Geneseo 66 Plattsburgh 64

Plattsburgh almost overcame an 18 point deficit in this one but it's tough to beat a good Geneseo team and the men in striped shirts at the same time. Someone needs to teach that crew what a traveling call is all about. I don't usually complain about the officiating but it seems there's always a couple of games every year where one team ususally comes out on the short end of the whistle. Tonight was Plattsburgh State's turn to experience a lousy crew. I watched this crew call so many cheap fouls and then not call some obivous muggings that it was ridiculous. I will give the Blue Knights credit for hitting some key shots when the Cardinals got it to a one or two possession game late in the 2nd half. When Plattsburgh's Mike Mitchell hit a big three to make it 50-44 with 8 minutes left, Geneseo's Jordan Jones came down and hit a jumper to counter that basket. Then the Cards' Ed Correa came down and buried a three to narrow the lead to 5 and Jones retaliated with a three of his own to build the lead back to 8. Plattsburgh's Kalik Parker then made a three pointer and Shavar Fields made 2 free throws to make it a one possession game at 55-52 with 5 mintes left in the game. Once again the Knights responded on a layup by Connor Fedge and a triple by Andy Drescher to restore an 8 point advantage. A Plattsburgh turnover resulted in another layup by Fedge and the 10 point lead with 2:29 left proved too much for the Cards to overcome. The Cards did cut it to 5 points at 64-59 on an old fashioned 3 point play by John Perez with 1 minute to go. After a Geneseo foul gave the ball back to Plattsburgh, the Cards misfired and had to foul with only 37 ticks left. Marcus Hoy hit both foul shots to make it a 7 point lead. Plattsburgh missed a 3 pointer but Shamoy McIntosh got the rebound and scored to make it 66-61. The Cards had to foul but let too much time tick away and when they did foul there was only 10 seconds remaining. Geneseo missed the front end of a 1 &1, Cards got the rebound and McIntosh buried a three with 5 seconds left to make 66-64. They fouled with 3 seconds to play and after Jordan Jones missed the first one I think he missed the second one on purpose and the Cards could only get off a half court heave that didn't come close for a final shot.

Geneseo was led by Connor Fedge with 15 points (7x10 fg, 0x1 3's, 1x2 ft). Ryan Riefenhauser had 13 points (6x6 fg, 1x3 ft) and 7 rebounds. Jordan Jones also had 13 points (5x8 fg, 1x1 3's, 2x6 ft). Gordon Lyons filled up the stat sheet with 6 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Marcus Hoy led the Knights with 7 assists. He only had 2 points but they were 2 big free throws which proved to be the winning points.

Blue Knights shot an excellent 27x47 from the field (57.4%), 6x13 from 3 point land (46.2%), but only 6x13 from the line (46.2%). They won the rebounding battle 31 to 27 and had 16 turnovers to 17 for the Cards.

Plattsburgh was led by Chris Manning with 13 points (6x9 fg, 1x1 ft). He also had 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Shamoy McIntosh had 12 points (5x11 fg, 2x6 3's) while John Perez added 10 points (4x6 fg, 2x4 ft) and 4 rebounds.

Cards were 25x56 from the field (44.6%), only 6x19 from long distance (31.6%) and 8x12 from the stripe (66.7%). I have to question some of the stats in the box score. They show Billy O'Shea with 18 minutes of playing time. Yet he has nothing but zeros in his stat line. No shots, no rebounds, no fouls, no turnovers...nothing. O'Shea has been averaging about 6 minutes per game. I don't even recall seeing him in this game. They also show the Cards with 17 turnovers and Geneseo with 10 steals. I think they gave the Blue Knights a bunch of steals for all those traveling calls the zebras made against the Cards. ;)

Geneseo uses the UStream website for a video feed of their games. There is no announcer, no score or clock anywhere on the screen and the only time you know the score is when there is a time out. Then the camera will pan to the scoreboard. The absolute worst thing though is the commercials that run thoughout the broadcast and always while the game is in progress. These aren't commercials that are superimposed over the game. These are commercials that for a full 30 seconds black the game out just like a television commercial. You would think if they have to run commercials that it would be done during time outs. Especially when it's a close game and every possession is important. But wait... time for a 30 second message from the sponsors. Live stats never existed either. Frozen on a women's score part way through their game. Pretty sad and frustrating for the viewer. Oh well.

Geneseo takes over sole possession of 1st place in the YAC with a 4-1 conference record and improves to 8-4 overall. They will host Potsdam State later today at 4 PM.

Plattsburgh drops into a 6 way tie for 2nd place with a 3-2 conference record. The Cards fall to 7-5 overall. They will travel to Brockport to take on the Golden Eagles also at 4 PM today.

I doubt there's another conference in the country that has a 6 way tie for 2nd place. ;D

All 10 teams in action this afternoon. All games at 4:00 Pm. Home teams are tough to beat in the YAC. More of the same today in most instances.

Buffalo State at Oswego State

Two of the 6 teams tied for 2nd place. Hard to beat Oswego in Laker Hall. Plattsburgh did it earlier this year but I think the Bengals come out on the short end here. Point spread has the Lakers favored by 3. Sounds about right. Not sure if Buffalo State can contain Hayden Ward.  Oswego has won 5 of the last 6 meetings. Make it 6 out of 7, Lakers win 80-76.

Fredonia State at Cortland State

Blue Devils go from the frying pan into the fire. An 18 point loss yesterday to Oswego could be the better effort for their weekend on the road. Cortland can't afford another loss if they want to keep pace with Geneseo. Pointspread favors the Red Dragons by 19. Cortland has won 6 of the last 7 in this series. Red Dragons take another 83-58.

New Paltz State at Oneonta State

Hawks coming off a big win against Cortland, will look to make it a Red Dragon double this week. Oneonta coming off a big upset of Oswego looking to get some more respect. Oddsmakers have made the Hawks a 3 point favorite here. I think that New Paltz stays in the hunt for a playoff spot and will take this one 78-70.

Potsdam State at Geneseo

Bears have split the last 6 meetings with the Blue Knights. They played Brockport tough yesterday only to come up short in the final few minutes. Geneseo sits atop the conference and won't want to fall back into the pack. Pointspread favors the Blue Knights by 10. I think the Bears will come up short again. Geneseo wins this one 75-67.

Plattsburgh State at Brockport State

Plattsburgh coming off a 2 point loss to Geneseo yesterday will look to get back on the winning track after 3 straight losses. This is a matchup of 2 more teams tied for 2nd place. Teams have split their last 8 meetings in one of the hottest rivalries in the YAC over the past 10 years. Point spread has the Golden Eagles favored by 5. It's time for the Cardinals to break out of their slump but it won't be easy against a Brockport team that's reeled off 6 wins in a row. Still I'm going with the Cardinals to break the home court spell here. Plattsburgh wins a close one 82-79.

Halftime, Geneseo 43, Potsdam 25. Live stats frozen from the women's game.  Looking like a douple dip for the Bears this weekend.

**Final score 79-69

Not as close as I predicted but only missed the Lakers score by a single point. Chris Gilke with 24 points, 8 rebounds and Hayden Ward with 23 points, 11 rebounds to power Oswego. Sean Michele also with double figures with 10 points.  Rod Epps led the Bengals with 17 points and Chris Castren had 10. Seth Runge with 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Lakers down by 9 at 28-19 with 7:41 left in the 1st half mount a comeback and forge ahead for good on a 3 pointer by Kyle Covley with 1:40 left in the period enroute to a 39-36 halftime lead. A 13-0 run to open the 2nd half spelled doom for the Bengals. Lakers opened up a 19 point lead at 57-38 with 13:44 left to play. The Bengals didn't fold however and fought back to get it to within 5 points at 73-68 with 1:49 left to play but 4 straight points by the Lakers put this one out of reach. Oswego goes to 4-2 in the conference (11-2 overall) and Buff State falls to 3-3 (8-4 overall).
Oswego is off until Friday the 18th when they host Brockport State.
Buffalo State will host Geneseo on Tuesday the 15th.

** Final score Cortland 84 Fredonia 61

Pretty darn close on this prediction. I only missed Cortland by a point and Fredonia was only a 3 pointer from my score. Blue Devils hung with the Red Dragons for the first 10 minutes and actually had a 13-7 lead at one point. Tied at 17, Cortland scored 9 straight points but the Blue Devils  answered with their own 9-0 run. It would be their last hurrah. Cortland would end the half on a 16-2 run to go into the break up 42-28. A 15-5 spurt to open the 2nd half pushed the lead to a 26 point advantage at 57-31 and this game was over.

Cortland had 4 players in double figures led by Kevin McMahon with 18 points. Jesse Winter had 14, Lamard Herron had 13 and Jeremy Smith had 10. Dalton Kashmer led Fredonia and was the game's high scorer with 25 points. Robert Lyles had 11.  Cortland stays tied for second with a 4-2 conference record (10-3 overall) while Fredonia is now 1-5 (5-7 overall).
Cortland is off until Friday the 18th when they host Geneseo before they travel to Brockport on the 19th.
Fredonia will host Brockport on Tuesday the 15th.

** Final score New Paltz 79 Oneonta 70

This prediction was almost perfect as I missed by a single point. Matt Devine had to go and make that final free throw to spoil my day. Teams played  fairly even through the first 11 minutes and then the Hawks up 20-18 went on a 15-3 run to go in front 35-21 with 5:38 left in the half.  They built the lead to 19 before the Red Dragons got a 3 point play to make it 46-30 at the break. Oneonta came out of the locker room and doubled up the Hawks 22-11 through the first 9 minutes to make it a 5 point game at 57-52 and then scored after a New Paltz misfire to narrow the gap to a single possession. Hawks would open up a 7 point advantage on several ocassions but Oneonta would come back each time and closed to within 2 points at 70-68 with 3:40 left in the game. Up 72-70, the Hawks got a layup from Shareef Taylor and after the teams traded turnovers, Oneonta turned it over again and Taylor scored with another layup to make it 76-70 with 1:29 left. Again Oneonta committed a turnover but the Hawks gave it right back. Red Dragons needing to score then turned it over for the 4th straight time. They had to foul and Devine made 3 of 4 down the stretch for the final margin. Not going to win any close games with 4 turnovers in a row in the final 2 minutes.

New Paltz had 4 players in double figures led by Shareef Taylor with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Deveino McRae had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Matt Devine had 14 points and 6 rebounds, while Taylor Sowah had 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Oneonta's Zach Mager grabbed scoring honors with 26 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds. Jackson Zuvic added 14 points.
New Paltz also claims a share of second place with a 4-2 conference record (6-7 overall) and Oneonta drops into a tie for last place at 1-5 (2-10 overall)
New Paltz is off until next weekend when they travel North to face Plattsburgh then Potsdam.
Oneonta  will make the same trip taking on Potsdam first then Plattsburgh.

** Final score Geneseo 78 Potsdam 58

Final score wasn't too far off from my prediction as I missed the Blue Devils by 3 and Potsdam came up a bit shorter than I thought they would. Potsdam got out of the blocks with a 7-2 lead but Geneseo quickly took over and turned it into a runaway. Down 9-8 the Blue Knights went on a 12-0 run to open up a double digit lead with 10:45 left to play in the half. Still up by 12 at 32-20, Geneseo got another 9-1 spurt to make it 41-21 and went into the break up 43-25. They opened the 2nd half with another 12-2 run and the lead was 28 at 55-27 and the Bears were done. They did cut it to 15 inside of a minute. Live stats showed a final of 76-60 but must have credited a Geneseo basket to the Bears because it's now posted at 78-58.

Geneseo was led by Jordan Jones with 15 points. Matt Curry had 13 points and 7 rebounds, while Connor Fedge had 13 points and 4 rebounds. Gordon Lyons had 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Curtis Pierce was the only Potsdam player in double figures as he shared scoring honors with 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Rob Duquette had 8 points and 7 rebounds.
Geneseo retains sole possession of 1st place in the YAC with a 5-1 record (9-4 overall) while Potsdam slips into a 3 way tie for last place with a 1-5 record (4-8 overall)
Geneseo will travel to Buffalo State on Tuesday and head to Cortland on Friday the 18th.
Potsdam will play their final out of conference game on Tuesday as they host Utica College. They will then face Oneonta and New Paltz on the weekend.

** Final score Plattsburgh 82 Brockport 81

Again I almost came up with a perfect score as I nailed the Cardinals' 82 and Port got a 3 pointer that was a tenth of a second from not counting to go from 78 to 81.
This contest was easily the game of the day in the YAC. These teams traded leads throughout but more often than not it was the Golden Eagles playing catchup with the Cards. The first half saw 11 lead changes and 4 ties before the Cardinals finally broke on top. The Cardinals were down 29-27 with 6:02 to play when Kalik Parker came off the bench and buried three 3 pointers in a row for the Cards to give them the lead at 36-30. After Brockport cut it to 36-33 Parker drained another 3 pointer and the Cards got a hoop and harm from John Perez to make it 42-35. A Brockport triple by John Ivy and 2 more free throws by Perez made it a 44-38 Plattsburgh advantage at the break. Brockport scored the 1st 5 points of the 2nd period to cut it to 1 but the Cards used an 8-1 spurt to go back up 54-46 for the games largest lead to that point with 15:34 to play. The Cards would open up the biggest lead of the game helped by 6 points from Shamoy McIntosh as they went in front 67-56 with 11:35 left. Back came the Golden Eagles with 11 unanswered points fueled by a pair of triples from Jordan Major and another 3 pointer plus a layup from Brandon Caruthers. Brockport would regain the lead at 71-69 on a layup by Matt Lee but the Cards would score 9 straight points, 4 by McIntosh and 3 by Perez, to go in front 78-71 with 2:08 to play. Brockport would close to within 2 at 78-76 with 30 seconds left. The Cards then went 3 of 4 from the line to make it 81-76. Port's Dorian Hayden got a layup with 8 seconds left to make it a one possession game and the Eagles fouled freshman Ed Correa on the inbounds pass. Correa went to the line to try and make it a 2 possession game. After missing the first, the rookie made a huge free throw and the Eagles could only get off a 3 pointer at the buzzer by John Ivy that was good to make the final a 1 point game.

Plattsburgh placed 4 players in double digits led by John Perez with a double-double of 17 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out with 3:32 left to play. Shamoy McIntosh had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Kalik Parker hit some huge 3 pointers and ended up 5x9 from downtown for 15 points. Parker also had 5 rebounds and 3 blocked shots in 22 minutes of action. Ezra Hodgson also scored 15 points for the Cards. Point guard Chris Manning only scored 5 points but once again filled up the stat sheet with 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Freshman Ed Correa had 9 points in 14 minutes with a pair of 3 pointers. Plattsburgh shot 29x71 from the field (40.8%), 8x23 from the 3 point line (34.8%) and 16x24 from the foul line (66.7%) They edged the Eagles on the boards 44-43 and only had 9 turnovers to 12 for Brockport.
Brockport was led by John Ivy who was the game's high scorer with 21 points. Ivy also had 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Brandon Caruthers the newest Golden Eagle continues to make his presence felt as he totaled 15 points. Matt Lee had a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Lance Legister also had 13 points. Jordan Major had 10 points and 5 rebounds going 3x5 from downtown. Brockport shot 29x66 from the field (43.9%), 15x38 from downtown (39.5%) and only 8x18 from the line (44.4%). That may have cost them this game.

Plattsburgh joins 3 other teams in 2nd place with a 4-2 conference record (8-5 overall). Brockport sees it's 6 game winning streak come to an end and is now 3-3 in the YAC (8-5 overall) and tied with Buffalo State for 6th place, the final playoff position.

Plattsburgh is off until next weekend when they host New Paltz and Oneonta on Friday and Saturday.
Brockport will travel to Fredonia on Tuesday to take on the Blue Devils.

Bengalsrule

Tough weekend in the 315!!  Cortland smacks my beloved BENGALS. From Start to finish it was a superior job by the Red Dragons. One encouraging thing was the play of the 2nd liners...Brad Doyley, Peter Murphy, Chris Boyd, Kojo Mensah, Chris Castren and Leon Moise. These young men were a bright light in an other wise dim day at Cortland.

Must also say kudo's do whomever does the stats for Cortland. One of the BENGAL coaches told me that this was the first road game where they had no disputes at half time about the stats. I must let Franelia know to commend the stats folks...they do a pretty good job :D. Music is not as good as Postdam though ???

Decided to stick around for the Oswego game today (great friday night rate at the Hilton garden Inn..includes a buffet breakfast ;D ). Another slow start for my BENGALS who fought back and got within 3 by halftime. That was short lived as Oswego came out and scored the first 13 points of the second half. That promtped a complete substitution and the 2nd liners came in (see Cortland notes for names) and fought extremely hard and did not let the Oswego lead grow any larger.

With the starters rested and playing good, Buff State got the Oswego lead down to 5 with 1:49 left. But 1 turnover at the 1:03 mark with Gilkes scoring afterwards,  followed by another BENGAL turnover at the 50 second mark...did my BENGALS in.

Kudos to both Cortland and Oswego. Any trips to the 315 will certainly be stressful for the rest on the 'Yac!

Thanks Bengalsrule for the kind words. While I'm on the keyboard for the games, I'm only as good as my spotter, and he's been doing a nice job this year. I'll let him know his good work has been noticed. I will also agree that our music is awful - we're trying to work on it, but not good so far...

More importantly, thanks for stopping over and saying hi - it was nice meeting you. Best of luck the rest of the season, and keep up the good posts (Magicman too!!). I don't post here too often, but I do enjoy reading about what's happening throughout the league.

Any ideas on who will be player of the year and First team in the SUNYAC?

thebear

Hayden Ward is POY at this point.

First team is Rod Epps, Jesse Winter, Matt Devine, Connor Fedge, John Ivy

Curtis Pierce deserves 1st team, but Bears have to start winning some games.
