Well, it's up to the official source to provide official info on these things. It's not a fan-sourced production.

I think they should be ranked in the DIII hoops pre-season poll based on their finish last year and the returning talent but I won't be surprised if they're omitted.

I believe you'll be correct, but not because I didn't try. I made multiple attempts to get preseason information from Plattsburgh and was unsuccessful.

Wish I'd have known that Pat, I would have done my best to make it happen. The Cardinals should be better than they were last year. 16 players on a roster that is loaded with talent. I went to practice on Tuesday night after the Coach had made his cuts. Eleven returning lettermen, includes 5 players who have seen ample time as starters over the past several years. Two of those players missed all or most of last year but started the previous year and averaged double figures at that time. Four players on this year's team have averaged double figures either last year, the previous year or the last 2 years.  New faces include a DII transfer Kyle Richardson, who is a 6'5" forward and will push hard to crack the starting lineup as well. Tyler Coppin-Carter transfers in also and will provide help in the backcourt. Freshman shooting guard Tim Smith arrives from Australia and Freshman Zack Coleman is also expected to play an important role as the back-up point guard. The Cardinals could start any mix of 10 players and not miss a beat. Coming off back to back 20 win seasons, Plattsburgh will be looking to win the SUNYAC tournament after falling just short in the past 2 years. Their 25 game schedule only has them home for 10 games. They open the season November 15th against Elizabethtown at the Lycoming Tip Off Tournament and won't have a home game until December 5th.

Hmmm. Sounds like a top 20 pre season ranking to me!  Come on Pat. The 'Yac had 3 go to the dance last year and 2, Brockport (#22)and Plattsburgh (#24) finish in the top 25. Unless the rankings are already done (sounds like that may be the case) there has got to be a way to give the Cards a second look! Plus my beloved BENGALS would be  facing a ranked team on Jan 10th, just brings a little bit more - - - (fill in blank) to the game! ;)

Already done, and already posted on the front page of D3hoops.com when you made this last comment. :)

Ouch. #42  Plattsburgh??  :o  Oh well it is what it is! :(. I guess having Brockport and Geneseo also listed in the top 42 makes a decent statement for the 'Yac! At least Pat tried to get some info before these rankings were determined. Something tells me that next year someone in the north country will be sure that Pat Coleman gets a response sooner than later. Hopefully 3 'Yac schools get invited to the dance again this season (and not exactly these 3 schools  :) ).

Thanks for the heads up Pat!! ;)

The preseason poll has 3 teams from the SUNYAC which may be the 1st time that has ever happened. Too bad that D3hoops didn't get any requested info from Plattsburgh State. Knowing a fair amount about the teams in the Top 25, I really feel that Plattsburgh State belongs in the Top 16. MIT, a team that we beat handily in the NCAA's last year is ranked #16. Eastern Connecticut, another team we beat in the NCAA's is ranked 36th with 37 points to the Cardinals' 11 points. Plattsburgh has more returning talent than either of these teams. The Cardinals will just have to prove they are one of the Top 25 teams in the country as they did last year. Hopefully it won't take until the final poll this season. ;)

Something tells me that the "magic 1" does not like the preseason poll. It should be comforting to know that probably half ( or better ) of last years pre season teams didn't make the final poll. That's the 1 that counts the most!

Guess what day it is?  It's opening day of the season....sort of.  Plattsburgh State has an exhibition game at 5 PM this evening against Bishop's University out of Sherbrooke, Quebec. Bishop's will visit Memorial Hall to take on the Cardinals in what should prove to be a decent matchup.

Bishop's University is nicknamed the Gaiters and they have already played 5 exhibition games as they started back on October 3rd. While the Gaiters are 0-5 in those games they recently hosted WPI who is ranked #12 in the D3hoops Top 25  preseason poll. They lost to WPI by a score of 56-54. WPI was 22-5 last year and won the regular season NEWMAC title over Babson, Springfield College and MIT. They went to the NCAA tournament last year, as did the other 3 teams in the NEWMAC that finished behind them. WPI returns a ton of talent from last year and that was the reason for their lofty preseason ranking. Bishop's proved to be a good test as the Engineers were taken right down to the final buzzer.

Bishop's plays in a tough University Division conference in Canada and last year came in 2nd to the McGill University Redmen. McGill, by the way, defeated Division 1 Siena College 74-72 last fall in an exhibition as Siena went north to Canada for a 3 game excursion. In the past 4 years McGill has gone 4-5 in 9 games against D1 schools from the States.

Bishop's returns a number of starters from last year's team and they feature a 6'10" center, a 6'11" forward and a 6'9" forward. All 3 players are 5th year students so they're older than the seniors from the Cardinals. Interesting to note that the Gaiters lost that game to WPI, but their leading scorer and rebounder, Mike Andrews, the 6'10" center didn't play in that game. One of their top guards also missed that game.

This could be one of the best matchups of the season for the Cardinals despite the fact that it's an exhibition game. With only 10 home games this year for the Cards, I was willing to go and watch them play somebody's JV team to get my hoop fix. This is better than I could have hoped for. Now if we can only get a W.

Bengalsrule,

Meant to do a report a couple of days ago but other things got in the way. Heck of a game on Saturday Nov. 1st...probably one of the best I'll see in Memorial Hall all year long.  Bishop's was a very tall team, as I mentioned in my previous post and they started the 6'11" forward and the 6'9" forward. The 6'10" center, Mike Andrews, their leading scorer from last year, who missed the WPI game, was dressed and I thought he was going to play. Just before warm-ups I had a chance to talk to him and he said he was cleared to play but they were going to keep him out to be on the safe side. Their conference play started this week and they didn't want to take any chances. Their top 3 point shooter, who also missed the WPI game, Jona Bermillo, did play and was the games' leading scorer with 15 points, as he was 5x9 from long distance. Plattsburgh's leading scorer for the past 2 years has been Shamoy McIntosh. He also didn't play in the game as he had a minor injury and was held out for precautionary reasons.

The game got off to a good start for the Gaiters as they looked like they might be too much for the Cards to handle, but Plattsburgh soon found their rhythm and after falling behind 8-0 in the first 2 minutes of the game they finally got on the board and closed to with 13-9 with 12 minutes left in the half. The Cardinals then reeled off 10 straight points fueled by Ezra Hodgson's short jumper and 3 pointer in a little over 2 minutes to grab the lead 19-13 and they were never headed after that. Xavier Thomas had the first of his 3 dunks in the game to put the Cardinals up 21-16 and Plattsburgh's lead fluctuated between 3 and 6 points until the end of the half. The Cards took a 33-27 advantage into the break. Hodgson with 7 points, Mike Mitchell with 5 points and Alan Siergiej with 5 points and 5 rebounds in 5 minutrs of work led he Cardiunals in the first half. 8 players broke into the scoring column.

The 2nd half featured the scoring of X-Man Thomas and Kyle Richardson along with the inside work of Reggie Williams. Those 3 accounted for all the Cardinal points that led to a 51-37 14 point Cardinal lead after 9 minutes of play in the 2nd period. Up by 7 at 41-34, Williams got loose inside for a layup, Richardson nailed a 3 pointer, followed by another 3 pointer from Thomas. Eddie Correa then tried his hand at a triple but it bounced out and into the hands of Thomas, who, with a perfectly timed leap to the rim, grabbed and jammed the ball home in one move, bringing the Memorial Hall crowd to its feet. It was one of the best moves the old gym has ever seen. After Bishop's cut into the lead Richardson hit another 3 pointer to restore the edge to 14 at 54-40. Bishop's hit a 3 pointer but Jordan Moody countered with a 3 for the Cardinals and when Bishop's Jona Bermillo hit another 3, Moody was there to counter that one as well. With 7:27 left to play the Cards were still on top by 14 points with a 60-46 lead. Bishop's, however, went on a 10-0 run of their own helped out by several Cardinals turnovers and missed field goals and with 5:14 left in the game the score was 60-56 and the lead was only 4 points. Ezra Hodgson hit a jumper and after Bermillo hit his 5th 3 pointer for Bishops, to cut the lead to 3, Thomas once again soared to the rim for another dunk and was fouled on the play. His made free throw gave the Cards a 65-59 lead but Bishops came back to make it a 1 point game at 65-64. Richardson then made the first of 2 great game saving plays in the final 35 seconds of the game. Leading by that 65-64 score, the Cards Ed Correa with 33 ticks left, attempted a 3 point shot that bounced off the rim and was headed out of bounds until Richardson raced after it and backhanded the ball out to the top of the key where Mike Mitchell was able to corral it. Mitchell was fouled by Bishops and went to the line for a 1&1 free throw. Mitchell missed the front end but Richardson was johnny on the spot once more as he grabbed the rebound and passed it out to Mitchell, who was fouled again with 23 seconds left. This time he made them both and the Cards had to withstand 3 attempts from long distance by Bishop's to walk off with the 67-64 win.

Thomas led the Cardinals with 14 points (6x10 fg, 1x2 3's) 6 rebounds and 2 steals in 23 minutes. Richardson had 11 points (4x7 fg, 2x5 3's) and 6 rebounds in 22 minutes. He also had 3 assists, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Jordan Moody had 10 points (4 x6 fg, 2x3 3's), 3 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 assists and a block in 25 minutes. Ezra Hodgson had 9 pts. (4x10 fg, 1x2 3's) and 5 rebounds in 29 minutes. Reggie Williams had 7 pts (3x6 fg), 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal in 24 minutes. Mike Mitchell has 7 pts, and 2 assists in 27 minutes. Alan Siergiej had 5 pts (2x5 fg) and 5 rebounds in 5 minutes.

Overall this was a nice win by Plattsburgh against a team of scholarship players who had a number of 5th year seniors that were 25 or 26 years old.

Edit: Just found out that Bishop's opened their regular season on Saturday night at McGill University. McGill was the winner of their conference regular season and playoff titles last year. They were once again expected to battle Bishop's for conference supremacy. Bishop's found themselves trailing 59-57 with just seconds remaining. Their 6'11' forward drained a 3 pointer with 12 ticks on the clock and the Gaiters beat the McGill Redmen 60-59. Nice start for Bishop's to beat the reigning champs.

Several weeks ago on Oct. 25th, Plattsburgh State scrimmaged Division II St. Michael's College. The Cardinals beat St Mike's on the road by 5 points in a game that was in the mid 60's. Over the weekend on Saturday, St Michael's, located in Burlington Vt. played Division I University of Vermont in UVM's Patrick Gymnasium and beat the Catamounts by a score of 63-61.

Also on Saturday Nov. 8th Plattsburgh State scrimmaged Clarkson College in Plattsburgh and they beat the Golden Knights by a 62-46 score. Plattsburgh got solid contributions from their entire 10 man rotation.

Some big news over the weekend made by the Oswego State Lakers but don't try and find it on the Oswego website because there is nary a word written about it. Oswego played the Division I Binghamton University Bearcats in an exhibition game in Binghamton on Friday night Nov. 7th and nearly walked out of the Bearcats Event Center with a victory. The Lakers gave the Bearcats all they could handle before losing the exhibition contest 75-74.

I think the SID at Oswego or someone in the athletic department thinks that this game was a scrimmage rather than an exhibition. Normally schools don't do a press release when 2 teams have a scrimmage but almost always issue a press release if the game is an exhibition. Oswego doesn't even list it on their schedule yet Binghamton listed it and then had a write up about the game. Here's the link to the story: http://www.bubearcats.com/index.php/news/show/mens_basketball_in_action_friday_night_at_home

I'm surprised that our young friend DCahill who has already picked Oswego State to win the SUNYAC conference in 3 posts before this one, wasn't falling all over himself trying to get a post written about this outstanding showing by the Lakers.

Even more amazing is that the Lakers nearly pulled off this upset and they didn't have the services of their outstanding point guard Brian Sortino. Also missing from the lineup was rotation player Keith Tyson and last year's starter Mark Candelario only logged 4 minutes of floor time. Elijah McLaurin another solid backcourt player also missed the game. Sophomore newcomer Dustin Pond had 11 points and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench...impressive!! Kyle Covley with 20 points (8x15 fg, 4x7 3's) and Matt Crockett with 12 points (4x8 fg, 4x8 3's) led the charge for Oswego. Guard Walter Sampson sparkled with 9 points and 10 assists. The Lakers hit 15 of 26 attempts from behind the arc. That'll keep you in quite a few games.

One thing I almost forgot to mention...Binghamton went to the foul line 35 times and made 26 of those attempts. And Oswego??? Well they got to go to the line 5 times and made 3 of their attempts. All 5 free throws were taken by the same player Walter Sampson. Hard to believe that no other Oswego player was fouled in the act of shooting in the entire game. Oswego was whistled for 28 fouls and Binghamton only had 12 personals called on them. Hard to beat a DI team with an inequity in that category of that magnitude.

Here's a link to the box score as well.  http://www.bubearcats.com/sports/mbask/bing-oswego.pdf

I'm not going to let Mr. Cahill get off the hook on this one. He should have been all over this story. :o ::) Good thing I'm keeping track of YOUR Lakers Derrick. ;D
