SUNYAC Player of the Week for week ending November 20th was Fredonia State's Julius Bryant.

From the SUNYAC website:

MEN'S BASKETBALL – Fredonia

Julius Bryant (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech), senior forward

Fredonia State senior forward Julius Bryant helped the Blue Devils defeat a trio of 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifiers to start the 2011-12 season. Bryant averaged 12 points and 5.3 boards in the first week of competition, shooting 52 percent from the floor and 89 percent from the line. Tuesday night, he netted 10 points in a 61-50 win against Penn State Behrend. Over the weekend the Blue Devils defeated Wells and Ithaca in the Max Ziel Tip-Off Tournament. Bryant finished with eight points and five rebounds against the Express and scored 18 points and hauled down seven rebounds verse the Bombers in a 75-70 win. Bryant was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts and the Blue Devils were declared co-champions.

SUNYAC Player of the Week for week ending November 27th was New Paltz State's Matt Devine.

From the SUNYAC website:

MEN'S BASKETBALL – New Paltz

Matt Devine (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township), junior forward

New Paltz junior forward Matt Devine scored a career-high 31 points off 11-of-16 shooting (68.8 percent) from the floor and added a career-high 15 rebounds in a 95-88 loss to Mount Saint Mary College last Tuesday night. He was also a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Devine has notched a double-double in each of New Paltz's three games this year, and he is averaging 23.7 points per game and 12.7 rebounds per game. The Hawks are 1-2 overall and next face cross-river rival Vassar College on Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. in their 2011-12 home opener at the Hawk Center.

Congratulations to both players.

Thanks for the correction Bear, I changed it up above in my post. Should have known better than to post these games by checking the SUNYAC site. :P  I better check the other games now by looking at the team schedules. They may be wrong on more than the Potsdam game. Nothing's easy. ::)

The 1st regular season Top 25 poll just came out and Buffalo State moves up several spots to #16. Oswego State fell from #18 into the others receiving votes category and would be #32. Rochester as expected dropped from #7 down to #12. The only other teams from the East region to receive votes was Hartwick at #40 with 12 votes and Hobart received 1 vote. The biggest mover of the week as I stated earlier was Wheaton (Ill) who jumped from #25 all the way uo to #13. Surprised to see a 3-2 Washington U team get 6 votes.

Lets see what the crystal ball can do with tonight's games.

Buffalo State at Houghton    7 PM

The Bengals should breeze through another laugher here and hit the century mark once again should they wish to. I'm thinking Buffalo State wins big 104-65.

Fredonia State at Elmira College  7 PM

The point spread is Elmira +14 and since they're 0-5 and have lost by 14-14-12-17-14 in that order I can't see them keeping this one in single digits either. Wells beat Elmira by 14, Fredonia beat Wells by 8, I guess you can see where I'm going with this. Blue Devils stay undefeated (who'd a thunk it) and move to 5-0 as they win 68-54.

Cortland State at Ithaca College  8 PM

Ithaca has had it problems starting out 0-4 before they finally put one in the win column. But the win was against a a team that's 1-3 and the Bombers have already dropped 2 games to SUNYAC foes, Oswego and Fredonia. The point spread has the Bombers favored by 1 and with the Cortaca Jug in BBall up for grabs I anticipate a close game. I think the Red Dragons have better shooters and will control the paint so I'm going with Cortland 75-71.

St. Lawrence at Plattsburgh State  8 PM

St Lawrence was picked to come in 4th in the Liberty League Coaches Poll but I think they might do better than that. They opened with a win over Oswego on the road and come into tonight's game with a 2-1 record having lost by double digits to Keene State who will compete stongly for the LEC title this year by all accounts. The Larries and the Cards always play each other tight and I expect this game will be no different. The point spread has the Cardinals favored by 4.5 but I think St Lawrence with their 2 senior leaders will be too tough to handle. I'm just hoping the young Cardinals play like they did against Norwich and Rochester, instead of how they played against Ursinus. So I'll wear my heart on my sleeve, hope the point spread is right and pick the Cardinals 71-67.

Potsdam State at Clarkson 8 PM

The Bears invade Alumni Gym and take on their crosstown rivals. This game should also go down to the wire as the point spread has the Golden Knights favored by a single point. Both teams have played Utica College in Utica with the Bears winning by 5 and Clarkson losing by 3. That's an 8 point swing so I'll take the Bears 69-66.

Cortland, nearly succumbing to hungrier Ithacans after battling back from eight point halftime deficit, pulls it out with four second left. Two times out preceded H. Marcus' 4-point play at 3' lifts IC into 65-64 lead. F. Mitchell steal hikes margin to three at 2:04, but misses key layup down the stretch. B. Manning gets CSt within a point.

Pierce 10 pts, 9 rebs; T. Efese 12 pts. Clarkson hits 57 percent from the floor. Places five in double figure scoring to push record to 3-1. Potsdam 2-2

Unbeaten Buffalo St.'s third straight wasn't as easy as it looks. Bengals build 46-32 intermission gap but witness Houghton on four occasions close to four. Final time 70-66 at 5:31. Just back from the Plattsburgh State-St. Lawrence game that was quite a defensive battle. First half was a back and forth affair with 6 lead changes and 3 ties with Plattsburgh finally getting a leg up in the final 2 minutes of the period. Up 23-21 with 2:19 remaining Plattsburgh scores the final 7 pts of the half to go into the break up 30-21. Josh Bruno hit a jumper with 1:50 to go and after St Lawrence missed two 3 point attempts on their next possession, freshman Shamoy McIntosh hits a triple with 38 seconds remaining. St. Lawrence comes down for the last shot and misses with 5 seconds left. Cardinals rebound and push it up the court where Shavar Fields gets a layup with 1 second left on the clock. The 9 point halftime advantage would be the largest lead either team would enjoy.
St. Lawrence freshman Brady Condlin opens up the second period with a jumper and a 3 pointer to trim the lead to 4 and after a Cardinal free throw SLU scores 5 more unanswered points to tie the game at 31. A 12-6 spurt by the Saints gives them a 43-37 edge at the 10 minute mark. They continue to hold that lead and 2 free throws by Ralph Temgoua makes it 49-41 for the Larries largest lead of the night wiith 6:40 left on the clock. Slowly the Cardinals closed the gap until they trailed by 3 at 51-48. SLU's J. Brase scores and is fouled but misses the free throw to make it 53-48. Cards Reggie Williams scores on a layup and Saints hit 1 of 2 free throws on their next possession to make 54-50. Card's Coach Curle calls a timeout with 2:23 to go and draws up the play of the game. Cards inbound the ball in front of their bench to freshman point guard Mike Mitchell who takes several dribbles and launches a perfect alley oop pass to a cutting John Perez who slams it down with 2:19 left. Saints call a timeout and on their next possession use the entire shot clock but come up empty. Cards rebound, come down, miss a 3 attempt,  Perez gets the offensive rebound, misses a short jumper,  McIntosh gets that rebound and with 1:17 left McIntosh hits another timely 3 pointer to give the Cards the lead, 55-54. Saints call another time out and Plattsburgh defensive pressure forces St. Lawrence to throw up a 3 point prayer with no time left on the shot clock that doesn't come close to hitting the rim and a shot clock violation is called with 40 seconds left. SLU chooses not to foul and Cards miss a shot with 18 ticks left but Perez once again grabs the offensive rebound and is fouled. He makes the 1st and misses the second. SLU rebounds the miss but Perez steals the ball underneath and puts it back in for a 58-54 lead. SLU comes down attempts a three and Cards grab the final rebound. Coach Curle played every available player tonight and 9 of the 12 had double digit minutes. Nice to see this young team come through in crunch time. Hope I get to see more of it.

Cardinals place 4 players in double figures led by Perez with 14 pts (6x10 fg, 2x7 ft) and 5 boards in 28 mins but I think he had more than that. Josh Bruno had 10 pts (4x9 fg, 1x3 3's, 3x3 ft) and 7 rebounds in 28 mins. McIntosh also had 12 pts (4x7 fg, 3x3 3's, 1x2 ft) and 6 rebounds in 25 mins. Shavar Fields ended up with 11 pts (5x11 fg, 0x1 3's, 1x2 ft) in 27 mins. Reggie Williams had a good all around game with 2 pts, 6 boards, 2 assists 2 blocks and a steal.

Plattsburgh  shot 23x53 from the field (43.4%), 5x12 3's (41.7 %) and 7x14 ft (50%) they won the rebound battle 35-29 aand had 13 turnovers to 12 for SLU. Cardinals improve to 2-2 for the season.

St Lawrence was led by Brady Condlin with 11 pts (4x6 fg, 1x1 3's, 2x3 ft) and Terry Parham also had 11 pts (5x8 fg, 0x1 3's, 1x1 ft). Janpeter Brase was the leading rebounder in the games as he had 10 boards. Leading scorer for the Saints, Ralph Temgoua was held to 7 pts, 11 below his season average. 2nd leading scorer for SLU, Garrett Sharlow did not play, missing his 2nd straight game. Saints shot 21x55 from the field (38.2%), only 3x15 from the arc (20%), and 9x14 from the line (64.3%).

Plattsburgh goes back on the road this Friday to take on Cortland State. St Lawrence, also 2-2, will travel to Ithaca on Friday to take on the Bombers.
