Cortland rips Morrisville, bounding to 30-12 margin midway. CSters in double figures led by W. Coston 16 pts(5x11fg), 3 stls in 29'; J. Miolan 13 pts(6x10fg); C. Dike 14 pts, 7 rebs; T. Kelso 7 rebs, 6 pts. Geneseo 21x52fg. Guests S. Morton 18 pts, M. Baker 11 pts, K. Stevens 11 pts, B. Simpson 10 pts

Back from Potsdam - Geneseo tilt.  Bears missing starting post Brandon Siskavich, and PG Serge Clement, both on bench in sweats & visibly limping.

Geneseo runs out to a 10-2 edge, but Potsdam, led by Damon Brown's 13 first half points (3 NBA 3's) storms back to a 33-25 halftime edge.  Bears played 4 guards and a post, but their athleticism resulted in a 22-10 first half edge on the boards.  Geneseo will have to rebound better against athletic teams if they are to contend in the 'YAC.

Geneseo recovered in the second half, took a brief lead at 44-43, the teams traded baskets for a while, then Potsdam, continuing to drive against the Geneseo zone and parade to the line maintained a 56-55 margin.  Bears then made 4 straight free throws in the last minute to seal the victory.

Scott Morton led Geneseo with 18 on 6-18 shooting as Bears harassed him all over the court with their switching man-to-man and swarming athletic wings.  Brown led Bears with 18, Alvin Dike added 14, and both had 7 rebounds.  Potsdam freshman big tandem Tom Kelso (6-10) and Greg Lothridge (6-11) combined for 10 pts & 11 rebounds in 37 minutes, as Potsdam absent Siskavich countered Knights size (6-8, 6-6, 6-6, 6-5)with athletic quickness.  Potsdam's overall rebou8nding edge was 45-27.

Potsdam hosts Brockport tomorrow on basketball alumni day while Knights travel to Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh State win was the Cardinals 24th straight win against conference opponents dating back to Feb. 17th 2007. 41 points and 12 rebounds by Chris Ruiz will certainly give Scott Morton a a battle for conference player of the week, despite his well publicized shot against Oswego on Tuesday night. (Which was one of the best I've ever seen.) Saturday Morton and Ruiz will go head to head as Geneseo visits Plattsburgh at 4 PM. The winner of that matchup could walk off with player of the week honors, but Morton has to be the favorite with all the publicity his shot received.

Plattsburgh-Brockport battle was typical of the past 6 games these teams have played.(3-3 split)  Cardinals placed 4 guys in double figures tonight. Danny Tangney came off the bench and scored 14 pts on 5-8 fg, 3x5 3s, and Brad Mader also came in and provided a huge lift for the Cards with 13 pts and 14 rebounds(4x6 fg). Starter Errol Daniyan added 14 pts (7x11fg) 7 boards and 3 blocks.

Brockport also placed 4 guys in double figures. In addition to M. Wilkes with 21 and J. Almeida with 20 pts and 11 rebounds, Eamon Kays had 15pts,(5x11 fg) and
7 boards. Joe Clark chipped in with 13 pts,(4x5fg, 3x4 3s)

Overtime was the name of the game in Plattsburgh tonight as the #1 ranked Plattsburgh Cardinal hockey team took on the #7 ranked Oswego Lakers. The Cardinals scored with about a minute left in the 3rd perod to force OT and then won it with 2 minutes to go in the extra session. Hoop and Hockey fans got their money's worth tonight.

Big win for the Potsdam Bears tonight over Geneseo. Just when Geneseo was getting some recognition in the top 25 poll (Their only loss coming into tonight's game was a 2 point setback to #9 Gettysburg) the Bears bring them back down to earth. That's only going to make it tougher for the Cardinal's tomorrow as the Blue Knights won't want to slip up again.

Excellent wins for Plattsburg & in particular Potsdam.  Magic & Bear you 2 have to be pleased. For Potsdam to win without Siskavich & Clement is truly impressive. Maybe Potsdam will get some love in the d3 top 25?  Probably deserve it but probably won't.  Magic if Ruiz keeps putting up numbers like that he won't have to worry about all-league, he'll have to worry about All-American. ;D

Being one of the "old guys" while impressed,  In terms of import, Morton's shot pales in comparison to what we at Potsdam call "The Shot"  - Leroy Witherspoon's 45 foot jump shot with no time remaining in regulation at Augustana, vs. Augustana in the National Championship Game.  This was pre three point rule, so it tied the two teams & the Bears went on to win in OT.

Don't think the Bears are quite ready for any poll votes yet.  Too many ?.  They have to start shooting better than 30%.  They are temporarily reduced to a pair of promising freshmen post players, who are still freshmen.

They also have two tough games Brockport today & SLU on Tuesday then finals.  Their opponent in Orlando on Jan 2 is St. Joseph's (LI) who is undefeated with an average margin of around 20, and a potential All-American in JJ Walsh who is averaging 27 pts & 9 rebs.

In 04-05, it took us forever to even get poll votes, I think we were like 13-0 before we made the polls.

I remember the amazing Leroy Witherspoon's shot in 1981. The difference was that Witherspoon was FACING the basket from half court so we all knew he would make it! Now if he'd made that shot while facing the other way it would have been impressive. ;)

It was a good run for the PlattsburghCardinals.  The magic of 85-86 and 86-87 still stands.  The Bears had two quality wins over the weekend.  I'm going to knock on wood but the Bears may be ready for run this year.  The game Tuesday against St. Lawerence should show where the Bears are in the region. There has been some positive posted about St. Lawerence.  Should be a good game.

The shot by Morton from Geneseo was amazing but it didn't put his team in a postion to win a National Championship

What you looking for?  The best shot? Or the best shot under the circumstances?  That goes to Witherspoon.  The best shot goes to Morton.  I have hit 45 foot shots before (and I am no player) but the best shot?  Thats Mortons hands down.

P.S.  What is really cool is that after the 3, Morton tries to take the charge.  Rare.  Afetr not getting the call, he sprints down and makes a once in a lifetime shot instead of arguing a potantial no call (the right no call).  Even more rare.  Great moment.
