Buffalo State @ New Paltz State      8:00 PM  Think the Bengals win on the road

I believe Live Stats are available for all four games.

Two out of four but really should have been three as Buffalo St. blowing the big lead is unreal. I guess I jinxed them by predicting a road win. I was paying Bengalsrule back for jinxing Plattsburgh St when they played Middlebury and Elms. Now we're even! Oh wait! I still owe you one.  :D

Buffalo State      Oneonta State      4:00 PM LS
Think the Bengals win on the road 86-81   Bengalsrule does that sound familiar?

OUCH! Still feeling the pain from this weekend Magic. New Paltz game was a night mare. Up by 19 in the first half...had 2 free throws with 4.4 seconds left in regulation and down by 1...couldn't hit either (although I'll take a Jake Simmons at the line any day of the week).

Oneonta game was a nightmare! Nuff said.

Hopefully we are even ;) ("i still owe you 1").

WEDS FREDONIA Feels our PAIN!!!! (you listening Freddy???)

The road will do funny things to a team. My beloved Eagles fall to Potsdam on Friday and must of played the game of their life on Saturday to defeat Plattsburgh. That is always a very difficult trip to make from western NY. Congrats on the Plattsburgh win. Sorry about your sleepwalking on Friday. The Bears are better than expected.

scooter,
Your Eagles did play well on Saturday. Green scored Brockport's 1st 2 baskets of the game to give them a 4-0 lead but never scored again in the half. Lantigua was the guy who mattered as he came off the bench to score 9 pts in the 1st period. He went 4x5 from the field with a 3 pointer and 3 nice inside baskets. It seemed like every time Plattsburgh got some momentum, a Lantigua bucket would rescue the Eagles. In the 2nd half Green and Are got it going as they scored 14 and 10, while Lantigua came off the bench again and scored 7 more points. Game was still up for grabs with 1:36 to go and Brockport up 61-65, but a Green dunk followed by a technical foul called against Plattsburgh put the game out of reach at 69-61 with 1:07 to play. Plattsburgh played a poor 2nd half but it was their 4th game in 5 days and they were just plain tired. When the Cardinals travel to Brockport on February 4th I'm sure they'll bring their "A" game and the season series, just like most years, will be all even.

I'm still picking Plattsburgh to win the conference regular season despite talk of Oswego being the team to beat. This coming weekend will see the top 5 teams facing off in some head to head matchups that should go a long way in establishing some kind of pecking order.

Here's a 12 year old kid that will get a few offers in 4 or 5 years. Shades of Pete Maravich.

Two games just ended.

Oneonta defeats visiting Oswego in double overtime 75-73.

New Paltz defeats visiting Cortland 64-54.

Oneonta almost hands Oswego the game at the end of regulation, at the end of the 1st overtime and at the end of the 2nd overtime, but each time the Lakers say, no thank you we don't want it. The Red Dragons finally win it with a Derek Hahn basket at the buzzer of the 2nd extra session.

Oswego takes the early lead as they open up a 12 point advantage 16-4 after 6 minutes of play and continue to lead by double digits 24-14 with 8 minutes left in the half. The Red Dragons owned those 8 minutes however as they outscored the Lakers 20-6 to go into the break up 34-30.

Oneonta continued to lead early in the 2nd half but the Lakers stayed close and finally tied it at 39 with 14:13 left to play. Oneonta then scored 3 straight baskets and after the Lakers Chad Burridge hit a pair of free throws, Oneonta's Brian Hooks hit from long distance to give the Red Dragons the largest lead of the game at 48-41. Oswego comes right back with a 14-2 run of their own to regain the lead 55-50 with 5:36 remaining. An Oneonta basket followed by another Hooks' triple ties it up again. Oswego goes back up by 3 but Oneonta's Troy Talbot drives for 2 and Hooks nails another 3 pointer to give the Red Dragons a 60-58 lead with 2 minutes to go. Laker's Kevin Kucel ties it up and with 29 seconds to go Oneonta turns it over. Kucel's attempt for the win with 4 seconds left rims out and the teams head to overtime.

In the overtime period the teams trade baskets and remain tied, but with 1:09 left Oneonta's Dan McLaren makes a layup and is fouled to give the Red Dragons a 67-65 lead and a chance to make an old fashioned 3 point play. McLaren misses the free throw and the Lakers rebound the ball, only to have it stolen by Derek Hahn with 53 seconds to go. Clearly in the driver's seat,  the Red Dragons have to make it interesting as they proceed to turn the ball over to Oswego and Chad Burridge makes them pay as he drives to the hoop and scores his 7th point of the extra session (he was the only Laker to score in the overtime period) to tie the game at 67. With 17 seconds to play Oneonta still has time for the game winner but instead they turn it over once again with 14 seconds left and Burridge misses a shot at the buzzer that would have won it for the Lakers. On to the 2nd OT.

Oneonta starts off with a basket, Lakers get a free throw followed by another Oneonta basket to give then a 3 point lead with 2 minutes left. Again, Burridge comes through as he rebounds a missed shot and gets fouled as he makes the putback. His free throw ties the game at 71 but Oneonta scores on their next possession to regain the lead and when Oswego misses a 3 point attempt with 57 seconds to go, the Red Dragons grabs the rebound. For the third time Oneonta is in a position to close out this game but they turn the ball over with 47 seconds to play.  And again it's Burridge who ties the game with a layup and goes to the line with a chance for the lead with 34 seconds remaining. He misses the foul shot and Oneonta rebounds goes for the last shot which is blocked by Burridge  with 5 seconds left but goes right to Derek Hahn who lays it in for the game winner. Burridge had a final attempt from behind the arc at the buzzer that hit the front of the rim. Burridge scored 12 of the 13 points that the Lakers scored in the 2 overtime periods.

Oneonta was led by Brian Hooks and Derek Hahn with 18 points each. Hooks was 6x11 from the field but all six shots were from long distance.  He had no free throw attempts. Hahn was 7x10 from the field and 4x5 from the line. Sophomore Dan McLaren started his first game of the season and responded with a 17 point  effort. He was 8x11 from the field and 1x3 from the line. Both Hahn and McLaren grabbed 8 rebounds apiece as the Red Dragons won the battle off the glass 44-40. Oneonta had 17 turnovers while Oswego only had 9.

The Lakers were led once again by Chad Burridge who had game honors in both points with 27 (11x20 fg, 1x3 3's, 4x7 ft)  and rebounding with 11 to give him his 2nd double-double in a row. Brendon Nollet added 12 points (5x9 fg, 2x4 ft) with 7 rebounds.

Oneonta now moves into sole possession of first place in the SUNYAC with a 4-1 record. Oswego falls into a 3 way tie with Plattsburgh and Potsdam for 2nd place all at 3-1. Big changes will take place this weekend however as Oneonta travels to Brockport and Geneseo. Oswego will host Potsdam and then Plattsburgh, while Cortland gets the northern NY pair as well.

New Paltz improves to 3-2 in conference play with Tuesday nights win over Cortland. Hawks gain lead for good with 11:02 left in the 1st half. Up 27-26 with 2 minutes to go in the half, the Hawks hit 7 unanswered free throws and go into the locker room up 34-26. Cortland kept it close for most of the 2nd half but with 16 minutes left to play they never got closer than 4 points. Hawks got a double figure lead, 46-36, with 13:42 remainiing and any time the Red Dragons cut it to 4 the Hawks would build it back to 8 or 10. Largest lead was 12 on 2 occasions and 64-54 was the final.

Matt Devine had a double-double for New Paltz with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Harris Wichard was the game's leading scorer with 18 points while Shereef Taylor added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Cortland was led by John Connolly with 13 pts and 8 rebounds. Jesse Winter chipped in with 12 points.

Both teams suffered through a poor night shooting especially from long range as New Paltz was 4x19 and Cortland was 3x17 from behind the arc.

New Paltz heads west to take on Geneseo and then Brockport this weekend. Cortland looks to break into the conference win column this weekend when they host Plattsburgh, then Potsdam.

Four games on tap tonight and they all offer live stats.

Plattsburgh at Cortland     Card's 1st conference road game. Should win this one by a comfortable margin.
Live stats link:  http://www.cortland.edu/athletics/mbasketball/live/xlive.htm

Potsdam at Oswego          Lakers will not lose 2 in a row and Bears have trouble winning on the road. Oswego by at least a dozen, but I hope I'm wrong.
Live stats link:  http://www.sidearmstats.com/oswego/mbball/index.htm

New Paltz at Geneseo     I've seen both teams play and New Paltz is better. Hawks should win this game but Geneseo is trying to avoid an 0-4 conference start. Hawks win a close one though.
Live stats link: http://www.geneseo.edu/athletics/blue-knight-live-stats

Oneonta at Brockport        If Brockport plays like they did at Plattsburgh last Saturday they win by 10. If they play like they did against Potsdam last Friday they lose by 10. I think the Golden Eagles at home will be too tough for Oneonta and the Red Dragons will have a short stay atop the SUNYAC rankings. Eagles by 5.

4 for 4 with my picks tonight and the margins of victory were about what I expected. About time things went as planned.  :D

Plattsburgh State gains the road win as they defeat Cortland 69-57.

Saturday Jan 15th games. All games start at 4 PM

Plattsburgh @ Oswego        I believe one of these teams will win the regular season crown. And being the homer I am I think it will be Plattsburgh. Plattsburgh won both meetings last year and Oswego has made big strides since then but the Cardinals still have all the parts that saw them win at home 88-80 and in Oswego 81-66. More of the same this year, just a little closer. 75-71 Cards.

Potsdam  @ Cortland       Cortland still looking for their 1st conference win of the season. Potsdam hasn't won a conference road game in almost 2 years. Red Dragons win a close one 72-68

New Paltz  @ Brockport     Toughest call of the weekend games. New Paltz is averaging more ppg.  Port is giving up fewer ppg.  I'll go with the defense and the Golden Eagles 68- 65.

Oneonta  @ Geneseo        Other Red Dragons get back into the win column as Blue Knights find it's lonely at the bottom. Oneonta 82-74.

Live stats are available for all 4 games. Links to them can be found in yesterdays post.

Plattsburgh and Cortland played a close 1st period with the Cardinals gaining a 4 point advantage heading into halftime up 30-26. Plattsburgh's Ketama Brooks opened the 2nd half scoring with a 3 pointer to make it a 7 point lead but Cortland came right back and closed to within 2 at 33-31. That was as close as the Red Dragons would get however and they quickly found themselves down by 12 at the 14:09 mark as the Cardinals used a 13-3 run to gain the upper hand. Cortland was behind by double digits for the rest of the game except for a brief moment when they cut it to 8 with 1:39 to play. Plattsburgh responded with 2 quick buckets and some free throws to build it to 15 before coasting to the final of 69-57.

Cardinals had 3 players in double figures led by their All American candidate Chris Ruiz with 16 pts (5x12 fg, 4x6 3's 2x2 ft).  Steve Thomas had 13 points with 4 steals, and Errol Daniyan had 10 points with 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Point guard Ketama Brooks added 5 points and 6 assists. Freshman Shavar Fields came off the bench to score 8 points and grab 8 rebounds in 13 minutes of play, all season highs for him.  Cards shot 24x52 from the field (46.2%), 8x16 from long distance (50%) and 13 x20 from the line (65%). They had 35 rebounds to Cortland's 34 and 13 turnovers to 14 for the Red Dragons.

Cortland was led by Jesse Winter, who matched Ruiz with 16 points (6x12 fg, 3x4 3's, 1x3 ft). John Connolly had 11 points and Jeremy Smith added 10. Cortland got outshot by the Cardinals in all 3 areas as they went 19x54 (35.2%) from the field, 7x17 from behind the arc (41.2%) and 12x21 from the stripe (57.1%).

Magic--I like your picks specially my Eagles! Hopefully they have found their stride and have the right rotations to stay competitive. New Paltz does put up some points so it will be very interesting to see if defense prevails. Like I said last weekend the road does some interesting things to teams. Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde routine!!! Get Em Eagles!!!

New Top 25 Poll is out and Ithaca took a slight dip as they fall from the 20th to the 22nd spot. Their point total dropped from 76 last week to 59 for this week. Plattsburgh State has fall completely out of the poll and NYU has also tumbled almost out of sight as they only receive 1 point this week after holding down the 25th spot last week. No other East region team recieved a single point. Should Ithaca suffer 1 or 2 more losses they will surely drop off the list and I don't think there will be any East team to replace them.  Ther are no 1 or 2 loss teams left in the region. About the only way another East team will get any recognition would be if they go on an extended winning streak and maybe in the last several weeks of the poll a 21-4 or 20-5 team may get some support. Especially with so many teams in the bottom 10 spots changing so frequently due to multiple losses. Here's the link to the complete Top 25:
