Tough loss for the Cardinals tonight at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh. Tied at 64 with just over a minute left, zebra waves off Chris Ruiz basket for the lead with call of offensive interference by E. Daniyan(which never happened). Panthers go down and score on a layup by Jamal Davis. Ensuing possession by the Cards, with 25 secs. left, Plattsburgh bench called for a technical. B. Rudin makes 1 of 2 fts and Middlebury goes up 67-64. Cardinals' Ruiz misses a 3 and Panthers fouled again. Convert 1 of 2 to go up by 4 and hold on for the win. Cardinals led at the half 33-27 as Panthers closed a 10 pt deficit down to 6. Biggest lead in 2nd period was 6 pt Cards edge, at 58-52 with 5:00 to play. Panthers finally catch Cards at 64 with hoop and 1 by Jamal Davis.   Errol Daniyan leads Cardinals with career high 29 pts. Ruiz adds 15 and Ketema Brooks chips in with 10. Panthers led by 6' 10" Andrew Lock with 16, and Aaron Smith with 13. Kyle Dudley added 11. Davis had 10 pts. including 5 in a row that first tied the game at 64 and then gave them the lead for good at 66-64.

Magic- I have to admit- I am a little disappointed in the 1st semester play of my Eagles because of all the experience that squad still posesses. I know they are better than they showed and hopefully those wins will ignite a second semester run. I don't like to see the P-burg down either because I think Coach Curle does a great job of recruiting and putting quality play on the floor.
Jdex-you must be just south of me about 20 minutes. I am at Exit 246 off of 75. Let's play some golf!

Not a great week for the SUNYAC, eh? Thankfully New Paltz came up with a win to save a little non-conference face.

Caz Bombers

A little parity should be a good thing for followers of SUNYAC hoops - got a little dull the last few years with Brockport and Plattsburgh alternating steamrolling the league (with a little Potsdam mixed in i.e. 2005).  Still shocking to see the Eagles and Cardinals sporting a combined 6-11 record right now.

Is Oneonta really the best team in the conference?  How times change.  What about Fredonia hiding out at 7-2, 1-1; are the Blue Devils for real?

Well if everyone looks at the league, it will go in cycles. There will always be times that teams are slightly down because of admission increases, injuries, etc. Over the past 25 years, there have been stretches of great teams (winning conference tourney, just looking at record books not regular season records) at certain schools. Buff St started it with Bihr in 83-84 (2 years), Potsdam for two years in 85-86, back to the Bengals for 5 years, mix in Fredonia and Bport the next two, back to the Bihr boys for 3, Steve Holmes led Geneseo squad for two years, Spanny at Cortland, Whitmore at Bport for two, back to Bihr's last run, Dobbs at Potsdam for two years, and finally Curle's last three squads.

And if you look at those teams, Buff St had Gettys, Groovers, and Sheppard, Potsdam was Mitchell and Bullock, Buff St was Wolters, Gainey, the famous E-lon-E McCracken, Geneseo was led by Fitch, Cortland was Williams, Bport was Medbury/Hollis/supporting casts, Buff St had a wide range of players that peaked at the right time, Potsdam had Connolly, Harris, Clayton, and finally Platty had Williams/Gorham. All these teams were led by guys that could have/or did play at a higher level. Great players will get you wins. Being a great coach is one thing but if you can't recruit the best players then chances are you won't win (obviously, there are exceptions).

So yes, it is disappointing to see Platty and Bport where they are at but Bport just beat the 25th ranked team on the road without Cantrell Parrish. Watch out for the them come tourney time, they are battle tested as usual. First it was Whitmore and now Dunne with probably some of the toughest scheduling in the SUNYAC.

Slickyquick, I agree with your statement that you need to have 1 or 2 all american type players to be successful. You also have to have a system in place that translates to the success of  the team before the individual.  You also need to have that type of player buy into the system.  There are many players who can play but they never become part of the team.  Also you need to have a deep bench supplied with good role players  that also understand the system.  When you have to make the long weekend journey which a SUNYAC schedule requires the entire team has to be ready to play.  If you were to only count on 1 or 2 maybe 3 guys to be successful, you would be in trouble.  Last night Potsdam made 22 turnovers and lost by 20.  Were they ready to play?  Is the system in place? Have they bought into the system? 0 for the second semester.

Early this year I watched New Platz play SUNY Purchase .  Purchase has a DI and 2 DII transfers.  They were up on New Platz by almost 20. New Platz came back and almost won. New Platz only lost by 3 with a team that is mostly underclassmen. New Platz never gave up and had a nice rotation for their bench. The reason Purchase will not be successful this year is because they have no bench to support these guys.  Each of them played 35+minutes.  Their rotation was 6 and 1 guy played 2 minutes.  This is not the formula for success.
