Brockport's State John Ivy has been selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Week. Here's the write up from the YAC website:

"John Ivy scored a career-high 35 points in a 92-84 overtime victory over Buffalo State on Friday to secure a playoff berth. Ivy scored his second straight 30-point game and fourth of the season with 31 against Fredonia and moved into 15th on the all-time scoring list at Brockport. He shot 46.3 percent in the two games while grabbing four steals in each contest. Ivy has scored at least 20 points in 11 straight games and is averaging 25.3 points per game over that stretch."

Congratulations to John on a fine career at Brockport. Barring an ECAC game he has played his final game for the Golden Eagles. I'm sure his selection to an upcoming SUNYAC All Conference team is just a formality.

SUNYAC semifinals start tonight at 6:00 PM

Game #1

#3 Geneseo State vs #2 Plattsburgh State  This will be broadcast by Cortland Internet Radio with Bobby Comstock doing his excellent radio commentary. Always a pleasure to listen to. Their will also be live stats up a.nd running. Here's the links to the Cortland radio and live stats: http://www.cortlandreddragons.com/index.aspx?tab=basketball&path=mbball

Plattsburgh and Geneseo have both won at home and now comes the rubber match on a neutral court to settle things for the year. Geneseo won at home by 2 points 66-64 back in January. Plattsburgh won 84-62, 2 weeks ago in the Burgh. Some things have changed considerably since that one sided defeat. Geneseo was missing point guard Thomas Decker in that game and he has now returned to the lineup and appears to be at nearly full strength as he started and scored 15 points on Tuesday night in the win over New Paltz. he logged 19 minutes of court time in that contest. Plattsburgh, on the other hand has lost their leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer, John Perez who went down against Potsdam with a fractured tibia. While it's hard  to replace a player of Perez's caliber the strength of this Plattsburgh State team all year has been it's depth with so many different contributors capable of stepping up and leading the team in scoring or rebounding. Big Man Reggie Williams has stepped into the starting lineup in place of Perez and has come up with back to back games with double figures as he's averaging 10 ppg, 6 rpg and 3 blocks per game. Kalik Parker came off the bench against Cortland and led the team with 16 points (6x10 fg, 4x8 3's) and 6 rebounds. 5 other players all had double figures and point guard Chris Manning nearly had a triple double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 9 assists and 4 steals. I f this guy doesn't make All Conference then the voters have got their priorities mixed up because he just beats you in so many different ways. He leads the nation in steals with 102 for a 4.08 per game average. he's also 13th in the nation in assists with 152 for a 6.08 per game average. He's not a big scorer but has had double figures on 8 different occasions and averages 6.6 ppg  and pulls down 4.4 rpg. He is so quick that in a matter of minutes he can change a game and has done so in numerous games. He backcourt mate Shamoy McIntosh is no slouch when it comes to turning up the heat on defense and Jordan Moody is also a quick and athletic defender. I think the depth that the Cardinals bring to the table will overcome the loss of their star player, Perez. I see this game as a much closer contest than the one that took place two weeks ago but I think the Cards will come away with a 77-71 victory here.

Plattsburgh with a 4th place ranking in the latest East Regional Rankings has put themselves in a decent position to gain a Pool C bid even if they lose the SUNYAC Tournament. I believe they need to win tonight however and make it to the final game against Cortland. Even if we lose that game I think we gain one of the 19 Pool C bids out there. I remember several years ago when Hamilton was in good shape for a Pool C bid if they didn't win the Liberty League. They lost in the semifinals however instead of the finals and were left on the outside looking in. Had they won that semifinal game they were a lock to go dancing. i think Plattsburgh may be in that same position this year. We need to win tonight and we should be okay. Here's hoping the guys share the rock, look for the open man, take good shot selections, build a lead, play smart wtih the lead, and if the lead is manageable near the end that we use some clock and shorten the game. Go Cards!!!!

Game #2

#4 Oswego State vs #1 Cortland State

Hard to believe that the Red Dragons can run roughshod over the Lakers like they did 2 weeks ago. I certainly don't foresee that happening again but I do see a Cortland victory on the horizon. This year is payback to Oswego for the past couple of years that the Burridge led Lakers had their way with the Dragons. Three times Oswego beat Cortland last year. The first game was a down to the wire barnburner won by the Lakers 69-67. The 2nd game was a blowout won by the Lakers in Cortland 84-65 and the 3rd game was in the championship of the YAC tournament that was a much closer decision when the Lakers pulled away from a 53-50 lead in the final 3 minutes to win by a 66-57 final.

Can you say deja vu?
This year the Red Dragons won a down to the wire barnburner in Oswego 75-69 that was a 1 possession game with under 20 seconds to go. Then Cortland blitzed the Lakers in Cortland 2 weeks ago worse than Oswego beat them in game 2 last year as they won by a 78-46 score. Now comes the YAC Tournament and game #3. I see this being a repeat of last years final with Oswego hanging with the Dragons but in the end Winter, Manning, Smith, McMahon, Sternkopf and Hefele will prevail. I think this one will end up 74-67 and hope the Dragons will meet my Cards in the final tomorrow night.

I missed last week's matchup with Cortland against my Cardinals as I was not too healthy at the time. It was the one game I was looking forward to all year long and I missed it completely. I'm hopeful I'll get a chance at a rematch tomorrow if the basketball gods are smiling on me tonight. I'm rooting for the Red Dragons here because to be the best you have to beat the best and this year at least so far the boys from Cortland have been the best. So go Red Dragons!!! Hope to see you tomorrow afternoon, live on the D3 hoops video broadcast.

Plattsburgh leads 65 to 55 with 3:27 left in the game. Cards need to use some clock on each possession now and play smart.

Plattsburgh now in control with a 71-59 lead with 49 seconds left.

Final Score Plattsburgh State 77 Geneseo State 67.   Way to go Cardinals. I predicted a final score of Plattsburgh 77 Geneseo 71 so I was pretty darn close to hitting that one right on the money.  Some details on the game to follow. Just need Cortland to take care of business next game and I'll get my wish of a Plattsburgh-Cortland rubber match. Wish it was in Plattsburgh though.

magicman

Cortland State leads Oswego State 29-28 at the half.

Jesse Winter leads the Red Dragons with 10 points, brian manning with 9.

Sean Michele with 8 and Hayden Ward with 7 lead the Lakers.
