Cortland State's Kevin McMahon has been selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for the week ending 2-2-13. Here's the write up from the YAC website.

Kevin McMahon, Cortland

"Kevin McMahon averaged 17 points and 9.3 rebounds per game and shot 74 percent from the field during a 3-0 week for the Red Dragons. He scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 17 rebounds in an overtime win vs. Brockport Tuesday. He finished with 14 points in a win at Fredonia Friday and scored 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting in a win at Buffalo State Saturday. For the season, McMahon is averaging 13.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and is shooting 68 percent from the field. He ranks third nationally in Div. III in field goal percentage, prior to this past weekend's games."

Fresh off the announcement on Hoopsville seconds ago,  the YAC gets back into the Top 25 as Cortland State checks in at #24 this week.

I had them entering my Top 25 last week in the Posters' Poll at number 25 and after they went 3-0 this past week, with 2 road wins, I moved them up to #22. Glad to see that the real poll followed my lead. ;D

I'd be willing to bet that Dave McHugh had Cortland in his Top 25 this week and possibly last week too as they had their first entrance into the ORV category at that time.

Clearly you don't read my blog where I show my ballot and give my reasons for many of the teams...

Quite the slam-bang outing in Geneseo Saturday night when Brockport edges the Knights 71-70 to give Cortland a bit of first place daylight. Geneseo by 30-29 at the half. Bport moves into a 10 point comfort zone with just under 11 minutes to play and remains on top till an A. Drescher '3' puts the hosts ahead by a point at 2:44. Back and forth  ......M. Lee's trey at 1:10 provides a Bport lead. G. Lyons' layup reverses that for the Gens at 0:11. Lee connects on a pair of free throws at 0:02 and the Eagles are Golden!

J. Ivy 21 pts(9x17fg); B. Caruthers 16 pts(4 3s); Lee 11 pts; B. Bell 8 pts, 7 rebs; D. Klein 7 assts for Bports
C. Fedge 19 pts(6x14fg), 5 rebs, 3 assts; Lyons 15 pts(5x8fg), 11 rebs, 3 assts; Drescher 12 pts(4x6fg, 3x5 3s); R. Riefenhauser 10 pts(4x5fg) fr Gens

Cortland 11-2 (17-3)
Geneseo 10-4 (14-7)
Plattsburgh 9-4 (13-7)
Oswego 8-5 (15-5)
Brockport 8-6 (13-8)
Buffalo St. 7-6 (12-7)
New Paltz 6-7 (8-12)
Potsdam 4-9 (8-12)
Fredonia 2-11 (6-13)
Oneonta 1-12 (2-18)

I believe one of the main reasons why the SUNYAC basketball men's and women's basketball tournaments were reduced to six teams was to bring those tournaments more in line with other SUNYAC sports in terms of postseason participation.

With the basketball changes, no SUNYAC team tournament now has more than six teams qualifying. Here are the current qualifying formulas:

6 of 10 teams qualify in:

Men's Basketball
Women's Basketball
Men's Soccer
Women's Soccer
Softball
Women's Volleyball

6 of 9 teams qualify in:

Men's Ice Hockey

5 of 9 teams qualify in:

Women's Lacrosse (up from 4 in 2012)

4 of 7 teams qualify in:

Field Hockey
Men's Lacrosse
Baseball

This isn't to say that the other "benefits" of reducing the tournament from eight to six teams that have been mentioned by other posters aren't true - I just don't think they were the reasons behind the change. Personally, I like the fact that once the top seed is determined it's known where the semis/finals will be held - makes for easier planning.

You're right I haven't read your blog but only because I didn't know you had one. I must have missed the fact that you did one. Looked for the link but couldn't find it. Would you be so kind as to post it here for me? Thanks. Good show last night.

Here are Massey's ranking of the top East Region teams through games of 2-2-13.
The number after the team is Massey's National ranking. He may update these later today so the numbers may change a bit.

1   Rochester         7
2   Cortland           26
3   Stevens           50
4   NYU                54
5   Hobart             56
6   Geneseo          86
7   Oswego           87
8   Union              88
9   Plattsburgh      91
10 Ithaca             99
11 Buffalo St.       105
12 Brockport        130
13 Clarkson          136
14 St John Fisher  142
15 Nazareth         147
16 Skidmore         157

The top 6 teams on this list that I posted early Monday could very well be the regional rankings tomorrow or something very close to it.
The first three are pretty much a lock, but the next three could be rearranged slightly.

Thanks Pat,
I finally found it after I punched Dave's name into the search box. I was a little confused because when the blog appeared it was for week #7. I finally got to where I wanted to go when I clicked on Top 25 news and notes and it brought up Dave's week #9 vote.

I have now read the blog and saw how you voted in week #9. (Your week #10 vote hasn't been posted yet) It looks like I would have won my bet as you did move them into the Top 25 last week at #24. ;D And after a 3 win week I know you didn't drop them so I'm guessing you moved them up a spot or two.

Jesse Winter in taking over as Cortland's career scoring leader passes Jason Thomas who from 1992-95 totaled 1,419 points. Interestingly, Thomas did not return for his senior season after a school record 628 point All-America junior campaign. Finished that regular season with quite a flourish with 49 (vs. Oneonta in OT) and 48 (vs. Plattsburgh) point outings.

Poor poor showing from the Hawks last night... 5 pts from S. Taylor? D-I talent that can't hack it in D-III...frustrated fan this morning. Donovan looked like a freshman last night. Big man McCrae could be ROY but doesn't play to his strength. Boys show moments of brilliance but can't get it together.

Given the impending snow storm this weekend - I think at least Friday's game might get cancelled - and New Paltz will need a win over Fredonia to even be able to sniff the playoffs - nevermind a must-win over Buff State. Cortland will be looking to kill NP at home next Tuesday, after the upset a few weeks ago.

Was hoping they might be able to crack the top 6 - especially after a strong weekend - but the Hawks have flip-flopped too many times. Coach Rejniak needs to figure out how to get some consistency out of his players next season.

Will keep the faith - but that light is fading fast down in the Valley!

I haven't posted this weeks because a) Monday was busy to begin with and usually I can't get it posted until Tuesday... b) Tuesday was spent with the family in downtown Baltimore to celebrate something called a Super Bowl champion!... c) the computer which my blog is currently saved has decided that starting up is only a partial job... and I can't get to it right now. I may have to rewrite and post it tonight - sorry for the delay... but I did move Cortland up and I know a few other people who are now voting for Cortland as well.

Thanks for the response Dave. I'm glad that Cortland is getting a little recognition. They are a solid team and probably have as many or more solid three point shooting options as any team in the country. Smith (51 3's,), Manning (46 3's), Winter (41 3's), and Hefele (30  3's) are all right around  38% to 40% from downtown and often all 4 are on the court at the same time. Pick your poison because you can't stop them all. With 5 seniors and a junior as the top 6 players in their rotation they have plenty of experience to rely on. i'm pretty sure they'll be in the tournament even if they don't get the automatic bid (which I'm hoping my Cardinals can somehow pull off) and as you stated earlier, here on this board, they could make a nice run into the sweet 16 or further. I like the fact that you show how you voted and why. Please continue to do so. I wish more voters did the same. Another good show on Hoopsville Monday night.
