However there is also a CCIW Pick Em League board on that same Midwest Region page. Just who do you think runs that CCIW Pick EM League? And would have some knowledge about those CCIW teams you are about to play? Your friendly, neighborhood, magicman, that's who. That's right, some guy over here in Plattsburgh N.Y. runs the Pick Em League of 8 teams located in Illinois and Wisconsin. Betcha didn't see that one coming my friend. ;D

You are right! Didnt see that 1 coming. I knew that you would know some of those guys over there. Just didnt know how involved you were with "pick em"!

Apologies to HAWKBALL :-[. I was typing fast. Hopefully by the time he comes back to visit these boards, he will miss this! ;)

SCHEDULE CHANGE:

Cortland vs. SUNYIT has been moved to Friday (tonight) at 6 p.m. at Cortland. Game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to Fran's post we now have 2 games to look forward to tonight:

SUNYIT at  Cortland State   6:00 PM     Game moved from Dec. 14

The Red Dragons look to get back on the winning track after dropping a nailbiter to Plattsburgh. The Wildcats come into the game with a 3-2 record and fresh off their own nailbiting 60-58 win over Keuka in which the Storm had 3 chances to tie or win the games in the last 35 seconds. The Wildcats escaped and are now looking to start a streak. They are also looking to break a streak of losses to Cortland, as the Red Dragons have won the last 2 in this series and 5 of the last 8 over the past 7 years. Oddsmakers have made Cortland a heavy 22 point favorite in this one though and I don't think the Wildcats will be able to keep up. I think the final will be something like 78-60 for the Red Dragons.

Cazenovia at  Oswego State 8:00 PM

Cazenovia at  Oswego State 8:00 PM

Both SUNYAC teams playing Wildcats tonight. The Lakers have owned this variety of Wildcats winning 6 straight over the past seven years and the smallest margin of victory was last year's 16 point, 73-57 Oswego win. The others were 25 to 54 point margins. The Lakers opened the season with a 62-50 win over Lancaster Bible. One week ago Lancaster Bible crushed Cazenovia 102-54. That doesn't bode well for these Wildcats. However Cazenovia did defeat a decent Medaille team (that has lost to Cortland State by 2, Buffalo State by 5, St. John Fisher by 3, and Geneseo State by 2) 88-80 back on November 30th. The oddsmakers weren't swayed by that result though and have made Oswego a 26 point favorite. I have to go along with that. I was impressed with Oswego last week when I got to see then play. I figured Daniel Ross and Kyle Covley would be the main offensive weapons, but their freshman guard, Brian Sortino, gives the Lakers another scoring option that helps offset the loss of so much firepower from last year's team. Sortino is making an early case for SUNYAC Rookie of the Year.  If the Lakers can put up 99 on Ithaca and 90 on St.Lawrence (OT) they should be able to score that much tonight. Lakers win 95-68.

And this is why you play the game.....Cortland 68  SUNYIT 68    at the end of regulation.

SUNYIT grabbed the lead in OT against Cortland and has held it all the way. Now with 1:21 to go, the Wildcats lead 77-75 and have the ball coming out of a timeout. Cortland with great defense gets the ball off a Wildcat miss and comes down and looks to tie the game up. Work it inside to Kevin McMahon who misses a layup, gets his own rebound and puts it back for the tie with 57 seconds to go.

SUNYIT comes down and with 32 seconds left Wildcats' Maverick Hodge is fouled by Lamard Herron. He makes them both to give the Wildcats a 2 point lead. Red Dragons come down and once again look to tie it up but turn the ball over with 18 seconds left as Hodge steals it. Time out Wildcats.

Red Dragons foul on the inbounds pass and Wildcats' Drake Alexander misses the first one. Cortland calls a time out with 16 seconds left.
Drake misses the 2nd free throw, but SUNYIT's Kaleel Johnson gets his 19th rebound off the miss and is fouled. He makes the 1st to give the Wildcats a 3 point lead and Cortland calls another time out. If Johnson makes his 2nd free throw this game is all but over.
Johnson makes the 2nd one.

Cortland races the length of the court and TJ Hefele is fouled with 9 seconds to play.Hefele makes both free throws to make it 81-79. Cortland calls another time out.

SUNYIT's Drake is fouled on the inbounds pass, goes to the line and calmly makes them both to once again make it a 2 possession game.  Cortlands McMahon throws the ball to halfcourt and zebras end up calling a flagrant foul on Cortland's Lamard Herron as there is a steal by the Wildcats after the long pass. Wildcats' Hodge is awarded 4 free throws and makes them all to extend the lead to 87-79. And that's the final. WOW!!

Not a good game by the Red Dragons as they gave this one away in the last few minutes of regulation. The rebound that the Wildcats got off their missed foul shot was huge (Johnson 19th rebound) If Cortland gets that rebound they could come down and tie it up. Instead they have to foul and the Wildcats extend the lead to 4 points and basically put them in the driver's seat for good.

magicman

Oswego leads Cazenovia 38-21 at the half. Daniel Ross and Brian Sortino both with 11 points to lead the Lakers.

magicman

Oswego defeats Cazenovia 79-49

Brian Sortino leads the Lakers with 19 points. Daniel Ross had 18 and Rashawn Powell added 10. Everyone on the Laker team saw plenty of action as it looks like Coach Leone did his best to keep the margin of victory within reason.

Two games today in the YAC:

St. John Fisher at Oneonta State  2:00 PM

St. John Fisher looks to get back to .500 in conference play. Whoops, wrong conference. Seriously though this will be the Cardinals 6th game of the season and is their 4th contest against a SUNYAC team. They are 1-2 against teams that should finish in the top half of the league. Today they take on a team that will struggle to make the SUNYAC playoffs. Both teams are coming off a win and hoping to start a streak. First time these schools have met in recent memory. Point spread has the Cardinals on top by 4. Oneonta defeated Rochester in Rochester by 15 points. Fisher beat Rochester last week in the Wendy's Classic, on a neutral court, by a 60-58 score. Both teams have lost to Buffalo State. Fisher is probably the stronger team here but I'm taking Oneonta in a mild upset, 76-73.

Alfred State at Fredonia  4:00 PM

Fredonia trying to beat a team from Happy Valley. Lost on their first go around against Alfred U. by a 100-90 score. Today I think they notch their 3rd and possibly final win of the 2013-14 season. Everybody is beating up on poor Alfred State as the Pioneers transition over to Division III. Oddsmakers have made the Blue Devils a 15 point favorite but that may not be enough. Blue Devils win this one 87-60.

magicman

St. John Fisher leads Oneonta 34-32 at the half.

Tyler Hart leads Fisher with 9 points. Keegan Ryan and Stefan Bock both have 8.

Jack Dignan tops Oneonta with 8, Zach Mager has 6 and Jackson Zuvic has 5.

Back and forth first period with Fisher claiming an early lead and maintaining it until the Red Dragons forged in front 12-11 on a bucket by Zuvic with 10:53 to go. Cardinals would regain the lead but then Oneonta moved out to a 5 point lead at 19-14 with 6:49 left. Fisher would tie it up again at 19 each with 5:13 remaining. A 10-3 burst by the Red Dragons gave them the biggest lead of the period at 29-22 with 3 minutes to play, but once again the Cardinals would catch up with a 10-3 run of their own. Two triples by Bock and two layups by Ryan accounted for the Cardinals' points and then Bock got another basket just before the half to give Fisher the edge at the break.

magicman

Oneonta defeats St John Fisher 67-65.

Red Dragons come through for me and post the mild upset. Zac Mager was the leading scorer in the game with 22 points. Jackson Zuvic had 12 points and led Oneonta with 7 rebounds. Mikey McElroy had 9 points and a huge 3 pointer with 1:55 left that gave the Red Dragons a 5 point lead that put them in control. Fisher did have a chance to tie or win the game as they rebounded a Red Dragon miss with 18 seconds left. After a Fisher timeout, they worked the ball for a three point attempt to win the game. Looks like it was partially blocked and Oneonta came away with the ball to end the game.

Fisher was led by freshman Keegan Ryan with a double double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Stefan Bock had 14 points and Tyler Hart had 11.

Oneonta improves to 3-4 and will be off for 2 weeks until they travel south for a 2 game road trip. They take on the Averett Cougars on December 30th at 7 PM.They will face off against the Greensboro Pride on January 1st at 2 PM and hopefully get the New Year off to a good start.

St. John Fisher falls to 3-3 and is back in action on Wednesday December 18th when they host the Bethany Bison from the Presidents Athletic Conference. The Cardinals will have their hands full with that matchup as the Bison are currently undefeated at 6-0 heading into a game tonight. Bethany owns a win over Ohio Northern who beat Buffalo State in Buffalo several weeks ago. They have also defeated Mount Union by a 79-61 score. Mount Union handled Hartwick  rather easily back on Nov. 30th by a 95-81 score.

Fredonia defeats Alfred State 79-65.

After an early Alfred lead the Blue Devils forged ahead at the 13:38 mark on a triple by Tyrone Clark to make it 13-10. They would extend that margin until it reached the largest lead of the period at 29-16 with 3:33 left to play. Alfred State wouldn't go away though, and came back with a little spurt of their own to close the lead down to a 7 point margin at the break 32-25.

The Pioneers got it down to a 2 point deficit on several occasions early in the 2nd half but couldn't quite come all the way back. Up by 2 at 37-35 the Blue Devils finally began to roll and steadily increased their advantage. A 14-2 run put them up 51-37 and they never looked back. The lead was never less than 10 and grew to a maximum of 17 before a 3 pointer by Alfred cut it to the final 14 point margin.

Tyrone Clark was the high scorer for Fredonia as he scored 26 points. Clark had a solid all around game as he grabbed 7 rebounds and had 5 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks.Robert Lyles had 18 points and 5 assists, John Kovac had 13 points and Alexander Grace added 10.

Alfred State had the game's high scorer as Tommy Hutson had 30 points. Adam Fezza had 14 and Tavon Moore finished with 11.

Fredonia improves to 3-6 and won't be in action again for nearly a month. Their next game isn't until January 10th when they travel  east to Oswego State and then Cortland on the 11th. Whoever made out the SUNYAC schedule didn't do the Blue Devils any favors. Those 2 games are the start of 5 straight conference road games and they all come against, what I think will be, 5 of the 6 teams that will make the conference tournament. I expect the Blue Devils will go from 3-6 to 3-11 by January 21st.

Buffalo State's Justin Mitchell completed the weekly triple crown by grabbing ECAC Player of the Week honors in the upstate region for the week ending December 8th. This award completed the trifecta to go with his SUNYAC Player of the Week honors and D3hoops Team of the Week honors. Justin was the 2nd straight SUNYAC player to win the ECAC weekly award as  Geneseo's Gordon Lyons was the winner of the initial ECAC Player of the Week award for the week ending December 1st.

Damn. Magicman, you beat me to that 1! >:( Hoops trifecta indeed.  I happened to see Justin yeaterday and extended your congrats to him. ;)

Mark my words. Rod Epps may soon join Justin in weekly honors. He as improved his defense(3 blocks last game) and is going to the basket the way Jake used to. The upcoming trip to Florida should give Buffalo State thier first look at a complete squad. I can't remember a BENGALS team that has had this many interchangeable parts.

Glad to see Oneonta defeat St John Fisher. Many posters in the E8 boards still predict them to win the conference.  I'm hoping that they run the table in E8. That has got to bode well for the Yac! ;)

Massey's updated rankings show the SUNYAC conference has moved up a few spots from 19th place to 14th place with a record of 28-22. Actually our record as of 12-15, is 30-23, but Massey doesn't have the results of 3 games yet. 4 of those wins will not count in our NCAA conference won-lost record as they were considered to be non-regional games. For NCAA purposes out record is 26-23.

Here are the top 15 East Region teams in Massey's Ratings as of today. The first number is the current Massey ranking out of 413 teams. The 2nd number is + or - the movement since I last posted these.  SUNYAC now holding down the 1st 4 places and 6 of the top 9 spots of teams from the East Region.

16  Brockport State       +4

43  Plattsburgh State     +6

50  Cortland State         +10  The Red Dragons will drop some as they have a loss that Massey doesn't show yet.

65  Oswego State          +18

76  NYU                        -14

82  Geneseo                 +19   Has a win not yet showing but it's Alfred State so it won't help much and could hurt since it will lower
                                            Geneseo's strength of schedule.

102 Hobart                    +16

103 Skidmore                 +7     Not sure why Hobart leaped over Skidmore since the last posting. Skidmore had a win over Ithaca and
Hobart was idle. Must be the SOS on past opponents got better for Hobart and worse for Skidmore.

114 Buffalo State            +24

122 Stevens Tech            +27

125 St. John Fisher          -9

139 Clarkson                   +8

144 Rochester                 +26    Yellowjackets finally get to .500 after their win over Hamilton the other night

148 Vassar                      +27

163 Nazareth
