Never knew that Tom Chapin ("Cats in the Cradle") was a Plattsburgh alumnus. Announcer just shared that "did you know" while Hobson hits a 3 and puts the Cards with in 2 - 64-62 . 3:44 left!

Champ,
That's another close but no cigar!! ??? Tom Chapin is an alumnus of Plattsburgh State and he was a heck of a basketball player. If you're as old as I am you could have seen him play back in the mid 60's. I believe he graduated in 1966. That year in February I traveled from Potsdam over to Plattsburgh to watch the deciding game between the Bears and the Cardinals to see who would win the conference crown and an automatic bid to the NCAA's.(No YAC tournament back then) Plattsburgh was up by 8 points with 52 seconds left in the game, but the Bears came back and won it to clinch the bid. Chapin was the Cardinals star player and he was a senior that year. He DID NOT however pen and sing the song "Cats in the Cradle" . That would be his older brother Harry Chapin who left us entirely too soon as the result of a fatal auto accident/heart attack.(He suffered a heart attack but it was not known if it occured as a result of the accident or if it happened before the collision when he was rear ended by a tractor trailer). Harry was only 38 years old at the time of his death. Saw him in concert several times back in the 70's. Always put on a great show.

Tom Chapin was, for  5 or 6 years, the host of the Sunday morning TV program for children called Make a Wish. He is also a singer-songwriter and Grammy winner in his own right.

And that's Hodgson not Hobson. ;D

I saw Tom Chapin at a children's show (excellent) here in town around 10 years ago and it was the only time I have ever seen a performer orchestrate their own standing ovation.  During the encore he called for everyone to "stand up and clap your hands".  Two minutes later the song ended and he walked off the stage......and we were all standing and clapping....

OOPs. :-[ I'll blame the NSN announcers! ;)

And I'll let you! ;D  Video broadcast was pretty cool wasn't it? A lot of schools in the area are using this company for their broadcasts.

Went 10-0 this week in the National Pick Em League over on the Multi Regional Topics Board. Would gladly wish I went 9-1 as the Middlebury-Plattsburgh game was the final game of the week. I picked Midd but hoped I lose. I think it's the first time anyone's ever had a perfect week. (But I may be wrong. I know it's the first time in 4 years at least)

That's what happens when you get a quality education at a fine school like Plattsburgh State. ;)  Great story Ethelred!

Middlebury 80 Plattsburgh 73.

Great game at Memorial Hall this afternoon even if my Cardinals didn't get the win. I called it 75-68 in favor of the Panthers and after a 29-24 Plattsburgh lead at the half I thought my totals would be fairly close. I had the correct MOV at 7 points but both teams put up almost twice as many points in the 2nd stanza as they did in the first. Referees for the most part let them play in the first half as they only called 11 fouls (6 against the Cards, 5 on the Panthers) Made up for it in the 2nd period as they whistled the teams for nearly 3 times that amount. Happy that the zebras didn't decide the outcome. Only a few calls that I thought were questionable, some on both sides.

The first half was a defensive battle with each team contesting nearly every shot that was fired up. Nine ties and 5 lead changes took place before the Cards went ahead 21-19 on an inside basket by Reggie Williams. At one point the teams went nearly 5 minutes without a single point being scored. Plattsburgh stretched their lead to 29-22 before a Joey Kizel steal and layup with 35 seconds left  cut it to 29-24 at the half. John Perez had a monster dunk midway through the period to fire up the Plattsburgh crowd.

The Cardinals outscored the Panthers 6-2 to open the 2nd half and gave them the largest lead of the game by either team at 35-26. After a quick Middlebury time out  the Panthers went on a 13-3 run to regain the lead at 39-38 on a three pointer by Hunter Merryman.
Eight more lead changes and 7 ties would occur before a James Jensen jumper gave the Panthers the lead for good, making the score 58-56 with 6:06 left to play. Up by 5 after 2 Nolan Thompson free throws, the Cards got a triple by Ezra Hodgson to close within 2 but a Kizel layup and a Thompson 3 pointer gave Middlebury their largest lead of the contest at 69-62. Cards would fight back and once again get it to a 1 possession game when Chris Manning stole the ball from Kizel and fed Gary Tibbs for a layup to make it 74-71 with 38 seconds left. Plattsburgh called a timeout and went to a trapping press but the Panthers broke it for easy baskets on the next 2 possessions to open up another 7 point advantage and put this one away. Final score should have been 78-73 but refs blew the whistle on Plattsburgh with a half second on the clock which allowed Kizel to pad his stats a little bit. ;) That would have made the final the same score as Midd had when they opened the season with a 78-73 win over Ursinus.

Plattsburgh was led by Shavar Fields with 11 points (3x4 fg, 5x6 ft). Ezra Hodgson had 10 points (4x9 fg, 2x4 3's) and 5 rebounds. Shamoy McIntosh also scored 10 points (2x7 fg, 2x6 3's, 4x4 ft) with 3 assists. Gary Tibbs led the Cards in rebounds with 6 and had a solid game with 8 points (4x4 fg) and 3 steals. Point Guard Chris Manning added 8 pts (4x11 fg, 0x1 3's) 6 assists, 3 steals and 3 boards. John Perez, Plattsburgh's leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer from last year, saw his first action of the year today and ended up with 8 points (3x6 fg, 2x2 ft) 3 rebounds and 2 assists.Plattsburgh shot  27x56 from the field (48.2%), 7x19 from downtown (36.8%) and 12x13 from the line (92.3%). They won the rebounding battle 30-21 and had 17 turnovers to 15 for the Panthers. The Cardinals had a balanced effort today as Coach Curle played 12 players in the game and all of them hit the scoring column.

Middlebury placed 3 players in double figures as Nolan Thompson led all scorers with 23 points (8x13 fg, 3x7 3's, 4x4 ft). Thompson also was the game's top rebounder with 7, and he added 2 steals and 2 assists along with his usual sterling defense. He was the Panther's MVP today for sure. Peter Lynch was close behind as he had a number of nice inside moves to finish with 19 points (6x8 fg, 7x8 ft). Joey Kizel had 13 points (4x8 fg,1x2 3's, 4x6 ft) and 4 assists. Jake Wolfin finished with 7 assists, 5 points (2x6 fg, 1x3 3's) and 3 rebounds. The Panthers shot 27x47 from the field (57.4%), 7x16 from 3 point land (43.8%) and 19x23 from the stripe (82.6%).

Plattsburgh's next game is Tuesday Nov 27th when they travel to Canton, NY to take on St. Lawrence University.

Middlebury's next opponent will probably be a little easier to handle as they host Southern Vermont on Tuesday the 27th as well. The Mountaineers are still looking for their first win of the season. Don't think they'll find it on that night either.

Buffalo State Epps named Player of the Week!

http://www.sunyac.com/awards.aspx?aow=850

Not sure why the SUNYAC has Rod listed as a "senior"? ??? He is correctly listed on the Buffalo State roster as a sophomore. Not sure where they are getting (or not getting) their info from. Thanks to JDEX/magicman, they now have the Geneseo record posted. I guess they (SUNYAC) folks are working out the kinks after switching bases from Fredonia to Cortland. ;)

I received an email today from the SUNYAC office thanking me for the corrections on the Geneseo scores. I have since notified them about the incorrect Potsdam-Ithaca score and Rod's class designation. I expect the corrections will be forthcoming.

D3hoops new Top 25 is out and 2 NY teams make the list. Rochester is ranked at #17 with 162 points. NYU checks in at #22 with  114 points. Oswego State is listed in the others receiving votes category with a total of 12 points. That would make them #40.
Stevens also in the ORV category tied at #45 with 7 points.
No other East Region team made the list. Here's the link to the rankings:

Medaille at Buffalo St. 7 PM

I think the Bengals may have to much firepower for the Mavericks in tonight's game. Bengals still smarting from loss to Nazareth that they let get away. Will make amends here. Posted line has the Bengals favored by 8.5 and the way these 2 teams have been putting points up on the board would indicate a high scoring game. Buffalo State has been up against much tougher competition that Medaille has. I'll take the Bengals  94-83.

Elmira at Fredonia State  7 PM

The Soaring Eagles haven't soared for quite a while, but this year's team is showing signs of improvement over last year's 2-23 squad. Although they haven't won yet this year, their two losses to Cortland and Hamilton have been by a combined 5 points. This is their first game on the road so I'm not sure what to expect. Fredonia is in a complete rebuilding mode having lost a ton of their rotation from last year's 13-12 team. Blue Devils' sole win against D'Youville with double digit losses to Hilbert and St. John Fisher. Oddsmakers have made Fredonia a 7.5  point favorite, but I think that's too much. In fact I think any team that can hang with Cortland can beat Fredonia. I'm picking Elmira in a close one  63-59.

New Paltz State at Vassar  7 PM

The Hawks take on their local rivals at Vassar and look to even their record at 2-2. New Paltz is coming off a disappointing 83-81 overtime loss to Mount St. Mary last week in a game that the Hawks led at halftime by 16 points. Hawks still up by 3 with under 10 seconds left in regulation when a Mount 3 pointer tied it up. In OT they quickly fell behind and never recovered. Hawks own a 3 game win streak over the Brewers, who enter the contest with a 2-1 record. Both wins coming against lightweight competition. The posted line has the Hawks favored by 7.5 points but I think they might win it by double digits. I'll go with the Hawks 79-68.

Oswego State at Cobleskill  7 PM

This is the biggest mismatch on the schedule tonight. The Lakers, espousing to the Jim Boeheim school of thought, take on their 3rd straight cupcake. That being said it's interesting to note that 2 years ago, a 10-16 Cobleskill team went right down to the wire against NCAA bound Oswego 63-62. Only a last second jumper by the Lakers Chad Burridge pulled out a victory from the jaws of defeat. Things got back to normal last year as the Lakers pounded the Fighting Tigers, 107-53. I expect this year to be more like last year. Pointspread has the Lakers favored by 21.5 points, but I think they'll win by more. Oswego takes it 95-59.

magicman

Buffalo State off to a slow start against Medaille falls behind by 15 points at 19-4 eight minutes into the game. Bengals fight back and outscore the Mavericks 37-26 the rest of the period to make it a 4 point halftime deficit 45-41. Jake Simmons, Seth Runge, and Brad Doyley lead the Bengals with 8 points each. Mavericks have 2 players with 8 apiece. Bengals need to pick up the intensity on defense, especially at the 3 point line. Mavericks with seven 3's in the 1st half, 7x14.

Clarkson at Potsdam  8 PM

The Golden Knights take on their crosstown rivals in Jerry Welsh Gym and will be looking to extend their 4 game winning streak against the Bears. Last time Potsdam beat Clarkson was in their 1st meeting of the 2008-09 season back on November 22, 2008. Clarkson won the rematch 10 days later and single meetings the next 3 years. Teams have started the year in opposite directions as the Golden Knights are undefeated at 3-0 win a nice win over Ithaca. Bears opened up 0-2 losing to both opponents (Ithaca and Berkeley College) in the opening North Country Invitational at Clarkson. Clarkson beat both of those teams to win the tournament. Oddsmakers have made the Knights a 3.5 point favorite and the way the Coleman brothers have opened the year for Clarkson would make me agree. I expect a close game but think that Clarkson will come away with the win, 74-69.

Ithaca at Cortland  8 PM

Hoops version of the Cortaca Jug on display tonight as the Red Dragons hope to repeat their success on the hardwood that they had on the gridiron this fall. Both teams return large pieces of last year's teams that resulted in a down to the wire barnburner, won by Cortland 68-67, on a last second basket by Kevin McMahon. I expect more of the same this year when these clubs tangle. Bombers enter with a 1-1 record having defeated Potsdam State and losing to Clarkson on a buzzer beater in the championship game of Clarkson's opening season tournament 65-63. Cortland is 2-0 with both wins coming against probable lowere tier E8 teams Elmira and Utica College. Red Dragons will certainly need to play better than they did against Elmira if they hope to come away with a win here. Post line has Cortland favored by 6 points but I think that might be too much. I'll pick the Red Dragons in a nail biter again, 75-72.

Plattsburgh State at St. Lawrence  8 PM

Cardinals travel to Canton to take on North Country rival SLU in their annual meeting. Cards have won 4 of the past 6 and the last 3 in a row. SLU lost a lot from last years team and in danger of misssing the LL playoffs this year. Saints have opened up 0-2 on the season and lost by 14 to a Mount St Mary team that edged New Paltz last week. Plattsburgh coming off a tough loss to #4 Middlebury and looking to get back into the win column. Pointspread is favoring Plattsburgh by a single point but I think the Cards will be too deep for this young SLU team. I'm taking Plattsburgh to win this one 76-64.
