My Eagles go on the road and win a tight ballgame at Geneseo. Don't let the first semester record fool everyone. The Bport boys will be there at the end of the season. Alot of new faces, finding right rotations, and gaining confidence in each other, will bring the Eagles into contention. Coach Dunne and his staff wll have them rounded into contention(SUNYAC) shape. Go Eagles!!!!

Potsdam traveled to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. to take on Kings College in the 1st round of the PNC/Ramada Inn Classic hosted by the Monarchs and were defeated by a score of 86-72.
The Bears made a game of it throughout the 1st half and were down 36-34 when Kings sank a 3 at the buzzer to go into the break up 39-34. Kings came out of the break with an old fashioned 3 pt play and followed that up with 3 long distance baskets to quickly go up by double digits and Potsdam never threatened after that. The Monarchs largest lead was 24, at 84-60 and the Bears ended the game on a 12-2 spurt to reduce the final margin to 14 pts.
Anthony Williams led Potsdam with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman Rob Duquette had 13 pts. and Eddie Cross had 10. Kevin Conroy of Kings was the game's leading scorer with 23 pts.

Potsdam will now take on Brooklyn College in the consolation game at 1 PM on Saturday.

Kings will play Salisbury in the Championship game on Saturday at 3 PM.

Salisbury is coached by former SUNYAC player and coach Steve Holmes. Steve played his college hoops at Plattsburgh State, was an assistant coach under Jerry Welch at Potsdam State during the golden years, and was the head coach at Geneseo for 6 years before moving to Salisbury.

Buffalo St and Elms College played a barnburner in a first round game at the Worchester St. tournament.  Up by 5 with 2:41 left to play in regulation the Bengals fail to hold the lead and miss an opportunity to win it with the last shot in the final 15 seconds. Tied at 77 after regulation, Elms quickly grabs the lead in OT and holds an 86-81 lead with 27 seconds to play. 2 Bengal free throws followed by a Jake Simmons layup with 14 seconds left cut the lead to 1. Buffalo St sends Elms to the line where they make the 1st, miss the 2nd and the Bengals Anthony Hamer scores at the buzzer to send it to double OT, tied at 87. This time the Bengals jump out to a 3 pt lead 91-88 and are never headed. Up 93-92 with a minute to play Buffalo's T. O. Jackson hits a jumper and the Bengals hit 3 of 4 from the line to win it 98-92.
Bengals place 4 guys in double figures led by Chris Cartwright with 20 pts. Jake Simmons had 18 pts, Justin Mitchell had 16 pts, and T.O. Jackson added 15.
Elms Brittain Purcelle led all scorers with 31 pts. Bryant Corcoran added 21 and Daniel Gonzalez chipped in with 18.

Buffalo St will now play Colby-Sawyer on Sunday afternoon in the Championship game at 2 PM. Colby-Sawyer defeated host Worcester St. 75-61. Elms and Worchester St will face off in the consolation game at 12 noon on Sunday.

Magicman. I was at the game and i must admit...I probably could not have described the game better myself. Except for the following.. that I must add with a tad stronger description.

With 27 seconds left in the 1st OT, Elms made 2 free throws and went up by 5 pts. It looked grim for the BENGALS. No time outs left and needing to score... get a stop and score again to have a chance. Purcell free throw that put ELMS up by 5, was immediatly followed by a substitution by ELMS. The problem for the Blazers was that the person who was substituted for did not come out of the game until after the ball was thrown in. 6 players on the floor = Technical foul and 2 freethrows by Chris Cartwright (who I might add...CALMLY sank BOTH!!!). Bengals get the ball and Jake Simmons scores with 14 seconds left and now the BENGALS are down by 1 after scoring 4 unanswered in 13 seconds.. Bengals foul Avant who makes the first and misses the second. Anthony Hamer 5'6" a.k.a. "ANT" who had subbed for Norman Simmons ( who injured his wrist) goes coast to coast and puts 1 high over the outstreatched arms of Julio Alverio ( who had 7 blocks in the game). Ties the game with .5 left sending the game into Double OT!

The rest is history!!!!

P.s. Magicman you can get an upclose look at Elms. They play your beloved Cardinals at Plattsburgh on Jan 5th. ;)

Bengalsrule,
Thanks for the update on the Elms game. Not only do we play Elms on Jan. 5th but we get them the night after we face the 5th ranked Middlebury Panthers. It's that rare Tuesday-Wednesday back to back non-conference opponents matchups. Can't even remember when we've had that kind of scheduling before. And we're getting them after a month's layoff. Last year we lost to these 2 teams but both games were on the road.

Knowing we've got a game with Elms coming up was the reason I followed the Bengals game on Live Stats on Saturday. I must admit I was a little confused because in overtime the Live Stats stopped working with Elms holding that 5 pt lead with seconds to play and I actually thought the game was over. At least 15 minutes went by so I went to the SUNYAC board and started typing up a report of the game. I was just about to post it when I went back to the Live Stats page to check on a statistic and sonofagun, if they don't show the game being tied. When I tried to find out what happened there was no mention of a technical foul, how Buffalo State even got to the foul line, or how they got the ball back for the Jake Simmons layup that made it a 1 point game. All I knew was they made 2 foul shots, Simmons made the layup, Elms made 1 of 2 free throws and Hamer made a layup at the buzzer. They tied it up and double OT was about to start. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, but damn glad that I was.

What a break for the Bengals to get the foul shots and possession. The old 6 men on the court penalty. Can't remember if I've ever seen that one called before. :D

Hopefully Buffalo St. can beat Colby-Sawyer this afternoon and win the tournament. Did you stay overnight to take in the Sunday game as well? Good luck and have a safe trip home.

I think Buffalo State wins the championship of the Worcester State Coaches for Cancer Holiday Tournament against Colby-Sawyer. Lost the video with 23 seconds to go but the Bengals were up 77-72 and shooting foul shots.

Final score was 79-76 for the good guys. Nice job Buffalo St.

Buffalo State had 3 players in double figures in their win over Colby Sawyer. Jake Simmons scored 20 pts as he hit 6x13 from beyond the arc and was named as the tournaments Most Valuable Player. Chris Cartwright who scored 20 pts yesterday against Elms and had 9 pts, 3 steals, 2 assists, and 3 boards today against Colby-Sawyer was also named to the All Tournament team. Glenroy Carr came off the bench to score 12 pts as did Ahmed Nagaya who added 10 pts.

Bengals move to 6-2 on the year and are off until January 7th when they resume conference play with a trip to New Paltz for an important SUNYAC contest.

Definitly stayed overnight (my niece goes to Worcester State so I had some family time) and I was present to see the BENGALS take the crown. I must admit that this was one of the better tournaments I have ever seen.

Banquet Friday night with all 4 teams. Organizers set it up so that each table of 8 had 2 players from each team. Since it was a Coaches vs Cancer tourney the guest speaker was a young cancer survivor and it ended with the entire video replay of Jimmy V"s 1993 ESPY award speech "dont ever give up".

With all but a handful of Non Conference Games played, here's how I see the East shaping up:
These are my top 6 based on early results and projected schedule

Oswego - Team to beat in the 'yac, Quality wins over Ithaca and Buff State.  Burridge may be the best all around player in the region, and Gilkes is a force in the paint.  They have bigs on the bench that could start for most teams in the region.

Naz - Loss to Ithaca hurts, split with Rochester, beat Buff State

Stevens - Will see how they do on the road in Upstate NY

Ithaca - Oswego has a game in hand, PS-Behrend loss is in-region.  Bombers can score, but can they defend?

Hobart - losses to Ithaca & Rochester, beat Geneseo.  Pebole makes them team to beat in LL right now.

Plattsburgh - W.Ct loss is Out of Region, but quality foe. Cards need to beat both Buff St or Oswego on the Road to keep their top spot in the 'yac.  Cards have the talent and the history.

Still in the hunt

NYU (7-0 vs. undistinguished foes), Buff State, Geneseo, Union, Clarkson, Rochester, Hamilton.

Bears alas, are still going through growing pains with young team.
