Cards lead 63-62 over Stockton with 5:53 left in the game.

Plattsburgh down 70-67 with 2:15 left in the game. Stockton just hit 2 big baskets a 3 pointer and a 2 point jumper to take the lead.

John Perez with an inside basket to cut the lead to 70-69 but Stockton comes right back with a basket to regain a 3 point edge. 1:22 left to play.

Stockton up 74-70 and the Cards press on an inbounds pass but the Ospreys break the press and get an easy basket. 76-70 and the Cards come down and throw up a 3 pointer that is an air ball. Stockton will inbounds the ball with 32 seconds to go and this game is over for the Cards.

Bengalsrule

Tuff 1 for the Cards. Questionable travel call on McIntosh with less than 2 left (he called timeout on his back but ref saw different).

Good video feed however the announcers never knew when they were on camera or off (couple of conversations overheard when announcers thought that they were off air).

Final score Richard Stockton 78 Plattsburgh 74.

I predicted a 77-73 final score but had the Cards on top. Tough loss for the team. We had 5 points taken away by the zebras that would have come in handy.

Shamoy McIntosh led the Cards with 24 points (6x14 fg, 4x9 3's, 7x7 ft) and was the game's high scorer. Shavar Fields once again came off the bench and had a big game with 18 pts, (5x10 fg, 8x10 ft) with 5 rebounds 3 assists and 2 blocks in 29 minutes.  John Perez with another double double of 12 points (5x8 fg, 2x3 ft) and a game high 14 rebounds. Point guard Chris Manning failed to break into the scoring column but played the entire 40 minutes since our backup point guard Mike Mitchell was out this weekend with a sore ankle I think. Chris did manage to put a lot of 5's on the board. He had 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. He had 5 turnovers as well but several of those I attributed to the refs and weren't the fault of Chris. Jordan Moody was just shy of double digits with 9 points on 4x7 from the field.

Cards had 35 rebounds to 39 for the Ospreys and we had too many turnovers with 19 to their 14. They shot the ball slightly better than the Cards did...27x62 for Stockton (43.5%) to 24x58 (41.4 %) for Plattsburgh. We were a bit better from long distance 7x24 (29.2%) to their 4x16 (25%). The Ospreys were 20x28 from the line (71.4%) while the Cardinals hit 19x24 (79.2%). This is a game the Cardinals should have won despite the officiating (which was not very consistent and favored the host team more than a little). We let it get away with some sloppy play and some defensive lapses that were costly at key moments in the game. In fairness to Stockton they did hit 2 big baskets at key moments with the shot clock winding down. The first was a 3 pointer by James Williams with 4:29 left to play. Shavar Fields had just tied the score at 65 with a pair of free throws at the 5:02 mark. Williams put up his 3 pointer with just 2 seconds left on the shot clock to regain the lead that the Ospreys would never give up. On the Cardinals next possession Shamoy McIntosh was fouled and he knocked down a pair  from the line to make it  68-67. Both teams missed opportunities on their next 2 possessions and then the Cards had a nice defensive stand end in frustration when Stockton's Jesse Hunt hit a jumper just as the shot clock was set to expire to make it 70-67 with 2:33 to go. Perez cut the lead back to a single point but Hunt came right back with another jumper. Down by 3 the Cards needed to score but came up empty on their next attempt. That led to a Cardinal foul and the Ospreys hit both free throws to make it a 2 possession game at 74-69 and that pretty much ended the Card's hopes.

Stockton was led Kevin Johnson with 16 points. Rameel Johnson (not related to Kevin) added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Plattsburgh State returns to action on Tuesday night 11-19 as they will host St. Lawrence at 8:00 PM in Memorial Hall.

SUNYAC record is 9-5 after the opening weekend.

NYHOOPS8

Plattsburgh and Buff State looked very impressive to me this past weekend. Some impressive results from SUNYAC teams as well. Looks to be a very good year for Upstate basketball this year.

Zach Mager captures the 1st SUNYAC Player of the Week award for his play in the University of Rochester Tournament this past weekend. No surprise there. Zach had 31 points against U of R as they won that game by a score of 95-80. He followed that up with a  21 point effort against Tufts in a game the Red Dragons lost. Nice start to his junior season.

Some other noteworthy opening weekend performances in no particular order:

Taylor Sowah leads New Paltz to a 2-0 west coast trip scoring 15 against Whittier and 16 against Redlands.

Robert Lyles helps Fredonia to a 1-1 weekend as he pours in 32 pts and grabs 8 boards in a win over Union. He also has double figures in his next game scoring 10 pts in a loss to Nazareth.

Daniel Ross  scored 21 pts as Oswego State gets a win against Lancaster Bible and 28 pts in a loss to Neuman College. He also posted 2 double doubles as he had 10 boards in each game.

Rod Epps led Buffalo State to a win over St John Fisher as he scored 15 pts and had 8 rebounds in the Bengals only action.

Kevin McMahon has 25 pts and 8 rebounds as Cortland defeats Medaille 61-59 in the Red Dragons only game over the weekend.

Last but certainly not least 3 performances by my Cardinals:

Shavar Fields scored 35 points (17 + 18) in 2 games, coming off the bench both times for Plattsburgh, in a 1-1 weekend down in New Jersey against Bridgewater State (a 78-70 win) and Richard Stockton (a 78-74 loss). He also had a total of 13 rebounds (8 + 5).

John Perez returned to the hardwood for his first 2 games since an injury last season in early February. John had a double double in both games as he had 10 pts and 10 rebounds against Bridgewater St, then scored 12 pts with 14 rebounds against Stockton.

Shamoy McIntosh, the Cards leading scorer from last season, continued where he left off, as he scored 15 points with 7 rebounds against Bridgewater St and came back the next afternoon with 24 pts to lead all scorers, against Richard Stockton.

Tonight's action:

Buffalo State  @    Medaille      6:00 PM  Live Stats and Video available   D3hoops shows this as a 7 PM start but both teams show it as
6 PM start on their websites.

The Bengals travel crosstown to take on the Medaille Mavericks in their 3rd meeting since the 2006-07 season. Buffalo State has won the 2 previous meeting and I think they will make it 3 in a row tonight. Mavericks do have a big guy, 6'8" Sean Bellomo that could prove to be a tough matchup for the Bengals, and they do return guard Jammal Coleman, who torched the Bengals for 25 points in last year's contest. The oddsmakers have made Medaille a 1 point favorite and they played Cortland tough on Saturday in a down to the wire thriller that saw the Red Dragons win 61-59.  However Rod Epps and Justin Mitchell will be too much for Medaille too handle. I think the Bengals will outrun these Mavericks and come away with an 81-72 win.

Ithaca  @  Oswego State     7:00 PM      Live Stats and Video available

This should be another tight contest between 2 teams that have faced each other for the past 3 years. The Bombers have been on the short end of the score for each of those contests. The Bombers lost a lot of talent from last year's team that made it to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament but the Lakers also graduated 3 starters including SUNYAC POY Hayden Ward. Oddsmakers have the Lakers favored by a slim 2 points but it wouldn't surprise me to see Ithaca finally get a win in this series. I hope the Lakers can win one for the conference. I'll go with them to prevail 68-65.

Elmira  @    Cortland State      8:00 PM      Live Stats and Video available

Elmira, the perennial doormat of the Empire 8 League, almost upset Cortland last year in Elmira on opening day of the season bowing to the eventual SUNYAC champs 63-60. They have lost their first 2 games of this season but only by a 6 point margin to last year's Sweet 16 team Morrisville State, 81-75. Their other loss was a 2 point setback to Drew University. The Red Dragons are not nearly the same team as last year's version and shouldn't take the Soaring Eagles lightly. The pointspread has Cortland favored by 21 but I'll be surprised if the Red Dragons win it that easily. I think they'll win but it'll be more like  75-67.

Hamilton  @    Oneonta State      8:00 PM   Live Stats and Video available

Hamilton and Oneonta should be another close game. THe pointspread has Oneonta favored by 4 points. I think a 74-70 Red Dragon final would be just about right.

St. Lawrence   @   Plattsburgh State  8:00 PM   Live Stats and Video available

Cardinals and Saints renew their North Country rivalry and the Saints are looking to turn around their recent fortunes against Plattsburgh. Cardinals have won the past 4 meetings and 5 of the last 6. Last year Plattsburgh won in Canton 84-68. Cards return most of that team, Saints return most of their squad as well. Pointspread favors the Cardinals by 11 and I can't argue with that. Plattsburgh could be tired from a long trip back from New Jersey that had them arriving home in late Sunday night. Cards also may be a bit shorthanded with some injuries. Still think they win by a margin of 86-74.

Oswego State up 64-34 at half.. Lakers shooting the lights out. Bombers can figure out how to play there matchup 3-2 zone

Cortland downs Elmira 63-51. Holds 28-16 margin at intermission as Elmirans scoreless for over five minutes against stifling RDragon defensive work. Corts hike lead to 17 in the final period before SEagles find some attacking zip and get within 56-48. CSt's L. Herron nets a free throw and hoop to halt guests' momentum. G. Spendjian off Cortland sideline for 18 pts, 8 rebs. Hits half of 12 from the field. TJ Hefele directs the offense and scores 11 pts with 3 assts before fouling out at 2:06. L. Herron with 11 pts, 3 assts; B. Estarfaa 11 pts(3x6 3s); K. McMahon 13 rebs, 7 pts(1x7fg). Elmiran N. Randolph 14 pts, 7 rebs. Dragons with just 5 turnovers, Elmira 15 but Eagles hold 43-33 board edge. Corts 2-0, Elmira 0-3

Tonight's Scores

Cortland defeats Elmira 63-51           Had the Red Dragons 75-67. Looks like both teams had off shooting nights as they combined
to go 34x99 from the field.

Buffalo State gets by a tough Medaille team 87-82 in a high scoring affair.   I had this 81-72  Bengals

Oswego dominates Ithaca as the Lakers cruise 99-73     I went with the Lakers 68-65.  Surprised by the outcome

Oneonta drops a tough 87-84 contest to Hamilton.   My only loss and from the looks of the play by play Oneonta let this one get away
                                                                            I had it 74-70 Oneonta

Plattsburgh defeats St. Lawrence 82-69.  Close to my prediction, which was a Cardinal win 86-74. It was the 60% free throw shooting
from both teams that did me in. Between them they missed 19 foul shots.

Went 4-1 with my picks only missing the Oneonta game

Plattsburgh State defeats St.Lawrence 82-69.

Big night for John Perez with his 3rd straight double double. John captured scoring honors with a game high19 points and was the leading rebounder as well, grabbing 14 boards. John did most of his damage in the 2nd half with 14 points and 9 rebounds after intermission. John was 6x12 from the field and 7x8 from the line in 26 minutes of floor time. Chris Manning had maybe his best offensive output as a Cardinal as he scored 16 points, on 5x7 shooting from the field and 3x5 from downtown. He had the dreaded 666 number also tonight. 6 rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 steals. Last game he was stuck on 555 for the same categories. Ed Correa started for the first time in a Cardinal uniform and had 13 points, 3 assists, 2 rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes. Ed was 5x11 from the field and 3x8 from behind the arc. Cardinals were 28x59 from the field (47.5%), 9x24 from downtown (37.5%) and 17x28 from the line (60.7%)
They lost the rebounding war 40-36 but SLU had 23 turnovers to only 15 for Plattsburgh.

St. Lawrence was led by Kyle Kobis and Brady Condlin who both connected for 15 points. Kobis had 6  boards and Condlin had 5. Kyle Edwards added 11 points, while Janpeter Brase just missed a double double with 11 rebounds and 8 points. Saints shot 25x60 (41.7%) 7x22 3's (31.8%) and 12x20 from the stripe (60%).

Saints fall to 1-2 and are back in action on Friday as they host Oswego State in their 2nd of 4 straight games against SUNYAC opponents. They host Brockport State on Saturday and end their sojourn into the YAC when they host Potsdam State on December 3rd. They played the same 4 teams last year and went 0-4. I think the best they do this year is 1-3.

Cards improve to 2-1 on the young season and will be off until December 3rd when they host Keene State from the Little East Conference.

Yes they did Magic 1 but that doesn't quite tell the tell.

The game and atmosphere was "Electric" in a Packed house. I haven't seen a crowd like this since the BENGALS clinched the SUNYACs at Brockport in 2011. If you have never been to Medaille's gym then picture 400 plus folks in a box of a gym where over 150 people are standing on a oval track directly above the court because there are no more seats available on the floor.

Picture a game which saw the lead change hands at least a dozen times over the first 30 mins (tied at the half too). With less than 9 mins left in the game and the BENGALS down 62-59 is the point that the game changed. The BENGALS scored the next 16 points in a row. The rest was history. The veterans showed real leadership today. Justin Mitchell played like.....Justin Mitchell (21 pts and 10 boards) Rod "Gets No Respect" Epps played like.......Rod "GNR" Epps (18 pts and 2 boards). I cant forget Brad Doyleys' 16pts and Maurice Miles 7 pts and 3 boards (including a game changing 3 pt play that gave the BENGALS a lead that they would never relinquish. ). Did I mention Chris "Caz" Castren who stood in for starting center , Chris Thompson (who couldn't attend the game tonite because of a family emergency), and played well enough to help hold 6' 8 behemoth Bellemo below his season average. Oh and I can't forget Freshman Johnathon Belton also started in place of  injured 2 guard Jordan Glover and added 4 pts and 4 boards. Add in newcomer-transfer Legree "Lex" Kirkland. All he did was get nearly a double-double with 14 pts and 8 boards. And he blocked 2 of Bellomo's shots. Heck I could also tell you of the contributions of Chris Boyd, Rey Jordan, Lovelle Smith and Jovohn Owens but then I would miss my bedtime ;D

1 helluva a game folks...1 Helluva game. I got in free because I know 1 of the coaches  (a friend of Magicmans) but that game was worth any price that Medaille charged to get in... Any! Heck if they had a tip jar at the entrance when I left, I would have stuck a 5 spot in it for good service.

A nail biter at St John Fisher on Saturday and now this 3 days later? ???  I better get some rest before Ohio Northern comes to town Friday for the BENGALS home opener.

What's the SUNYAC record now? 13-6? This conference is establishing 1 hell of a resume (if you ask me). Consider the following facts when deciding who gets multiple invites in Feb.......

Oswego beats "Sweet 16" Ithaca by 26??

Oneonta goes to NCAA 2nd round participant U of Rochester and hammers them by 15??

Plattsburgh goes into Richard Stockton (last year ranked and ECAC tourney finalist) and loses by 4 after a controversial travel call against the Cardinals while the player laid on his back calling timeout (1 ref wanted to give him the timeout and the other called travelling.. I watched the game.)

New Paltz goes out west and sweep 2? The 2nd victory being against the University of Redlands and yes they, Redlands, made the NCAAs last year also!

Potsdam gives 20 win Farmingdale all they can handle in their championship game this past weekend! Massey said that they should have lost by 29.

Did mention Buff State beating St John Fisher at St John Fisher? True no NCAA's last year for the Cards, but they were just voted the E 8 "most likely to succeed" a.k.a. Pre season favorite in the Empire 8 this year by their coaches and SID's.  The 'YAC is gonna be something special this year. I can feel it! ;)
