Wifey is taking 13 kids to a music industry trade show in Anaheim.  I'm the roadie, gofer, chauffeur, budget analyst, computer operator, bail bondsman (seriously - really good kids on this trip) etc.

Provided we get out of JFK on Saturday, spending 8 days in Anaheim/San Diego, able to wear, shorts, short sleeved shirts, crocs etc, which we won't see in the 'dam until April.  My daughter called from SD last week, said they were having a winter storm, temps in high 50's and rain.  I LAUGHED.

Duquette was on the bench in civvies vs. Hobart, don't know what the issue is, but often there are a lot of muscle pulls etc coming back from vacation.

Tough night for Plattsburgh State as they fall to Elms College 70-58. Not much to say about the Cardinals performance tonight that is positive. Poor shooting from the floor 20x54 (37%), from in back of the arc, 5x19( 26.3%) and the line 13x23 (56.5%), along with 19 turnovers usually results in a loss. About the only thing the Cardinals won was the battle of the boards (44-35) and that was due to Errol Daniyan's double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds. Both of those numbers were game highs but unfortunately Errol didn't have much help. None of Plattsburgh other big guns hit double figures, and defensively the Cardinals allowed far too many easy buckets. Plattsburgh's 1-2 scoring punch of Chris Ruiz and Steve Thomas were a combined 3x19 from the floor and 1x8 from 3 point land.  Don't know if it was the after effects of a tough loss to Middlebury on Tuesday, a lack of conditioning after a 30 day layoff, or the fact that Plattsburgh played, arguably their toughest 2 opponents on back to back days after that long layoff, but the team looked flat. Poor passing, poor shot selection, and at times a lack of focus by the players on both ends of the floor just isn't going to get it done. This team should be playing better basketball than it has played all year long. Even in games that the Cardinals have won, too many times they have let the opposition hang around by allowing double digit leads to disappear. The only other positive is tonight's loss was not a regional game so it won't hurt us in that respect, but our national ranking will probably evaporate with back to back losses.
Hopefully the Cardinals will regroup after a day off and get ready to take care of business this weekend as Geneseo and then Brockport come to town.

Oswego gets upset by visiting St. Lawrence 58-57. If someone told me that SLU's leading scorer Ralph Temgoua would go 1x10 from the field and only score 2 pts, there's no way I'd figure the Saints could win this game. Neither team could gain much of an advantage and the Saints were down 4 with 1:18 to play when a 3 pointer by SLU cut it to 1. The Lakers took a timeout and out of the break missed a jumper with 53 seconds left. Saints rebounded that miss and took a shot with a dozen ticks left, missed it but got the offensive rebound, missed another shot with 9 seconds left but again got the rebound. Had a layup attempt with 6 seconds remaining, missed it but SLU's Nick Meunier was there for the tipin with 3 seconds left and the 58-57 lead. Oswego called another timeout but turned it over to end the game. SLU got 4 attempts in 9 seconds to convert the winning basket. That must have been tough for the home crowd to take.
Chad Burridge led the Lakers and was the game's leading scorer with 19 points. Connor Monaghan had 14 and Ryan Sheridan added 10.
St. Lawrence was led by Garrett Sharlow with 15 points, Terry Parham with 13, and Jon Goldberg with 10. Saints improve to 4-6 and will not play again until January 14 when they travel to RPI for an 8 PM matchup.

Oswego falls to 6-2 and will travel to Cortland for their next game on Saturday evening.

Speaking of Cortland, the Red Dragons had an upset of their own Wednesday evening as they traveled to Nazareth and beat the Golden Flyers 53-50 to improve their record to 3-6. Cortland's Jesse Winter led all scorers with 22 points (8x11 fg, 3x5 3's, 3x4 ft). Harrison Hefele and Kevin McMahon both added a dozen points. It was Harrison's 3 pointer with a minute to play that was the key basket for Cortland as it gave the Red Dragon's a 4 point lead.
Nazareth got 14 points and 10 rebounds from Brad Ford while Jason Corletta also scored 14 points. Nazareth drops to 7-3 on the year and will host Hartwick on Friday evning at 8 PM.

Bengalsrule,
The Bruno kid actually helped us. He plays for Plattsburgh. ;) :D ;D

I gotta start reading these posts slower :-[ :'( :-\

Another tuff 1 vs ELMS. I truly believe that Plattsburgh is the better of the 2 but after 30 days off and then a Middlebury/Elms combo in 26 hours....oooowwweee! Thats gotta be tough!
I watched Geneseo play Monday at D'Youville. Squeaked 1 out ( not sure if it was the time
off since they played brockport 12/7 or just them playing badly) against the Spartans by 3. The Knights ran more than I have ever seen them run before. They are headed your way for a Friday contest. With Brockport on tap for Saturday afternoon ( #1 in Blocked shots and 3rd in steals) the Cards may want to re-think that "Welcome back to Jan"combo for the future!

It was protect your home court night in the YAC as all 4 visiting teams failed to find the winner's circle in hoop action this evening.

Potsdam State 74 Brockport State 60

Potsdam State pulled off the biggest surprise of the night, not so much by beating Brockport, but by beating the Golden Eagles so easily. Last February19th an 11-5 Brockport team was challenging for the SUNYAC regular season title when they came north to Maxy Hall to face the 2-14 last place Bears. Potsdam jumped all over the Eagles in the 1st half of that game and went into the break up by 15. Brockport almost came all the way back but ended up suffering a 78-76 defeat that ultimately pushed them into a 4th seed for the playoffs.

Tonight's game was a deja vu experience for the Golden Eagles as Potsdam once again grabbed an early lead and never looked back. Up by 11 with 11:23 to play in the 1st half the Bears would extend their advantage to 20 before settling with an 18 point 43-25 halftime edge. Most of the 2nd half Potsdam maintained a comfortable lead but Brockport did manage to close it to single digits at the 4:00 mark when consectutive baskets made it 65-56. The Bears responded with 7 unanswered points to end any chance of a Brockport comeback.
Potsdam moves into a 3rd place tie in the conference with Oneonta both with 2-1 records. Potsdam is 3-7 overall.

Balanced scoring for the Bears tonight as 10 players scored at least 4 points. Curtis Pierce was Potsdam's main man with a double-double as he was the game's high scorer with 18 points (8x13 fg, 2x2 ft) and also grabbed a game high 13 rebounds. Greg Torchon added 11 points (2x4 fg, 1x2 3's, 6x7 ft) off the bench and freshman big man Rob Duquette who was back in action after missing last game, chipped in with 6 points and 8 rebounds in 18 minutes. The Bears shot 23x50 (46%) from the field, 6x13 (46.2%) from behind the arc and 22x28 (78.6%) from the line. They outrebounded Brockport 45 to 39, but did have 20 turnovers to only 13 for Brockport.

Brockport had 3 players in double figures led by Kyheem Green with 17 points (8x20 fg, 1x3 3's, 0x2 ft) and 10 rebounds for his double-double. Gerald Williams followed with 15 points (3x13 fg, 0x7 3's, 9x10 ft) and Zack McTigue had 14 points (6x9 fg, 2x5 ft) The Golden Eagles had a tough night putting the ball through the hoop. They were only 21x65 (32.3%) from the field, and absolutely pathetic from long distance hitting only 2x18 (11.1%). Free throws were 16x29 (55.2). Brockport is in 5th place in the standings, with a 1-1 record. The Golden Eagles drop to 3-6 overall.

Potsdam will host Geneseo at 4 PM Sat. afternoon while Brockport completes it's northern NY trip by traveling over to Plattsburgh to face the Cardinals also at 4 PM. Live stats are available for both games.

Plattsburgh State proved to be rather rude hosts tonight for the visiting Geneseo Blue Knights as the Cardinals cruised to a 73-51 victory. Cardinals Steve Thomas hit a 3 pointer 4 seconds into the game and Plattsburgh never trailed. Geneseo responded with a basket to make it 3-2 but wouldn't score another point until the 12:27 mark of the 1st half. Lucky for them the Cardinals were in a bit of a funk themselves as they missed 6 shots and had 6 turnovers in that stretch and only had a 10-4 lead at that point. But the Cards got untracked and Geneseo's basket had a lid on it as Plattsburgh outscored the Blue Knights 21-5 over the next 7 minutes to open up a 31-9 lead. The teams went to the break with Plattsburgh up 40-15. The Blue Knights only had 6 field goals in the half and while the stat sheet said they were 6x26 from the field it sure looked like it was worse than that. They did come out and shoot better in the 2nd period but Plattsburgh wasn't about to let them back into the game. They never got closer than 19 and Plattsburgh's Coach Curle had his bench playing lots of minutes throughout the contest.

Four players hit double figures. Starters Steve Thomas had 15 and Chris Ruiz had 13. Carl Munnerlyn came off the bench and added 12 points, while freshman Reggie Williams also came off the bench and had the first double digit game of his young Plattsburgh career. Williams scored 11 points (4x7 fg, 3x4 ft), grabbed 4 boards and had 2 blocks in 11 minutes of playing time. Plattsburgh didn't shoot all that great going 28x70 from the field (40%), 7x20 from 3 point land (35%) and 10x14 from the line (71.4%). They had a slight edge on the boards 42-39 and won the turnover battle 19-26.

Geneseo's Ryan Riefenhauser was the only player in double figures with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Abe Miller had 6 points and 10 rebounds. Geneseo's Coach Minton pulled some surprises when his starting lineup was announced. Three of his regular starters, leading scorer Mike Hoy, Jordan Jones, and Mike Baker, who have started every game they've played in, this year, were on the bench for the first part of the game, as was John Drazen, who has started 4 of 8 games this year.
The only regular starter in the opening lineup was Riefenhauser and he was scoreless in the 1st half. The other 4 starters in tonight's game had a combined total of 2 starts between them. Not sure if he was trying to match up a bunch of his starters with Plattsburgh's bench or not, but it certainly didn't work out to well for the Blue Knights. His 5 starters tonight scored 2 points in the first half. You're not going to win too many games with that statistic. Geneseo ended up shooting 19x54 from the field (35.2%), 1x10 from long distance (10%) and 12x21 from the line (57.1%).

Plattsburgh is now 3-0  in the conference and takes over sole possession of 1st place as Oswego was off Friday night. The Cards improve to 7-3 overall heading into the game with Brockport on Sat. afternoon. Just about every game these 2 teams have played in the past 5 years has been decided by 4 pts or less. Last year the Cards dropped a double overtime game in Brockport, 100-96, but came back to clinch the top seed in the conference tournament by beating the Golden Eagles in Plattsburgh on the last day of the regular season, 75-74. Something tells me that Brockport will bring it on Saturday, despite getting pounded by Potsdam on Friday night.

Blue Knights fall to 0-2 in the SUNYAC and 6-3 overall. They are tied with Cortland for 9th place in the standings. Geneseo now has to regroup, travel to Potsdam and try to get off the schneid in the conference. I'm not sure after watching them tonight if that's possible. Quite frankly I was expecting to see a much better team than I did. I figured any team that beat St John Fisher, played a good Hobart team to within 4 points and beat a decent Medaille team, while going 6-2, was going to play the Cardinals much closer than they did. Could have just been a bad day at Black Rock and they'll shake it off and come out tomorrow and shoot lights out. But if they fall to 0-3 and the Bears go to 3-1 that battle for the 8th and final playoff spot just got a whole lot harder for the Blue Knights.

New Paltz 86  Buffalo State 85.

New Paltz comes back from a 21 point deficit 49-28 with 3 minutes left in the 1st half, and ends the period with a 12-0 run to to keep it close at 49-40. The Hawks slowly chip away at the lead and finally after 13 minutes of 2nd half play they get it to a 1 possession game at 70-67 on 2 Harris Wichard free throws. Still down 75-69 with 4:19 left the Hawks score 8 unanswered points in 1:10 to retake the lead  with 3:09 to play in the game. It was their first lead since the score was 6-5 early in the game. What followed next was 8 lead changes and 3 ties but the Hawks scored the last basket and despite the fact that there was 54 seconds left to play, the Bengals failed to come up with an equalizing free throw or go ahead bucket. Poor foul shooting was most definitely the major reason, if not the only reason, that the Bengals aren't putting a W on the scorecard. Buffalo St. went to the free throw line 37 times in Friday night's game but only sunk 19 and 4 of those misses came after New Paltz scored the final points of the game. First Glenroy Carr misses 2 free throws with 45 seconds left and after a New Paltz turnover, and Bengal time out, Carr's attempt to win the game misses but Jake Simmons grabs the offensive rebound and is fouled with 4 seconds left. He misses both of his attempts, New Paltz gets the rebound, is fouled with 2 ticks left and they miss both of their attempts as the game ends. Both Carr and Simmons are normally decent foul shooters as they were averaging 72% and 85% respectively coming into this game. Hard to believe they gave up that big lead, harder still to believe that 2 of your better foul shooters go 0 for 4 with the game on the line.

Nick Taldi led 5 Hawks in double figures with 18 pts, while Daniel Olsen had a double-double of 13 pts and 12 rebounds. Shareef Taylor just missed a double-double with13 pts and 9  rebounds. Harris Wichard had 12 points and Matt Devine added 11. Hawks won rebounding battle 48-40 but turned the ball over 23 times while the Bengals only had 11 TO's. Key stat was New Paltz sinking 33 of 43 (76.7%) attempts from the charity stripe while Buffalo State was only 19 of 37 (51.4%). Hawks also outshot Bengals from the field, 24x57 (42.1%) to 30x74 (40.5%) and from long distance, 5x14 (35.7%) to 6x21 (28.6%).

Bengals placed 4 players in double figures led by Jake Simmons who was the game's high scorer with 22 pts. Chris Cartwright added 20, Glenroy Carr had 13 and Ahmed Nagaya added 10.
Buffalo State drops to 1-2 inthe SUNYAC and is tied with New Paltz and Fredonia  for 6th place. They are 6-3 overall. New Paltz is 5-4 overall

Bengals play Red Dragons at Oneonta Saturday afternoon at 4 PM

New Paltz will host Fredonia at the same time.

magicman

Oneonta State 58    Fredonia State 46

Fredonia took the early lead in their matchup at Oneonta and eventually stretched it to their biggest margin of the evening, a 20-11 edge with 7:47 left in the 1st half.  But from that point forward it was all Oneonta. The Red Dragons ended the half on a 14-2 run and went into the break up 25-22. A Blue Devil triple tied it up at the start of the 2nd period but the Red Dragons answered every score with 1 of their own and Fredonia couldn't gain the lead. Up 34-32 with 12:03 to play Oneonta had another 15-2 run that gave then a commanding 15 point lead with 3:37 remaining.

Shane Gillette and Troy Talbot each scored 12 points to lead the Red Dragons. Joseph Monahan and Damien Goodwin with 10 points apiece were the top scorers for Fredonia.

Oneonta is now 2-1 in conference play and is tied with Potsdam for 3rd place. Red Dragons go to 3-7 overall on the year. They will host Buffalo State Saturday afternoon at 4 PM

Fredonia falls into a 3 way tie for 6th place in the conference with a 1-2 record and stands at 3-5 overall. They travel to New Paltz for a 4 PM  game later today.

Friday Night's Schedule

4 games on tap as the SUNYAC returns to conference play.

Buffalo State @ New Paltz State      8:00 PM  Think the Bengals win on the road

Brockport State @ Potsdam State    8:00 PM  Port gets revenge from last year

Fredonia State @ Oneonta State      8:00 PM  Oneonta but it could be in OT

Geneseo State @ Plattsburgh State  8:00 PM  Close but Cards win at home

I believe Live Stats are available for all four games.

Two out of four but really should have been three as Buffalo St. blowing the big lead is unreal. I guess I jinxed them by predicting a road win. I was paying Bengalsrule back for jinxing Plattsburgh St when they played Middlebury and Elms. Now we're even! Oh wait! I still owe you one.  :D

Always happy when I pick Potsdam to lose and I'm wrong. Hope I'm wrong a lot with them this year because I'll be picking them to lose a lot. Here's a good example why. St. Lawrence pounds the Bears 70-48.  Brockport beats St. Lawrence 75-71. How can you pick the Bears to beat Brockport. You can't and they do and they make it look easy winning by double digits the entire game.

Anyway I love to predict so here's today's schedule:

Geneseo State      Potsdam State      4:00 PM
When was the last time Potsdam won 2 in a row? Well it won't happen today. Geneseo leaves the North Country with a split as they win 71-66

Fredonia State      New Paltz State      4:00 PM
Hawks have too much firepower for Fredonia. They win 83-72

Brockport State      Plattsburgh State      4:00 PM LS
I'm think the Cards win but not sure of the margin. Brockport has been so inconsistant. Think it might be the first time in a long time that the margin is more than 4 points. Cardinals win 81-67

Buffalo State      Oneonta State      4:00 PM LS
Think the Bengals win on the road 86-81   Bengalsrule does that sound familiar?

Oswego State      Cortland State      4:00 PM LS A
Lakers get a road win here as they down the Red Dragons 74-66

Pleasant surprise to see Potsdam 3-1 in SUNYAC. Too bad about the 1-6 non-conference record though. :(

Actually - this was a repeat of last season, the Bears swept both Brockport and Geneseo last year at the end of the season, in fact knocking the Knights out of the playoffs.

Nice conference start for the Bears, 3-1 is a pretty good job of protecting the "house"

P.S.  Live stats is great when you can't be there.
