Oswego cracks the top 25

http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/men/2015-16/week1

Geneseo also gets votes.  Other East teams .. St John Fisher is ranked #10 and Geneseo also got votes as did Hobart!!!

Don't forget NYU is considered an East team... but don't get me started. :)

Oops. You are right Dave. I forgot #19 NYU. I guess I was trying to figure our how Hobart beat beat Scranton, and then Hobart loses to Buffalo State by 20. Each team has 1 loss but Scranton is ranked ahead of Hobart and Hobart is ranked ahead of Buff State (who doesn't get a single  vote)  >:(.  Maybe its strength of schedule or just the fact that we haven't caught any voters eye. :(   (yet)

BTW good show, although the first 55 seconds had me thrown off because I didn't think my sound was working!!   :-[

Dave 'd-mac' McHugh

LOL sorry about the first 55 seconds... was that live or On Demand - because I haven't gone back to fix that on YouTube :)

And thanks... we are trying to find our groove this season.

For the record... you pretty much explained why the only team I put on my ballot this week from the East Region was St. John Fisher. HOWEVER, I meant to include Oswego State, but apparently lost that written note between Sunday night and Monday afternoon when I voted. I mean... I only considered 50 or so teams. LOL

Magicman....a little off topic here.  Your state schools...as well as private schools has been beating on the poor NESCAC teams.  Expect the schools in upper NY to be good in ice hockey.  Amherst's took a pounding by Elmira 6-3 in hockey...then goes to Nazareth in Rochester's suburbs and barely tied the small college in OT.  Now this Friday, I see that the Amherst men's soccer team is meeting a SUNY school in the Final 4!  Thought the the talent was in Football...not Fubul on a pitch! :)  Amherst's coaches seek talent around the World ....could save Cash and just head to the Empire State! ;D
May give you a call later in the week to check what are Amherst's chances on advancing.  Let me know on the MBB board....really confuse the posters...one way or other....know you are a busy man.

amh63,

I had to watch the NESCAC schools beat up our "State" schools often enough, so that when we get a chance to return the favor it just evens things up...a bit.

Last year Trinity ended our Men's Hockey season when they beat us in the NCAA tournament. Amherst, Williams and Middlebury also beat the Cards last year in hockey. (Although the Amherst game officially was a tie) And twice in the past few years Amherst has beaten the Cardinals in Men's basketball in the NCAA tournament. Just recently Bowdoin beat the Cardinal Men's soccer team 1-0 in the NCAA's when they scored the only goal of the game with 15 seconds left to play. That one was a real heartbreaker.

NESCAC also got 2 National Champions in the spring with the Tufts Men winning the lacrosse title and the Tufts women taking home the softball championship

Maybe this year it will be our turn. One of the coaches I speak with on occasion, mentioned to me a few months ago, that he thought, with the price of higher education continuing to escalate, that more student athletes were going to choose State schools because of the cost factor. We shall see.

At any rate some plus results on the state schools' side of the ledger. Last Friday the Plattsburgh State Men's hockey team 8-0, and ranked #2 in the country beat Middlebury 5-4 and on Saturday beat Norwich 6-5 to capture the Championship of the Great Northern Shootout in Norwich.

The same weekend our Women's hockey team, the defending National Champions and ranked #1 in the nation won the Panther/Cardinal classic in Middlebury by beating Wisconsin-Stevens Point, 5-1 on Saturday and Gustavus Adolphus, 5-3 on Sunday. The Cardinals who are now 9-0 are trying for their 3rd consecutive National Championship. They have won a school record 20 straight games dating back to February of last season. Their record since the beginning of the 2012-13 season is a phenomenal  90-4-5.

The Plattsburgh Woman's basketball team just recently won their own Cardinal Classic championship by defeating the #7 ranked (at the time) Bowdoin Polar Bears by a 67-60 final score. Plattsburgh is currently 3-0 and that win boosted them into Others Receiving Votes category of the D3hoops Top 25 at #41. The Cardinals will face a tough stretch starting December 12th when they travel to Middlebury and then after the holiday break, take on Tufts and then Wesleyan in the Springfield/Naismith Classic at Springfield, Mass.

The Men's basketball team will match up against Middlebury on December 12th and then after the holidays will host last year's regular season NESCAC champ Trinity College.

The Cortland State Red Dragons did win the National Championship in baseball this past May and the Red Dragon Ladies won the National Championship in lacrosse in that same month. So that's a couple in our column.

The Cortland State football team won the Empire 8 conference this year beating the likes of private schools, Ithaca, Alfred and St. John Fisher to name a few. They won a first round NCAA game and then had to face powerhouse Linfield where they gave a good account of themselves before falling 38-22.

That brings us to this coming weekend when your Amherst Lord Jeffs will meet the Oneonta State Red Dragons in the NCAA semifinals. The game is Friday night December 4th at 6:00 PM in Kansas City. There will be video available for this game presented by the NCAA. The other semifinal game between Loras and Calvin College will take place on or about 8:30.

Oneonta,19-3-1 has advanced to the National Semifinals for the 3rd time in the past 5 years, which is quite an impressive feat by itself. This marks the 6th straight year the Red Dragons have played in the NCAA's. They will be looking to advance to the championship game having lost in the semis  in 2014 and 2011. I thought that Oneonta's defense and in particular their goalkeeper, Vincent Pellegrino, was outstanding, as they have registered 9 straight shutouts. The Red Dragons have now gone 828 minutes without allowing a goal and have only given up a total of 9 goals all year.  Oneonta has scored 53 goals in 23 games for a 2.3 gpg average.

Amherst is coming off an exceptional season with a 17-1-1 mark. Amazingly, their 1 loss was to one of the lower ranked NESCAC teams in the first round of the conference tournament and so they did not win the NESCAC championship to get the conference's automatic bid. The tie on their record was the game before that against another middle of the pack NESCAC team, Trinity.

This is the 10th year in a row that Amherst has made the NCAA tournament. They, like Oneonta, have advanced to the National semifinals twice in those years, in 2008 and 2011. Both times the LJ's came up empty in those games. So this time one of these 2 programs will make it to the championship game.

The Lord Jeffs will counter with their own hot goalkeeper who will take a back seat to no one. Thomas Bull, in goal for every one of the 19 games Amherst has played, shuts down the opposition perhaps better than anyone in the country. He has only allowed 4 goals all year long. That's 15 shutouts in 19 games.  Now that's mind-boggling. The LJ's have scored 43 goals in 19 games for an almost identical gpg average as Oneonta at 2.26.

This will be an interesting game and could go to overtime. The irresistible force meeting the immovable object. Hard to pick a winner here. The one common opponent these teams have is Williams College. Amherst beat Williams 2-1 in double overtime at Williams, while the Red Dragons lost to Williams 2-0 also at Willytown.
Hard to read much into that since soccer is a game where so many factors come into play, especially lucky bounces, weather, and penalty kicks. Oneonta's losses came early in the season when they were 3-2-1 after 6 games and then went 16-1 the rest of the way with their only loss being a 1-0 setback to NCAA qualifier Plattsburgh State. Amherst was perfect all season long and then stumbled a bit near the end with the tie in their final regular season game and the loss following that in the playoffs.

No predictions here as my crystal ball is very cloudy. I will, of course, be rooting for the Red Dragons to make it to the championship game and will wager a  fine dinner with my friend from D. C. that, if we ever meet, I will buy if the LJ's win and you will do likewise if the Red Dragons walk off the field victorious. ;D

On demand and no problem. I'm hoping that this year the east will be a "beast". Clearly Fisher is the cream of the crop right now! We play Oswego Saturday afternoon so I'm hoping that our best is yet to come. Keep up the good work!!!!

The Magic 1 is never too busy to talk about NY state schools. Especially those in the final 4! Its good to know that half of the final 4 come from the northeast!

The Magicman comes through.  I just learned a heck of a lot about the other sports teams in the 'Yac!!

I looked into my crystal ball and I have a feeling a fellow from DC with the amh63 moniker will be the next person to post on this board.

Magicman....thanks for the response and the free "lecture"....well worth the price of a meal.  Your  glove is picked up.
If your Red Dragons win....thought Cortland St. has that mascot.....I will send you the money for a Dinner for Two at a place of your choice.  I'm sure your wife knows where to go :).   I have made a offer for our Midd fans when they come to Amherst....but it is hard with the schedules, etc.....thus the nature of my offer to you.

No you can't do that. The dinner bet is only acceptable if we get to enjoy each others company.

And our conference is spread out so far around New York State we needed 2 Red Dragons to cover the territory so Oneonta and Cortland both applied for the job. :D

Not even my crystal ball could foresee that said player, Mr. Marmelejos, who had a grand total of 13 made 3 pointers in his 24 prior games in a Buffalo State uniform, would erupt like Mount Vesuvius and pour in 10 bombs in one night. And don't anybody with the Bengals name in their moniker or anyone affiliated with Buffalo State hoops, try and tell me that they saw this outburst coming either. Cause if they do, their nose is gonna grow and their pants will catch fire.

Young Mr. Marmelejos would be well served to retrace his steps for the entire 24 hour period leading up to this game and write them down. He has apparently hit upon some "magic" formula and as this prestidigitator has learned over the years, leave nothing to chance, because if you find a system that works, then stick with it.

Congratulations to Kevin for breaking Jake's record. 8-) I watched Jake on video the night he buried his 9 triples against my Cardinals on 1-21-2012 ( we learned from that...he only got 7 against us 2 weeks later). Tonight I managed to see about half of those 10 3's. I was a bit surprised that when Kevin got that offensive rebound late in the first half he didn't do a heat check and dribble out to the 3 point line and fire up another one. Why spoil things by making a measley 2 point putback. ???  Nice to see Kevin didn't play favorites...he was 5x7 from long distance in the first half and 5x7 from long distance in the 2nd half. Someday, someone make break his record, but I bet they won't match his synchronicity. ;D

I suppose this record setting performance makes Kevin a leading candidate for the next SUNYAC Player of the Week award. Back to back Bengals to start the year? I would have bet against that. :o

How did the Magic 1 know?

                                                                                                              From SUNYAC WEBSITE

MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Kevin Marmolejos (SR)
Buffalo State, Guard (Woodhaven, NY/Beach Channel)
Kevin Marmolejos scored a career-high 32 points as he led Buffalo State to a 98-78 victory over previously undefeated Hobart on Tuesday. The senior guard set a school single-game record with 10 3-pointers, going 10 of 14 from long range. Marmolejos scored the Bengals' first 15 points, going 5 of 5 from 3-point range in the opening 6:27 of the game, giving Buffalo State a 15-4 lead it would never relinquish. He also finished the game with four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Hmmmmmm   Can we get 3 in a row?  Mike Henry??  Jordan Glover???  Lovell Smith (oops he's out injiured)!!

Go BENGALS

magicman

Congratulations to Kevin Marmelejos for his first Player of the Week award. And to the Bengals for back to back winners.

I was kind of hoping there might be co-winners of the weekly award. I know Kevin had a big night and set the record for 3's by a Buff State player but Plattsburgh State's  Kyle Richardson had a pretty big night also with his career highs of 36 points and 15 rebounds against Skidmore. Either one of those stats is a pretty good day at the office but to get a double-double of that magnitude is certainly Player of the Week honors. He'll have to be happy with the magicman's Co-Player of the Week honors.

Five games on the agenda for the SUNYAC tonight as North Country and Central New York rivals face off in their annual battles.

Cortland State  at  Ithaca        6:00 PM

This annual battle between central New York rivals could be a good game to take in tonight as both teams are off to a good start. The hoops version of the Cortaca Jug has been tilted toward the Red Dragons recent;y as they have won 4 straight in this series  to go along with their 6 straight wins on the gridiron. The Bombers may have a lot to say about that this year as they seem to have a quality product and hope to start a winning streak of their own to match the 5 straight games they won between 2005 and 2010. Cortland has a 3-0 record but hasn't been tested as none of those opponents possessed a winning record. Utica College did give them a scare as the Red Dragons dug themselves a big hole and had to overcome a double digit Pioneer lead. Cortland was still down by 7 points with 2:32 left in the game and managed to right the ship and come away with an 87-85 victory. Ithaca opened the season with a solid 90-84 win over the reigning Liberty League champion Skidmore Thoroughbreds. They followed that with a loss at always tough Scranton before defeating the same 2 teams Cortland did in the recent Cortaca Classic Tournament. The point spread favors the Red Dragons but only by a single point effectively making this game a pick em. I, of course will pick the Red Dragons in a barnburner, by a 75-72 final score.

Potsdam State  at   Clarkson   7:00 PM

These two teams went at it just 10 days ago with the Golden Knight downing Potsdam 66-60 on the Bears home court. Today they hit the hardwood in Clarkson's Alumni Gym and the Knights are favored by 14 points. Potsdam, 0-4, still looking for that initial win and this is one of their rare chances to get it. Clarkson only 2-5, will also find the going tough this year after losing so much to graduation. This may be a chance for Potsdam to break into the win column but my crystal ball, admittedly a bit cloudy after all that Thanksgiving turkey still sees the Knights winning on their home court...but not by 14 points. Clarkson 68 Potsdam 63.

St. Lawrence  at  Plattsburgh State      7:30 PM

D3hoops has this game listed as an 8:00 PM start, but both schools show it as a 7:30 start. The women from SLU will take on the Cardinal ladies at 5:30 so unless they go to OT this game should start on time. Plattsburgh has been on the long end of the score in this series for the last 6 meetings. That is probably the longest winning streak in this rivalry, at least in the magicman's lifetime. The last 3 meetings have all been double digit wins by the Cardinals but I will be surprised if that is the case tonight. St. Lawrence has been an up and down team this season as they hung with #25 Oswego State in their opening game losing by a 73-67 margin. THye then were blown out by Brockport State by an 81-57 score. They dropped a close game to a decent Medaille team and then defeated, Middlebury by a 63-57 margin. The Panthers almost always give the Cardinals a tough time so I think any team that can beat Middlebury will pose a challenge to Plattsburgh. The Cardinals handled the Saints rival Clarkson rather easily to open the season, but were themselves handled rather easily by Skidmore last week. The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a 9 point favorite but the Cardinals will have to play a much better brand of basketball than what I witnessed last week to win by that margin. I think they play better but will still make enough mistakes to keep this one close. Plattsburgh wins by a 73-69 final.

Oneonta State  at Hartwick        8:00 PM

The Hawks have owned the Red Dragons recently as they have a 5 game winning streak against the Red Dragons and have won 7 of the last 9 games. Hartwick opened the season with a bad 20 point loss to a Union team that is 1-3. Then most recently, they played a solid game against Eastern Connecticut losing by a 93-87 margin. In between they  have posted 3 wins over mediocre competition. Oneonta has only played 2 games and with a little luck could be 2-0 but dropped a tough overtime decision at Franklin & Marshall. The point spread favors the Hawks in this game but only by a slim 3 points. Hartwick returned 4 starters from last year's team that beat the Red Dragons by  11 points at Oneonta's house. I think they will hold court in their house. I hope I'm wrong about this one but I think Hartwick will pull out an 82-76 win.

Alfred  at  Fredonia    7:30 PM

This game is not listed on the D3hoops schedule but again both teams are showing it so I'm assuming it will be played.

The Saxons are 4-1 and hung with Geneseo, only losing by an 81-78 final score. Fredonia is 0-5 and hasn't been close in any of those losses. They certainly aren't as good as Geneseo so i don't see much hope for them here. The point spread has them listed as a 13 point underdog. I think they will lose by that much..at least. Alfred wins by an 80-68 final score.
