Cortland holds off the Soaring Eagles as the Red Dragons made it interesting when they fouled Elmira behind the line when they were up 61-55 with 10 seconds left. Elmira's Josh Keys hit all 3 free throws to make it a 1 possession game. Elmira fouled on the inbounds pass and Jeremy Smith made both free throws to ice it for Cortland. Elmira with a basket with 2 seconds left for the final points of the game. Final score was 63-60. Smith led all scorers with 24 points. Jesse Winter had 14 for the Red Dragons. Josh Keys led Elmira with 15 points and Chris Cassidy added 13. I think Cortland is letting out a big sigh of relief right about now. Elmira certainly an improved team over last years 1-24 team.

I guess Fredonia is playing tonight as a halftime score was just posted showing Hilbert up 42-30 at the break.

thebear

Fredonia drops their opener to Hilbert 83-59.  Never a good start when a SUNYAC team loses to an AMCC team.

In Devil's defense, they had to reload, with huge grad losses.

Slow start for the 'Yac (IMHO). Cortland squeaks by the Elmira and Fredonia gets crushed by Hilbert (whens the last time Hilbert "crushed" anyone?).

Hopefully tonite we have better results with....

Oneonta at Scranton
Ithaca at Potsdam (I imagine thebear has his game face/voice ready!) ;)
New Paltz at Nazareth (hmmmmm)
D'Youville at Oswego (1 AMCC victory over he 'Yac is enough for this year.)
The Sage Colleges at Plattsburgh ( see the magicman)

I'll leave all predictions to the magicman! :)

Thanks Bengals, will be MIA tonight, but I will be following on my laptop, wife had a medical problem, had to have surgery and is in the hospital for a bit.  Hoping my Bears make a good showing against a good team.

Sorry to hear about the wife. I'm sure all will be well! Here's hoping that Potsdam does us all proud tonite!!! I'll be keeping an eye on them via live stats!

Here's hoping the wife gets better real soon! ;)

Cortland with plenty of vets tested by equally veteran but younger Elmirans (14 returnees). RDragons going uphill from the moment Eagles D. Vogel and K. Dutcher nailed game-opening triples. Twas 29-25 at the half. First Corts lead at 33-31 on J. Smith 'three'. Elmirans led as late as 49-48 on C. Cassidy bucket. Think Smith then scored eight straight. Dragons up 59-53 at 0:56 and 61-55 at 0:41. Pesky Elmira actually made hay at expense of Dragons' strength -- treys,  Eagles 10x22 from beyond the arc, CSt 8x22. Differing edge: Corts 11x18ft, Eagles 6x7.

Newcomer for Cortland .......as if it needs backcourt help ......soph L. Herron with 9 pts(4x8fg) in 18'. Smith 8x12fg, 4x7 3s, J. Winter 7x8ft, 3assts; H. Hefele 5 rebs, 7 pts. Elmira's C. Cassidy 8 rebs; J. Keys 4x6 3s.

And, yes, Bear, get the family up and running!! Health to you and yours ...... Should be a good one tween touted Bombers and the 'Dam.

Nazareth over New Paltz
Scranton over Oneonta
Ithaca over Potsdam

Hope I'm wrong on those three. I think Potsdam and New Paltz will put up a good fight. Not so sure about Oneonta.

Oswego over D'Youville
Plattsburgh over Sage

These last two should be by sizable margins, although Plattsburgh is without the services of 3 key players this weekend, including two of their top scorers from last year.

thebear

And above all Happy Birthday Magic.  You once again gone ahead in the age race by one year.

Oswego 122, D'Youville 72  after Morrisville over Medgar Evers 87-59 (obviously not the same Medgar Evers team that beat Oswego last year.)

Plattsburgh 80, Sage Colleges 62      after York (NY) beat Norwich 69-59

Ithaca 76 Potsdam 69      slight correction from jdex's post.

St. John Fisher 79, Fredonia 60

Nazareth 90, New Paltz 69

Scranton 63, Oneonta 55 after Baruch over York, Pa. 72-55

Pretty much what I expected the YAC teams to do tonight. Bengalsrule never listed the Fredonia game in his schedule that he posted but after losing last night to Hilbert I wouldn't have picked them over Fisher.

Plattsburgh State's Cardinal Classic has certainly got the right name as tomorrow's championship game will feature the Cardinals vs the Cardinals as Plattsburgh won their game against Sage 80-62 to advance against York (NY) who defeated Norwich 69-59.

Norwich will take on Sage at 2:00 PM and the Cardinals of Plattsburgh will meet the Cardinals of York at 4:00 PM.

Plattsburgh State dressed 13 players for the game and everyone of them saw action. Ezra Hodgson opened the scoring for Plattsburgh 29 seconds into the game, scored the Cards first 6 points and also had the Cards final basket with 48 seconds remaining in the game. In between he nailed 5 other buckets and ended up with 20 points, a career high, to lead the team. The Cardinals were without the services of their top 2 players from last year, John Perez and Shavar Fields as well as instant offense off the bench, Gary Tibbs. Hodgson was the go to guy tonight and he came through in a big way. Shamoy McIntosh continued where he left off last year as he came off the bench to score 15 points while adding 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Sophomore Jordan Moody, in his first start in a Cardinal uniform had 12 points and with big man Reggie Williams in foul trouble all night, the Cardinals turned to soph Alan Siergiej, a transfer from New Paltz and Siergiej responded with his career high in points with 10, along with 8 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Two other transfers had a productive night as they started their Plattsburgh careers. Kalik Parker was a perfect 5 for 5 from the line and finished with 8 points and 3 rebounds in 12 minutes of play. Chris Manning played 23 minutes and dished out 6 assists, with 3 steals, 3 boards and 3 points. Regular point guard Mike Mitchell had 5 assists and 3 points. Cards shot 42% from the field (29x69) only 23% from beyond the arc (6x26) and 76% from the line (16x21). They had 40 rebounds to 41 for the Gators but won the turnover battle as the Cards had 13 TO's while Sage had 25.

Sage was led by their 6'8" center Ryan Sager who had a game high 25 points and 7 rebounds. North Country product Matt Farbotko (Northeastern Clinton Central School) had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Mason Horne added 10 points and 7 boards. Sage shot 39% from the field (20x51), 22% from the 3 poont line (2x9) and 64% from the stripe (20x31).

Plattsburgh will get two of their three missing players back for the game against York. Perez will not return until the Middlebury game on the 25th. Think the game will be competitive but feel the Cards will prevail.

bear, thanks for the birthday wish. It's official I am now an old man and have my medicare card. You can join me next year. ;D

Looks like Potsdam getting immediate return on new transfer, Mark Lake. Tight game through the first 27 minutes before Bombers opened up a 13 point lead. Bears wouldn't go away and got it to within 6 but too much to overcome. Lake with 21 to share game's scoring honors with Ithaca's Travis Warech. Lake also added 5 assists and was 3x4 from downtown. Potsdam with 8 point lead late in the first half let Bombers close the gap but still go into the break up 33-29. Bombers shoot 15x20 in the first ten minutes of the 2nd half to open up 11 point lead. Bears 7x14 during that stretch with 8 turnovers to 4 for Ithaca. That was the turning point of the game. Bears Curtis Pierce with 15 pts, 8 boards, 5 steals and 3 assists. Rob Duquette with 10 points and 7 boards, and Colin Peterson with 11 points. Foul line was another telling statistic. Bombers 22x34 from the stripe. Bears only got 16 attempts makng 7. Final margin of victory was 7 points for Ithaca but they had more than twice as many free throw attempts and the 15 point differential at the line will in most instances put you on the short end of the score. I know the Bears fouled toward the end of the game but even prior to that Ithaca had more than twice as many free throws than Potsdam. I'm thinking the Potsdam faithful were probably not to happy with the guys in striped shirts.

Oswego crushes D'Youville as their 8 bench players score no less than 7 pts  and as much as 18 points with 4 of them in double figures.  Zach D'Alessandro had 18 points, Rashawn Powell had 13 pts and 8 rebounds,  Kyle Covley had 12 pts with 4 boards, and Justin Haight had 11 pts, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Daniel Ross had 9 pts, 7 reb, and 3 steals, while Elijiah McLaurin had 8 pts, 5 reb, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Alex Rawa had 7 pts,  5 assists, with 4 boards and Walter Sampson had 7 pts and 4 assists. The bench played 121 total minutes and the starters played 79 total minutes. Starting forward Hayden Ward played 19 minutes and had 16 points and 8 rebounds.
