Potsdam has certainly had it's hands full against Clarkson these past 2 weeks. However, this a very good Clarkson team. They are very well coached and run a very deliberate offense. For the 1st time in several years, they have an adequate bench. At 1 stretch last night they hit 7 consecutive 3's. Potsdam guards gave up 3-4 inches per man which partially contributed to the problem. Clarkson should make a run at the league title this year. Potsdam: I think you'll see them starting to rise....

Jose, I don't believe there is a preseason poll anymore in the SUNYAC. They went away with it a couple of years ago. I believe Dick Bihr complained when his team didn't live up to expectations after they won the SUNYAC tourney the year before. It could be a down year for the SUNYAC because some many of the teams lost quality players.

On another note, Potsdam loses again to Clarkson. What is going on with the Bears? Expectations were high and they've looked awful with their only win coming against Vermont School for the Blind. Is Reinhardt playing above his head or has he gotten a lot better since last year?

Could Brockport be back to it's old ways with pressure defense all around and going deep into the bench? Causing 29 turnovers brings the Eagles back to the days of Ricky Hollis and Mark Perry.

Big win for Oneonta against Cortland. I would assume expectation at Cortland are high again because of what they return. They don't have experienced size which I'm sure hurt them against Heslin.

cortland lost arguably their 3 best players.........

Is Mike Lewis from Central Square playing at Cortland? I know they were going after him pretty hard. The kid can play.

There's our boy.  +k to you CState.  I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait until next fall to spar with you some more.  I have been asking for some SUNYAC insight and been told it is pretty wide open.

Here is what I know:

-'Port is having early success with their pressure;
-Potsdam is underachieving a bit;

-Tell me what you know about Cortland.  They must play IC pretty soon.

I know that Cortland lost their 3 "best players" but they are Sportland. They should still be good every year. They have phys. ed. and can get players into school.  They have some very good shooters back along with Headley who is always a dangerous player. They also brought in a very good recruiting class led by Mike Lewis from Central Square who was recruiting by basically everyone in the SUNYAC.

Let's just put it this way, the SUNYAC should run through defending champion Plattsburgh. They lose Gibbs-Smith and gain more experience with their guards along with JUCO transfer Khylan Hunt.

Now onto Potsdam. Regardless of how much better Clarkson has gotten, which I'm sure is a lot, judging from the scores, Potsdam just shouldn't lose to them. As long as Dobbs as been around they have played tough hardnosed "D" which Clarkson wasn't able to handle. Are the Potsdam guards putting on that same pressure? I doubt it but Clarkson's guard play is average. They may be experienced but they are definitely average.

UCgrad45

SUNY IT could be a decent team this year. Reaves is excellent and they can score. Their D is suspect and they seem kind of small. But they do have some talent.

jdex

Slickyquick, we're going to hazard good guess that less than half of Sportland's roster are PE majors. That's been case in recent years. We'll get  roll call of the current outfit

SUNYIT at Cortland tonight in what should be interesting match. This is veteran Utica unit. And it did quite well last season. Kayoed Cortlands in tourney. Would expect nothing less than a contender, though Murphy's  moved on and Grimmer again holds reins. Reaves' court time limited on Tuesday because of ailing eye. Don't know immediate status

Joining SUNYIT at Cortland tonight for SUNYAC play: Bport at Pburgh, Gens at Pdam, Freds at NPaltz, BS at OnState
And Saturday has Gens at Pburgh, Bports at Pdams, UTech at OsState, Freds at OnSt.  Non-leaguer Corts hosting Alfred

sunit returns about everyone from a team that got to the conference championship game and they COULD be good? great statement

Jdex, what I was trying to say is that if you have phys. ed. and you can get players into school you should be good every year. Cortland and Brockport are in the same boat.  They should be good every single year in every single sport. Phys. Ed. attracts a lot of good athletes. Ask any of other SUNYAC school coaches and they would love to have something along the lines of Sports Management or Phys. Ed. I believe Fisher has a major called Sports and Society (at least they did a couple of years ago). It is a major draw for kids, they just want to be involved with sports.

Some schools also have special programs ("Special Talent") for kids with lesser scores to get into school. Places like Geneseo (I know they are good academically but they still have it), Cortland, Brockport, and I'm sure there are a couple of others. Keep in mind Buff St and SUNYIT can get anyone that breathes into school, so they are slightly at an advantage. Plattsburgh can get transfers in with lower GPAs then normal. Potsdam, I'm not sure about but they don't always seem to have the brightest bulbs of the bunch. Oneonta and Fredonia, I'm not too sure about but similar to Potsdam some of their guys might need a couple of hours to finish a one hour test.

It is amazing to see one SUNYAC school not being able to get a kid in while others have no problem with them. You would think that it would be on a level playing field on a year to year basis as far as the admissions process goes.

jdex

Wow, some pretty broad characterizations. Am sure Potsdam, Oneonta and Fredonia folks in particular would take issue. We know Cortland for the first time had  excess of 10,000 applicants for 2006-07. Admission selection gets quite selective. We know coaches have to fight tooth and nail for "their" kids. Favoring "Talent" is available in most areas -- academic as well as athletic, though coaches certainly take more advantage. And it  really doesn't take a lot of numbers to succeed in basketball, as opposed to football. A couple of "players" will make it work. All  SUNYAC schools do mighty fine in staying competitive. We see a real horse race this winter.

Also, on Saturday slate add Buff St. at NPaltz

And, yes, we believe Mike Lewis will be a Cortland factor in not too distant future. Apparently just has to adapt to TSpan's schemes, especially defensively. Believe me, coach is very particular. Lewis and fellow 6-6 Paul Oliver are frosh pair who will figure.

unbearable

Slickyquick,

I'm sure the two all-conference level players off Potsdam's Elite Eight squad who are in med school were given a few extra hours on their MCATs, too.

Darn that silly NCAA for giving out those post-graduate fellowships to exemplary student-atheletes.  Same with the Chancellor's awards.

Please explain "not the brightest bulbs in the bunch" to all of us.  I'm eagerly awaiting your response.

Ever consider that the focus, drive and determination that make one a successful athlete might also be able to be transferred to academic pursuits as well?
