Buff State's website confirms they are the 2 seed and will play Cortland; Geneseo-BPort in the 1-8.  Interesting interpretation by the SUNYAC, I would have guessed they used the "NFL method" of reverting to Step 1 and H2H whenever the initial tie is broken.

Magicman,

I just checked - the league tiebreaker does start with the 4-way head-to-head. Teams that are still tied after that go to the "how you did vs. the next team down the list, etc." tiebreaker, which means Geneseo should be #1 (by being 1-1 vs. #5 Fredonia) and Buffalo St. should be #2 (by being 0-2 vs. #5 Fredonia). Geneseo and Buffalo St. are not compared in a 2-way head-to-head since the tie for first was a four-team tie, not a two-team tie. The "head-to-head" component of the tiebreaker, therefore, has Geneseo and Buffalo St. even at 3-1.

The official word, of course, will come from the SUNYAC, but my unofficial take on this has 1) Gen, 2) Buff St., 3) Oswego, 4) Oneonta, 5) Fredonia, 6) Potsdam, 7) Cortland and 8 ) Brockport.

Fran,

That's what I come up with as well.

Fran,

It's official. Pairings from the SUNYAC website:

#8 Brockport at #1 Geneseo

#5 Fredonia at #4 Oneonta

#6 Potsdam at #3 Oswego

#7 Cortland at #2 Buffalo St.

This is stupid, to be honest. Why would you break a two-way tie between Geneseo and Buffalo based on anything but their head-to-head game(s)?

I feel like in this case they got to the right conclusion the wrong way.  All things considered, 17-8 Geneseo is probably better than 14-10 Buff State, but the Bengals did beat the Knights.

In this case, IMHO Geneseo would agree with you.  They are drawing the hottest team in the league, who just beat them on Saturday, and the Knights were missing their most athletic starter.  Meanwhile Buff State draws a skidding Cortland team.  I'm sure the Knights would have gladly been the #2 seed, as Brockport can beat anyone in the league the way they are playing.

Also Caz, Buff State had a wretched (0-6) start but has been on a roll since the semester break, I think they're 14-4 in their last 20.

Pat, I think the rationale behind this is that it's not a 2-way tie between Geneseo and Buffalo St., it's a 4-way tie that also includes Oswego and Oneonta. Head-to-head is applied to the 4-way tie, and the teams that remain tied move to the next step after head-to-head.

That said, I definitely see the logic in going to 2-way head-to-head if the 4-way head-to-head still leaves two tied teams.

I'd be curious to see how other leagues handle multiple-team (3 or more) ties. If anyone knows of other league's tiebreakers available online, let me know.

Thanks.
