Fredonia falls 66-57 in home opener vs. Pitt-Bradford. Tied at 41 PB goes on 11-0 string. Freds (1-5) in 32-29 arrears at half despite 12x25fg (finish 22x57). T. Alassari 15 pts(7x21fg), 5 rebs, 4 assts, 2 stls in 32'; K. Reichlmayr 14 pts(6x9fg), 6 rebs; A. Smith 12 pts(5x10fg); K. Saunders 10 pts. P-B fifth straight win

jdex

As we said, a horse race of pick 'em proportions ..... only one (conference) unbeaten, only two winless (including Cortland)

One SUNYAC tilt tonight: NPaltz at SUNYIT. Sorry, still prefer Utica Tech. At least that tells vicinity of the place!

Five others in pretty fair non-league hookups: StLarry at Pdam, Clarkson at Pburgh, IC at CState, OsState at Naz, Alfs at Gens

OnSt 3-0 (3-2), Bport 2-1 (5-1), Gen 2-1 (3-2), OsSt 1-1 (4-1), IT 1-1 (4-2), NP 1-1 (3-2), BS 1-1 (3-3), Pburgh 1-1 (3-3), Pdam 1-1 (2-4), CState 0-2 (3-2), Freds 0-3 (1-5)

Cortland takes step back with 67-61 home loss to Ithaca. Lethargic Red Dragons never get going (as in 23x63fg, 6x20 3s -- looked even worse). IC no ball of fire, but had enough -- 22x54fg, 4x18 3s. CState shortcomings inside very evident. Bombers' 6-5 fr Tom Brown (8 pts, 2 reb in 13'  provides spark along with 6-5 soph J. Bostic (12 pts, 7 reb, 3 blck), and 6-4 sr S. Stahn. S. Burton (12 pt),  B. Clemente and S. Leahy (10 pt) hit late ft's. IC up most of way, 33-32 at half and should have been more. Up as much as 11 late. CState back within handful, then stumble. Corts 9x19ft hurts since IC goes 19x26ft. IC 17 trnvrs (Burton 7, 5 assts) to Corts 9. B. Joe 11 pts, 6 rebs.  IC five in double figures -- 12, 12, 11, 11, 10. R. Headley 14 pts(5x13fg), 7 reb for CSt, D. Maggiacomo 14 pts(5x7fg, 4x6 3s); J. Miolan active off bench for 7 pts; C. Niehoff 10 pts(4x12fg), 6 reb

SUNYIT 87, New Paltz 85
Geneseo 67, Alfred 50
St. Lawrence 76, Potsdam 60

Potsdam loses to SLU by 16. I didn't watch the game but I noticed in the box score that leading scorer Tim Reinhardt didn't play at all. What is his status? Also, did any one else notice that 5'6" Scott Mitchell had 6 rebounds while 6'7" Brandon Siskavich had 2. Are you kidding me with that?

What a line Chris Reaves from SUNYIT posted. If he brought his "A" game every night he definitely be first time all league and possibly player of the year. He is basically a poor man's Allen Iverson.

qs -

Check the SU (very tall front line) - Oklahoma State (bunch o' runts) box re: What's up with that.  Rebounding is as much or more about position, desire, and hustle than height. Coming out of Peru, it seems clear that Siskavitch learned to reach over competition. You know that won't typically cut it at this level - but Siskavitch is far from alone in that regard.

Mitchell, a certified lunatic on the court, backs down to no one, consistently works hard, and does know how to board from the guard spot.

Interesting SU - Potsdam similarity: neither has an aggressive floor leader taking names for individual's poor performances  - particularly on the defensive end. Neither going far in their respective divisions without one.

jdex - nice work with your posts. They are appreciated.

Props and prayers to the bear. Looking forward to seeing your posts when you're able. You are missed.

Z,
What's up with `The Bear'? Always appreciated his insight, especially from north country

BBM

Yes, what is up with the Bear? He is most interesting. I feel that Potsdam really misses Ernst Ducina more than anyone realizes as he was an outstanding defensive player who consistently guarded the leading scorer on the opposition. His 45% or so 3 pt. shot didn't hurt either. I do think that Damon Brown can become a player just like him as he has the tools, just needs the heart. As for the discussion about the academic requirements being a "little loose" at Potsdam, let's just say this: yes while the Final 8 team of 2 years ago does have 2 young men in Med School, the Conference had 2 All-SUNYAC All-Stars rejected from Potsdam due to grades. Put these 2 guys on the team and maybe we're looking at the Final 4. Then again, maybe they would have been on academic ineligibility so much that the team chemistry would have been destoyed.

Cortland travels to Utica College tonight. Oneonta at Cazenovia.

CState coming off its worst showing. Doesn't get easier against E8 competition. Hosts RIT Dec. 15, draws Fisher in first round of York (Pa) tourney Dec. 29 and is home to RPI Jan. 6

slickyquick

Again, I know about the med school students and also the all-SUNYAC players that were rejected, I even know the names of those two student-athletes. What I am saying and what I will continue to say is that the reputation of Potsdam to the general public isn't super high. Their standards have increased a lot in the past of years.  A lot of adults think of Potsdam(the town) being full of bars.

I'm sure someone will give the average GPAs and SAT scores of each school in the conference to show me how great of a school Potsdam is.

I just want to see the GPAs and SAT scores of the guys that played for Jerry Welsh when they went to the NCAA finals 5 out of 7 years.  That might help me in my argument.

Help - I'm looking for the SUNYAC board and all I'm getting is the History Channel.

Conspiracy theorists, Bushkateers, and fans and alumni of every team that Welsh's Bears used and abused have been barking about this, that, and the other for well over 20 years.

The myth grows greater, claims of a Welsh-led cabal grow wilder, and fact further receeds into the past of those who were there.

Publish individual's GPAs and SATs from 1985? I'll get Marty McFly, Biff, and Doc on the case yesterday.

Seems that Welsh is to SUNYAC as Murphy will to the Liberty League if they're still comparing Tobin Anderson to "The Legend" in 2032.

I morn for the bits and bytes trapped in this black hole of hyperbole.

Friday NC slate has Potsdam and Oneonta attempting to get upright against visitors Alfred and Hartwick, respectively. Fredonia at this posting already in action vs. Houghton in opening round of tourney at RIT (vs. Hobart)

Saturday card takes New Paltz to John Jay and, in a good measuring stick,  Geneseo to Fisher. Also, SUNYIT at home to Utica in matinee rematch of earlier tourney test at UC (won by UC). And Potsdam is home to Ithaca at 4. Fredonia finishes up in RIT tourney
