Bengalsrule,
Thanks for the update on the Elms game. Not only do we play Elms on Jan. 5th but we get them the night after we face the 5th ranked Middlebury Panthers. It's that rare Tuesday-Wednesday back to back non-conference opponents matchups. Can't even remember when we've had that kind of scheduling before. And we're getting them after a month's layoff. Last year we lost to these 2 teams but both games were on the road.

Here's 1 vote for the Cardinals sweeping the Middlebury/Elms doubleheader! I must admit that the Assistant coach for Elms took great pride in telling me in the hallway (during the Colby-Sawyer vs. Worcester game Sat night) how they beat Plattsburgh last year in the season opener at ELMS. "Payback is a......". Quality wins for the SUNYAC help us all! Go CARDS!!!

Plattsburgh State moves up 2 spots to #20 in the D3hoops Top 25 Men's Basketball Poll. The Cardinals received 84 points in this weeks poll. New York University with 21 points which put them in 29th place is the only other East region team to receive votes.

Oswego State improves to 6-1 with a 70-53 defeat of visiting Morrisville State. Lakers opened up an early 22-4 lead and coasted from there. Chad Burridge with 18 pts and 8 rebounds led Oswego. Jose Uribe added 17 pts, 6 boards, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Chris gilkes had 10 pts in 11 minutes on 5x8 shooting. Hayden Ward came off the bench and scored 9 pts, with 7 rebounds in 20 minutes of work.
Oswego is now off until Wednesday January 5th when they host St. Lawrence at 8 PM.

A new D3hoops Top 25 poll came out this evening and Plattsburgh State slipped 1 spot from 20th place down to #21. The Cardinals did however gain 29 more points than they had last week as they received 113 pts, their highest total of the season so far. Being idle for 31 straight days doesn't help if you're trying to hold your position, and unless teams ranked just above you lose, there's no way you can move up. The first week in January will be an important one for Plattsburgh, and will have a big impact on how the voters view the Cardinals on a national scale. With 4 games in 5 days and the toughest one coming on January 4th against 5th ranked Middlebury(the 1st game after that long 31 day layoff), I hope the Cards can weather this tough stretch of their schedule.

Finally after a 30 day layoff I'll get to see some hoops as #6 Middlebury rolls into Plattsburgh to take on the #22 ranked Cardinals at Plattsburgh State's Memorial Hall at 8 PM tonight. For anyone wishing to follow the action online there will be live stats available at this link:

Other SUNYAC teams in action tonight:

Brockport State is hosting St. Lawrence at 7 PM

Potsdam State travels down to Hobart to take on the Statesmen at 8 PM

Last night Geneseo traveled to D'Youville and improved to 6-2 with a 64-61 win over the Spartans. The Blue Knights led from start to finish and had their biggest lead, 42-31, as a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Geneseo's Thomas Decker ended the 1st half. Spartans quickly closed the gap in the 2nd period and got it down to 1 pt with 1:37 to play but missed a free throw that would have tied the score. Geneseo then went to the line with just seconds remaining and converted a pair for the final 3 point margin. Ryan Riefenhauser led the Blue Knights with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Mike Hoy added 10 points for Geneseo. D'Youville's Patrick Coyle led the Spartans with a TRIPLE-double of 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 blocked shots.
Geneseo is off until this weekend when they travel north to take on Plattsburgh on Friday and Potsdam on Saturday.

Oneonta State was also in action last night as they dropped a non-conference game to a pretty good Washington and Lee team from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, 75-62. Oneonta hung with the Generals throughout most of the 1st half and actually had the lead 18-17 with 5:57 remaining in the period. The Generals however closed the half with a 13-3 run to go into the break up 30-21.
Down by 12 early in the 2nd, the Red Dragons closed to within 3 at 39-36 with 14:40 to play, but Washington and Lee scored 7 unanswered points to once again gain a double digit lead. Red Dragons got it down to 6 on 2 more occasions but the Generals responded each time and built their lead to a high of 16. Oneonta got killed on the boards 35-20 as the Generals grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and converted a number of them into 2nd chance points.
Brian Hooks with 16 points and Shane Gillette with 11 were the top scorers for Oneonta as they fell to 2-7 on the season. Red Dragons will be in action again this Friday when they host Fredonia State and then on Saturday when Buffalo State comes to town.

Bengalsrule,
I sure hope your prediction is right. (For a change. ;D)   I'm thinking more like Cards win, 79-76.

magicman

Just returned from watching #22 Plattsburgh State take on #6 Middlebury at Memorial Hall. The boys from Vermont were just too tough tonight and managed to outshoot and out-rebound the Cards on their home floor to come away with an 88-82 win in the marquee matchup of Division 3 Hoops tonight. I don't know if anybody is going to out-rebound the Panthers this year with the front line they put on the floor. Maybe Williams or Amherst might but there's not many D3 teams with a starting five of 6'10", 6'8",  6'4", 6'3," and 6'2".

Middlebury came out of the blocks in a hurry and quickly grabbed a 9-2 advantage after the first few minutes of play. Plattsburgh came back with a 12-0 run that featured back to back old fashioned 3 point plays by Steve Thomas and Chris Ruiz. That gave the Cards a 14-9 lead which would match their biggest lead of the night. Seven more lead changes and a tie would follow until the Panthers went up 37-33 on an alley-oop dunk by Andrew Locke on a nice feed from Jake Wolfin with a minute to play in the half. Thomas then drove to the hoop for a layup and as the Panthers were trying to position themselves for the final shot of the period, Carl Munnerlyn stole the ball and Thomas hit a jump shot at the buzzer to send the teams into the break tied at 37.

The teams continued to trade baskets through the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half with Middlebury gaining a slight advantage in that they maintained a 1 or 2 possession lead. The turning point of the game came with about 7 minutes left to play and it was an old nemesis of the Cardinals, foul shooting, which was partly responsible. Plattsburgh had made 6 of 7 free throws in the 1st half but they were down 59-55 when they made three trips to the line for 2 shot fouls over the next 1:56. They missed 5 straight free throws before making 1 and that would have kept the game a 1 or 2 possession contest. Instead the Panthers scored after each of the Cards free throw trips, and quickly had the first double digit lead by either team at 70-59. The Cardinals continued to fall further behind and then with 1:53 remaining, Cardinal Guard Josh Bruno, who had 14 minutes of playing time at that point, re-entered the game. Bruno had taken 3 shots earlier in the game, all from behind the arc and made all 3. He promptly proceeds to hit another triple with 1:43 left, then steals the ball, makes a layup is fouled and hits the free throw at the 1:21 mark for another 3 point play. With 33 seconds left he nails another 3 pointer, is fouled and makes the free throw to complete the 4 point play. With 21 seconds left he is fouled again and makes both foul shots(Damn only 2 pts). The Cards get another steal and Bruno, this time from about 3 feet behind the line nails another 3 pointer with 16 seconds left on the clock, to complete a run of 15 pts in ONE MINUTE AND 37 SECONDS. Josh ended up playing 16 minutes in the game and he tied Ryan Wholey of the Panthers for the game's scoring honors with 24. Bruno was a perfect 7x7 from the field and 6x6 from 3 point land. Strangely enough when the Cards missed those 5 free throws in a row, he missed 2 of them( both spun out) but did make his next 4 attempts. Bruno's heroics did bring the Cardinals back from a double digit deficit and made the final score of 88-82 a bit more respectable. Even Panther coach Jeff Brown got a touch nervous as he watched a 16 pt lead dwindle to 5, forcing him to call a time out with just a few seconds left. It seems to me that 15 points scored by an individual in 97 seconds (and it's not by a player that is on a winning team and is repeatedly being fouled so most of his points are coming as free throws) should be some kind of record. It's probably not, but it sure was fun to watch.

In addition to Bruno's 24 pts, the Cardinals had 3 other players in double figures. Carl Munnerlyn had 16 pts (6x12 fg, 4x9 3's,), Steve Thomas had 14 pts (5x10 fg, 0x1 3's 4x5 ft) plus Errol Daniyan managed a double-double with 12 pts (5x13 fg, 2x3 ft) and 10 rebounds. The Cardinals shot 29x67 (43.3%) from the field, 11x11 (50%) from beyond the arc and 13x19 (68.4%) from the foul line. The Panthers won the rebound battle 44 to 35 and both teams committed only 12 turnovers apiece. Strange statistic of the night: Middlebury leads the nation in blocked shots but tonight they only had 3, while  the Cardinals had 4, ( 3 by Daniyan) against the Panthers.

Middlebury also had 4 players in double figures. Ryan Wholey scored 24 pts (9x15 fg, 5x9 3's, 1x3 ft) along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Ryan Sharry and Jake Wolfin both managed double-doubles. Sharry had 14 pts (5x12 fg, 1x2 3's, 3x7 ft) along with 13 rebounds, while Wolfin had 12 pts (4x10 fg, 2x6 3's, 2x2 ft) and 10 assists. Andrew Locke had 11 pts (5x7 fg, 1x2 ft), 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Joey Kizel just missed a double-double with 10 assists and a perfect 9 points (2x2 fg, 1x1 3's, 4x4 ft). Panthers shot 31x63 (49.2%) from the field, 10x23 (43.5%) from 3 point land and 16x28 from the foul line.

Plattsburgh now 6-2, in the midst of a 4 games in 5 days stretch, is right back at it Wednesday night taking on another solid D3 team as the Blazers from Elms College will pay a visit to Memorial Hall at 6 PM.

Middlebury improves to 8-0 and returns to action on Thursday evening as they travel to Colby-Sawyer  for a 7 PM matchup.

Brockport State defeats visiting St. Lawrence 75-71. Gerald Williams and Kyheem Green both scored 20 points to lead the Golden Eagles to the win. Down 16-13 the Eagles went on a 12-0 run to grab a 9 point lead 25-16 and the Larries never caught them after that. Brockport was up 40-34 at the half and increased their lead in the 2nd period to as much as 13 on several occasions before allowing the Saints to close the gap to 4  with a 3 pointer at the buzzer. Francisco Lantigua was a perfect 2x2 from the field and 12x12 from the line to total 16 points.
Ralph Temgoua was the games high scorer as he led the Saints with 22 points.

Brockport makes the long trip up to Northern New York this weekend visiting Potsdam on Friday evening and renewing their rivalry with Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon.

Potsdam State got hammered by Hobart on Tuesday night, 92-59. Potsdam had an early 14-10 lead but a 21-3 run by the Statesmen gave them a double digit lead that would only grow larger as they went into the break up 48-27. They quickly built the lead up to 30 at the start of the 2nd half and coasted home for the 33 point win. Matt Pebole once again led Hobart and was the game's leading scorer with 19 points. The Statesmen had 3 other players in double figures. Potsdam was led by Curtis Pierce who had 17 points and 9 rebounds. No freshman big man Rob Duquette?

Potsdam plays host to Brockport on Friday night and Geneseo on Saturday afternoon.

Good prediction on the score. Only off a point on the high side. Can't get much better than that. Wrong team won though. :( Was a good game to watch as both teams played some good bball. Elms College tonight We need to get back on track. Hopefully the Blazers will be more accomodating.

Tough 1 there magicman. Tonites game vs. Elms should end on a better note. Purcell (make him go left or he will kill you!) and Alveria (a beast on the glass and in the paint but foul prone) make that team go however I noticed that the Bruno kid (for Middlebury) hurt your guys from the 3 pt arc (6 for 6). Beware of Daniel Gonzalez for ELMS. This kid has attempted twice as many 3 pt shots (74) than 2 ptrs (34). Against my BENGALS 12 of his 17 shots were from beyond the arc. If there is an opening he's gonna take advantage of it.

Lastly..get ready for a pre-game ritual by ELMS that rivals what the UNIVERSITY of HAWAII football team does! Plenty shouting and antics (doesnt necessarily translate into victories though)!

Good luck tonite!!!

That pre-game ritual is called "the haka"  It originates with the Maori's (first peoples of New Zealand).
The New Zealand national rugby team "The All Blacks" does it before each game to scare the other team and get the spirits on their side.  I've seen many other teams in various sports copy this routine.

Still think that Oswego is the team to beat in the SUNYAC.  They have so much quality size in the post, and some deadly outside shooters.

Bears are clearly on the schneid, fortunately I'm going to California for 10 days so I can try to fugettaboutit.

Happy New Year.
