Fredonia St. quickly reverses early 3-0 lead by Plattsburgh and is never headed in a 10 pt victory that wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Freds up 5 to 10 most of first half and when the Cards cut it to 23-22 with 3:17 to go Blue Devils ended the half on a 6-0 spurt to go into the break up 29-22. Back and forth play early 2nd half but Fredonia edges into a double digit lead and extends it to 19 with 10 minutes left to play. Cardinals close to within 8 with seconds left but too little too late. Once again too many turnovers (15 for Cards to 8 for Freds) and poor shooting especially from behind the arc proved costly for Plattsburgh (18x49 fg 4x17 3's).

Fredonia with 3 in double digits topped by Brad Cooper who led all scorers with 16 pts.(5x10 fg, 1x3 3's 5x5 ft) Julius Bryant had 14 pts (5x10 fg, 4x4 ft) and James Kane added 13 (5x10fg, 3x5 ft). Kyle Mitchell with 9 pts and 7 rebounds

Plattsburgh led by Carl Munnerlyn with 14pts (5x8 fg, 2x4 3's 2x2 ft). Steve Thomas only other Cardinal in double figures with 12 pts (2x6 fg, 1x2 3's 7x7ft)
Errol Daniyan only 9 pts in 32 min. and Chris Ruiz 7pts (2x10fg, 1x3 3's 2x7 ft) in 24 mins.
Blue Devils shot 23x55 fg, 2x12 3's and 16x24 from the stripe. Cardinals grabbed 38 rebounds to 34 for Freds. Blue Devils temporarily in 1st place all alone at 3-0, and 5-4 overall will travel to Oneonta in big game next Friday. Cortland at Oswego later tonight needs a win to keep pace with Fredonia.
Plattsburgh suffers 3rd straight setback and drops to 2-2 in the SUNYAC, 7-4 overall and will host Cortland, then Oswego next weekend which have now turned into must wins.

Yes, yes ....twas New Paltz getting the win at Cortland

Oneonta had enough of a challenge at Oswego, but up to the task. Pulled away from 27-25 halftime lead to forge 14 point gap. Difference still 10 with 1:28 to go when Laker R. Sheridan pair of treys pulled hosts within five at 1:04. Oneonta simply didn't miss from the stripe in final moments. B. Beckford, M. Grimes and B. Hooks were perfect then, the latter sinking RDragons last six points. Grimes 19 pts(5x7fg), 8 rebs; Hooks 18 pts(3x5 3s); Beckford 15 pts, 5 assts, 5 stls; T. Talbot 11 pts, 4 assts. jdex,

Cortland loss at home is tough to take. With the home court edge going into tonight's games 14-5 in favor of the home team, defending your home court has become imperative in the YAC. Both road teams are winners tonight and I expected Oneonta to get it done against the Lakers but your Red Dragons were clearly the favorites against the Hawks. After my Cardinals went on the road back in December and came away with 2 big wins over New Paltz and Oneonta I thought we were in the driver's seat early on, but last weekend proved just how tough it can be to get a road win no matter who you face. Shades of last year. I think it's Fredonia's turn to discover that this coming weekend. If they go 1-1 their coach will probably be happy with that. Cortland makes the trip north this weekend and I'm looking forward to the the Friday matchup at Memorial Hall against Plattsburgh. Cardinals could be healthy with 2 key reserves coming back after missing last week's games. Brockport could be alone in 1st place with their 1 loss after Saturday night since they are in the Wendy's Classic tournament and don't have another conference matchup until the 19th against Fredonia. I'll give you the scoop on the Red Dragons-Cardinals game when I get home Friday night. Heard you're a little chilly in Florida this week.. :D It's only 2 below up here tonight!!

Magic:

For sure Cortland stock falling but fast. Must be disappointing bigtime to Span. Had won four straight with some lights out play to finish first semester. Dragons someplace lost shooting eye. And to lose at home last night to the far-traveliing New Paltzers -- know Corts always cringe over that mid-week hike. But a salute to the Hawks. Frontline vet personnel very good and capable!!Now for CState @#$%&! What the %&*!@#$! One thing jumps out, even from this distance, M. Lewis has become non-factor. For whatever reason, a DNP next to his name last night. But his figures and court time limited all season. He, P. Oliver and solid addition B. Nagle and C. Milke off bench formed good frontline. Backcourt and offense certainly solidified with newcomers J. Winter, J. LaMont, D. Marshall, Smith, joining comer B. Manning and streaky R. Evans. Recent slump doesn't bode well for trip to north country vs. your Cards, who seem ripe to flash some attitude.

Still like the Burghers and Oneonta. And Buffs appear to have the real goods. Stats would seem to indicate more discipline ..... fewer threes (though J. Simmons has green light for good reason) and turnovers. Confidence growing. Jury still out on Freds ......but playing well and evidently they believe!!

Except for Pdam .....on any given night ......

Yeah, Lewis is a puzzle. When I saw him play two years ago at Plattsburgh against a team that ran the table that year in the YAC, I thought with normal improvement his next 2 years could be huge. He averaged 12.9 ppg and 7.1 rpg that year and had 25 pts and 8 boards against Plattsburgh that night going up against the Cardinals Khylan Hunt and All -Conference Travis Gorham. Last year a number of us thought that Cortland was the obvious successor to Plattsburgh as the conference leaders. But as you know the guard play of the Red Dragons last year was deficient and that was probably why Lewis' production  dipped to 10.1 ppg instead of increasing. His rebounding went up a bit to 7.9 rpg. Having started 52 of 56 games the past 2 years it's hard to believe  he has yet to start a game this year. His minutes have been reduced to a little more than half of what he used to average. His numbers this year, 4.6 ppg and 4.8 rpg are less than he put up his freshman year at Cortland (6.5ppg & 5.5rpg). Either he's playing through some nagging injury that limits his minutes on the court or he's deep in Spanbauer's doghouse. Thought for sure you'd know the answer to the Lewis situation.
