Their leading scorer and rebounder 6' 7" Hayk Gyokchan looks like a beast (on paper). .

Gyokchan 16- 18 for 40 points..including 6 - 3 pointers!!! The "beast" lives as F & M pulls away at the end and wins 55-71.

Cards can get some redemption tommorrow against Salisbury who was easily handled today by Eastern Conn.

I know all about GYOKCHAN. He was the big man on my NCAA Fantasy team last year when no one knew who he was and everybody thought I misspelled his name when I drafted him. He carried my team for quite a while. He was good then, and he's that much better now. 6'7" and he thinks he'sRay Allen with his three point shooting !!. We should have been all over him from the git go. I was afraid he was going to kill us and he did....from the moment the game started. He hit double figures so fast my head was spinning.
Magic,
It is frustrating, knowing that your team can play better than it did!!, But even excellent teams have off days,(nights).  Gyokchan, was phenominal last night, and as you said, without a key on him, it was going to be a long night. At least the video feed was good!!! 8-)
The Cards will be back in the win side tonight!!!

ECSUalum,
Thanks for the vote of support concerning the Cardinals. I hope you're right and they win the consolation game tonight against Salisbury. I'd love nothing more than to see your Warriors take down Franklin & Marshall tonight. If Salzillo can repeat his performance of last night it's certainly possible, but it's hard to imagine he can stay that hot for that long. I think Gyokchan will have another huge game for the Diplomats, hopefully he won't get a lot of help from his teammates. I think the Warriors will stay close but in the end F & M will probably hold them off, something like 68-63. I hope I'm wrong though.

Plattsburgh State vs Salisbury  5:00 PM Consolation game of the Franklin & Marshall Tournament in Lancaster Pa.

Hopefully the Cardinals can rebound tonight and get the W against Salisbury. Niether team looked very good last night and I'm expecting Salisbury to regroup off their poor effort against a hot shooting Eastern Connecticut. The Cardinals should improve off their performance last night as well. No line posted for this game but I think if there was one it would have made the Sea Gulls a 2 point favorite. I'm going with the Cardinals to get back on the winning track and think they win this one 75-69.

Plattsburgh State losing to Salisbury 44-31 at the half.

Cardinals needed to come out of the break and make something happen. Salisbury was the team that came to paly in the 2nd half however as they have quickly doubled their 13 point halftime lead and now lead 66-40 with 12:16 to play. Cardinals look lost and Curle has just pulled all five guys for a new five. Good move, as it can't hurt.

Salisbury 87 Plattsburgh State 69

This was a good game for the first 14 minutes of the first half. Salisbury was up 24-22 with 7:18 left in the period when the Sea Gulls went on a 20-6 run over the next 5 minutes to open up a 16 point advantage at 44-28. A 3 pointer by the Card's Jordan Moody cut it to a 13 point halftime edge. As mentioned earlier it was the Sea Gulls who came out of the break with some urgency and another 16-5 run gave them a 24 point 60-36 lead and this ballgame was over. Cardinals with a chance to make a statement this weekend, but instead discover they need to improve in a number of areas to compete with the better teams in D3.

Jordan Moody with 11 points led the Cardinals in scoring. John Perez and Kalik Parker both added 10 points. Plattsburgh shot 26x60 from the field (44%) but only 4x23 from long distance (18%).

Plattsburgh falls to 7-4 and is off until Jan. 11th when they travel west to face Geneseo then Brockport.

Two games on tap for tonight.

New Paltz State at Delaware Valley  7:00 Pm

The Hawks are back in action after a lay off of over three weeks. Delaware Valley had two games last week when they played in a tournament at Catholic down in DC, winning 1 and losing 1. The Aggies are a slight favorite to win this game but I think that New Paltz is the better team. Just wish they had a game under their belt after the long layoff. Even so I'll go with the Hawks and hope they can overcome the rust. I see them winning a close one 84-81.

St. Lawrence at Oswego State   7:00 PM

The Saints handed Oswego one of their four losses last year when they surprised the Lakers on opening day of the 2011-12 season by a score of 66-62. It marked the 2nd year in a row that the Saints upset Oswego as they defeated the Lakers 58-57 in January of 2011. During that 2 year stretch, Oswego only lost 3 regular season home games and 2 of them were to St. Lawrence. Not only that but the Saints have owned the Lakers for the past 6 years as they have won 5 of those 6 meetings.  Needless to say the Lakers will have revenge in mind when they tangle tonight. The Saints are struggling this year as they come into the game with a 2-5 record and the 2 wins were against less than stellar competiton. They beat a 1-10 Elmira team (who finally broke into the win column last night) and SUNY-Canton who is worse than Elmira.   The Saints have already lost to Plattsburgh State and Potsdam State and tomorrow night will take on Brockport State. They might as well join the conference. Both teams are coming off long layoffs so the game might be a bit sloppy. Oddsmakers have made Oswego an 18 point favorite in this one. That seems about right. Oswego beat Ithaca by 12 and Ithaca beat St. Lawrence by 19. I think the Lakers will win 85-65.

magicman

Oswego State 62  St. Lawrence 52

Hayden Ward with 22 points was the games' leading scorer as the Lakers gain a measure of revenge over the Saints. Teams trade baskets through the early going until the Lakers go ahead 19-11 with 7 minutes left in the period. Saints closed to 21-18 but Oswego ended the half with a 10-2 run and went into the break up 31-20.

Still up 10 39-29 after 4 minutes of 2nd half play the Lakers used another 10-2 burst to open up their largest lead of the night at 49-31. Saints did manage to peck away at the lead and actually got it to within 6 points at 58-52, on a 3 pointer by Matt McTague, with 2:30 left in the game. Those would be their final points though as the Lakers' Sean Michele would hit 4 straight free throws to close this one out.

Chris Gilkes was the only other Laker in double figures as he had 13 points and 4 rebounds. Michele added 6 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Ward led the Lakers in rebounding, as well as scoring, with 7 boards.

Neither team shot particularly well as the Lakers went 22x53 (41.5%) from the field and 4x14 from the 3 point line (28.6%). Foul shooting was a plus as they made 14 of 17 (82.4%). Lakers were outrebounded by the Saints 37-29 but only had 5 turnovers to 14 for St. Lawrence.

Brady Condlin was the only St. Lawrence player to hit double figures as he had 14 points and 7 rebounds. Janpeter Brase grabbed 9 rebounds and scored 8 points. Trent Benton had 9 points and 6 boards. Saints shot 20x53 (37.7%) from the field, 5x15 (33.3%) from downtown, and 7x11 (63.6%) from the line.

Oswego ups their record to 8-1 (2-1) and will host RIT on Saturday at 4:00 PM

St. Lawrence falls to 2-6 and will travel to Brockport on Saturday at 4:00 PM as they look to avoid an 0-4 SUNYAC record.

Delaware Valley 74  New Paltz 72

Once again the Hawks come up just short against a non-conference opponent. This one surely has to hurt as New Paltz fought back from several 15 point 2nd half deficits. The Hawks were trailing at the half 39-31 and fell into a deeper hole when the Aggies opened the 2nd period with a 13-6 run to go in front 52-37. Still up 56-41, with 14:38 to play, the Aggies were outscored 25-9 over the next nine minutes as the Hawks went in front 66-65. The teams traded leads until New Paltz down 69-68 got a hoop and harm from Shareef Taylor as the 3 point play put the Hawks in front 71-69. After the Aggies missed on their next possession, the Hawks Matt Devine was fouled and made 1 of 2 to make it a 3 point Hawk advantage, with 2:43 left to play. New Paltz would fail to score another point. Both teams would misfire on their next possession and then Del Valley hit a bucket with 1:06 remaining to make it 72-71. Again New Paltz missed their next attempt from the field and fouled the Aggies Zach Sly with 25 seconds left. Sly made the first to tie it up but missed the 2nd and Shareef Taylor got the rebound for the Hawks and a chance to win the game with the last shot. The Hawks, never got that shot off as they turned it over with 7 seconds left. Delaware Valley took a timeout and with 2 seconds left scored on a layup to walk off with the win.

Shareef Taylor led New Paltz with 26 points (10x17 fg, 0x1 3's, 6x8 ft) 14 rebounds, and 5 steals. Matt Devine had 15 pts (4x17 fg, 2x4 3's, 5x6 ft) and 9 rebounds. Andrew Joseph added 11 points (5x8 fg 0x1 3's, 1x1 ft), 4 rebounds and 5 assists. Hawks shot 25x65 (38.5%) from the field, only 2x14 (14.3%) from behind the arc and 20x25 (80%) from the stripe. They won the battle of the glass 48 to 38 and had 16 TO's to 14 for the Aggies.

Del Valley had 4 players in double figs led by Daulton Derr with 19 points. Jeremy Becket had a double-double of 18 points and 16 rebounds. Zach Sly had 13 points and 8 assists, while Jay Donovon added 11 points and 4 assists. Aggies were 27x63 (42.9%) from the field, 9x23 from downtown (39.1%) and 11x21 from the line (52.4%).

Hawks are now 4-7 (2-2) on the season and their next game will be Tuesday Jan. 8th when they host Cortland at 8:00 PM.

Jake Simmons is the latest recipient of the SUNYAC Player of the Week Award. Jake was honored for the period from December 9th through Dec 30th. This takes in the 3 games that the Bengals played on 12-14, 12-21, and 12-22 which were all Bengal victories. On 12-14 against Central Penn  Jake broke the all time Buffalo State scoring record. He eclipsed NBA great, Randy Smith's career points total of 1712 with a career best 43 point effort to end that game with 1722 total points. Jake was 15x23 that night including 6 of 11 from downtown and a perfect 7x7 from the stripe. A week later against Eastern Connecticut Jake had 19 points and the next day against Coe College he went off for 31 points. During that 3 game stretch Jake averaged 31 ppg and was 32x55 from the field...58.1%, 15x31 from downtown...48.3%, and 14x15 from the foul line...93.3%. Not too shabby!! His point total now stands at 1772 and there's a very good chance that before the year is over Jake will break the 2000 point mark.

Here's the write up from the SUNYAC website:  I like mine better. ;D

Jake Simmons, Buffalo State
Rochester, NY / School of the Arts

"Jake Simmons scored a career-best 43 points in a win over Central Penn and broke former NBA All-Star Randy Smith's all-time Buffalo State scoring record of 1,712 career points. Simmons averaged 31.0 points during the three-game winning streak."

Games on tap for Saturday:

RIT at Oswego  4:00 PM

Oswego should win this game. I think the Lakers will handle the Tigers without too much difficulty. Point spread favors the Lakers by 14 and I see them winning 80-64.

St. Lawrence at Brockport  4:00 PM

Golden Eagles try and keep the Saints winless in SUNYAC play. Oddsmakers have Brockport favored by 11. Saints make may a game of it but will come up short once again. Brockport will prevail 76-67.

Potsdam at Manhattanville  4:00 PM

The Bears will try and get a win streak started here as they go against the Valiants but they haven't played in almost a month since they beat Fredonia back on December 8th. Point spread has Manhattanville favored by 4 but I think being on the road and rusty will make for a bigger margin than that. Manhattanville will take this one 84-76.

magicman

Apparently  the Potsdam-Manhattanville game started at 3:00 PM and not 4:00 PM as I posted earlier. The Bears trail at the half 46-45. Curtis Pierce with 13 points to lead Potsdam. Go Bears.

magicman

Brockport leads St Lawrence 41-25 at the half.

Potsdam leads Manhattanville 70-67 with 6:45 left to play. GO BEARS.

magicman

#4407
Potsdam's Curtis Pierce scores with 9 seconds left to give the Bears an 82-80 lead. Manhattanville calls timeout and then calls a second timeout. They turn the ball over with 6 seconds left and foul the Bears Zac Adams. He makes both free throws and then the Bears Mark Lake steals the ball and makes a layup at the buzzer and the Bears win 86-80.

magicman

Oswego's live stats quit working with the score 21-14 in favor of the Lakers with 6:58 left in the 1st period. No video and now no live stats.

Brockport leading St Lawrence by 20 points early in the 2nd half. Annoucers never give the score and they won't show the scoreboard in the video cast so I don't know the actual score.

magicman

Brockport leads 67-44 over the Saints with about 10 minutes left to play

Oswego leads RIT 53-48 with 5:22 left in the game.
