Congrats to The Cards and Coach Curle for a fantastic season. Coach Curle is as classy a coach as I have ever seen during my travels in the SUNYAC. The Cards had a season  that at least 400 D3 basketball teams would give anything to have experienced this season, but didnt! There is a reason why Amherst is the defending Champs, and the pick of many to repeat.

Congrats to Magicman for representing our conference on these boards and across the nation and making all of us proud that that you are part of the SUNYAC! A big part.

Go Cards

Go 'YAC!!!

My friend from Buffalo is too kind and also one classy individual. Coach Curle and I both thank you for the compliments. 8-)

The SUNYAC had a great year and with a lot of talent returning I see another good year in 2014-15. Of course, I expect my Cardinals to be at or near the top once again, perhaps fighting it out with your Bengals. ;) Brockport will once again field a solid team and Geneseo has a good group of returning players as well. Cortland, Oneonta and Oswego all had young players last year and with a few new additions will be challenging the leaders once again.   Go YAC!

Magicman.....glad you are upbeat this morning. :)  In line with your expectation for next season....I agree with you about the Cardinals.  So much so that I feel that there is a good chance that our teams may well meet next season in the post season.  Why?  Another time when I see how Amherst's big in size, number and talent FY class come back for their sophmore season.  Along those lines, I like your Ezra Hodgson, the junior from New Hampshire.  I am wondering if he knows of Amherst's Connor Green also from New Hampshire.  I believe they are about the same age.
Connor spent a prep year elsewhere after HS.  Green was the Gatorade Player in NH before he went to prep school, I believe.  They would both have played the forward position in HS.
I saw an older person...wearing glasses....in several pictures of the Cardinal bench.  Curious about who he was, went to the website to find out.  All the assistant coaches for the Cardinals are much younger.  Any inside info on the man. :) :)  You see my background research has no bounds. 8-)

The gentleman in glasses that you spotted on the Cardinal bench is John Konowitz. John was the former head coach for New Paltz State from 1985-86 through 1988-89, who then moved on and became the head coach for Cortland State from 1989-90  through 1994-95. He has been retired from coaching for a few years and moved back to the Plattsburgh area recently. He wanted to help out and  became a volunteer assistant this year under Coach Curle. Unlike many schools Coach Curle does not have a large staff of assistant coaches. His only assistant coach is associate head coach, Cameron Conover, a former Division II player who has been with Coach Curle for nine years now.

Thanks for the info.  Cortland...heh...My daughter lives in between Cortland and Ithaca...in the town of Groton...rather the Village of Groton.  Last season, Middlebury had to go to the Cortland and beat the Red Dragons to advance to the Elite 8.  It is good to be useful.  Someone suggested a Walmart greeter for me to keep me out of trouble.  Do not qualify due to my personality...if truth be known.   Thanks again, my friend.  Hoping to make my plans to Salem after tonight.  First the Lord Jeffs have to win a game.

There was only one team that reached the Sweet 16, yet failed to have a member of their team named to an all region team. You guessed it....my Plattsburgh State Cardinals.  There were six teams that didn't reach the Sweet 16 that had 2 players named to an all region team.

Pat Coleman

It was tough when no Plattsburgh players were first team all-conference.

I understand the conundrum, yet we had twice as many all conference players as anyone else. I was hoping the fact that we got to the Sweet 16 may have moved one of our players higher up the food chain and in line for an all region placement. Can't argue much about the guys that did make the all region team...they were all good players. I wish the East region got 3 teams which would make it easier to reward players that are deserving. Many outstanding players are left off as it's hard to narrow down, when there are only 10 spots to fill. 39 teams x 5 starters is 195 players at a minimum that get whittled down to the lucky 10.

Pat Coleman

That's true but the ratio is there for a reason -- it would be inequitable to have three teams in the East and whittle 180 starters (Houghton, Alfred State, Canton not yet eligible) down to 15 at one spot for every 12 players, but then have a 56-team region whittle down to the same 15 at one spot for every 19.

It's meant to be a fairly exclusive club.

Is there discrimination against big guys on these teams?  As a guy from the NESCAC which is developing into a 'big guy' conference, I'm disappointed by the lack of guys over 6-6 on these teams.  Ironic, when you think of the recruiting focus of so many of the top teams.
Good work, magicman.

magicman

middhoops,

I think it's a combination of a couple of factors.

The biggest factor with so many of the choices is that a high scoring average is just about a prerequisite to receive one of these awards. The big men usually don't outscore the better guards in the conferences or regions. The big guys will usually have a 14-18 ppg average with a 7-11 rpg average and so many of these  guys aren't bigger than 6'6". I look at the guys in my region...Bonney and Suderley were both very good with great careers and hard not to put up for these awards. Then there was Gordon Lyons, Justin Mitchell, Kevin McMahon, John Perez and John Coleman, all guys that averaged a double double or very close too it and none bigger than 6'6".

The usual decision to spread the wealth around means that a conference like NESCAC will get Toomey, and with only 2 other spots available for the Northeast Region they will go to a guy like Watson (and usually his conference doesn't get an award) with his big scoring average and then they'll probably choose another player from either the NEWMAC or the Little East. This year it went to the LEC. Since the ballots for those awards didn't have to be in until after the first weekend of the NCAA, I think the fact that Albertus Magnus and Eastern Connecticut won games in the NCAA's and the 4 NEWMAC teams bombed out may have helped the two guys from those teams get the award. Toomey was going to be named to the first regardless.  So there go your three spots and there's no room for a Mayer or Swords or any other big guy in the region. (Something tells me that Robinson and George will make these teams possibly as soon as next year. Remember even your own Ryan Sharry was a junior before he made these teams.

The big guys in some of the power conferences like the NESCAC, or UAA or CCIW or WIAC are usually the ones that get the 6'8"  and up guys with talent, more so than the SUNYAC or conferences like them. They can recruit a D II or low level to midlevel D1 player easier than we can because of the education that they can offer. It's not often you see a 6'8" guy or bigger in the SUNYAC that's a member of a starting five. Brockport had a decent big man this year but even he didn't start.
