Didn't get a chance to do all the SUNYAC picks today. Up late last night and slept in today since it was my birthday. I do hope for a birthday present from my Cardinals though in the form of a win over Bridgewater State in a game that tips off in about 25 minutes.
I think the Cardinals win give me that present with an 86-75 over the Bears.

I'm also hoping that the Buffalo State Bengals remember my birthday and gift wrap a nice 81-77 win over the Cardinals that I'd like them to beat and that's the St John Fisher variety.  Fisher is favored in this contest and it's tough to play them at home at come out of there with a W but I have faith in the Bengals to pull this off tonight.

If Oneonta could somehow come away with the championship of the Rochester Tournament that would be icing on my cake. The Tufts Jumbos will be a challenge for the Red Dragons for sure and the point spread has Oneonta losing by 11. I can't pick the Red Dragons to win here but I hope Zach Mager and Company has another upset in mind. I think it might be a 78-71 final in favor of the Jumbos. Hope I'm wrong.

New Paltz just might make it back to the East Coast with a 2-0 record. Redlands not too happy though as they got pounded last night 98-78 by George Fox College. Odds makers favor the Bulldogs to beat New Paltz by a 10 point margin. Hope the Hawks win this tournament but I see them dropping this game to the host team 84-78.

SUNYAC unbeaten streak ends as Potsdam can't hold onto thier 2nd half lead and falls to Farmingdale State by a 71-63 final. I didn't get a chance to predict this game but I did tell  thebear in an email early this morning that I thought Potsdam was in trouble today against Farmingdale. Was hoping I was wrong but after that showing the Bears had yesterday against Canton and the fact that Farmingdale beat Clarkson on Friday didn't bode well for Potsdam. :(

Plattsburgh State not looking very good in the opening 10 minutes of play against Bridgewater State. The Cardinals couldn't hit the proverbial  broad side of a barn. The Cards miss their first 15 shots from the field and never got a basket until Chris Manning had a steal and a layup at the 11:09 mark of the 1st half. That made the score 12-7 and the Cardinals after looking at a 12-3 deficit finally got their act together. Still a lot of turnovers early on and some defensive lapses that led to several easy inside buckets by the Bears. Coach Curle with some appropriate time outs to right the ship. Shavar Fields came off the bench to give the Cardinals a big boost as he finished the half with 10 points and 4 rebounds to enable Plattsburgh to come back and take a 28-25 lead into the break. Jordan Moody and Manning with 6 points each. Cards need to play better and most importantly shoot better in the 2nd period to put this one in the win column.

Plattsburgh State defeats Bridgewater State 78-70 I believe although at one point I saw a 79-70 score on the scoreboard. Live Stats by sidearm sports as jdex mentioned earlier sure do suck. Cards had 4 in double figures, led by Shavar Fields who came off the bench and tossed in17 points while grabbing 8 boards. Shavar was a difference maker today. Nice to see that kind of effort all over the floor from the big guy. Shamoy McIntosh after a slow 1st half (only 1 point) ended up with 15 points and 7 rebounds. John Perez made his return to the hardwood 9 months after a broken leg with another typical John Perez game...10 points, 10 rebounds 4 steals and 3 assists, just another ho hum double double. Welcome back John!!! 8-). Jordan Moody also hit double digits with 12 pts, 3 reb, and 3 assists. Chris "the Flash" Manning scored 6 points had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and oh yeah,  7 steals , taking right up where he left off at the end of last year, leading the nation in steals. I would be willing to wager that he'll repeat that feat again this year. Ed Correa also came off the bench and shot 50% (4x8) to total 9 points, while newcomer Xavier Thomas made his Cardinal debut a success with a 7 point, 5 rebound effort, in only 11 minutes of floor time.

Cards never fell behind in the second half. They led early on in the 2nd by 2 to 6 points until the Bears finally caught them at 39, with 13 minutes to play. Plattsburgh took over from that point on however as they went on a 21-7 run over the next 6:30 toopen up a 14 point lead at 60-46. Shamoy McIntosh started it with a 3 pointer followed by another 3 from Ed Correa (the only 2 we had) and then John Perez made back to back inside moves to give the Cards a 6 point edge. The rest of the team got in on the act and the Cardinals increased their advantage to 72-55 with 3 minutes left in the game. That 17 point lead was the largest in the game.

Cards won the rebounding battle 40-30 and hard to believe, after opening with an 0-15  start from the field the Cardinals actually outshot the Bears 48.4% to 46.0%. Plattsburgh shot 31x64 from the field but over the last 31 minutes of the game shot 31 for 49 or a 63.3% clip to turn things around. The Bears were 23x50 from the field but hit 7 of 20 from downtown. As mentioned, the Cards only made 2 triples in 16 attempts. Not a good night from long distance. Might have been the way that court is so wide open at each end. Cards not used to that kind of look. Hope they shhot better tomorrow against the host team, Richard Stockton or we'll be headed home with a 1-1 record.

I'm happy though I got my Birthday Present. ;) Hope the Bengals, the Hawks and the boys from Oneonta decide to pile on. 8-)

Just got another birthday present as I checked the box score from the Bowdoin-Salem State women's game. My favorite woman's hoop player is Coach Curle's daughter, Marle Curle and in her second ever collegiate game she led the Bowdoin Polar Bears to an 81-49 win over the host Vikings to win the Salem State Tip Off Tournament. Marle scored 19 points, had 6 rebounds and 3 assists in 26 minutes of floor time. She was chosen tournament MVP. Great start to her young hoops career.

Just got a phone call that gave me another birthday present. The Bengals have defeated St. John Fisher. I didn't get a final but it was 60 something to 50 something and was around a 9 point margin. Good job Buff State.

Follow up phone call giving me specifics of the Buffalo State game. Also the box score is now available on the Buffalo State website.

Final score was 67-59 and the Bengal were led by Rod Epps with 15 pts and 8 rebounds. Justin Mitchell was next with 12 pts and 5 boards. Brad Doyley added 10 pts and 5 rebounds. Freshman Jordan Glover gets the start in his first game as a Bengal and scores 9 pts, with a couple of assists. Jordan was 3x4 from the field and his 3 fg's were all from downtown.  Bengals showing some depth as 9 guys played double digit minutes and 13 players saw action while 12 of them broke into the scoring column.

Fisher was led by Freshman Keegan Ryan as the big guy had a double double in his first collegiate game. He had 16 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Saw Keegan play at Beekmantown Central School which is in my community. He'll keep getting better year after year.  No one else for Fisher was in double figs.

Bengals were outrebounded by a couple 39-37, but only had only 9 turnovers to 17 for the Cardinals. Bengals shooting % was a little better from the field and they had 4 three pointers in only 12 attempts while Fisher had 4 3's in 19 attempts.

Good first game for the Bengals. Next up is a game against Medaille, on Tuesday 11-19, in the Mavericks, Sullivan Center. Medaille lost a nail biter today against Cortland and is in for another tough night on Tuesday I think.

Some updates on other Conference teams:

Oneonta lost to Tufts 96-78.  The Jumbos took control of the game midway through the first half with a 22-10 burst that gave them a 31-16 lead that grew to a 20 point edge at the break, 47-27. The lead for the entire 2nd half stayed between 20 to 25 points with the largest grew to 84-57 with 8 minutes left to play. Zach Mager once again led the Red Dragons with 21 pts and 4 rebounds. Jackson Zuvic had 13 pts along with 6 rebounds and Jack Dignan dropped In 12 pts.  No sign of junior point guard former YAC Rookie of the Year (2012) Frankie Kelly in either game this weekend. Hope is, that if it's an injury, it's a minor one.

Oneonta will next host Hamilton on Tuesday the 19th.

Oswego State lost to Neuman 69-58. Daniel Ross  led the Lakers with 28 pts and 10 rebounds. Freshman Brian Sortino had his 1st double figure game as a Laker with 11 pts.

The Lakers will host Ithaca on  Tuesday Nov. 19th

Fredonia State dropped a one sided affair against Nazareth in  the Championship game of the Golden Flyers Tournament. Fredonia hung with  them through the 1st half and they were only down 39-32 at the break. Nazareth outscored the Blue Devils 53-30 in the 2nd period to coast to the win. Tyrone Clark led Fredonia with 20 pts and  Robert Lyles added 10.

Fredonia will travel to Penn State-Behrend on Wed the 20th.

New Paltz defeats Redands  82-60 to win the Bulldogs'  Tip Off Tournament. The Hawks built a 49-26 halftime lead and coasted to the win from that point. Andrew Seniuk came off the bench to lead the Hawks with 17 points. Taylor Sowah added 16 and Andrew Joseph had 14. Nice to see the Hawks come back east with a 2-0 record. Probably the biggest surprise of opening weekend in the SUNYAC.

New Paltz will be in action again when they host Vassar College on Thursday 11-21.

YAC teams went 4-4 today after our 5-0 start yesterday. 9-4 on opening weekend so far. My Cardinals have a chance to put us in double figures if they can knock off host Richard Stockton tomorrow at 1:00 PM.

Weekend high points in magicman order:

1. New Paltz going 2-0 on their West Coast trip as they defeat Whittier College and Redlands. Never easy to cross the country and win both games against teams in the SCIAC conference. Redlands was an NCAA participant last year and won both the regular season and tournament championship in the conference. Whittier finished in 3rd place in the conference. Great job by the Hawks to help our SOS.

2. Oneonta's big win over Rochester Friday on the Yellowjackets home court. Red Dragons made the win look rather routine as they led early by a large amount. Plattsburgh went down their 2 years ago and we know how tough trying to come out of there with a win can be.

3. Buffalo State knocking off preseason conference favorite St. John Fisher Saturday evening on the Cardinals home court. That will certainly help the Bengals SOS and the conference as well.

4. Cortland winning a tight one on the road at Medaille 61-59. The Mavericks may not play in the toughest of conferences but they have averaged 21 wins and 7 losses over the past 5 years and have been to the NCAA tournament in 3 of those years and in post season play the other 2 years as well. They have plenty of wins against teams from the tougher East Region conferences. Fortunately this year it won't be Cortland but the Mavericks will look for a measure of revenge as they face Buff State, St. John Fisher and Geneseo  in their next 3 games.

5. Plattsburgh State beating Bridgewater State after playing so poorly for the 1st half of the 1st half. Shooting 0 for 15 is not how you want to start out in the initial game of the season. Credit the coach who took a time out and steadied his team, telling them that the other coach was telling his team how quickly Plattsburgh State was going to turn around that 9 point deficit. The Cardinals then went back on the court and did just that.

6. Fredonia coming back from 12 points down with under 7 minutes left to play against Union and outscoring the Dutchmen by a 29-8 margin in the final 6:28 and win by a score of 98-89.

Was impressed with Fredonia this weekend... they are way ahead of schedule. they have a good point guard and 2 good wing players. I think they could be a 7th place team in this league. Oneonta clearly has players after the win against the U of R. This is a league with lot of quality teams. Great 1st weekend!

Plattsburgh State getting set to tip off against host Richard Stockton in a few minutes. Game time is 1:00 PM. Point spread favors the Jersey Boys by 4 points but I'm hoping my Cardinals come away with the 4 point win, 77-73.  Cards certainly can't start the game as bad as they did yesterday. Lets make it a pleasant trip back home to the North Country. Go Cards.

Great video from Richard Stockton. TV quality. Sounds sucks but...Go CARDS  Yac could finish 10-4 on their first weekend!

Actually sound is decent. I had the sound on my computer down to 14% :-[

Plattsburgh State trails Richard Stockton 39-37 at the half.  Cardinals getting the short end of the whistles. 1 key play was a 3 pointer by Cards Ed Correa, that was disallowed because an offensive foul was called against Shamoy McIntosh who passed the ball to Correa right before he drained the triple. But for that call we'd have the lead. Zebras calling contact on us yet allowing Stockton players to hammer Chris Manning on one play and McIntosh on another with no whistle at all. Hope the calls even out in the 2nd period. A number of Cardinals with 2 or 3 fouls on them. Live stats stopped working with 5:19 left in the half so no accurate halftime totals. McIntosh has at least 14 points to lead the Cards. John Perez and Shavar Fields have 6 each. Perez with a bunch of rebounds at least 8 but could have more. Cards with too many turnovers in the half and too many missed layups as well. Should be leading this game by 6 to 8 points.

Stockton getting some good looks inside as the Cards with defensive lapses leaving people open. Ospreys do have some guys that love to take it to the hoop. In many ways they are a mirror image of Plattsburgh State. Ospreys big guy, Usuwa leads the team with at least 10 points.
