New Paltz State 47  at  Oswego State 72
I had the Lakers winning by a 74-66 final score. I was close with the Oswego part but the Hawks didn't uphold their end of the contest.

The Lakers didn't waste any time as they put the Hawks away early. Up 9-5 with 14:49 left in the half, Oswego went on an 11-0 run fueled by a pair of Alex Rawa 3 pointers to open up a 20-5 lead and the Lakers were never threatened. They gradually extended their advantage until it reached a high of 29 points at 67-38 with 6:32 left in the game. Oswego emptied their bench and coasted home. Walter Sampson with 15, Brian Sortino with 13 and Alex Rawa with 12 points to lead Oswego.

Taylor Sowah with 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Alex Perlman with 10 points and 5 boards.

The Lakers are back in first and temporarily are all alone as Plattsburgh State was idle tonight. Lakers with a 10-4 conference mark take on Potsdam Friday night before the big showdown on Saturday against Plattsburgh. I'm tempted to travel to Oswego and see this game but the last time I was in Oswego the wind coming off that lake literally blew the doors right off my car. Well one of them anyway. I haven't been back since and that was 1970.

New Paltz falls into a 3 way tie for 5th place with an 8-6 record. Up next is Geneseo and then Brockport on the road this weekend. Both of those teams will be looking for some revenge and the crystal ball thinks they both might get it. This could be a make or break weekend for New Paltz.

Geneseo State 78  at  Buffalo State 72
This was my only loss of the day as Geneseo took over this game in the closing moments and held off the Bengals. I had Buff State winning by an 83-77 score and wasn't far off with my totals but had the wrong team on top. Not surprised at the outcome though as Geneseo needed this game more than the Bengals did. The Knights finish with a tougher stretch than Buff State and a loss here could have proven fatal.

This was a close game all the way from start to finish but in the 2nd half the Bengals looked like my Cardinals did against New Paltz last Saturday. Too many 3 point shots, too soon in the possession and many of them weren't real good looks...instead of making the extra pass to get a better shot. The team only made 7 field goals in the entire 2nd half and were just 2 for 13 from behind the arc. Tied at 60, the Knights scored 6 straight points to open up some daylight and the Bengals could never catch them.

Gordon Lyons had a monster of a game for the Knights with 33 points and 15 rebounds...his 19th double double in 20 games. Easy to see why he is the nation's #1 rebounder. James McKenna and Andy Drescher both had 13 points to back him up.

Rod Epps had another big game against the Knights with 24 points. Lovell Smith had a double double of his own with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jordan Glover added 13 points and Chris Cartwright had 10.

Geneseo moves into sole possession of 3rd place at 8-5 and that's a heck of a lot better than the 7th place, a 7-6 mark  would have given them, had they lost. They host New Paltz and Oneonta this weekend and will be looking to move up even further in the standings.

Buffalo State has their 3 game YAC winning streak snapped but still are in playoff position. Their chances of winning the top seed took a hit but they can still earn a first round bye if they win their 3 remaining games and get a little help. They will only have 1 game this weekend when they face their travel partner Fredonia State on Friday evening.

Brockport State 82  at  Fredonia State 79
Brockport had to work hard for this one...harder than the 75-62 final I predicted. The Blue Devils have scored 62 or less points in 12 of their 20 games this year. I certainly didn't expect them to put up 79, their highest total of the year, against
the Golden Eagles. Still it wasn't enough to earn the win as the Eagles managed to create some space late in the game and go home with a W. The Blue Devils stayed with Brockport most of the way and even had a 63-62 lead with 6:41 left in the game. A 10 -2 run by Brockport, helped by back to back 3 pointers by Mike Gallagher, made it 72-65 with just under 4 minutes left. Fredonia did cut it to a one possession game at 76-73 with 1:29 left but the Golden Eagles went back up by 8 and the score was made more respectable by a pair of late 3 pointers from Fredonia's Kyree Hull.

Patrick Modzelewski was the game's high scorer as he led the Golden Eagles with 23 points. Clifton Lyerly had 18 for Brockport, while Levi Pace and Mike Gallagher both had 9 points.

Fredonia was led by Kyree Hull with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Ian Helps had 18 points and completed a double double with 11 rebounds. Max Pearce added 10 points.

Brockport needed this win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They are still in 8th place, but more importantly, are tied with the 4 teams directly ahead of them in the loss column. The Golden Eagles now have a conference record of 7-6 and with their next 3 games all at Tuttle North Gym they can take aim at a few of the teams in that logjam in front of them. They will start with Oneonta this Friday followed by New Paltz on Saturday afternoon. A pair of wins will put them solidly back into the playoff picture.

Fredonia will face Buff State on Friday evening still looking to pull off the big upset and have something to cheer about.

Oneonta State 72 at  Cortland State 67

I almost nailed this game as I had the Oneonta Red Dragons winning by a 73-70 final score. Oneonta's Grant Massaroni had a pair of free throw attempts with 9 seconds left in the game and he made the first one and missed the second to give Oneonta a score of 72 instead of 73 (Thanks Grant :P).  Then after the miss Cortland who trailed by 5 points and with very little time left, raced downcourt and threw up a 3 pointer that was off the mark and Cortland ended up with 67 instead of the 70 I wanted. If I get the 2nd free throw and the final 3 pointer to go down it would have been the perfect ending.

This was another tight contest, especially in the 2nd half. Cortland had the early lead by as much as 11 points at 21-10 and later at 26-15. Still down by 10 points at 36-26 with 4 minutes to go in the half, Oneonta scored on 3 straight possessions to narrow the lead to 3 points at 36-33. Neither team could score for the final 2:20 of the period and that's how they went into the break.

The 2nd half was hotly contested from the outset as 7 lead changes and 6 ties would take place before Oneonta, down 63-61, would get a layup from Zach Mager to tie it up at 63 with 2:29 to go. After a Cortland misfire they got a layup from Frankie Kelly for the 8th and final lead change. After a pair of misses at the Cortland end, Oneonta went to the well again and got yet another drive to the hoop by Kelly and the ball hung on the rim for a brief second before falling through the net. Kelly was fouled on the play, made the free throw to put the visitors up by a 68-63 score with 40 seconds left, and that was the play that ultimately proved to be the backbreaker. Oneonta made 4 of 6 free throws and Cortland scored on a pair of hurried drives to the hoop in the final 35 seconds.

Zach Mager was the game's high scorer with 19 points and 4 rebounds. Frankie Kelly had 13 points and 6 assists. Lawrence Coleman had 11 points with 6 rebounds and Mikey McElroy had 9 points with 6 rebounds.

Cortland got 15 points from Blair Estarfaa, a double double from Justin Prendergast of 14 points and 10 rebounds, plus 10 points from Shane Martinez along with 5 boards.

The win gives Oneonta a leg up on Cortland since the series sweep is as good as an extra game. Both Red Dragons are sitting with an 8-6 conference log but the Oneonta variety has the hammer, with the tiebreaker firmly in hand. Oneonta also has the series sweep over New Paltz. Both of those teams need to finish with 1 more win than Oneonta if they hope to climb over those Red Dragons. I can see Oneonta with at least 10 YAC wins which means that Cortland or New Paltz will need 11 wins to get ahead of them. Not sure that will happen.

Oneonta is on the road this weekend at Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday.

Cortland gets Plattsburgh on Friday and Potsdam on Saturday.

13 wins may get you home court for the playoffs.  12 wins should get you in the playoffs.  And 11 wins may possibly have you at home watching. If this ain't gut wrenching then there's no snow in Plattsburgh!!!!! ;)

Well Champ, you posted this before the Tuesday games took place and despite a few upsets and some home teams losing that night, not a heck of a lot has changed. I did some schedule crunching last night and with 3, 4, or 5 games left, depending on the team, it's possible that every one in the conference, except the bottom two clubs, can get to at least 11 wins. I don't think that it will happen but to even have eight teams, that could theoretically win that many games, this late in the season is pretty abnormal. Ever since the SUNYAC went to an 18 game schedule 6 years ago we have had either 4 or 5 teams reach double digits in wins each year, with the high water mark coming in 2011-12 when we had 5 teams reach at least 11 wins.

Here's how 8 teams could reach 11 wins this year.

1. Oswego currently has 10 wins. They beat Potsdam and reach 11

2. Plattsburgh currently has 9 wins. They beat Oswego and Potsdam and reach 11

3. Geneseo currently has 8 wins. They beat Plattsburgh, Potsdam, and Oswego to reach 11

4. Buffalo State currently has 9 wins. They beat Fredonia and New Paltz to reach 11

5. Cortland currently has 8 wins. They beat Potsdam, Plattsburgh, and Oswego to reach 11

6. Oneonta currently has 8 wins. They beat Fredonia, Buffalo State, and Geneseo to reach 11

7. New Paltz currently has 8 wins. They beat Fredonia, Brockport, and Geneseo to reach 11

8. Brockport currently has 7 wins. They beat Oneonta, Cortland, Plattsburgh and Potsdam to reach 11

I'm thinking that 5 teams hit double figures in the win column but only 3 teams get to 11 wins. The Conference leader will end up with a 13-5 record and it may be a tie between 2 teams  with a tiebreaker determining the top seed, much like what happened in 2009-10 when Oneonta and Plattsburgh tied for the top spot and the Cardinals won with a tiebreaker. I wouldn't mind if it was deja vu all over again, including how the conference tournament ended up that year. ;D

A full slate of action today in the SUNYAC with all 10  teams in action. Tip off is 5:30 for each game.

Plattsburgh State  at  Cortland State        5:30 PM   The Game of the Day
The Cardinals will be looking for some revenge as they allowed the Red Dragons to come back from a 10 point 2nd half deficit and win an overtime battle in Plattsburgh last month. Cortland has dropped 2 of 3 conference games in the past 7 days and has slipped into a tie for 6th place in the standings. The oddsmakers have Cortland favored by a slim 2 point margin but I can't see the Red Dragons sweeping the Cardinals this year. It's payback time tonight as Plattsburgh wins this one 76-71.

New Paltz State  at  Geneseo State        5:30 PM
The Knights are looking to win a season high 4th straight win. They have battled their way back into sole possession of 3rd place with 3 consecutive conference wins. With 3 straight home games and only down 1 game in the loss column to the teams directly above them in the standings, the Knights still have hopes they can secure the top seed for the playoffs. They have games remaining against both Oswego and Plattsburgh so if they win out it's possible they can pull that off. It starts with tonight's game, however, against the Hawks, who won by double figures over the Knights a month ago in the Hawk Center. New Paltz got hammered by Oswego on Tuesday night and dropped them from 3rd place into a tie for 6th. Another loss tonight and they could be in 8th place heading into tomorrow. The point spread favors the home team Knights by a 7 point margin. The Hawks have been the surprise team in the YAC this year and need to go at least 2-2 in their final four games to get into the playoffs. I'm not sure they can do that. I'll take the Knights in this game by a 74-65 final.

Oneonta State     at  Brockport State        5:30 PM
Oneonta has went 5-2 in their last 7 conference games with the losses coming against Oswego in overtime and Plattsburgh in a barnburner. They currently sit in 5th place by virtue of tiebreakers they own and securing a home game in the playoffs is their next step. Brockport is looking to achieve the same thing and a win tonight would give them a season sweep over Oneonta and a leg up on these Red Dragons. The oddsmakers have made Oneonta a slim 1 point road favorite in this one, despite the fact that the Red Dragons have lost 6 games in a row to Brockport. They also haven't won in Brockport since January 30th, 2009. I think both of those streaks will end tonight as Oneonta wins a close one and comes away with a 72- 69 victory.

Fredonia State  at  Buffalo State        5:30 PM
The Bengals had a reversal of fortune Tuesday night and lost a game that would have put them in good position for a home playoff game or even better a first round bye. Both of these goals are still an option but a first round bye will require some help. They can't take their travel partner lightly though, as the Blue Devils proved Tuesday against Brockport, when they almost knocked off the Golden Eagles. The oddsmakers have made the Bengals a 14 point favorite but I think they could win by 20. Bengals 87 Fredonia 67.

Potsdam State     at  Oswego State        5:30 PM
The Bears still hoping for that season highlight but it will be tough getting it on the road against the conference leaders. Still the Lakers are capable of delivering a stinker (see Elmira, Loras,) and Potsdam has got nothing to lose. The spread is the largest of the day as the oddsmakers think the Lakers will win by 18 points. Potsdam hasn't been close on the road all season other than their win at Fredonia. Everything else has been a double digit loss. It should be more of the same tonight as the Lakers win this one 80-61. Sure hope I'm wrong though and the big upset happens.

Does Plattsburgh ever lose in your predictions?  ;D Magicman

There have been a few occasions where I have picked them to lose...very few. ;) Just not this year.

I like my Cardinals this year Derek. I have seen most of the top ranked teams in the country play this season, many of them on multiple occasions. There is a lot of parity in Division III this year and I haven't seen any team that is clearly a cut above the rest. I've yet to see a team that my Cardinals can't beat when they play the way I know they can. That doesn't mean they will win them all because they can throw a clunker in there with the best of them, and they already have. So this year I will probably pick them every game they play. I expect them to have a tough game today and tomorrow against the Lakers. Next weekend two more tough games are on tap. But I think that this year, they are the best team, top to bottom, in the SUNYAC. Funny thing, though, the best team doesn't always win and Plattsburgh may not be the SUNYAC champs this year. But if there was a place where you could go and place a wager on which team you thought would win the championship, I would be there, betting on the Cardinals. :)

Final Score

Plattsburgh State 84  Cortland State 63.

I had the Cardinals winning by a 76-71 final. I was off with the margin of victory but my 147 total points was exactly what was scored in the game.

The Cardinals win much easier than I thought they would. Cortland twice came back from double figure deficits to make it a game but the 3rd time was a charm for the Cardinals. After the Red Dragons cut a 13 point 2nd half lead from 40-27 down to 44-43 with 12:50 left on the clock, the Cards went inside to big man Reggie Williams who got an old fashioned 3 point play, almost got a second one on the next Cardinal possession, but missed the free throw and after a Shamoy McIntosh 3 pointer Williams scored inside again.  The lead was back to 8 points with 10:34 to go. After several minutes of missed opportunities on both ends of the court, the Cardinals then showed off their versatility as 3 different players hit 3 pointers for their next 3 field goals. First it was Jordan Moody with a triple, countered by a three ball from Cortland's Blair Estarfaa. Then Plattsburgh's Ezra Hodgson followed with another three pointer, his 3rd one of the night. That was answered by a layup by Matt McGown to pull Cortland back within single digits. Shortly after that Cardinal point guard, Mike Mitchell, buried one from long distance to up the lead back to 12 points. The Red Dragons' Estarfaa was fouled behind the arc, went to the line and made all 3 free throws to cut the lead to 9 points but the X-man, Xavier Thomas, got to the rim twice in the next 50 seconds and the lead was at 14 and rising. The Cardinals went 8x8 from the line down the stretch to pull away for the 21 point win.

The Cardinals showed just how deep they are tonight as they were missing their 2nd leading scorer, and main 3 point shooting threat Eddie Correa. Eddie leads the SUNYAC in 3 point field goal percentage at 48% and missed his 2nd game in a row. Still the Cardinals had 5 players reach double figures and the team was 10x16 from downtown (62.5%). Six different players scored from beyond the arc.

Reggie Williams was the games leading scorer tonight as he showed why he's leading the SUNYAC in field goal percentage with 57.8% accuracy. Tonight he was 9x14 from the field to total 21 points, with 4 rebounds 2 assists and a block. Reggie also leads the YAC in blocks with 43.

Xavier Thomas came off the bench and scored 16 points on 7x14 shooting and had 3 more dunks to add to his highlight reel. If there was a dunk catgory in the SUNYAC I'm pretty sure Xavier would be at the top of the list...both in quality as well as quantity. He had a team high 6 rebounds and 3 steals as well.

Shamoy McIntosh (4x7 fg, 2x4 3's, 4x4 ft) scored 14 points and equaled Thomas' total of 6 rebounds.

Ezra Hodgson (3x4 fg, 3x3 3's, 1x3 ft) and Jordan Moody (4x5 fg, 2x3 3's) both scored 10 points.

Point guard Mike Mitchell was just short of a double-double as he had a season high 12 assists to go along with his 8 points, 4 rebounds and a steal. Mike leads the SUNYAC in total number of assists with 105, assists per game at 5.3, and assist/turnover ratio at 2.1.

Cortland had 4 players in double figures led by Blair Estarfaa with 15 points (3x9 fg, 1x5 3's, 8x11 ft).

TJ Hefele had 14 points (4x11 fg, 4x7 3's, 2x2 ft), 3 boards, 1 assist and a steal.

Matt McGowan had a game high 7 rebounds and was a perfect 6x6 from the field for 12 points. He also had 3 assists.

Lamard Herron also had 12 points (3x14 fg, 1x4 3's, 5x7 ft), 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.

The main difference in tonight's game was the big discrepancy in the shooting percentages. Plattsburgh shot a season high 59.2 % from the field (29x49) and also had a season best 62.5% from long distance (10x16). The Red Dragons were only 18x56 from the field (32.1%) and slightly worse from long range 7x22 (31.8%). Cortland did have better numbers from the line as they hit 20x27 free throws (74.1%) to 16x24 for Plattsburgh (66.7%) but those four extra made free throws couldn't come close to the field goal differential.   The Cardinals had a slight advantage off the glass, 35-32 but Cortland committed fewer turnovers with 7 to Plattsburgh's 11.

Plattsburgh gets to avenge their earlier loss to Cortland and in the process bumps the Red Dragons into a 3 way tie for the 6th and final playoff spot. They are tied with Oneonta and New Paltz, all with 8-7 records but if the regular season ended today Oneonta would claim the final playoff spot by virtue of their season sweep of the Hawks and Cortland.

The Cardinals improved their overall record to 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the SUNYAC. They remain tied with Oswego in the loss column, while the Lakers have a game in hand in the win column, and are presently 11-4 after their lop sided win over Potsdam tonight. Tomorrow's game matching the top two teams in the YAC may not determine the conference's number 1 seed and playoff host but it could go a long way in doing so. I'd feel a whole lot better if Eddie Correa was suiting up tomorrow and I'm hoping that he was held out tonight to save him for tomorrow.

Cortland drops to 15-7 overall and 8-7 in the YAC. They will look to get back on the winning track tomorrow against Potsdam and since just about everyone has gone no worse than 1&1 this year when they play Plattsburgh and their travel partner I'm guessing that  a dose of the Bears will get the Red Dragons healthy. They have to win that game to have any hope of making the playoffs. Even so, they finish next weekend with 2 tough road games, at Brockport and then Oswego. I think that Cortland needs to win 2 of these last 3 games and that still might not be enough to get in, if the one they lose is to Brockport.

Other final scores from last night.

Geneseo State 76 New Paltz 65
I had the Knights winning this one by a 74-65 score. I was going to give a black mark to the Geneseo player that scored their final 2 points and prevented me from a perfect prediction but it was 2 free throws by Andy Drescher, so I can't fault him for making them both. I will give RJ Rosa the black mark because he committed the meaningless foul with 33 seconds left when his team was down by 11 points. ;D

Hawks weren't going to let Gordon Lyons beat them as they held him to his 2nd lowest output of the year with just 11 points. It was also just the 2nd time in 21 games that Lyons failed to get a double-double as he was limited to 6 rebounds. The only other time he didn't get a double-double was against...you guessed it....New Paltz, back on January 10th when he was held to 9 boards. I'm sure Gordon would rather have the victory, though.

Instead it was James McKenna with the big double-double of 26 points and 10 rebounds that led the way for the Knights. Andy Drescher was close behind him with 20 points, 3 steals, 2 assists and 2 boards. Nick Fessenden came off the bench with 9 points and 8 rebounds in 21 minutes of court time.

Taylor Sowah had 22 points and 9 boards to lead the Hawks. Kevin Roach had 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals. RJ Rosa and Eric Regenbogen both had 10 points.

Geneseo stays alone in 3rd place at 9-5 in the YAC and if they win today they will tie one of the 2 teams in front of them, in the loss column, as Oswego or Plattsburgh will end the day with a 5th loss. First place in the regular season is still within the Knights grasp.

New Paltz at 8-7 has slipped to their lowest spot of the season as they are tied with Cortland for 7th place. A loss today at Brockport could further dampen their playoff hopes.

Brockport State 56   Oneonta 52

This was the only game I missed as I thought the Red Dragons would finally snap their losing streak against Brockport.
The Golden Eagles, with the win last night, have moved up to 5th place as they jumped over the 3 teams ahead of them at the start of play on Friday. Coach Dunne, who lost more talent than anybody from last year, continues to have the Golden Eagles in playoff contention.

This was a close game throughout but Brockport had the lead almost the entire game except at one point with 5:54 remaining in the game, 2 free throws by Frankie Kelly put Oneonta up by a 42-41 margin. It was their only lead and it lasted for all of 25 seconds until Patrick Modzelewski buried a 3 pointer to make it 44-42. After the teams traded baskets Modzelewski nailed another one from downtown and the lead was 49-43 with under 3 minutes left and the Red Dragons could never catch up. The key play was a layup and 1, by the Golden Eagles Clifton Lyerly, after Oneonta had pulled to within a single point at 49-48. Lyerly's layup made it 51-48 but he missed the free throw and  Modzelewski got the rebound for Brockport. Levi Pace scored seconds later on another layup for the Eagles and it was now a 5 point lead again with 1:15 left. Oneonta got it down to 1 again but Brockport hit 3 of 4 from the line to slam the door shut on the Red Dragons.

Patrick Modzelewski with 16 points and 7 rebounds to lead Brockport. Clifton Lylerly with 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Levi Pace had 12 points and 9 rebounds also. Aaron White had 10 points and Matt Smith had 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 points.

Mikey McElroy with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Oneonta. Lawrence Coleman with 13 points and Frankie Kelly with 11.

Brockport at 8-6 in 5th place while Oneota sits in 6th by virtue of the tiebreakers they own at 8-7.

Buffalo State 105 Fredonia 77

I had the Bengals winning by an 87-67 margin. I guess both teams decided not to play defense. I didn't count on that. The Bengals were merciful though as they put the Blue Devils away quickly by opening up a 24-10 lead afterjust 7minutes of play. The rest of the game was just a matter of how many points would be scored, would the Bengals hit the century mark, and how large would the margin of victory be. The largest lead was 32 points on several occasions and every single Buff State player broke int the scoring column.

Lovell Smith with 20 points, Chris Cartwright with 17 points and 10 assists, Rod Epps with 16 points and Larry Rivers with 10 to lead the Bengals.

Ian Helps with 18 points and 7 rebounds for Fredonia.

Bengals stay in 4th place at 10-6 and will be on the road next weekend to face New Paltz and then Oneonta. One win win clinch a playoff spot.

Oswego State 83 Potsdam 55

I had this one an 80-61 Oswego win so I wasn't too far off.

Oswego let Potsdam have its moment then slammed the door on the Bears in the final 10 minutes of the 1st half. Wuth 8 minutes gone in the 2nd half the margin was 20 points and the Lakers eased to the finish line.

Walter Sampson with 21 points, Brian Sortino with 15 and Rashawn Powell with 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The Bears got 14 points from Rashawd Hendricks along with a team high 7 rebounds. Zac Adams was next with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Lakers improve to 11-4 as they tune up for their big battle with the Cardinals today.

Four games on tap for today including what may turn out to be the biggest game of the SUNYAC regular season.
Not much time so just some quick picks.

Plattsburgh State        Oswego State        2:00 PM The Big One... Nuff Said

Cards the underdogs by a slim 2 points  and their record in back to back road games isn't good as they usually win on Friday and lose on Saturday...but my heart is on my sleeve so I'm taking the Cards even though logic and conventional wisdom says that Oswego should prevail. Plattsburgh 74 Oswego 71

New Paltz State  at  Brockport State        2:00 PM

Golden Eagles are 5 point favorites and they win by a 72-66 final.

Oneonta State     at    Geneseo State          2:00 PM

Geneseo a slight edge here by 4 points and they should be able to cover that spread here at home. Oneonta drops another tough one 69-64.

Potsdam State  at  Cortland State        2:00 PM

Simply put the Red Dragons cannot afford to lose this game. They are favored by an 18 point margin but I think that's too many. Cortland 76 Potsdam 64.

Can anyone pull up live stats for Oneonta/Geneseo? It says the game between Geneseo and Oswego will be in 3 days????
