Now once again we are playing with the bottom of SUNYAC.  We can't win big games at Home.  Teams once feared making the long trek to  Maxcy Hall.  Now its another W for someone other then Potsdam. Will the glory days ever return?

thebear

Yeah - although SI publicity may be a bad thing.  M. Deane got double-T'd last game & ejected, wonder if the NYC refs were making a point.  Mike also a former roomy of yours truly in the mid-70's.  Intense to say the least, probably the best X & O's guy you will ever meet, and demands his players go to class and graduate.

Bears have been snake bit, key injuries here, slumps there.  Have been competitive in most contests, but other than opener vs. Ithaca and track meet at SLU, have been unable to finish off top opponents.  Losses to Clarkson, Buff State, Fredonia, Ithaca all had one or more starters DNP, #4 & 5 post players both in civvies for Cortland game.

Agree with Bearnation, used to be the way to Potsdam was Thruway to Syracuse turn North & take a loss.  J. Welsh Gym not nearly as intimidating as the person it was named for.

Also agree with airball55, SUNYAC admissions policy decided by each individual school.  Conference is heavily populated with top players not admitted to Potsdam.  Most players who come here, like it when they get here, stay, and graduate, but it takes a great salesman.

Off to Maxcy to watch Bears vs. SUNYIT with potential SUNYAC ROY Dave Golembiowski.

The other night I was flipping the channels and came across Providence vs UCONN.  Tim Welsh and his squad blew away UCONN on the road.  Potsdam was a basketball hot bed.  Look at the talent and tradition which came out of the little College at the end of the World.  I do believe it will once again happen.  Kudos to both Mike Deane and Tim Welsh. They learned from the best.
