Plattsburgh State 59 Oswego State 57

The Lakers 32 regular season SUNYAC win streak comes to an end as Plattsburgh holds on to upset Oswego in Max Ziel Gym. Cards with the early lead 17-10 proceed to go scoreless for nearly 7 minutes and fall behind 20-17 during that time Oswego would maintain their edge and go into the locker room up 28-22 at the break. Cards closed to within 2 early on in the 2nd but couldn't get over the hump as the Lakers continued to maintain a slight margin. Down 44-39 at the 11:46 mark the Cardinals got a pair of free throws from Shamoy McIntosh and a 3 pointer from Mike Mitchell to finally draw even with the Lakers. Twice more the Lakers went ahead but each time the Cards fought back and finally gained a lead on Ezra Hodgson's 3 pointer at 49-48 with 6:29 left to play. After Oswego missed twice on their next possession, John Perez scored on a nice inside move to make it 51-48. It was a lead they would never relinquish.

Plattsburgh with a 6 point lead 56-50 with 1:46 to go. Hayden Ward comes down and scores to cut it to 4. Plattsburgh misfires on their next possession, but Oswego turns the ball over on a Mike Mitchell steal.  Perez misses a layup for the Cards and Oswego's Ward scores again to close to 56-54 with 38 seconds to go. Oswego fouls with 33 ticks left and Shamoy McIntosh makes the 1st one and the Lakers call a time out. McIntosh misses the 2nd one but Lakers' Daniel Ross turns it over and Lakers have to foul again. John Perez goes to the line and hits 1 of 2 to make it a 4 point Cardinal lead. 58-54 with 27 seconds left. Lakers call another timeout. Chris Gilkes drives to the basket and makes a layup and is fouled and completes the 3 point play. 58-57 with 5 seconds left to play. Lakers Sean Michele fouls Kalik Parker who misses his first attempt and the Lakers call another time out. 4.7 seconds to go. Parker makes the second free throw and Coach Tom Curle calls a timeout for Plattsburgh. Final play of the game coming up unless it goes to overtime.
Lakers throw a length of the court pass to Hayden Ward who takes a step ot two to the hoop and throws up a shot that misses and the Cards rebound to take the victory.

Plattsburgh was led by John Perez with 14 points and 9 rebounds (6x1o fg, 2x4 ft). Chris Manning also had double figures with 10 pts (2x12 fg, 1x5 3's 5x6 ft). Chris did not have a good night shooting the rock other than his trips to the charity stripe, but his all around game was still solid for the Cards. When he was on the floor, the Cardinals were at their best. He finished with 5 rebounds and 4 assists in 20 minutes of play. McIntosh, Hodgson, Shavar Fields and Ed Correa all had 6 points each  Once again, as has been the case all year, Coach Tom Curle went to his bench early and often. Thirteen players saw action and 10 of them hit the scoring column. I said at the beginning of the season that the coaching staff had some tough choices to make regarding who gets on the floor and for how long. In tonight's game their leading scorer on the season didn't even play in the first half. Ten different players have started in a game this year and 11 players are averaging double digit minutes per game. Last year's leading scorer has yet to start a game this year.

Cardinals shot 20x53 from the field (37.7 %) and only 5x17 from the 3 point line (29.4%). They were 14x21 from the line (66.7%) but did manage to go 8x12 at the end of the game to hold off Oswego. The battle of the boards was a draw as each team corraled 37 and the turnovers were pretty even as well, with Plattsburgh giving the ball away 13 times to 12 for Oswego.

Oswego got a big night from Hayden Ward with 25 points and 15 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. Chris Gilkes added 16 points and 5 rebounds. Sean Michele had 9 points and 4 rebounds.

Lakers stats were very similar to Plattsburgh as they shot 19x54 from the field (35.2%), 3x17 from the arc (17.6%) and 16x22 from the stripe (72.7%)

Oswego will host Potsdam State on Saturday at 4 PM. Lakers lose their first game of the season and fall to 3-1 (0-1 in the YAC)

Plattsburgh travels to Cortland for another tough game on Saturday at 4 PM. Cards improve to 4-1 (1-0)

Geneseo 73 Roberts Wesleyan 76

This was a tough one for the Blue Knights to lose and they probably wish they could get a do over for the last 2 minutes of play. Geneseo fell behind 8-2 out of the gate but quickly tied the game up a few minutes into the period. They could not however claim the lead and spent most of the half playing catchup. The Redhawks, on several ocassions, went up by 6 points, which was the largest lead they would get, but Geneseo always came back and finally did go ahead 36-34 on a Ryan Riefenhauser jumper with 1:37 left to play. RW tied it up on their next possession and the teams were tied at 36 at hte end of the half.

After a lead change and 3 ties Wesleyan forged in front and the 2nd half was a repeat of the first period with the Blue knights once again playing catch up. The teams were tied at 42 when Wesleyan built several 5 point leads, the first time at 50-45. Each time Geneseo would respond and close to within a point only to have the Redhawks create some daylight. Down 56-55 after a Matt Curry 3 pointer, Geneseo had a turnover, a foul and then a technical foul on the bench. The Redhawks made all 3 free throws and opened up a 9 point advantage for the largest lead of the night, at 64-55. Curry made another trifecta, and Riefenhauser made a layup to pull the Knights back within 4. Still down 70-64 with 3:53 to go Andy Drescher buried a triple, and a pair of Blue Knight layups sandwiched a Redhawk basket to make it 72-71 with 1:58 left. With a free throw coming on the last made layup by Gordon Lyons, the Knights had a chance for the tie but he missed it. However, the Redhawks missed a layup and Matt Curry grabbed the rebound and was fouled. He missed both foul shots but got the rebound on the 2nd miss and Lyons made up for his missed free throw seconds earlier by burying a jumper to give the Knights their first lead of the half at 73-72 with 1:07 remaining. The Redhawks came down and missed a 3 point attempt but the rebound went to Wesleyan's Tyrel Dixon who put it back up and missed, got the rebound again and was fouled. He went to the line and calmly made them both despite his own coach calling a time out after he had made the 1st one. With 24 seconds left on the clock Geneseo had plenty of time to hit the game winner but 10 seconds into their possession they turned the ball over. They had to foul and the Redhawks made them both for a 3 point lead. A three point attempt by Geneseo was no good and the ballgame was over.

Geneseo was led by Connor Fedge with 16 points (5x12 fg, 0x1 3's 6x7 ft), 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Gordon Lyons had 15 pts (6x9 fg, 3x6 ft) and Matt Curry added 12 (4x5 fg, 4x5 3's, 0x2 ft). Blue Knights shot 27x53 from the field (50.9 %) 5x11 from long distance (45.5%) but only 14x25 from the line (56%). They lost the rebounding battle 32-25 but only had 11 turnovers to 18 for the Redhawks.

Roberts Wesleyan got a career high from Mike Stone as he was deadly from long range nailing 5 three pointer in 5 attempts to claim scoring honors for the game with 25 points. Overall he was 9x14 from the field and 2x3 from the line. Devin Grimes has a double-double with 16 pts (5x11 fg, 0x2 3's. 6x9 ft) and 13 rebounds. He added 3 assists 2 steals and 2 blocks for a solid all around performance. Freshman Tyrel Dixon added 11 points as he went 6x6 from the line including the last 4 Redhawk points that gave them the win. Wesleyan was 25x47 from the field (53.2%) a sizzling 9x13 (69.2%) from behind the arc, thanks to Stone's heroics and 17x22 from the line (77.3 %) Tough to lose when you shoot the ball that well.

The Blue Devils will now take on RIT Saturday at 1:00 PM at Roberts Wesleyan in the 7th place game. They fall to 2-3 on the year.

Roberts Wesleyan now 3-3, will face Brockport in the 5th place game at 3:00 PM Saturday also in the Redhawks gym.

Games on tap for today

Geneseo vs RIT at Roberts Wesleyan

I'm taking Geneseo here but just realized the game started at 1:00 PM  Can't find a live stats link but based on Brockport's win over RIT yesterday I think the Blue Knights will be equally successful. I think it will be by a similar margin so I'll go with Geneseo  72 -56.

Brockport @ Roberts Wesleyan 3:00 PM  Wendy's  Classic 5th place game.

I'm using the same logic here as I did in the RIT-Geneseo matchup. If Wesleyan can beat Geneseo then I think they will probably take down the Golden Eagles. Again a similar score as the Geneseo game. Roberts Wesleyan 73-70 over Brockport but I hope I get this one wrong.

Conference games today all at 4:00 PM

Potsdam at Oswego

The Lakers start a new streak today. I don't think it will reach 32 again but pretty sure they'll get #1 this afternoon. Hayden Ward will be unstoppable again and the Lakers will win this game by double digits. Oswego is favored by 18.5 points and that sounds about right. Oswego 84 Potsdam 66.

New Paltz at Buffalo State

New Paltz played a double OT game yesterday and came away with a 92-87 win. I think they might be a little tired out. Bengals should get the job done here even if the Hawks had fresh wheels. Oddsmakers have made the Bengals a 9.5 point favorite but New Paltz has always struggled in Buffalo. I'll take the Bengals 85-73.

Oneonta at Fredonia

Flip a coin. Hard game to predict. Posted line also calls it close as Fredonia is rated a half point favorite. I'll go with the home team to win a tight one as the Blue Devils can't afford a lost weekend at home. If they lose this game 10th place could be their permanent resting place. Blue Devils 68-64.

Plattsburgh at Cortland

Red Dragons have beaten the Cardinals in 4 straight games over the past 2 years and 6 of 10 in the past 6 years. I'd like to think that streak is about to end. The point spread in this game favors Cortland by 7.5, but I have a feeling it'll be closer. My head tells me that the Red Dragon sharpshooters will do their thing, especially on the floor of Corey Gymnasium but my heart wants a Cardinal win in the worst way. jdex is down in Florida laughing at me because he feels my dilemma. Cardinals hung with Cortland in 2 of their 3 games last year and I know this team is better than last year's version, but unlike the Lakers, who lost a big part of their offense, the Red Dragons didn't lose a thing. I still want to root for the Cards and I don't care if I get this one right. I said at the start of the weekend I'd be happy if Plattsburgh went 1-1 on this trip, but I suddenly have gotten greedy. I'll take the Cards in another upset, 73-70.

Just found out the score of the Geneseo-RIT game by checking the Tigers website. It looks like the Blue Knights won 67-58 but no details or box score from RIT or Geneseo.

Found the Roberts Wesleyan website and discovered they have a video of the Brockport-Roberts Wesleyan game. Here's the link if anyone's interested: http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/rwc.portal#

Game is at halftime and Brockport is up 38-35. Live stats from the link as well. Shows the Eagles twice had a nine point lead at 32-23 and 34-25 but the Redhawks have come back to make it a single possession game at the break.

Redhawks Devin Grimes leads all scorers with 17 points and 14 rebounds. He had a double-double yesterday against Geneseo of 16 points and 13 rebounds. He's already beat both those figures in the first half alone. John Ivy leads the Eagles with 13 points and 4 rebounds. Matt Lee with 9 points. Redhawks' Grimes has as many rebounds as the entire Brockport team.

Cortland with 36-26  lead over guest Plattsburgh at the half. RDragons by 34-23 before Cards rebound. Appears Pburgh depth trying to take a toll. Starters don't see a lot of court time. Twelve Burghers with minutes, though starters have done most of the scoring. Cards under 30 percent from the field. H. Hefele wth 10 points for CSt, K. McMahon with nine. J. Perez with 7 pts for Pburgh, C. Manning 6

Oswego leads Potsdam 35-32 at the half. Hayden Ward with 13 and Sean Michele with 10. Rob Duquette with 7 for Potsdam.

Buffalo State with a 54-40 lead over New Paltz at the break.  Rod Epps with 15 and Jake Simmons with 11. Maurice Miles with 10. Hawks led by Shareff Taylor with 10, Deveion McRae and Shalik Jenkins with 8 each.

Bengals out to a double digit lead 4 minutes and 20 seconds into the game at 18-6 . Built the lead to 16 but Hawks came back and cut it to 6 at 25-19 with 10:20 to go. Bengal go on a 14-5 spurt to build it back to 15. Enjoyed largest lead again at 48-32 and settle for the 14 point advantage.

Plattsburgh scoreless from 16:03 to 9:22 till M. Mitchell triple ...........Still, Cortland far from on fire and margin just under 10. Cards . McIntosh had gotten Pburgers within three with nine point personal streak. Burgh still under 30 percent fg.  Corts hike margin to 15 on three from B. Manning with seven minutes left ........

I'm listening to Bobby Comstock's broadcast jdex and watching live stats, so quit rubbing it in. ;D Plattsburgh is shooting like 30 %.

Live stats is actually a number of seconds ahead of the live broadcast.

More updates.

Fredonia leads Oneonta 54-53 with 6:17 to go. fredonia's website says that Fredonia beat Oneonta about a half hour ago but it's the women's score posted on the men's homepage and schedule along with the women's box score. Apparentlya slight mixup.

Oswego over Potsdam 64-53 with 2 minutes to go.

Cortland 68, Plattsburgh 55

Burgh gets within 11 at 3:22 on S. McIntosh FTs to finish off 17 pt game. Corts regain balance and pull away. Twas 67-52 at 1:15. Certainly not a Cardinal shooting highlight reel! J. Perez with 7 pts, 7 rebs in 26'. Besides McIntosh, G. Tibbs' 10 pts only other double figure producer. Six straight Tibbs' markers helped Pburgh get back into the contest. Cortland glad to see K. McMahon shine inside with 15 pts(6x11fg), 11 rebs before fouling out after 31' stint. H. Hefele with 15 pts(6x11fg), 4 rebs, 4pf; J. Smith 13 pts, 4 assts; J. Winter 9 pts, 3 assts; L. Herron 8 pts, 4 rebs; B. Manning 5 assts, 7 pts.

Am sure Magic will expound!!!
