SUNYAC Championship Cortland at Oswego 4:00 PM

For the first time in a number of years the top two teams in the conference  will square off in the Championship contest. Oswego is looking for a perfect ending to the SUNYAC season as they look to repeat the success that Plattsburgh State had when they completed an unbeaten regular season and tournament run in 2007-08. Cortland looking to keep their season alive as they have no chance of getting a Pool C bid to the NCAA's should they lose today's game. Laker's on the other hand are a lock to get into the Dance whether they win or lose this game. Lakers own 2 wins over Cortland this year and the one at Oswego in January was a thriller that featured a big Laker comback in the final seconds. The 2nd game ealier this month had Oswego in control early as they won by an 84-65 margin. I think this game will be closer to what transpired in the first meeting between these teams. Oddsmakers have the Lakers favored by 7 points. I think the Lakers complete their season sweep and come away with a 75-70 win.

Oswego opens up a 7-0 lead to start the game but Cortland comes back with 12 unanswered points and ultimately a 17-2 run to move in front 17-9. Lakers play catch up for most of the half until a Chad Burridge jumper and 4 straight Hayden Ward free throws finally put Oswego in front 25-21 with 38 seconds left. Jesse Winter counters with a basket at the buzzer to make it a 25-23 halftime edge for the Lakers. Hayden Ward with 8 points, Ryan Sheridan with 6 points and Burridge with 4 lead Oswego.

Winter with 6 points Jeremy Smith with 5 and Kevin McMahon with 4 points lead Cortland.

Cortland with no answers for Lakers' H. Ward and C. Burridge ......Men among boys when they work inside, which midway through the final half allowed OSt to take control .....for some reason Burridge (probably when he hit a three) desired to play out front after ruling the inside. But the pair made Corts big guys look silly. Ward 24 pts, Burridge 18. Free throwing solid down the stretch for OSt. Ward and S. Michele did the job. Lakers 22x26 FTs. Cortland actually missed chances to tighten matters with about 5:30 left, and RDragons finished 1x7 at the line. Rebounding also went Oswego way in final period after Corts held first half edge. J. Smith 13 pts for CSt, J. Winter 11, B. Manning 11 pts and 5pf, K. McMahon 10 pts and 5pf.  Congrats to Lakers .....truly the best team throughout the campaign

Figured Magic would have had it .......Oswego 66, Cortland 57 ........  Lakers 53-50  as H. Hefele '3' gives Oswego pause for concern. Even more when B. Manning launches tying bid. He misses. H. Ward delivers inside for Lakers, who build 59-50 lead. Corts twice made approach to five points ........foiled time after time by Oswego FTs

OSt 20x42fg, 4x14 3s, 22x26ft .......CSt 23x58fg, 8x27 3s, 1x7ft

Oswego wins the SUNYAC Championship with a 66-57 win over Cortland. The Lakers win their first ever SUNYAC Tournamnet Title, and grab the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. There's a good chance they may get to host a first round pod as they did last year.

Chad Burridge was chosen as the Tournament MVP. The SUNYAC All Tournament team consist of the following players:

John Ivy Brockport State
Jeremy Smith Cortland State
Jesse Winter Cortland State
Hayden Ward Oswego State
Chad Burridge Oswego State

FranElia

Geneseo's Ryan Riefenhauser also made the all-tournament team. The complete team is:

Chad Burridge, Oswego (MVP)
Hayden Ward, Oswego
Jeremy Smith, Cortland
Jesse Winter, Cortland
Ryan Riefenhauser, Geneseo
John Ivy, Brockport

Thanks Fran,

I got the players off the video feed but must have missed Ryan's announcement. He must have been the 1st name called and Ivy was the first name I heard.

FranElia

I did the same thing originally. He must have been mentioned first - I didn't hear the name either. I found out from Oswego's SID shortly thereafter.

#4004
The East region comes out smelling roses as Hartwick, Hobart and NYU all recieve a Pool C bid to the dance. The following eight teams from the East Region are all dancing:

Oswego State--Ithaca--Skidmore--Medaille--Morrisville State--Hobart--Hartwick--NYU

Oswego State as I thought gets to host a first round pod with their opponent being the Endicott Gulls who won the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship in the Northeast Region and got a Pool A bid.

Medaille, winners of the AMCC conference will take on Eastern Connecticut who won the Little East Conference from the Northeast Region, in the other  game at the Oswego site. So all four teams in the Oswego pod were Pool A winners

Hartwick in a bit of a surprise also gets to host a first round pod as they will take on Farmingdale State from the Atlantic Region. The Rams were the winners of the Skyline conference championship.

The other game at Hartwick will feature the #3 ranked team in the country the MIT Engineers. MIT was the champion of the NEWMAC conference and they will take on the winners of the Liberty League, the Skidmore Thoroughbreds.

Ithaca who won the Empire 8 championship will travel to Staten Island to take on the Saten Island Dolphins, from the Atlantic region and winners of the CUNYAC championship. The other game in that pod will have two Northeast Region schools squaring off as Rhode Island College takes on Salem State. Rhode Island College from the Little East Conference received a Pool C bid, while Salem State won the MASCAC championship.

Hobart will travel to Radnor Pa. home of the #6 ranked Cabrini Cavaliers. The Statesmen will face off against Ohio Wesleyan University who received an at large bid from the Great Lakes Region. The Battling Bishops finished in third place in the North Coast Athletic Conference and bring a 20-7 record into the dance. Host Cabrini will play Castleton State who won the North Atlantic Coference Championship, in the Northeast Region.

NYU a Pool C winner will host the Misericordia Cougars in a first round game. The Cougars, winners of the Middle Atlantic Conference-Freedom are making their first trip ever to the NCAA tournament. The winner of this game will travel to Amherst for a 2nd round matchup. The Lord Jeffs were one of the two teams that received a first round bye. (The other team was Virginia Wesleyan)

The Morrisville State Mustangs, winners of the NEAC championship are making their first appearance in the NCAA tournamnet and will travel to the Middlebury Panthers and face the 4th ranked team in the country.

I don't see a lot of wins here for the East Region. Oswego is a double digit favorite in their matchup against Endicott. NYU will be favored by about 8 points against Misericordia and Hartwick is a slight favorite (5 points) against Farmingdale State.  Morrisville State is a 25 point underdog, while Medaille, and Skidmore are both about 10 point underdogs. Ithaca (+7) and Hobart (+3) won't be favored either but upset possibilities are there.   Hope the teams from the East have good luck at the Dance. It would be nice to get multiple teams into the sweet 16.
