Fredonia St. falls to Elmira 83-77. Don't think FreddyState saw that one coming. Is Elmira that good? Or are the Blue Devils overrated?

With Potsdam State falling to Utica College 71-62 the Yac is quickly 0-2 against the E8. Hope that's not a sign of things to come.

Scooterman is checking in from sunny Florida. Rumor has it my beloved Eagles opened up the season with a big win up in St. Lawrence. I haven't seen much info about the Eagles, and someone picked them for 9th in the SUNYAC's. Don't sleep on my Eagles because they come to play every night and know how to win. Maybe not many "Players to Watch" list; but a bunch of guys who want to win and will be successful through their effort each time they hit the floor. Congrats to Coach Dunne and his staff for getting the Eagles rolling. Good luck!!!!

Hey scooterman glad to see you're back. And yes, your Eagles did have a good opener today against the Saints. 5 guards for Port all scored in double figures. Eagles don't appear to have much height this year but that didn't hold them back today. Looks like from the box score the Eagles had 1 guy 6'4"  Melquan Trotter play a total of 10 mins. and another big 6'5" Zack McTigue play 2 mins. Everyone else was a guard. 5'10" Josh Zenkel led the Eagles with 15 pts, 6 reb, and 5 assists. 6 ft Jermaine Johnson had 13 pts, 5'8" Andy Marchand scored 12 pts, 6 ft. Francisco Lantigua had 11 pts with 7 boards and 6'2" Greg Schiefen also had 11 pts. 2 other guards had 6 pts and 5 pts leaving a grand total of 2 pts for your big men. Eagles were down 1 69-68 with 1:33 left to play when Johnson hit a 3 with 1:14 left to put Port up 71-69. SLU came down and missed a 3 and fouled Zenkel who hit both FT's with 24 sec. left. SLU then turned it over and fouled Zenker again. He hit 1 of 2 to make it 74-69. SLU hit a 3 to make it 74-72, fouled Zenker again who made 1 of 2 and SLU missed a 3 at the buzzer that would have sent it to OT. Final score was 75-72

Nice win for Brockport to start the season. Saints lost a few key players from last year's NCAA team but did have 6 of their top 8 returning.  I would have picked them to win this game today. SLU comes to Plattsburgh on Dec. 1st so I'll get to see them in a couple of weeks.

FreddyState

Wow Fredonia really blew it last night.  Didn't play any defense and gave up 83 points and 15 three pointers.  To their defense they do have 3 starters out with injury and suspensions but still.  Hopefully they will be 100% by the time sunyac play comes around.  or else all that talking up I did is gonna make me look real stupid hahaha.

(Cooper did play could however for Fredonia 17 pts. and 9 assists)

My guess is Fredonia blew it.  Elmira returned everyone from last year....but from a team that went 4-21!  They did beat Cortland last year and had some promising pieces - Dipiazza? and a solid big that was a tough player but nothing too special.  They should get around 8-10 wins but nothing more than that.  I don't know Fredonia at all but my guess is that was a bad loss but nothing to clean house over.

Cortland opening tonight at home vs. Elmira, whose Eagles soared over Fredonia on the weekend. An earlier post of ours had CState starting ithis Fri/Sat at William tourney.
From afar (FL) we see eight returnees including strong front line of M. Lewis, P. Oliver, C. Milke;  athletic guard in W. Coston, shooter R. Evans plus Manning brothers and N. Sutedjo. Subtracted versatile all star C. Niehoff through graduation. Of frosh handful, four are guards and fifth a slender 6-8 center. Then there's 6-4, 235 sr B. Nagle, a former Dragon football stalwart, and 6-3, 185 sr f C. Vincent from Baldwinsville. Good floor general  seems essential for CState to step up. Certainly missed that force last season with basically same cast (that had leadership at the point) that surprised in '07-08

jdex

So much for Cortland's veteran look. At least thru first half of 45-38 lead over Elmira. Frosh guards Jesse Winter (Rockville Centre) and Jeff LaMont (Hannibal) in starting cast and lead 3-pt 7x13 barrage. LaMont hits 4x8, Winter 1x1. Two other frosh guards -- Jeremy Smith (Bronx) and Harrison Heffle (Greenlawn), also in action. Addition Dustin Marshall (Newfield) another backcourt find with 8 pts, 4 rebs. B. Nagle, P. Oliver, R. Evans also start. M. Lewis off bench. No W. Coston

jdex

New look Cortland routs Elmira 87-67 with an eye-catching backcourt performance. Fr J. LaMont nets 21 pts(7x13fg, 5x11 3s) in 21'. Transfer D. Marshall has 15 pts(5x9fg, 1x1 3), 7 rebs in 22'; J. Winter 8 pts(3x5fg, 2x2 3s) in 21'; J. Smith 9 pts(3x5fg, 2x2 3s). P. Oliver rules inside with 15 pts, 8 rebs in 28'; M. Lewis 12 rebs in 23'. CSt 29x58fg, 11x22 3s, 18x23ft, 43 rebs. Elmira 24x62fg. B. DiPiazzo 14 pts(3x7 3s), J. Anderson 12 pts, D. Nelson 11 pts

OSt 49-43 reb edge. UC's P. Goodman 27 pts(12x21fg, 2x4 3s), 14 rebs in 34'.  J. Patterson 11 pts, 9 asts in 37'; W. Abrams 15 pts in 35'

Geneseo down 44-35 at half.  Finishes 31x58fg, 9x18 3s. Free throwing a difference: Gens 6x10, Meds 22x27. Knight B. Simpson 20 pts(10x14fg), 6 rebs; J. Segarra 12 pts(4x6 3s); M. Hoy 12 pts, K. Plattsburgh down by 10 at the half against Elms and it only got worse as the Blazers stretched their lead to 23 midway through the 2nd half.  86-72 final. Steve Thomas once again led the Cardinal with a double -double of 16 pts (5x9 fg 6x6ft) and 11 rebounds. Errol Daniyan also with 16 pts (5x8 fg 6x8 ft) and 8 boards. Cards only 1 for 13 beyond the arc also had 24 turnovers. Elms is a decent team picked to win their league but the Cardinals didn't play to their abilities tonight. Should have been much closer.

Cardinals host their annual Cardinal Classic this weekend on Sat. and Sun.
RIT vs Husson  6 PM Sat. Nov.21st
Norwich vs Plattsburgh ST. 8 PM Sat.

Third Place game 1 PM Sun. Nov 22nd
Championship game 3 PM Sun.

Fredonia State drops to 0-2 as they fall at Penn State-Behrend 69-65, despite shooting an amazing 83.3% from the field in the 2nd half(15x18, 2x2 3's). The Blue Devils weren't too shabby in the 1st half as well  as  they  shot  57.9% (11x19,6x12 3's). Their fg totals for the game were 26x37, a 70.3% with 8x14 from behind the arc. (57.1%). They held a 30-26 halftime lead but lost the game at the charity stripe as they were whistled for 22 fouls to only 13 for Behrend. For the game the Blue Devils were 5x7 from the line while Behrend was 16 for 19 from the foul line(14x16 in the 2nd half). Brad Cooper led the Blue Devils with 16 pts(6x7fg,2x3 3's 2x2ft), 6rebounds and 5 assists. Amir Billups added 12 pts on 5x6 fg, 2x3 3's. Kyle Mitchell was 4x6 fg, for 9pts and James Kane was 3x4 fg with 8 pts. Chris Saltzman from Behrend led all scorers with 31 pts on 12x19 fg 2x3 3's 5x7 ft. No other Behrend player was in double figures.

Hope those 3 starters that FreddyState said were out come back real soon because
it won't get any easier for the Blue Devils as they next travel to Davidson N.C. to take on the Division I Davidson Wildcats. Wow!!!! GOOD LUCK GUYS. Win a big one for the YAC.
