All ten teams in action today with 5:30 start times.

Plattsburgh State  at  Oneonta State      5:30 PM

Cardinals travel south with revenge on their minds to reverse an overtime setback in Plattsburgh. I promised Zach Mager and Frankie Kelly right after that December 6th encounter that we'd get some payback tonight. Plattsburgh has won 4 of their last 5 conference games to take over the lead in the YAC. They are 3-1 on the road but now have 5 in a row away from home (who in hell made out this schedule?) before finishing up with 2 home games. Oneonta with wins in 3 of their last 4 games is one of 4 teams tied for 5th place with a 6-5 YAC record. Only a 2nd overtime loss to Oswego prevents a 4 game win streak. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 4 point favorite in this one. I'm taking the Cardinals to split the season series by leaving Dewar Arena with an 83-77 victory.

Potsdam State  at  New Paltz State      5:30 PM

The Bears could pull off an upset here if they play as good as they did against Buffalo State last weekend. The Hawks, after a big upset of Oswego, fell back down to earth with consecutive home losses in their last 2 games. They are now one of those 4 teams tied with a 6-5 record. A loss here to the lowly Bears could cripple their chances for a playoff spot. Potsdam with virtually no hope for a playoff position can play the spoiler here and will certainly try to do so. The point spread shows the Hawks as a double digit 10 point home favorite. I don't think the Bears can win on the road again and look for New Paltz to win this one by a 75-64 final score. But I hope I'm wrong.

Geneseo State  at  Brockport State      5:30 PM  Co-Featured game of the Night

I think the Knights let one get away the last time these 2 hooked up in Geneseo just a week ago. Brockport overcame a 12 point 2nd half deficit to win by a narrow 71-68 margin. The Golden Eagles had won 3 in a row before dropping a game to Cortland on Tuesday night. That loss, coupled with Geneseo's big win over Oswego, left both teams with a 6-5 record and are the other two teams tied for that 5th place logjam. Brockport has won the last 5 meetings between these clubs and 10 of the past 11 so the Knights have to be feeling some pressure here. It will be tough to go into Tuttle North and scratch out a win. The oddsmakers have made Brockport a slim 1 point favorite which means it's a tossup.  Both teams need this game in the worst way and I think that Brockport will prevail as they hold home court. They might need overtime to get it done though. Brockport wins this one 74-72.

Cortland State  at  Buffalo State      5:30 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Night

Cortland is currently in 3rd place in the YAC but that tenuous position is up for grabs tonight as the 4th place Bengals look to avenge an early season loss to the Red Dragons. Both teams have been hot as Cortland has went 6-1 since their 3 game losing streak back in early January. They are also 5-1 in their past 6 conference games. Buff State is a different team with Chris Cartwright back on board. With Rod Epps, Chris Thompson and Larry Rivers also solid scoring options it's hard to shut down their high powered offense. Jordan Glover, their 2nd best 3 point shooter will probably be questionable for the game tonight. The Bengals have went  10-3 overall and 7-3 in the YAC since Cartwright's return. A possibility of a first round bye in the YAC tournament is still within their reach. The oddsmakers have made the Red Dragons a 2 point favorite over the Bengals, but I think that Buffalo State will win this game and split the season series with Cortland. Final score will be Buffalo State 84-76

Oswego State  at  Fredonia State      5:30 PM

The Lakers now have some company at the top of the standings and will need to take care of business tonight against the Blue Devils. Fredonia, like Potsdam, is playing for pride and they hope to spring an upset or two before the season is over. That won't happen tonight even though they gave the Lakers a good score in Oswego back in December when they nearly did pull off the upset, only losing 63-62. The Lakers won't be taking them so lightly tonight. The pointspread has Oswego listed as a 13 point favorite and that may be about right. Oswego takes this one 75-60.

Halftime scores:

Plattsburgh leads Oneonta 41-36 Jordan Moody with 12 points on 5x7 shooting with a pair of trifectas. Kyle Richardson also with a pair of triples and some big rebounds has 9 points off the bench. Lawrence Coleman leads Oneonta with 14 points on 4x7 shooting. Jackson Zuvic and Frankie Kelly with 5 points each.

Geneseo is on top of Brockport by a 39-31 score.  Andy Drescher with 15 points and Gordon Lyons with 9. Aaron White with 8 points to lead Brockport. Mike Gallagher and Patrick Modzelewski with 6 each.

Oswego in front of Fredonia 36-24.  Brian Sortino with 13 points and Kyle Covely with 10 for Oswego. Alexander Grace and Ian Helps with 6 each for the Blue Devils

Buffalo State leads Cortland  32-24 at the break. Lovell Smith with 12 points and Rod Epps with 12 to pace the Bengals. Blair Estarfaa with 7 points and Shayne Martinez with 6 for Cortland

New Platz leads Potsdam by a 26-17 score with less than a minute left in the half. Taylor Sowah with 9 points for New Paltz. Rishawd Hendricks with 11 for the Bears.

Final scores

Plattsburgh State 74  Oneonta State 71
Had the Cards winning by 6 in this one and twice they allowed Oneonta to come back from sizable leads. Plattsburgh trailed by 4 late and got help from some critical Red Dragon turnovers.

Buffalo State 60  Cortland State 54
Correctly picked the mild upset here as the Bengals held on for the win. Points scored was surprisingly low for a Bengals game. Had Buff State winning by 8, and they should have.

New Paltz State 64  Potsdam 52
Both teams scored about 10-12 less than I thought they would. Had the MOV fairly close though as I said it would be an 11 point difference, 75-64

Oswego State 65  Fredonia 53
I had the Lakers winning 75-60 so they were close to the 15 points I thought they would win by.

Geneseo State  76  Brockport State  62

Only game I was wrong about and I had a feeling that Geneseo would win this one to split the season series. But the Brockport-Geneseo history was so strongly in Brockport's favor I got swayed by that.

4-1 with my picks today losing only the Brockport-Geneseo game.  Point totals were relatively low today in most of the games. I'm blaming it on the cold weather. It takes the air out of the ball. (Isn't that what Belichick said)

Final Score

Plattsburgh 74 Oneonta 71  Cardinals down 71-67 with only 43 seconds left get a big 3 pointer from Mike Mitchell and a pair of free throws from Jordan Moody after a Red Dragon turnover to go in front 72-71. Oneonta misses a 3 pointer on their possession and the Cardinals get the rebound and Moody goes to the line for a 1&1. He makes them both to up the lead to 3 and after another Oneonta time out, the Red Dragons fail to get a shot off as they commit another turnover with three tenths of a second on the clock. Cards inbound for the win.

I called this an 83-77 Plattsburgh win and the teams were well on their way to post those numbers when the score was 46-44 with over 16 minutes left in the game. Much like the first half, Plattsburgh opened up a lead of 9 points at 55-46 on another 9-0 run (they were up by 13 in the first half). Tied at 46, Reggie Williams scored inside, Mike Mitchell drained a three pointer, and Jordan Moody reeled off 4 straight points. Only this time the Red Dragons came all the way back and took the lead, 64-63, on a Mikey McElroy layup with 4:48 to go. All of a sudden this game had a serious deja vu feel to it, as it looked like a replay of what took place in Plattsburgh 2 months earlier. Oneonta went up by 3 on a pair of Jackson Zuvic free throws but back to back Cardinal baskets by Moody and Shamoy McIntosh put Plattsburgh back in front 67-66 with just under 3 minutes left to play. Oneonta's McElroy was fouled at the other end and made a pair of free throws and after a Plattsburgh turnover Oneonta looked to expand their lead. They missed a three pointer and got the rebound, missed a layup and the ball went out of bounds off the Cardinals. Third time's a charm and this time the Red Dragons made the Cardinals pay as Kelly drove to the basket, dished to Zuvic, who swished a jumper to make it a 70-67 lead with 1:09 to play. The Cardinals called time out and tried to set up for a game tying triple but they missed and Oneonta came away with the rebound. Lawrence Coleman was fouled and hit 1 of 2 to make it a 4 point lead with 43 seconds left and I was praying for overtime. 7 seconds later I had a chance that my prayer would be answered as Mike Mitchell hit that big 3 pointer, his 4th one of the game, that set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Jordan Moody, the reigning SUNYAC Player of the Week, once again came up huge for the Cardinals as he led all scorers with a game high 24 points. Jordan was 7x13 from the field with a pair of long range bombs and was 8 of 11 from the line.

Kyle Richardson, again, came in and gave the team a big lift when he hit a pair of threes midway through the first half. He finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals and a block in 24 minutes on the court.

Point guard Mike Mitchell also fired in 12 points all on 4 long distance shots, and none bigger than the one with 36 seconds left in the game. Mike was 4x6 from the field with 3 assists and a steal. (I swear he had more assists than that)

Reggie Williams was the leading rebounder in the game with 8 boards. he had 9 points, 2 assists and a block.

The Cardinals Eddie Correa started the game but was forced to leave after only 3 minutes and did not return. Not happy to lose one of the premier 3 point shooters in the YAC so early and certainly hope it's nothing serious.

Oneonta was led by Lawrence Coleman with 17 points and 5 rebounds. Jackson Zuvoc had 15 points and 3 rebounds while Mikey McElroy dropped in 14 points and grabbed 6 boards.

The last time Oneonta played Plattsburgh in December and won in overtime, the trio of Zach Mager (31) Frankie Kelly (18) and Jack Dignan (15) scored a total of 64 points. Today they scored 18 between them. I warned those guys we'd get some payback when we went down there.  ;D

Plattsburgh improves to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference. They remain tied for 1st place with Oswego and will be at New Paltz tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM.

Oneonta drops to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the YAC. They are now tied with Brockport for 7th place but with Potsdam coming to town tomorrow at 2 PM and Brockport off until next Tuesday they could move into sole possession of that spot with a win to go to 7-6. The Red Dragons really need Plattsburgh to beat New Paltz tomorrow and that would leave the Hawks with the same 7-6 record. Then Oneonta would be in sole possession of 6th place since they own the tiebreaker over New Paltz with a season sweep.

Only eight teams in action today as travel partners Brockport and Geneseo have the day off. 4 games on tap all at 2 PM

Plattsburgh State     at  New Paltz State        2:00 PM

The Cardinals are hoping they might be in first place all alone at the end of the day. They need a win here and some help from Buffalo State which I was guaranteed they would provide. New Paltz with a win and some help could find themselves alone in 3rd place at day's end. Plattsburgh won the earlier matchup but the Hawks have already pulled off 4 big upsets this season and would love nothing more than to ground the Cardinals here. The Plattsburgh upperclassmen remember that just 2 years ago the Cardinals surrendered an 8 point lead in the final 2:30 to lose to the Hawks 75-72 and it cost them a chance for the top seed in the playoffs. Hopefully the Cardinals got a good night's sleep after a hard fought game yesterday against Oneonta. The Hawks were not pushed all that hard in their win over the Bears and should be the fresher team. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a solid 8 point favorite over the home team. The Cards will probably be a man short as 3 point specialist Eddie Correa is doubtful for today's game. That just means that Kyle Richardson, Mike Mitchell, Shamoy McIntosh, Ezra Hodgson or Jordan Moody will have to fill that role. All five players and several others are all capable of lighting it up from long distance. At times this year the Cardinals have lived and died by the 3 ball. I think they live a little today. Cardinals stay hot and win by a 76-66 final score.

Oswego State  at  Buffalo State        2:00 PM   SUNYAC Game of the Week

The Bengals are slowly but surely picking teams off one by one, as they climb up the rungs of the conference ladder. Just a few short weeks ago they were in 8th place with a 1-4 mark in the YAC.  Now they sit all alone in 3rd place and a win today can go a long way toward that goal of getting a first round bye. The Bengals will be hard pressed to win the top spot since they would need to win out and Plattsburgh would need to lose 3 of their remaining 6 games since the Cardinals hold the tiebreaker over the Bengals. But stranger things have happened and for now the Boys from the Queen City have the Lakers squarely in their crosshairs as they hope to move further up the ladder. Oswego has lost 2 of their last 4 games and despite a blow out 27 point win over the Bengals back in December the oddsmakers have made Buffalo State a slim 1 point favorite. The men that make the odds must have also heard that Chris Cartwright was back in town which gives Rod Epps and company another go to guy that must be defended. This Bengals team should give the Lakers all they can handle and I think this one will go down to the wire. I'm taking Buffalo State to win 78-75.

Cortland State  at  Fredonia State        2:00 PM

Cortland will look to get well against the Blue Devils after they lost to Buff State and fell from 3rd place into a 3 way tie for
the 4th spot. Fredonia is hoping to get that 2nd conference win and leave the basement all alone to Potsdam. The point spread shows the home team to be a 14 point underdog, which is fairly consistent with the average MOV that the visiting team has enjoyed in Steele Hall this season. Cortland gets healthy and wins by a 72-61 final score.

Potsdam State        Oneonta State        2:00 PM

Oneonta will look to get well against the Bears after they lost to Plattsburgh and....this sounds very familiar for some reason. These Red Dragons are hoping they can get back into a playoff position by the end of the day. Tied with Brockport for 7th place, a win, coupled with a New Paltz loss, would most likely leave them in 6th place all by themselves. The Bears hung with Oneonta when they traveled to Potsdam but I think the Red Dragons just have too many scoring options for the Bears to deal with. So do the oddsmakers who have installed Oneonta as 14 point favorites. Potsdam's best hope is to take some air out of the ball and use as much clock as they can. They won't win a track meet with Mager, Kelly and Co. They won't win with a slowdown style either, but the loss won't be as painful. Oneonta will score 80+ points, the Bears will struggle to get to 60.  Final score Oneonta 83 Potsdam 59. Hope I'm wrong though.

Buffalo State 80 Oswego 76.

After Oswego's Walter Sampson hit a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 76 with 1:09 remaining, the Bengals Chris Cartwright drove to the hoop and scored on a nifty layup to give the Bengals the lead with 39 seconds left. The Lakers came down and turned the ball over with 19 seconds left and then fouled to put the Bengals at the line for a 1&1. Buff State missed the front end however and the Lakers were back in business....or so they thought. The Bengal's Rod Epps stole the ball and was fouled with 8 seconds to play and calmly dropped both free throws through to make it a 2 possession game. That turned out to be the final score.

Rod Epps was the top point producer for the Bengals with 20 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks and that all important steal near the end of the game. Thanks Rod that makes up for that extra trip to the Sub Shop I made to get your lunch last Friday when you were visiting Plattsburgh. 8-) ;D

Jordan Glover was back in action and came off the bench to hit 4 of 7 from long distance to total 16 points. He added 6 rebounds 3 assists and a steal. Lovell Smith had 15 points with 4 rebounds, and Chris Thompson had 13 points with 5 rebounds.

Chris Cartwright had the go ahead basket among his 11 points and added 9 assists and 3 rebounds. Guard Derrick Fernandez only scored 3 points, but had 5 rebounds, 5 assists and a steal.

Oswego got 22 points from Brian Sortino, who captured the game's scoring honors. Sortino also had 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a steal. Walter Sampson was close behind with 18 points, 3 assists and 3 steals. Mark Candelario had 11 points and was the game's high rebounder with 7 boards.

The Bengals shot 61.5% from the field (32x52) and 50% from downtown (8x16) and that proved to be the difference as Oswego only shot 41.4% (29x70) and 33.3% from long range (6x18). The Bengals had twice as many turnovers as the Lakers...16 to 8 which helped keep Oswego in the game. Buff State enjoyed a slight edge off the boards with a 35-33 advantage.

The Bengals defeat of Oswego, coupled with Plattsburgh's loss to New Paltz didn't change the conference leaders but it did bring them back to the pack a little more.

Buffalo State remains solidly in 3rd place by themselves for the time being. They improve to 13-7 overall and 9-5 in the YAC. They will host Geneseo State on Tuesday night at 5:30 in another key game that will impact the standings.

Oswego stays tied with Plattsburgh in first place, each with a 9-4 record in the conference. The Lakers are now 13-7 overall. They host New Paltz on Tuesday evening also at 5:30

New Paltz State 69 Plattsburgh State 55

This game was not pretty to watch and was downright sad if you were a Plattsburgh State backer. I guess the long trip downstate took too much out of the Cardinals because they just didn't look like the team I'm used to seeing. New paltz took it to them from the opening tip off and whenever Plattsburgh would make any kind of move the Hawks were there to combat it. I kept waiting for the run that the Cardinals usually unleash to turn things around but it never materialized. The Hawks got the loose balls, they got the putbacks, and had way too many easy baskets because of defensive lapses. If the Cardinals play like that again they will play themselves right into a short post season. Fortunately for Plattsburgh, Buffalo State did us a favor and defeated Oswego which kept the Cardinals in a first place tie with the Lakers. Still, what might have been...alone at the top...could come back to haunt the Cards later on. It's the 2nd time in 3 years that the underdog Hawks have derailed the Plattsburgh express.

The Hawks, except for a brief moment when the score was tied at 5-5, led the entire game. And usually the lead was between 6 and 12 points. It reached double figures in the opening period for the first time on a pair of Taylor Sowah free throws to make it 24-14 with 8:36 left to play. The Cards cut the lead in half but The Hawks came back to lead by 10 at the break.

Plattsburgh opened the 2nd half with an inside move by Reggie Williams and a 3 pointer by Jordan Moody to make it a two possession game. The Hawks responded with their own layup and 3 pointer both off the hands of RJ Rosa. But Rosa wasn't finished as he added another 3 pointer and when Alex Perlman scored inside the lead had ballooned to 15 and I knew that this game was in serious jeopardy. The Hawks came to play and it looked like the Cards wanted to go home. Plattsburgh cut the lead to 9 points twice in the 2nd half but for most of the remainder of the game the Hawks were well in command.

The Hawks' RJ Rosa led all scorers as he had 17 points, 5 rebounds and 8 steals. Taylor Sowah had a double double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. He also had 3 assists, 2 steals and a block. Andrew Seniuk had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Alex Perlman also hit double figures with 11 points. Eric Regenbogen came off the bench to score 8 points, grab 5 rebounds, with 3 assists and 2 steals.

New Paltz outshot the Cardinals from the field, from long range and from the line. They had a slight 40-38 edge off the glass and had 19 turnovers to 20 for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh got 16 points from Shamoy McIntosh, who added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a pair of steals. Kyle Richardson was close to a double double as he scored 10 points and had 8 rebounds in just 23 minutes off the bench. Jordan Moody had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 assists and 2 steals. Reggie Williams shared rebounding honors with Sowah as he also grabbed 10 boards. He added 4 points, 2 blocks, 2 steals and 2 assists.

New Paltz slips into a tie for 4th place with Cortland as they improve their conference mark to 8-5. The Hawks overall record now stands at 10-10. Tuesday they travel to Oswego to face the Lakers who will be looking for some revenge.

The Cardinals can't stand prosperity as they follow up a nice conference win, with a perplexing loss for the 4th time in 6 weekends of SUNYAC action. They fall to 14-6 overall and still control their own destiny in the YAC as they remain tied with Oswego for the lead with a 9-4 conference mark.

Plattsburgh will be off until next weekend when they go back on the road to play Cortland on Friday and the Lakers on Saturday. Could be the most important 2 games of the SUNYAC season....at least until the next weekend!! :D

Magicman, I'm glad that my Bengals made you happy today. They sure made my day! The ability of this team to be able to have different folks step up each night is scary.  Today Rod Epps led the way with 20 pts and Jordan Glover comes off the bench with 16 .  Cartwright adds 9 assist!  Yesterday Lovell Smith leads the way 16 pts and 10 rebounds, Cartwright adds 14 pts and Chris Thompson does his usual double double (10 pts/13 boards).

It has been an interesting journey, to say the least.  Not sure what exactly the catalyst is but Chris Cartwright is in their somewhere.  I can't remember the last time a player was in the top 3 in scoring, assists, assists to turnover ratio, 3 Ptrs per game and free throw %.  ToP 3 in each. Unselfish and can score.  Maybe it's been Jordan Glover.  When this kid is healthy the Bengals are a complete team. It's too bad that he has missed 4/5 Yac contests or else he would be a all sunyac sure bet. Hmm maybe it's Chris Thompson who has finally become the force in the middle that many Bengal followers have been expecting from day 1. I'm convinced that his best is yet to come! Could it be the Bengals version of the "energizer bunny" Lovell Smith. This kid has got to be the most unassuming ball player that I have ever seen. Quiet and goes about his business like its the last game he will ever play.  He consistently gives up 3/4 inches to bigger folks and yet out rebounds most game in and game out! I have no doubt that a consistent Rod Epps has been a main contributor to the Bengals consistency. At any point in a game he, Cartwright, Glover,Smith or Thompson can put this team on their shoulders and carry them.  I haven't seen a Bengal flow like this in years !

Fortunately coach Ansari has developed a supporting cast that has stepped in when called and performed admirably.  Derrick Fernandez and Larry Rivers have been the consummate role players that any team needs to be successful. Ditto for Rey Jordan, Kevin Marmalejos, Leon Moise, Akeem Williams, Luke Jenkins, Sean Buckley, Mike Henry and Justin Best who all continue to fill in when called.

I hope that these boys stay hungry.  God knows that these 2 wins this weekend are just that, 2 wins. No more.....no less.  I'm hoping the best for these kids. They deserve it.

Go Bengals!!!

A coach from another conference made a comment to me last night about how "your" Sunyac "conference is really down this year". ???  I say that I was surprised is an understatement. I told him that "I think that. from top to bottom. the SUNYAC is the toughest conference in the east, by a long shot" ( he was a coach from the Liberty League). I took the Buffalo State non- conference record as proof. True that the BENGALS non conference east record is not not stellar, but look at the Competition. The fact that every night we play each other tough each night means that there are no cupcakes in the 'Yac.

True my Bengals lost to Hobart. THen Hobart lost to Brockport (currently in 7th place in the SUNYAC). Right now Hobart is in first place in the Liberty league tied with Clarkson who they split with and Hobart swept #2 Skidmore in their season series). My Bengals also lost to St John Fisher (#24 in NCAA right now at 18-2). Fisher lost to, (Current SUNYAC #6), Geneseo (neutral Floor) and they lost to AMCC #2 Medaille ( who lost to my BENGALS, Cortland and Geneseo).

Look at any 'Yac non conference schedule and you will see team like Williams college, Middlebury, Eastern Conn & Morrisville. All NCAA participants last year.  No cupcake schedules for our teams. Tough competition is the norm. Last years success has no doubt, gotten us a lot of attention and makes other teams bring their "A" game when they face a SUNYAC team. My BENGALS non - conference East record is 3 games vs the #1 Liberty League team, #1 Empire 8 team and the #2 Amcc team. Similar 'Yac teams also have similar Eastern region records.

Last year I succesfully predicted 3 NCAA births. I'm doing the same this year. We beat up on each other but when we step outside of our confernce, the "Yac is 1 tough cookie. Heck our Conference resembles another that has some real tough teams in it. (look familiar?)

Virginia           9-1   .900   21-1
Notre Dame   9-3   .750   21-4
North Carolina   8-3   .727   18-6
Duke           7-3   .700   20-3
Louisville           7-3   .700   19-4
Syracuse           6-4   .600   15-8
Clemson           6-4   .600   14-8
Pitt                   5-5   .500   16-8
NC State           5-6   .455   14-10
Florida State   5-6   .455   13-11
Miami           4-5   .444   14-8

Anyone wanna tell me that the ACC is a 1 team league?
