Just came back from the Buff State vs. Houghton game. See JDEX report
Quote from: jdex on November 29, 2011, 11:04:02 PM

Unbeaten Buffalo St.'s third straight wasn't as easy as it looks. Bengals build 46-32 intermission gap but witness Houghton on four occasions close to four. Final time 70-66 at 5:31. BS answers with J. Mitchell deuce, J. Simmons trey and N. McLean hoop. Lights out for Houghton at 4:25. Simmons 27 pts(9x20fg, 4x12 3s); A. Majak 13 pts, 11 rebs, 2 blcks in 18'; McLean 13 pts, 5 stls; R. Epps 11 pts. Bengals 33x74fg but outboarded 48-37. Turn Houghton over 26 times. BS 12 TVers. Houghton 2-4 and led by M. Munoz 23 pts, 13 rebs, 5pf in 38'; C. Confair 22 pts, 8 rebs in 31'

Toughest game to date but 1 that also revealed what the BENGALS future looked like. Having to replace Chris Cartwright initially seemed like a tall order. His 16.7 per game look impossible to fill. However after 3 games 3 things are obvious!

1 - Fabulous FROSH! The BENGALS have the best crop of freshman that anyone in Buffalo can remember. Roderick Epps 6-3 freshman guard from Uniondale L. I. has shown to be serious threat when he steps opn the court. Avg. 11.3 pts per game (3rd best on the team) after 3 games coupled with a 55% shooting from the field makes Roderick an instant threat when he steps on the court.
Anyar Majak, 6-7 Freshman from Jefferson H. S. in Rochester NY, made a statement tonite with a resounding double double 13pt/11 rebs and 2 blocks in 18 mins of play. What many of us knew he had in him all along, came to light loud and clear this evening. (See more below about the freshman class.)

2 - Veteran leadership. Seniors Norman Simmons and Ahmed Nagaya have stepped up and have shown to lead by example in their final year as BENGALS. Norman nearly 2 to 1 Assists (14) to turnover (8) ratio will only get better as the season goes on. He is undoubtly the best defensive P.G. in SUNYAC (in my Humble opinion) and his leadership this season has been superb. Ahmed Nagaya has stepped in for the departed Glenroy carr and the BENGALS haven't missed a beat.
Junior Jake Simmons is well... Jake Simmons. Avg. 24 pts a game and shooting at a better than 41% from 3 pt land (10 of 24 from beyond the arc) makes this 1,000 pt scorer in just 2 seasons  the greatest scoring threat in the conference (IMHO). Not sure what he can do to improve on his 1st team all SUNYAC season from last year but I'm anxious to see. Junior Justin Mitchell, SUNYAC tourney MVP from 2011 Yac Championships, has picked up from where he left off at last year. Nuff said!!

3 - McLean/Hamer and associates. Sophomore Nico McLean has replaced Chris Cartwright in the BENGALS starting five. What he has brought to this unit is immeasureable. A tough defender and excellent rebounder (16 boards in 3 games). Junior Anthony Hamer is probably, pound for pound, the toughest defender in SUNYAC. A floor general who relieves Norman and Nico and creates matchup problems for 99% of the guards who can't keep up with him.
The Associates begin with Chris Castren, Seth Runge and Mark Gross. All will see increased playing time with both Runge and Gross spelling Nagaya and Mitchell. Castren is ready to play either the 2, 3 or 4 positions and has a deadly jumper. Freshmen Maurice Miles, Justin Stokes, Troy Singleton and Parris Purcelle along with transfer Stephen Alexander, will all become increasingly important as they get more playing time and find their niche in what most consider the most talented BENGAL team in recent memory!

SUNYAC play this weekend with a visit to Oneonta and New Paltz. Get to see what the BENGALS really look like in games that count!!!

Cortland, nearly succumbing to hungrier Ithacans after battling back from eight point halftime deficit, pulls it out with four second left. Two times out preceded H. Hefele drive and dish for winning K. McMahon layup. IC can't get off final bid and slip to 1-5 while Corts get to 4-1.

Looks like Mr. jdex has already put the Plattsburgh-Cortland game this Friday in the win column for the Red Dragons as he shows his favorite team with a 4-1 record. :o Hard to do when they've only played 4 games. ??? Hope he's jinxed them big time. ;) Cards need to repay RDragons for favor bestowed last spring in Plattsburgh. Both teams coming off emotional victories and hard fought games. Wish I could take this one in.

4-1 Tuesday night with my picks as the Bears loss failed to give me the sweep. Really surprised at the MOV for the Knights. Correctly picked 2 barnburners and had the 4 point spread right on in the SLU-Plattsburgh game. Also had both double digit winners tabbed.

Games on tap for this evening:

Geneseo St. vs University of Rochester at Brockport St. 6 PM  (Wendy's Classic)
Roberts Wesleyan at Brockport St 8 PM (Wendy'sClassic)
Vassar College at New Paltz St. 7 PM
Oneonta St. at Skidmore 7 PM

Numbers, numbers ....why so fickle. Just numbers. Cortland fortunate to get past Ithaca. Great execution on winning play, but very, very careless in closing minutes leading to that. As we said, Ithaca looked hungrier. And at 1-5 who can blame them. Much better than that, for sure! Rutgers transfer Mitchell the real deal at D-3. Corts badly beaten off the boards in late going. Still searching for that inside horse. Hope last night's rather inconsistent play was result of T-day layoff. And, yes, Pburghers will be a handful. And on another note, neat to see IC videocast of game in Florida!! Nice job.

Tonight's predictions:

Geneseo St. vs University of Rochester at Brockport St. 6 PM  (Wendy's Classic)

Geneseo, winless on the season won't get lucky tonight either, as The Yellowjackets will come out stinging. The point spread is Geneseo +18 and I would consider it a victory if the Blue Knights could stay within shouting distance. They won't though and Rochester romps 89-67.

Roberts Wesleyan at Brockport St 8 PM (Wendy'sClassic)

Golden Eagles still winless on the season will get lucky tonight as they face a team that also has struggled against weaker competition than Brockport has faced. No posted point spread for this game but I think Coach Dunne will have his team fired up and Brockport comes away with an 82-70 victory.

Vassar College at New Paltz St. 7 PM

New Paltz and Vassar have both lost to Mount St. Mary but at least the Hawks kept it close. New Paltz favored by 11 and should cover. Hawks take this one 80-68.

Oneonta St. at Skidmore 7 PM

Oneonta seems up against as they take another quality team in Skidmore. Thoroughbreds will come out running and may never stop. The spread is Skidmore -11 1/2 and Red Dragons will be hard pressed to keep this one close. Skidmore will take this one 78-62.

Geneseo making a game of it against Rochester as they lead the Yellowjackets 34-33 at the half. Blue Knights Jordan Jones hits a 3 with 34 seconds left to give Geneseo a 34-31 lead but Jackets Chris Dende hits a jumper at the buzzer to pull Rochester within one. Jones leads all scorers with 16 first half points on 4x8 from the field, 1x1 from the arc and 7x9 from the line. Hope the Blue knights can pull off the upset. Would be a huge confidence builder heading into SUNYAC play.

Rochester's Dibartolomeo heats up in the 2nd half as he scores 9 straight pts in 2:21 seconds to power the Yellowjackets into a 42-37 advantage with 17:39 to play. He scores 6 more points and has 3 assists as Rochester stretches their lead to 67-53 with 2 minutes left to play. Geneseo was down by 8, at 47-39 and twice fought back to get within 3, the last at 52-49, wih 8:40 to go. Jackets Nate Vernon hits a triple, folowed by a 3 from Chris Dende, a drive by Dibartolomeo, another 3 by Dende, a 2nd 3 from Vernon and a free throw from Dende in the space of 4:14. Just like that it was 67-49 and this game was over. Blue Knights with a final push close to 68-60  but Vernon and Dibartolomeo hit their free throws to make the final 72-60. Valiant effort by Geneseo to keep it close.

Dibartolomeo led Rochester with 25 pts (9x14 fg, 1x3 3's, 6x6 ft,). He also added 5 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 37 mins.. Chris Dende scored 14 pts (4x10 fg, 3x7 3's, 3x4 ft) in 30 mins. Nate Vernon added 13 pts (4x9 fg, 2x5 3's, 3x3 ft) in 30 mins. Rob Reid was the glassmaster with 10 boards and 6 pts in 24 mins. Rochester was 22x47 fg (46.8%), 7x19 3's (36.8%) and 21x24 ft (87.5%). They were outrebounded 33-27 but only had 14 turnovers to 18 for Geneseo.

Blue Knights Jordan Jones shared scoring honors with Dibartolomeo as he also tossed in 25 pts (7x14 fg, 1x1 3's, 10x16 ft). Abe Miller was the only other Blue Knight in double figs with 12 pts (6x10 fg, 0x1 ft) and added 6 boards. Ryan Riefenhauser grabbed 7 rebounds had 4 pts, 4 steals and 3 assists. Geneseo shot 22x52 fg (42.3%), 2x12 3's (16.7 %) and 14x21 ft (66.7%).

Rochester improves to 5-1 and will play the winner of the Nazareth-RIT game coming up at 8 PM.

Geneseo now 0-4, moves into the consolation bracket and will face the loser of the Naz-RIT game.

Wonder if Rochester is looking for a rematch against Nazareth or is hoping they can avoid the Golden Flyers as Naz now owns a 2 game winning streak over the Yellowjackets. They beat them last year in the Championship game of the Wendy's Classic, 62-60 and knocked Rochester from the undefeated ranks this year with an 82-64 whipping just 8 days ago. Jackets dropped from #7 to #12 in the D3hoops Top 25 because of it. Can someone say revenge.  Naz has to get by RIT first though.

Brockport leads Roberts Wesleyan 45-32 at halftime. Down 29-26 with 7:50 to go the Golden Eagles finish the period with a 19-3 run. Donnell Jackson with 8 pts and 5 rebounds as well.
Wesleyan has 10 pts from Mike Stone.

Brockport State finally breaks into the win column as they defeat Roberts Wesleyan 79-68. Golden Eagles will now face Hobart on Friday as they handled St John Fisher 83-58.   Wesleyan and Fisher will face each other Friday in the consolation bracket. Gerald Williams led Brockport with 22 points (6X9 fg, 2x4 3's 8x9 ft) in 33 mins. Kyheem Green had 18 pts (8x14 fg, 1x1 3's 1x4 ft) and 18 rebounds in 37 mins. Lance Legister added 13 pts in 26 mins and Donnell Jackson finished with 12 in 29 mins.  RW's Mike Stone was the game's high scorer with 23 pts. Eagles 29x64 fg (39.1), 6x14 3's (42.9%) and 23x35 ft (65.7%). Brockport enjoyed a big margin off the glass with a 53 to 40 edge and both teams had 16 turnovers.

RIT will meet Wesleyan in the consolation bracket.

Magicman choices go 4-0 Wed nite to make it 8-1 so far this week. Pretty close with the Port-Wesleyan pick as I had it 82-70 and actual was 79-68.

Nearly nailed the New Paltz-Vassar game as well when I called it 80-68 Hawks. Actual was 83-70. Should have reversed my scores for these 2 games. I would have missed by a combined 2 pts. But I was close enough to give a few guys a laugh or two.

Oneonta and Geneseo lost by double digits as I guessed they would but I'm happy to report they both covered the point spread.Oneonta lost 62-52 to Skidmore but RDragons were getting 11+ points. Blue Knights getting 18 from U of R only lost 72-60. Thought that the winners in these 2 games would put more points on the board than what they did
