That Fredonia score is a bit of an upset.  The Devils have been in the lower tier of the 'YAC for a while, and PS-Behrend is a regular NCAA D-III tourney participant.  Massey had that projected as a 13% likelihood that the Devils would prevail.  New season and all, but looks like the conference is picking up a few wins vs. non-conference opponents early in the season.

Bengals - did the scoreboard burn out?  141, that's Grinnell "system" pace.  Bet there weren't many shot clock violations with 230+ points scored.

What would you think if I told you that the best SUNY Men's Basketball team doesn't play in the SUNYAC.  Also, the Best SUNY Men's Basketball team beginning with the letter P isn't Plattsburgh or Potsdam( please say it ain't so).  The Best SUNY Men's basketball team resides in Westchester County.

SUNY PURCHASE

Unfortunately we will never know if my statement is true because they don't play in the SUNYAC.  If I had anything to do with the SUNYAC, I would reach out to each and every SUNY school and make a true conference.  Make it East/West like it once was.  Top 4 teams in each division make the playoffs.  It would be fun to have some new blood.  FYI, there are 4 SUNY schools in the Skyline Conference plus SUNYIT, Morrisville, Canton, Cobleskill etc etc etc.,

PS Potsdam plays no home non conference games.  That makes for a difficult schedule.  Lets see if they are up for the challenge.
Go Bears.

Scoreboard is still standing! And you are right...not 1 shot clock violation!!! The boys were really eager for this 1. 7 new players (6 frosh/1 transfer), coupled with the veterans desire to show that they were ready to pick up from where they left off at last year, made for an exciting opener! A crowd of over 1,100 made the atmosphere electric!

Ahmed Nagaya (who replaced Center-Glenroy Carr) was clearly the biggest reason why the BENGAL faithful are encouraged about this season. 11/15 from the field, 3 blocks and 6 boards..will make 1 forget about Glenroy quickly.

The final score really was not a good indicator of how the game went. No starter played more than 20 minutes (and none of the top 8 played the last 10). Our 3rd stringers (3 frosh) gave up 23 points in the last 6 mins of the game. >:( .

The opponent gets tougher next week (Pitt-Bradford)!

I too agree that it was a good 1st day for the YAC'. I've learned over the years that these games really help all of us come Feb/March! Oddly enough when you look at the Empire 8 website you will see some discomfort/disbelief with Utica's loss to Potsdam. The E8 website lists Utica's record as 1 - 0 and states Utica (vs Potsdam) "W 67-72".  ???

Fredonias' win over PS Behrend (23-5 last season) was impressive! Magicmans Cards winning at Norwich (16-10 last season/they defeated conf foe and NCAA participant, Johnson and Wales) definitly is also encouraging for the YAC. Not sure which Card was guarding 2011 2nd team GNAC player-Antonio Davis, but to hold Davis to 4 of 9 field goals (10 points) in 34 mins of play is good stuff!! Good luck at U of Rochester Friday!

Congrats to "Team Spanbauer" for thier win over Elmira! Facing defending Freedom Conf Champ/NCAA participant Delaware Valley on the road this Friday should give us a lil more insight into the "BIG Red"

Hmmm on the Oswego loss at St. Lawrence. I see that only 6 players played more than 5 mins for Oswego. And I noticed that Gilkes (who killed my beloved BENGALS last year) had 2 fouls and 2 turnovers in the span of 25 seconds (14:25-14:01) of the 2nd half. I'd be curious to see how he/they bounce back vs. Ithaca Friday night at home. It would have been nice to have them come to the ARENA on 12/10 with an 8-0 record (and hopefully the BENGALS at 6-0).

Hopefully the YAC will sweep this weekend! I plan on driving to Rochester for the Cards game! ;)

SUNY PURCHASE

Unfortunately we will never know if my statement is true because they don't play in the SUNYAC.

However we can do a comparison from last season by comparing SUNY Purchases record vs. common opponents that ventured west to take on the YAC'.

Purchase (Skyline conf. Champ and NCAA rep... 24-5 record 2010-11) vs. Mount St. Marys (19-9 record 2010-11.. tied for 2nd in Skyline Conf).

Game 1 at Purchase - Mt St. Marys wins by 11 74-63
Game 2 at Mt. St. Marys - Purchase wins by 4 72-68

Skyline Vs. SUNYAC last season.
11/22 - Mt. St. Marys versus New Paltz (11-14 record 2010-11.. 6th place SUNYAC finish). New Paltz wins 91-88
11/19 - Mt. St. Marys versus Geneseo (11-14 record 2010-11.. 9th place SUNYAC finish). Geneseo wins, 81-77

Not sure what your basis is for saying SUNY Purchase would rule the day in the YAC but I believe that on any day, any team in the SUNYAC would own SUNY Purchase..or any other team in the Skyline! And yes I'm biased..but New Paltz and Geneseo beating a top 2 team from the Skyline....nuff said!!!

Good luck to the Bears this Friday at Salem State!!

no worries magic... that's why I am junior varsity and you are All American!  Nice win for a young Cardinal team last night by the way...

Thanks Bear Fan,
Cards and Bears both winning on the road in season openers was an early birthday present for me as I hit the Beatles "When I'm" number today.(Don't like to say it, it's so big) My wife did promise to still need me and feed though, on my facebook page.

SUNYIT was a member and decided to go elsewhere at the moment it became competitive, for reasons that escape this older mind at the moment. And wasn't Morrisville a provisionary member while making the jump from two  to four year school? Then decided to head elsewhere and a more competitive setting by its means (although M'ville's move to the NJAC in football amazes us)? Canton and Cobleskill growing as well, but facing the same pains as Morrisville? Also believe Purchase thinks it's just fine in a lesser conference

Summary of the Plattsburgh-Norwich game last night. 79-57

The Cadets hung with the Cards for the first 11 minutes and were only down 17-15 with 9:09 left in the half, but 6 different subs came off the Plattsburgh bench and struck quickly as the Cardinals built a 13 point lead, stretching it to 16 at the half. Soph John Perez was  the biggest factor as he scored 10 points in about 10 minutes of court time. Freshmen Mike Mitchell, Shamoy McIntosh, Gary Tibbs, and Ezra Hodgson, along with junior transfer Anthony Hodge all scored their first points for Plattsburgh State in the final 9 minutes of the period. Nice to see all the first year players get involved in a close game situation. Senior point guard Ketema Brooks hit 2 3's, had 4 assists and finished the half with 8 points before yielding the point to Mitchell who had several nice assists of his own. This kid is a great passer and I've already seen him do a few "Mike Deane" passes. Bench players scored 24 of the Cards 42 points.
2nd half was more of the same as Plattsburgh always led by double digits, built their lead to 24 by the midway point of the period and Coach Curle got everybody involved. 11 players had double digit minutes and everyone on the team made it into the scoring column. Curle said,"everyone contributed, there is going to be an issue about who gets what minutes. That is a challenge we are going to have to face, but it's going to be a good challenge. There wasn't really a letdown when we went to our bench." He was also pleased that of the 32 field goals the Cards made, 17 of them were assisted. Cards bench ended up with 49 of the 79 points scored.

John Perez led the Cards with 16 points off the bench and was a perfect 6x6 from the field with 2 3's and 2x2 from the line in 16 minutes. Fr. Tibbs had 10 points (5x5 fg, 0x1 ft) and 4 boards in 12 minutes while Brooks also had 10 points (4x7 fg, 2x2 3's) with 6 assists in 27 minutes. Soph Shavar Fields had 9 pts (4x10fg, 1x3 3's) and 6 boards in 25 minutes. Fr. McIntosh, had 3 pts, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (16 minutes) in his Cardinal debut. Fr. Hodgson ended up with 6pts (3x5fg) and 2 rebounds in 11 mins. Cards shot 58% from the field in each half ending up 32 for 55 and 40% from behind the arc (6x15). They were 9x14 from the line and out rebounded the Cadets 33-27. They also won the turnover battle 13-17.
Norwich placed 3 players in double figures led by Brandon Kuhre with 14 pts (4x8 fg, 4x8 3's 2x2 ft). Antonio Davis had 10 pts (4x9 fg, 2x3 ft) with 6 boards to lead the Cadets in that category. Ryan Williams had 10 pts (3x9 fg, 1x5 3's, 3x4 ft) with 4 boards. Cadets were 18x49 (36.7%) from the field, 5x18 (27.8%) from 3 point land, and 16x21 (76.2 %) from the line.

Cards off to Rochester to take on U of R on Friday at 8:00 PM. Be tough to win that one but hope for a decent showing from this young squad. Have a feeling this could be quite a roller coaster ride this year.

Kind of hard to call them the best SUNY team when they graduated 9 of the 11 players on last years team.   Even if they had those players on the team this year, I'd have to agree with Bengalsrule, they would probably finish in the lower part of the conference. Over the years the YAC has usually done a number on the Skyline schools.

I was looking at SUNY Purchase stats last night. Last year was their best season in school history as they went 24-5 and won their first ever NCAA tournament game. What amazed me was the support they got at their home games. 11 regular season home games and they had less than 90 people at 10 of them. A real hotbed of hoops there.

What do you want, like Potsdam, it's known as a performing arts school.  When Half of your student body is comprised of musicians, dancers, actors, and artists, they also have to spend a lot of time practicing and performing, often at the same time as athletic contests.

That may be true but I don't ever recall Potsdam having trouble filling Maxcy hall year after year, when the Bears were at the top of their game.  ;D

We're only about 20% musicians, actors, dancers & artists, besides, we had half the Canton, Potsdam, & Massena communities there, (Jerry Welsh was the best salesman ever) whereas Westchester County has less snow and more to do most winters nights, Including D-I hoops at Iona.

Actors or not...there is nothing about Purchase or the Skyline basketball  that any true YAC' fan should be impressed about!!!!!!!

Like I said Lets have some fun

The only thing I know about Purchase is that they are a SUNY school that wasn't very good at any sport until 2 or 3 years ago, 2 trip to the Dance(second round last year), lost their entire team, got 2 preseason votes in the top 25, and Pat Coleman defended the votes on the Skyline Conference link.  That being said I do know that Potsdam plays ZERO, that's right ZERO home non conference games.  I would fire someone over that.  The only SUNYAC school playing more home games then road games is Buffalo State.  We need to change the schedule because we play each other 18 out of 25 games leaving 7 non conference games.  Its not about beating each other  up to get to the dance, its about getting to the dance with as many teams as possible.  In any given year 4 or 5 SUNYAC team have the talent to get there but because of the 18 game conference schedule(there are no weak teams in the SUNYAC anyone can beat anyone on any given day) We don't get the respect we deserve and 2 maybe 3 teams make it.  So I make the statement again make the SUNYAC a true State University of New York Athletic Conference, two divisions, more non conference games, more teams in the tournament.

PS It doesn't matter how many fans watch your home games when 16 games are on the road.  Also how many SUNYAC school have been to the NCAA tournament two years in a row in any sport.  Maybe they aren't a sports minded school but the results are there to speak for themselves.  Competition is always a good thing

GO BEARS, this weekend we will see if we are the real deal or not.
