Even though its nice to see teams get some attention for the Massey Ratings. These Ratings are so inaccurate at this time of the season with only 2-4 games played. NCAA who picks the Bracket for the NCAA D3 Tournament DOESNT look at the Massey Ratings.

The NCAA at large selections are chosen based on the regional rankings. :o  We know that...as do most of the posters on this board, the E8 board, and the Liberty League board, we've been at this a lot longer than you have. ;) And you know for a fact, I'm sure, that none of the NCAA committee members ever take a peek at the Massey Ratings? Because I happen to know for a fact that members of the committee do look at the Massey ratings. It's another bit of information that's out there that helps sort out the D3 landscape. Obviously it's early in the year and the ratings have yet to get hashed out but the good thing about Mr. Massey's rankings is that every school gets listed, not just the Top 25 to 40 programs, and you can track the upward mobility (or downward movement) of your favorite D3 school and conference,  throughout the year regardless of how good or bad they are. I seem to remember that you were pretty excited when you first learned about the Massey rankings last year from some of my posts that were made at that time. ;D As I stated in my post of Nov. 20th I put the rankings of the East teams out there so we can see their movement as the season progresses.

Two games on tap for tonight: Had both games written up with team reviews but just lost my article as I tried to post it. Only predictions now.

Oswego State at St Lawrence

Saints have played the Lakers tough winning 2 of the past 3 games in this series and 5 of the last 7. Oddsmakers have the Lakers favored by 3 but I think the Saints, who return just about every one from last year's squad, will win a close one here 71-68. Hope I'm wrong and this score is reversed.

Ohio Northern at Buffalo State 8:00 PM

Bengals are hosting their Coles Classic Tournament this weekend and will face two teams from the Ohio Athletic Conference. Tonight they will take on the Polar Bears from Ohio Northern and tomorrow afternoon will face off against the John Carroll Blue Streaks.
The 4th team in the tournament is Johnson & Wales (RI) who will play the same two teams that the Bengals play.

Ohio Northern is coming off a mediocre season that ended with a 13-14 won lost record but the good news is they return 4 starters and 6 of the top 7 players in their rotation. They will be a tough out for the Bengals. Buffalo State also did not have ballyhooed new face Chris Thompson in the lineup last game against Medaille. I don't know if he returns tonight or not. The oddsmakers have made Buff State a slim 3 point favorite and I think this will come down to the wire as well. Hope the Bengals can keep that zero in their won-lost record but an Ohio Northern win here is highly possible. I'll stick with the big cats though and pick the Bengals to win this one 85-81.

Oswego State leads St. Lawrence 41-36 at the half.

Saints grabbed the early lead and held it by as much as 9 points at 19-10 with 11 minutes left in the period. They were still up by 8 at 25-17 with 8 minutes to go when the Lakers mounted a comeback and outscored the Saints with a 7-0 run to make it a 1 point affair. A Daniel Ross steal and resulting layup finally gave the Oswego its' first lead at 31-30 with 3:36 to go. Another basket and 2 Laker free throws boosted the lead to 5 and the Lakers maintained that advantage till the buzzer.

Mark Candelario leads the Lakers with 12 points on a perfect 6 for 6 from the field. Kyle Covley is next with 10 points, while Brian Sortino has 9 and Ross tossed in 8.

Brady Condlin leads the Saints with 13 on 5 for 7 shooting and Kyle Edwards has 10.

St. Lawrence has reversed an early 7 point 2nd half deficit and now lead the Lakers by a 68-62 score with 5 minutes left in the game.

Barnburner in Canton as the Saints and the Lakers are tied at 75 with 40 seconds left to play. Lakers with the ball coming out of an SLU timeout.

Lakers score with 1 second on the shot clock and 6 seconds left to play. Saints quickly come down and Saints Payton Stahler is fouled and injured going to the hoop with 2 seconds left.. Stahler is tended to and goes to the bench unable to shoot the free throws. Oswego's Coach Leone gets to choose the free throw shooter from the Saints team to replace Stahler at the line. He decides on Janpeter Brase who hasn't made one from the line tonight going 0 for 3. He makes the 1st attempt and Oswego calls a time out. After the TO Brase calmly steps up and makes the 2nd to send it to overtime.

Saints score 1st in the extra session and now lead 79-77. Lakers Alex Rawa is fouled and makes them both to tie the score with 2:48 to go.

SLU turned it over and Oswego missed a shot, got the rebound and Rawa hits a 3 pointer to put the Lakers up 82-79. Saints' Brase makes a layup to bring the them within a point but Brase commits a foul on the Laker possession and Brian Sortino puts Oswego up 84-81. Saints miss on a 3 point attempt with 1:16 to play and the Lakers come down use some clock. With the shot clock set to expire, Kyle Covely puts the dagger in the Saints heart, as he hits a 3 pointer with 41 seconds to go, boosting the score to 87-81. Saints miss and have to foul enabling Sortino to knock down 2 more free throws. After back to back SLU misses the Lakers Ross is fouled and makes 1 of 2 to make it 90-81. Saints get a 3 pointer as time runs out for the final of 90-84.

Buffalo State will need to rally against Ohio Northern as they trail the Polar Bears 68-57 with 9:29 left to play. Bengals were down at the half by those same 11 points 42-31. Even play so far in the 2nd but that won't get the job done. Let's GO Bengals.

Bengals still down 76-67 with 4 minutes to go.

Bengals cut it to a 4 point lead at 77-73 on 2 free throws by Brad Doyley. 1:41 left to go. Still time!!!

Doyley with a steal and is fouled with 47 seconds to go. He makes them both, only down 2 points.

Jordan Glover steals the inbounds pass, I think, and feeds Justin Mitchell for the tying layup. Tied at 77 with 44 seconds to go and a time out by the Polar Bears. Bengals run off 8 straight points in about 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Ohio Northern scores out of that time out on a layup with 20 seconds left to play to take a 79-77  lead. Bengals come down and work the ball for the tying or winning shot but come up empty with 4 seconds left and Ohio Northern grabs the rebound. Good effort coming back from 14 down, with under 10 minutes to go, by the Bengals. Tough one to lose. :(

Justin Mitchell, Rod Epps and Brad Doyley all had 17 points each for Buff State. Mitchell completed a double double with 10 rebounds as well, to lead the Bengals in that category. Legree Kirkland added 14 points off the bench. Overall these teams were fairly even. Bengals shot the ball a little better, but got outrebounded  41-28. 15 of those 41 rebounds by the Polar Bears are on the offensive end and resulted in too many 2nd chance points that ultimately decided this game. Polar Bears had 69 field goal attempts and made 33, eight of which were 3 pointers. Bengals only got 54 field goal attempts and made 29, with 5 triples.

Bengals will look to rebound tomorrow againt John Carroll at 4 PM.  Looks like another tough game.

The SUNYAC is now 15-9 versus non-conference opponents and we are currently ranked as the 6th strongest conference in D3 by Massey.

I'm almost positive Magicman that Dave Mchugh said on the boards last year that the NCAA doesn't look at the Massey ratings and if I'm not mistaken he said the NCAA makes there own regional ranking not based on Massey Ratings. I'm not trying to bad mouth you Magicman. I thought Dave said that during the season last year. I apologize if I mad you upset or anything

dcahill44

Magicman if you go to FAQ on the D3hoops.com page it tells you about the NCAA criteria and not once does it say anything about the Massey Ratings

Young Mr. Cahill:

I didn't say the NCAA as a committee  looks at the Massey Rankings. I said that I knew of NCAA committee members that look at the Massey Rankings... the same way I and others look at the rankings. They provide us with information and some kind of a system to make some comparisons. I don't always agree with the Massey Rankings but then I don't always agree with the NCAA's Regional Rankings or D3hoops Top 25 either.

I never stated that the NCAA uses the Massey Rankings to base the Regional Ranking on. I know they don't. They base the Regional Rankings on in region games against NCAA D3 opponents. (At least they did through last year) Massey bases his rating system on all games a team plays. In some instances he even uses exhibition games against DI and DII teams that take place before the actual D3 season begins. In past years the NCAA only used in region games to determine a teams regional ranking. That's is about to change this year.

I agree with you that the Massey Ratings can be inaccurate in many areas with only several games to imput into the system. I said that myself in an earlier post.

I didn't think you were trying to bad mouth me, I thought you were trying to bad mouth Ken Massey. ;D

And finally, I'm not upset either. I just thought it was funny that you were putting a statement out there about the Massey Ratings, in response to the postings of the Massey Rankings that I've been doing for the East Region teams. Nearly a year ago you had never heard of Mr Massey's rating system. I posted then, as I did this year, all the current rankings of the East Region teams. Your repsonse to that posting of last year can be found in... reply #4415 on January 6th 2013, which is the following quote:

"That is great stuff @magicman where do you find that stuff keep me updated with those ranking and strength of schedule for east region teams" from dcahill44

I was just trying to do what you asked me for....keeping you updated. ;)

I wasnt trying to bad mouth the Ratings... I think It does give us a general Idea on who the top 5-6-7. I learned more about the ratings over the summer and became aware of some of the innaccurate things about the ratings. I enjoy our chats on here magicman

Dcahill44.  A suggestion. There is a way for you to send a private message to anyone on these boards which will afford you the opportunity to get some clarifications on things that you might not quite understand yet.

As far as last night >:( >:( >:(. Momma said there would be days like this.  The worst half of defense that I have seen from a BENGALS team since the 1st half of thier season finale at Geneseo ( where they knew their playoffs chances were shot... No excuse but...). In the words of Charles Barkley our defense was " terable"!

Fortunately we have an opportunity to get some sort of redemption today s John Carroll ( same conference, different style).  I'm hoping for the best. Much rather see Hobart Tuesday with a 3-1 record.

Go BENGALS!

dcahill44

Bengals rule I thankd for the suggestion I watched Buff State play Fisher last weekend and was very impressed with the athleticism and quickness of the Bengals. I think they will definitely contend for a SUNYAC Title

4 games scheduled for today:

Brockport State at St. Lawrence    4:00 PM

The Saints haven't had much success against Brockport recently. The Golden Eagles have won the past 4 contests and 5 of the last 7 meetings. Saints come into this game with a 1-3 record and 2 of those losses have been to SUNYAC teams in the past 4 days. The point spread has Brockport favored by a 4 point margin. This will be the Golden Eagles first contest of the season so it's possible they might not be as sharp as they could be. Eagles could have some early season jitters, especially with their opening game on the road and SLU is looking to get some payback against the YAC, especially after the overtime loss last night to Oswego. I'm not buying any of that however. I think the Golden Eagles will be fresh and SLU a bit tired after yesterday's contest against the Lakers. I smell another Brockport win here by a 76-68 margin.

Delaware Valley at New Paltz State    4:00 PM

These 2 teams met last year and Delaware Valley won a close 74-72 decision over the Hawks. I  don't think the Aggies lost as much as New Paltz did from last years' squad. The oddsmakers have made the Aggies a slim 2 point favorite. They have averaged over 93 ppg in their 3 games so far and I think Del Valley will win this one by an 86-80 margin. Hope I'm wrong and the Hawks get back to their winning ways.

Potsdam State at Clarkson     4:00 PM

This series between the  crosstown rivals has been fairly one sided over the past 7 years as the Golden Knights hold an 8-3 advantage in the 11 matchups between them. The Bears did win the most recent contest however and are looking to make it 2 in a row with a win today for the first time in recent memory. The oddsmakers have made the Knights a 10 point favorite but I think the Bears might pull off the upset here by a 73-70 score.

John Carroll at Buffalo State   4:00 PM

The Bengals haven't played against John Carroll since Nov. 22nd 2008. They didn't fare very well in that contest as the Blue Streaks crushed the Bengals 89-56. Getting some conflicting information about the John Carroll team in regards to their personnel so I'm going to have to wing it on this pick. The oddsmakers have made John Carroll a slight 3 point favorite, but I'm hoping the Bengals want some revenge from that pasting they got 5 years ago and I don't think they want to lose at home on consecutive nights. I'll take the Bengals to squeak out a narrow 84-81 victory
