Buffalo St. defeats Fredonia 92-74. R. Epps with 30 pts(11x19fg), J. Simmons 23(7x16) for Bengals. Freds A. Billups tallies 18 pts

Cortland collects its 20th win and 12th straight to close out a regular season home slate with 40 point crushing of New Paltz. Hawks were the last team to defeat the RDragons on Jan. 8. Corts put this one to bed early, seizing a 48-21 halftime bulge behind sharpshooting of J. Smith and B. Manning, and inside work of K. McMahon. McMahon wound up with 20 pts(8x10fg) and 8 rebs in 24'. Smith poured in 18 pts(7x14fg, 4x9 3s) and dealt 3 assts. Manning had 14 pts(5x9fg), 5 rebs; J. Winter 7 assts; L. Herron 7 stls, 4 assts. CSt was 30x63 from the field, 11x29 3s, 16x21ft and a mere 9 turnovers. Visiting Hawks had 24 turnovers and went 17x57fg, 4x21 3s, 9x12ft. M. Devine with 20 pts(8xq17fg, 2x6 3s), 5 rebs in 30'. D. McRae with 10 boards. S. Taylor 7 pts(3x6fg).

Some things were settled tonight. Cortland with their win over New Paltz has clinched the top seed and regular season championship as they hold the tiebreaker over Plattsburgh. If the Red Dragons should somehow lose their last 2 games and Plattsburgh wins their last 2 both teams would finish at 14-4.Working from top to bottom both teams had identical records against Geneseo, Oswego, Brockport, and New Paltz. That leaves the tiebreaking team Buffalo State and Cortland swept the Bengals while Plattsbutgh split with them.

Buffalo State won at Fredonia to move back into the 6th spot at 8-8. With games in Buffalo against Brockport and on the road at Geneseo, the Bengals will need to win both of these games since New Paltz owns the tiebreaker against them. New Paltz at 8-9 has a single game left as they host Oneonta on Friday night. Those Red Dragons could be pesky but I think the Hawks will win that home game. The Bengals need to get to 10-8 to beat them out. The only other scenario where Buffalo State may get a playoff spot if they don't win their last 2 games is if they go 1-1 and Brockport loses their final pair. Then if Plattsburgh finishes in 2nd place ( and they still haven't clinched it yet) The Hawks at 9-9 would come in 5th beating Port and Buff State by virtue of their win over Cortland. The Bengals would come in 6th place by virtue of their win over Plattsburgh and The Golden Eagles would be on the outside looking in.

Buffalo State has the toughest road of the the 3 teams fighting for the final 2 spots.

Feel better Magic.

I am feeling a bit better but still hacking like hell. Doctor called it the Plattsburgh Crud. Would be feeling a lot better if the Hawks had pulled off the upset tonight. :(  I knew they were up against it but didn't expect them to get monkey stomped!! They are still in good shape for a playoff spot though. I think if they beat Oneonta they're in.

Here is a message I sent to Mr. dcahill earlier tonight as he asked me who I thought would be ranked this week:

Probably the only team that drops out is Geneseo. Plattsburgh should enter the rankings and I think they'll be in 5th place. I think this is what they'll look like.

1.  Rochester     They will still probably be in the top spot even though they were 1-1 for the week.  They have a stronger SOS than Cortland but the Red Dragons could jump over them though and it wouldn't surprise me.

2.   Cortland    A 2-0 week keeps them near or at the top.

3.   Stevens    They were 3-0 including a beatdown of Ithaca so they won't move at all.

4.   Hobart      Also went 3-0 beating the 2 cellar dwellers in the LL but also topping Union in double OT.  They won't move up but Plattsburgh I think is a better team.

5.   Plattsburgh State     A 2-0 week including the win over, then 2nd place in the SUNYAC, Geneseo by 22 points. The 10 point win over Brockport was a solid one as well. The Geneseo win also counts as a win over a regionally ranked opponent which always helps. Plattsburgh now has a 2 game lead in the loss column over Geneseo and a full 2 game lead over Oswego. Plattsburgh is the only team with an outside chance of catching Cortland.

6.   NYU      This spot could go to another team as the Violets had a bad week. Going 0-2 and with a loss to the last place team in the UAA, that won't help their cause. Of the teams that were just outside the rankings last week only Plattsburgh went undefeated. Oswego and Ithaca were ahead of Union I believe,  but they all lost a game last week. Hard to say what the committee will do with that final spot. If they don't give it to NYU it'll probably go to Union since their loss was to Hobart on the road in double OT. I hope not because they don't deserve to be ranked.

So that's my guess when they come out on Wednesday. I was perfect last week with my guesses but the 6th place spot this week is really up for grabs. Actually no one deserves it as none of the contenders have been playing that well. I don't think it really matters because whoever is in 6th place doesn't have a chance of getting a Pool C at large bid. When they are at the table with the teams from the other regions, they won't measure up, if they even get to the table. ;D

This is what I posted a few days ago concerning the regional rankings that will come out today. I think the only thing that I would change is that NYU with 2 losses last week has really tumbled in Massey's rankings. They fell 29 places so I think that Union will be the 6th ranked team this week.

Regional Rankings week #2
1. Rochester I think if Rochester loses another game Cortland MIGHT be able to challenge them for #1 spot
2. Cortland Putting together quite a resume for an at Large bid after Blowing out New Paltz and Oswego
3. Stevens I dont think they are as good as #1 and 2 but still are good 3 guys averaging way over double figures in scoring.
4. Hobart has tooken care of business in the LL and played a Tough non conference SOS.
5. Plattsburgh State No surprise here 2nd best team in the SUNYAC behind Cortland.
6. Ithaca I am very surprised with NCAA. dont think they deserve to be 6th over Oswego State who they lost to earlier in the season.
I wouldve had Oswego State in 6th, but I think the SOS in the early Non Conference Schedule hurt Oswego. Union maybe had an argument but the Non Conference SOS was Horrible. I think St John Fisher was in the mix after last nights blowout at Naz. Fisher doesnt have a bad loss besides Worcester State if they can win both games at home this weekend against Stevens and Hartwick and Ithaca slips up against Naz or Utica. Fisher could get the 6th spot in next weeks Regional Rankings.

Honestly, Rochester is going to be tough to pass. They have right now a 7-2 record against regionally ranked opponents (Cortland 1-1) and they have a .581 SOS (Cortland .511). There are a number of teams with worse WPs and stronger SOSs who are ranked ahead of teams with the opposite info.

Well the regional ranking were released and the top 5 spots were as I listed them earlier. The 6th spot didn't go to NYU or Union as Ithaca was ranked in that position. The Bombers regional record isn't as good as Union's but their SOS is better. I think they deserve to be ranked over the Dutchmen. Ithaca has some injury problems right now though so it remains to be seen if they'll be ranked next week. Oswego is probably sittting right behind Ithaca and they do have a win against the Bombers. The Lakers could move into the rankings if Ithaca should falter and Oswego wins their final 2 games.

The committee doesn't consider games taking place this week. The rankings for this week are based on games through Sunday, Feb. 10th.

Parker connects on big jumper at 1:20 to give him 16 pts on the night. S. McIntosh makes four free throws in the last 0:32 and C. Manning also steps to the stripe during that span and connects. CSt's Smith with clutch triple at 0:24.

Thanks for the updates dex. I missed everything tonight as I was crashed from my meds and the fever I've been running. Fell asleep around 6 M as I was trying to get ready and make my escape from my wife who was bound and determined to keep me home.

Just got a score from Buffalo State. It's 84-80 Brockport, with 1:10 to go in overtime.

magicman

Didn't hear the final score but do know that Brockport won in overtime against Buff State.  Now it's posted 92-84 is the final.

thebear

Magic, as I see the tea leaves, Cards worst loss is to Buff State, while Dragons worst loss is to NP, I believe tie breaker goes to Dragons for home court.

So it really doesn't matter, Dragons will host the finals.

Good luck tomorrow.  Hope you can contain Gilkes and Ward.

Yep. Our season is over (officially tommorrow after Geneseo game). I would have rather got crushed than lose the way we did tonite. The headline on Buff State website reads as follows..."Brockport Rips Victory From Men's Basketball In Overtime". ("rips" my heart out would have put it better) >:(

1st line of story....."Buffalo State let a 10 point lead with less than 3 minutes to play slip away, and visiting Brockport escaped with a 92-84 victory tonight, eliminating the BENGALS from SUNYAC playoff contention" :-[

Not much else to add! :'(

Congrats to Brockport on their victory and to New Paltz for making the playoffs after a very slow start this season!

Go BENGALS!

Bear,

Despite his condition, Magic was aware of the postseason scenario, though it certainly did not hurry his recovery. Scroll above to his late Tuesday night's posting ....... as in Cortland would host no matter what happened this weekend. Still, Friday night's outcome brought a smile to his aching face, we're sure.  Now, as for putting a grin on the Bear .........we shall see later today.

All that said, Plattsburgh put together a fine piece of work on Friday. Had to cause the Corts did not roll over by any means. Two strong showings. And the suspense  .......ah, the suspense. We would have liked to have seen the last few minutes, but Pburgh video went dark on us. Then live stats went on the blink. Had to rely on the student audio for the closing second (and listening to that, well, only created a bit more of what the %^&%$^!). Twas excitement personified in the north country.
