Updates:

Buffalo State losing to John Carroll 56-42 at the half.

John Carroll looking to have a significant size advantage over the Bengals. That was my concern when i was trying to find out about this team.Bengals already outrebounded by 12 boards at the break.  Maurice MIles leads Buff State with 14 points. Lovell Smith with a basket at the buzzer to end the half has 10.

The Blue Streaks getting contributions from 9 different players. Jake Holliger leads them with 13 pts. Simon Kucharewicz has 10 pts and 8 rebounds.

Potsdam leading Clarkson 27-23 at halftime.

Golden Knights led early but the Bears grabbed the lead at 9-8 and held onto it by as much as 5 points on several occasions. Knights caught them at 21 and went back in front 23-21 but the Bears ended the half with a 6-0 run to claim the lead at the break.

Rob Duquette accounting for a good portion of the Bears offense with 13 pts and 10 rebounds to have his double double already. like to see him get another one in the next 20 minutes. Zac Adams is next with 6 points.

Felix Abongo leads the Golden knights with 8 pts.

Brockport leads St Lawrence 47-35 at halftime.

Golden Eagles have their track shoes on as they are almost halfway to the century mark at the break. The first 13 minutes of this game was closely contested  as there were numerous lead changes and ties. The Golden Eagles were up 28-27 with 6:52 left in the period and ended the half with a 19-8 run to go into the break with the double digit lead.

John Ivy and Brandon Caruthers top the Eagles with 11 points each.

Brady Condlin leads SLU with 15. Kyle Kobis is next with 7.

Delaware Valley led New Paltz at the half by a 36-30 score. The Aggies are now up 69-50 with just under 7 minutes left in the game. Not looking good for the Hawks.

thebear

Duquette having a HUGE game for Potsdam with 19 pts, 17 rebounds .  Clarkson leads by 54-49 with 8 minutes left.  Potsdam individual game rebounding record is 27.

Two games on the schedule for today.

Fredonia State at Elmira      2:00 PM

Last year the Blue Devils beat Elmira 75-60. This year will be the 5th time the schools have met in the past 8 years. Elmira had their only win back in the fall of 2009. Since then Fredonia has owned the hardwood when these 2 teams have met. That may be about to change this afternoon. The Soaring Eagles return more talent than Fredonia does and while Elmira is only 1-3 they have been competitive in all their contests. The Blue Devils are 1-2 but both losses have been 30 point blowouts. Even the oddsmakers have Elmira as a 6 point favorite in this game. It's been a long time since Elmira was favored in a matchup with a team from the SUNYAC. I hope I'm wrong because a loss in this game will hurt the YAC's SOS but I think the Soaring Eagles will win a close one here by a 67-63 margin.

Oswego State at Hartwick  4:00 PM

This will be the first meeting between these two teams in recent memory.  Oswego (3-1), comes into the game fresh off an overtime win up at St. Lawrence and a manhandling of perennial E8 power Ithaca. Hartwick also has a pair of wins and a 1 point loss to undefeated (4-0) Messiah. The Hawks lost 7 or 8 guys from last years team. The good news is none of them were getting much playing time as the Hawks bring back the top 7 players in their rotation. And 2 of their starters this year didn't start last season. Now starting at center for the Hawks is 6'9" Matt Wilson who transferred to Hartwick from Franklin & Marshall College.  Not sure why several starters from last year have barely played this year, but Hartwick doesn't appear to lack talent. Oswego will have a struggle on their hands trying to win their 3rd in a row. The point spread has Hartwick favored by a slim 3 point margin. I think it will be close, but I also think that pre season 2nd team All American, Jared Suderley, and the new face, Wilson, might be too much for the Lakers to handle on the inside. I think the score might be something like 78-73 in favor of the Hawks. Hope the Lakers prove me wrong.

After the first week or so.... Brockport, Geneseo, Oswego have been impressive. Plattsburgh is very good. The bottom half of the league is stronger than usual with Fredonia, Oneonta, Potsdam. One of the most competitive leagues in the country this year especially. Along with the Empire 8.. Was very impressed with the way Coach Leone has beat some good team St Lawrence and Ithaca with such a young team so early in the season. shows what this team could do in the SUNYAC Tournment

Final score of Monday night's game.

Geneseo 76 Medaille 74

The Medaille Mavericks have probably had their fill of SUNYAC opponents. For the 3rd time in the past 10 days they have lost to a team from the YAC in a down to the wire nail biter. First it was Cortland on Nov 15th winning a 61-59 decision in the season opener for both teams at Medaille. Then the Buffalo State Bengals paid a visit 3 days later and walked out of the Sullivan Center with an 87-82 win. Then, in between the Bengals win and Monday night's win by Geneseo, St. John Fisher invaded the Mavericks' gym and came away with an 85-82 decision over the weekend. That leaves Medaille with an 0-4 record and I doubt that there is any team in the country that has lost their first four games, at home, by a combined total of 12 points. This should certainly prepare the Mavericks for conference play in the AMCC.

Last night's contest was another wild affair as the 2 teams went at each other the entire game. There were 9 lead changes and 5 ties just in the first half alone and the period ended with the Blue Knights up 36-34 on a Gordon Lyons jumper with 40 seconds before the buzzer went off. The biggest leads were early on when Medaille was up 7-2 and a bit later Geneseo was on top 15-9 with 14 minutes left in the half. From that point on the teams were never separated by more than 4 points as the lead went back and forth until the break.

The 2nd half had a script change however, as the Blue Knights came out on fire and opened the half with a 20-8 run to go on top 56-42 with, only 7 minutes gone by in the period.  Medaille, not to be outdone, went on a 15-0 spurt over the next 4:43, to regain the lead at 57-56 with 8:26 left in the game. That was the 1st lead change of the 2nd half. Nine more lead changes and 4 ties would follow until the game was over. The final 1:49 produced the following sequence. Geneseo scored to go up by 1, Medaille hit a 3 pointer to go up by 2 at the 1:21 mark.  Geneseo's Gordon Lyons hit a layup to tie the game at 72 with 56 ticks left. Medaille misses on their possession and Geneseo goes up 74-72 on 2 free throws by James McKenna, with 32 second to play. Mavericks get a basket by Jammal Coleman to tie it up with 17 seconds left, setting the stage for Gordon Lyons to supply the heroics, as he grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed jumper by Tom Decker, and put it in at the buzzer for the game winner, to make the final of 76-74.

I'm exhausted just doing the write up.  Lyons led Geneseo with 24 pts. and 9 rebounds. McKenna had 16 pts. and 6 boards off the bench. Jordan Jones had 13 points and Decker added 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

Medaille also had 3 players in double figures led by Coleman with 21, Robby Seyler with 14 and Erik Simmos with 10.

Blue Knights improve to 2-0 and will next be in action on Wednesday December 4th at 8:00 PM in the annual Wendy's Tournament. Their opponent will be announced at a later date after the seeding is determined.

I didn't get my prediction in for this game but I had Geneseo winning it by a 79-75 score. My logic was if Cortland beat them by 2 then Geneseo, a team that I picked to finish ahead of Cortland in the YAC would win by 4. The point spread favored Geneseo by 3.  ;)

If I don't ever see another team for Ohio then ill be alright. This past weekend was just horrible. I take some solace in knowing that John Carroll will be in the post season if they continue playing like they did Saturday

Tonight Hobart visits 1300 Elmwood. If we do t play better defense than Saturday then it's gonna hurt. If we can hold them under 60 then we should be good. We have yet to have 14 players dressed and ready to play in a game yet. Gonna be missing 2 tonight >:(

Gonna give it out best. Need a big game from our front court to have a chance

On another note....
Kudos to Magicman from the coaches at buffalo state   He contacted Massey who had not been getting our scores and had him update our record and ranking. Had been listed 0-0 when we were 2-0.
Thanks oh Magic 1

Ps here hoping that magic and minor surgery goes well today!!

Actually Mr. Massey didn't have you at 0-0 he had you at 0-2. Didn't miss your 2 losses just didn't have your 2 wins. ??? All is well now however.

Except the magicman is not well. :( Stayed up all night worrying about this surgery I had this morning. The Doc carved a hole in my face at 8:00 AM, then sewed it up with 20 stitches. As Bill Cosby once said Novocain doesn't kill pain, it just delays it. They gave me enough lidocaine  that my eyeball was numb, but now it's wearing off and the pain is coming. It takes its time, the pain, so it can build up a whole bunch of pain buddies. Then at about 2 PM all those pain buddies are gonna attack.   Already feels like I got hit by Mike Tyson, and I think it's going to get worse. It don't look to good when I look in a mirror either. I asked the Doc if I was going to have a scar and he said yes I would. I said I thought you were a plastic surgeon and fixed those things. He said it wouldn't be a big scar and it would hardly be noticeable. Plus he said my glasses sit right where the scar will be so they'll help cover it up. He also said I was only going to have a "few" stitches. I don't think of 20 as a few...more like a lot!! :o

New D3 hoops Top 25 Poll out today:

http://d3hoops.com/top25/men/2013-14/week1

No East Region teams made the Top 25. Hobart is the highest ranked East team as they get 22 points in the Others Receiving Votes category, which puts them in 36th place. Cortland State is close behind with 18 votes good for 38th place. Brockport State with their 1-0 record got a little support and checked in at #52 with 5 votes. NYU brings up the rear with a single vote.

Morrisville State drops from the #20 spot completely out of the rankings. Not really a surprise there as they didn't belong in the Top 25. Plattsburgh State and Ithaca who were tied for the 37th spot are also out  of the rankings. Plattsburgh is 2-1 with their loss coming to Richard Stockton in New Jersey by a 4 point margin. I think they will be back with a mention in the future. Ithaca has started the season out with 3 losses and 2 of them weren't good. They won't make another appearance.

Originally 6 games scheduled for Tuesday Nov. 26th

Winter storm warnings in New York may curtail some of tonight's action. Already the Utica at Cortland game scheduled for 6:00 PM has been postponed. No makeup date has been announced yet.

Fredonia State  at  D'Youville      6:00 PM

Blue Devils look to get back in the win column. If they can't do it in this game they may not win for the rest of the year. Point spread says Fredonia by 8, but just about everyone else has been beating up on the Spartans by 30 plus points. I think Fredonia wins this one 84-74.

Hobart   at  Buffalo State      7:00 PM

I'd feel a lot better about this game if the Bengals weren't missing 2 key players that are out with injuries. Last year the Bengals won at Hobart. I think last year's Hobart team was better than this year's team. The question is...is this year's Bengal team as good as last year's edition. The jury is still out on that. Oddsmakers have made the Statesmen a slim 2 point favorite. Can the Bengals lose 3 in a row at the Sports Arena? I think not...Bengals win 83-80.

Potsdam State      Skidmore      7:00 PM

I can't pick the Bears to beat anyone right now. Neither can the oddsmakers who have made the Thoroughbreds a 13 point favorite. The Bears should keep it closer than that and if they ever decided to play a full 40 minutes they could pull off the upset here. I don't think they will though as Skidmore wins this one 76-68. Hope I'm wrong.

Brockport State      SUNY-Purchase      7:00 PM

Top 25 poll calls SUNY-Purchase, Purchase State and has them getting 20 votes which puts them in 37th place. Brockport also in the ORV category but only getting 5 votes. Purchase is loaded with tall players as they start a 7'2" center plus a pair of 6'7" and 6'6" forwards in the front court. Pointspread favors the Panthers by 4 points. I'll go out on a limb here and take the Eagles with their defense and speed to win this one 78-75.

New Paltz State      Mount St. Mary      8:00 PM

The Hawks couldn't beat this team last year at home and I don't think they will have much luck taking them down on the road. The Knights return 4 starters, the Hawks lost 4 starters. Oddsmakers say the Mount wins by 5. I think it might be more... Mt. St.Mary's 77 New Paltz 71.

Bengalsrule

Glad to hear that all went well (- the 20 stitches) Magicman. Your Fredonia prediction is a lock. Nothing against 1 of our local teams but D'Youville is having a rough time in 2013! They have lost 4 games by an average of 31 plus per game! And Fredonia Coach - Phil Seymour returns home (Canisius College graduate and Turner Carroll HS coach) to Buffalo NY.

Getting ready to head to 1300 Elmwood (gotta get me a good seat  :) ) for the BENGALS vs. Hobart game tonight. Sure would make that Thanksgiving turkey taste better with a "W" tonite! ;)

Go BENGALS!!

This is ugly:   Fredonia losing to D'Youville 38-32 at halftime. :(
