What a difference a day makes... :D.!! After a devastating loss  :'( yesterday to Cortland, my beloved BENGALS  come back today with a "quality" win vs #25 Oswego! And while this means nothing more than just a win, my boys sure could use this "shot in the arm" after yesterdays buzzer beater loss.

I must admit at half time there were many who were wondering if Buff State was out of their funk yet. A season low 23 point on 27.9 % shooting, at halftime,  is not a way to beat Oswego (who was up 32-23). However Jordan Chateau "J. C". decided that after scoring only 5 pts and snatching 5 rebounds vs. Cortland, it was time to step up. And step up he did!! 22 pts, 9 rebounds and 1 block is the kind of performance that many of the BENGAL faithful had come to expect from J.C.. And he delivered.  :)

Add Lovell Smiths double-double (17 points and 11 boards), Mike Henry's "near" double -double (10 boards and 9 pts), Nico McLeans  9 pts, 8 rebounds and 4 steals and Jordan Glover's 8 pts and 4 steals, and you have a starting unit that accounted for all but 1 point in this "must win" game. And after Buff State was outscored by 9 in the 1st half , they turned it around and held Oswego to 19% shooting in the 2nd half and nearly doubled Oswegos pts (43-24)

A 1-1 weekend, against 2 of the top tier SUNYAC teams, is not what BENGAL faithful had in mind Friday morning...but we'll take it. Alfred U. (4-1) is next up this Saturday. BENGALS are gonna have to do better if they want that "W". Here's to hoping that T.B.I.Y.T.C. (the best is yet to come)!! ;)

GO BENGALS!!

Cortland whippersnappers crack Fredonia 70-46, at Magicman's urging. A blowout actually featuring the RDragons' deep roster. Bench leads the first half pullaway, particularly 3-point shooting of fr A. McGuire. Corts 15x26fg, 6x11 at intermission. Sixteen Cortlands in action, 12 score. B. Estarfaa 13 pts in 21', McGuire 10 pts (3x5 3s) in 21'. G. Carter also plays 21' -- the most of any Dragon. Wind up 23x52fg, 8x22 3s, 16x23ft, 14 trnvrs. Freds play tired ....17x53fg, 4x20 3s, 8x17ft, 20 trnvrs. Never in this game in dropping to 1-7 overall. Cortland 5-1 and home Wednesday vs. Elmira

This is more in tune with what I expected from the Red Dragons back on opening day. Had I seen this kind of balance and domination, my placement of this team, in my pecking order of YAC teams, surely would have been a few notches higher.

When I saw your opening sentence "Cortland whippersnappers crack Fredonia" I thought you were doing a take off of this quote of mine, from late Friday evening, that I made over on the posting board to the members  of the D3 Men's National Pick Em League that I belong to. 11 of us picked Buffalo State to win that game, while 3 players had Cortland. This was the post:

Quote from: magicman on December 04, 2015, 09:56:16 PM
Big John, Mr Y and the Express were the beneficiaries of that 3 pointer by Cortland at the buzzer. The other 11 of us are cursing that young whipper sniper. ::) :P

Then I thought for a moment and said to myself...No jdex would have no reason to visit that board. His whippersnappers quote must have come from this post I made on Saturday at 12:30 PM. because he did say "at magicman's urging".

Quote from: magicman on December 05, 2015, 12:31:35 PM
The oddsmakers have made the Red Dragons an 11 point favorite. Ten days ago that spread would have been 20 points. I'm taking Cortland because they have too much talent for the Blue Devils, but Coach Spanbauer better crack the whip and keep this team focused. Cortland wins this one 82-69.

Say it ain't so....Champ. ???

Friday's game against Cortland State...attendance...1204... Bengals lose 84-83

Saturday's game against undefeated and current YAC Champ Oswego...attendance.215... Bengals win 66-56

Several observations:

1.  You lose 1 stinking game...a barnburner no less, on a last second dagger and your fans turn fairweather and desert you. :o

2.  Bengals don't play well in front of large crowds.

Here's a post I made early Friday morning on the Undefeated and Winless board, regarding our annual contest, to hopefan, who had Oswego as his undefeated team this year.

I'll be more than happy to get through my own death-maze this weekend, as my winless Chatham team takes on equally winless W&J, and my undefeated Lakers of Oswego have a very tough road game at Buffalo State... sweatin' blood droplets....
hopefan,
If Buffalo State's leading scorer, Lovell Smith is still sitting, because of an injury he received in the first game of the season, you could be OK. If he's healthy, I think the Lakers go down on Saturday afternoon.

I looked like a prestidigitator of the highest order when I made that bold statement, as the Lakers did go down, and Lovell Smith certainly had a lot to do with that, by scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 boards. His back to back buckets with less than 3 minutes left in the game pushed the Bengal lead from 3 to 7 points and sealed the deal for Buffalo State.

I looked like I had egg on my face, however, with this statement from that same post:

Quote from: magicman on December 04, 2015, 07:21:41 AM
Buffalo State has a lot of talent and depth this year as the rotation is 10 deep, so it wouldn't surprise me if they upset the applecart and win the SUNYAC.

The Bengals scored 66 points in the game against Oswego...65 of em by the starters and 1 POINT BY THE BENCH.   Earlier, on Saturday evening,  I was discussing the outcome of the Ithaca-St. Lawrence game with my favorite coach and remarking on the 88-78 win by the Saints over the Bombers. I was looking at the box score and I said to the coach, "Ithaca scored 78 points tonight and their bench had a grand total of 2 points. Not often you see that in a box score. We both thought that was rather amazing. Little did we know that those 2 points were TWICE AS MANY as the Bengal bench would get against the Lakers. I mention the Bengal's depth and it becomes non-existent.

So now you see me...now you don't. ::)  I went from the top to the bottom with those 2 quotes. ;D

I think our newest poster was trying to create a false illusion for me here, with the bolded part of this message.

I agree with all magicman's predictions this afternoon except the Oneonta Red Dragons will pull this one out at home.
They are battle tested tough and this Senior laden team will pull out the victory. Look out for Lawrence Coleman to have a monster game.
I heard Mike McElroy has a bruised thigh and will sit this one out.
Enjoy the games.

I responded with this comment...note the bolded part:

Also glad to hear that Mikey McElroy's injury isn't serious. I thought maybe the coaching staff held him out of the Potsdam game so he could play against us.

From Saturday's Oneonta-Plattsburgh box score. So who led the Red Dragons in points, along with game honors in rebounds, notching a double-double of 18 points and 13 boards? You guessed it.... that injured, probable missing person. Be sure and note the 37 minutes he played. Probably limped around the court throughout the entire game. ???  I'm :o  Also trying to figure out how Mikey had 6 personal fouls? Is that a Red Dragon special feature?

We Cardinal fans feel better knowing we got the Red Dragons best lineup, but also know that Oneonta beat us in our house last year and how quickly ones fortunes can change in the SUNYAC. I'm sure when the Red Dragons invade Plattsburgh on February 5th they will have a few dufflebags full of revenge loaded on that bus with them. For now, however, I hope the guys can wrap their heads around a win against Williams on Wednesday. Always nice to get a win against the NESCAC conference. We owe them a few beatings, especially after soccer season, with Bowdoin beating Plattsburgh, and Amherst beating Oneonta in the NCAA's.

I'm only as good as the information I'm given. I told you I was new at the posts and certainly can't compete with a legend like yourself.
I learned my lesson to never go against the Legends information or picks in the future :).
Very Impressed with Plattsburgh and Kyle Richardson is a STUD. Sorry i didn't get to see him that much last year when we played you.
This kid will compete for POY and Coach Curle has a great group of players around him.
Plattsburgh will definitely compete for the SUNYAC Championship THIS SEASON.

Magicman....wanted to point out something that happened to me while surfing the CAC games yesterday.  My comments also on the CAC board.  I tried to check in on the Hamilton game at Vasser and the Middlebury game at Skidmore.  I had trouble getting the webcasts as it seemed to me that both private host schools wanted some kind of payment!   I asked Vandy74 about it since he posted wrt the Midd lost.  I am aware you attended the Skidmore game.
Oh by the way...your WBB team must be very good.  Did they not beat Bowdoin?....well the lady Bears won big over Tufts yesterday...very highly ranked Jumbos!

The leading candidates for the SUNYAC Player of the Week.

Kyle Richardson from Plattsburgh State and Justin Ringen from Geneseo State

I added to a previous post to update the 3 game totals for both players. These were clearly the 2 dominant performances for the week.

You would think that a night's work of 30 points and 18 rebounds along with an earlier game of another double-double might get that player a SUNYAC Player of the Week award. But for Kyle Richardson his big game Friday night to lead all the SUNYAC players might not be enough. On Tuesday he put up 15 points  and 12 rebounds against St. Lawrence in a 77-65 Cardinal victory and factor that with Friday night's output and that should get you some League recognition. Cards are 2-0 in those 2 games.

On Saturday afternoon Kyle continued his outstanding week as Plattburgh traveled to Oneonta and came away with an 85-67 road win over the Red Dragons, which left the Cardinals tied with those other Red Dragons from Cortland atop the SUNYAC standings with a 2-0 record. Plattsburgh finished the week with a record of 3-0 to improve to 4-1 overall.  Kyle's stat line for the Oneonta game was 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists. 3 steals and 2 blocks. He was 9x15 from the field and 4x7 from the line in 31 minutes. His 3 game totals are listed below.

Geneseo's Justin Ringen, put up back to back games of 30 points on Wednesday and Friday against Nazareth and Roberts Wesleyan. Knights went 1-1 in those 2 games but Justin hit a game winning 3 pointer with a guy right on him to beat Nazareth in the first round of the Wendy's Classic.

On Saturday Justin and the Knights defeated RIT to win the 3rd place slot in the final Wendy's College Classic Tournament to be held. Justin had 21 points, 7 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals. He was 8x13 from the field and 5x9 from 3 point range. He had no free throw attempts and played 37 minutes.  Geneseo finished 2-1 in the tournament  and Justin's 3 game totals are as follows:

Justin's stats: 81 pts, 19 reb, 10 assists, 3 steal, 1 block. 29x50 fg, 14x21 3's, 9x10 ft. 109 mins' out of 120.
Teams record for week 2-1....3 non-conference games

Kyle's stat's: 67 pts, 39 reb, 7 assists, 7 steals, 6 blocks. 25x45 fg, 2x7 3's, 15x23 ft. 105 mins. out of 120.
Teams record for week 3-0....2 conference games

Justin has 14 more points than Kyle. Kyle has 20 more rebounds than Justin. Justin leads in assists, while Kyle leads in steals and blocks. I vote them as co-players of the week. Both of these outstanding performances deserve recognition.

I've been told that  there probably won't be co-players of the week. I've also been told that in the case of 2 players, who both had outstanding weeks, then the player who played on the team with the better winning record almost always gets the award. That was why last week Kyle's 36 point, 15 rebound effort against Skidmore failed to gain him Player of the Week honors, when Buff State's Kevin Marmolejos went off for 32 points against Hobart, by nailing a school record, 10 three pointers in 14 attempts. I thought both of those games were award worthy, but the Buffalo State player was chosen over Kyle  because his team won the game and Plattsburgh lost their game. So if that is the case, then a 3-0 record trumps a 2-1 record so Kyle should get this week's Player of the Week Award. We shall see.

I still think both players should share this coming week's award. We may not see 2 overall weekly efforts this good for the rest of the season.

It's hard to get reliable information sometimes. And I knew you were giving me an honest opinion of that info. I just couldn't resist pulling your leg.

I'm only a legend in my own mind, not in my own time. ??? And you will do just fine posting on these boards.

Plattsburgh State is a work in progress. Kyle Richardson is not. Kyle could have started on just about any team in the country last year, but as a newcomer to Plattsburgh State (he transferred in with 2 years of eligibility) he joined a team that was a senior dominated squad. With 6 seniors and 2 juniors that had been with the program since the beginning, Coach Curle explained to him that he wouldn't be starting because of that depth and commitment to the program those players had made. Kyle accepted the fact that he would be coming off the bench all year and did an outstanding job in that role. He averaged nearly as many minutes as some starters and was the 2nd leading rebounder on the team and 7th leading scorer at 6.2 ppg. I knew he was an explosion waiting to happen and it's been fun to see that come to fruition so far this season. He had 10 points and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes last year when you visited Plattsburgh. He doubled those numbers yesterday. ;D And he is certainly in the mix for POY, but I'll be happy if he makes All Conference.

The Cardinals have a great group of young players as Coach Curle had to bring in a large class of newcomers to replace all the players we lost through graduation. They will get better as they learn the ropes of college ball, especially on the defensive end. Always harder to get freshman to learn good defense. In high school they usually play against teams that have a few good players. In college you play against teams that have all good players on the floor at the same time. That's the biggest adjustment, defense.

We hope to make the playoffs. Once you get in the playoffs, well, any one of those 6 teams can win 3 games in a row. Look how many times an 8 seed or 6 seed has won the crown over the years. I know Plattsburgh has done it twice from being a 6 seed and a 4 seed I think it was and Brockport has done it as an 8th seed. By mid February the freshman in our rotation will be better equipped to handle crunch time under stress. What started out as a rebuilding year, has turned into a year of hope, that we can still compete for a chance to win the YAC's automatic NCAA bid.

I seriously doubt that "fairweather" would describe our BENGAL  fans. I honestly believe that it was a combination of 4 factors.

1 - Cortland faces Buff State in every sport that Buff State has. Both football teams (which Oswego doesnt play) was very competitive in the Empire 8 this year, plus Buff State upset the then ranked, and un-defeated,Cortland Red Dragons on October 10th at Coyer field. There is a genuine dislike for the Red Dragons (CSU style) at Buff State. In fact last year the game vs Cortland on 2/6 (Friday) drew 1,200 people (a 60-54 win). The next day my BENGALS beat Oswego by 4, 80-76, in front of 155 people!. No fairweather just a serious dislike of dragons on Elmwood. I remeember 1 year some fans had a big poster of a Bengal tiger having "his way" with a Red DRagon (I'll leve it at that).Campus Ssecurity made them remove the poster pretty much as soon as it was revealed. But no 1 forgot that poster....No 1!!!   ;D

It could also be......

2 - ....the "hangover" effect. Kevin Marmelejos, the current SUNYAC P.O.W.  ( who BTW did not play at all in the 2nd half due to illness) "reportedly" told a coach, during the game, that the low crowd was due to everyone having hangovers from Friday nights post game activities! He said that the Elmwood ave clubs/bars/restaurants were packed Friday night after the game. The crowd  at "Coles" restaurant/bar (I believe that's where your boys eat at when they come to Buffalo), actually spilled out into the streets. I have no doubt that a good number of the Cortland game fans thoroughly enjoyed the experience of what I can only describe as 1 of the best games that I have seen at Buff State in 8 years ( and I have been to every home game over the past 8 years). There was a ton of drama at 1300 Elmwood Friday night. The last 10 mins of the game saw campus security actually walk to the floor, draw a rope across the front of the student body section, as a preventive, in case Buff State pulled off game winner (I've never seen the  "armed" campus security do that a any event at Buff State before). Add to that the fact that when Cortland's J.P. Reagan hit the game winner, he was less than 5 feet from the student section. When the Cortland team ran onto the court and mobbed Reagan, they actually wound up on the lap of the students in the front row (and campus security). Heck i'm betting that that crowd will be the largest crowd at ANY SUNYAC game during the regular season this year (as I believe the Cortland game last year was also the largest of any regular season 'Yac game).

or it could have been.........

3 - ....."Damn, I just cant take another game like that. My heart can't take it"....  Heck, thats what I said when I went home Friday night. However my wife insisted that I, take my high blood pressure medicine, eat some oatmeal and get back out there Saturday for the Oswego game. And you taught me that a "Happy wife...Is a Happy life"!! ;) Sooo I followed Kim's advice (and yours). Others might not have had a loved 1 to encourage them to return Saturday afternoon (and it was a beautiful day, weather wise,  in Buffalo by the way) and chance some more stress. I'm glad that I did.

Lastly it could have been....

4 - ..."Hero Certified burgers".  Friday night those folks set up a table at the Sports arena, inside the gym, and gave away free burgers for the entire basketball game. I mean "FREE BURGERS" for showing up and supporting your team. Great promo. I wanted 1 but wasn't willing to leave my seat and stand in line for 20 mins to get 1! Can you say "awkward"!! ;D

Trust me, Buff State has the BEST fans in the SUNYAC/East. Period...end of story.  ;)

As far as Lovell and our bench strength, you already have my thoughts on that from last night. The kid, "Vell",  is a difference maker and being around kids like him, Jordan Glover, Mike Henry, Jordan Chateau and others is a joy. Just a plain joy. Good damn kids (dont let me get started, I get emotional !!  :'( :-X ).Makes you want to go to the gym to support them every day. I believe that you have met Jordan before, and if not I'm sure that you will. Something tells me that you may have even met Lovell and/or Nico. If not then I'm gonna drop a bug in their ear, that they stop by the "Music Shop" and meet the "Magic 1",  during their Jan 8th northbound journey, and maybe even spend a couple of $$. Or ask 1 of my favorite coaches to call you when they get to their "shoot around" at Plattsburgh and have you stop by for a min.! Mark my words....Kyle Richardson/Lovell Smith/Nico McLean will be 3 of the top 10 vote-getters for SUNYAC player of the year at the end of the season. [I'm gonna save this post  ;).]

Well I said to say it ain't so, and you sure did.  ;D

Didn't realize the hatred for the Red Dragons from football would spill over to hoops. Makes sense though. Still would have thought that more than 215 would show up for any game that the Bengals play, especially if you have a good team.

And when I made those statements about the attendance figures, I really thought that figure from the Lakers game was probably a misprint and I was just pulling your chain...who knew...it wasn't a misprint...go figure!

You're right, this  threesome... Kyle Richardson - Lovell Smith - Nico McLean will be All Conference selections and in the conversation for POY

Looking forward to the Bengals visit as usual.

Plattsburgh State 85 Oneonta State 67

This game was a closely contested affair for the first 12 minutes with several ties and lead changes that resulted in an 18-13  Red Dragon lead with 11 minutes left in the half. Plattsburgh's #1 long distance shooter Ed Correa , then scored 8 straight points on 3 jumpers, to fuel a 12-0 Cardinal run that gave them the lead at 25-18, with 7:21 remaining in the half. Plattsburgh would extend the lead on a pair of jumpers by freshman Isaiah Johnson, that were bookended by a pair of triples, one from Eli Bryant and one from Xavier Thomas.  A pair of free throws by Jon Patron, plus 1 more from Thomas, gave the Cardinals the biggest lead of the period with a 38-25 advantage and 3:13 left to play. The rest of the half was a sloppy affair with the teams combining for 8 turnovers, 4 fouls, and 7 missed shots, most of those by Oneonta, as the Cardinal only had 2 shot attempts in that span, making 1 and missing 1. Plattsburgh kept turning the ball over before they could get a shot attempt off. The Red Dragons went 2 for 8 in that stretch and went into the break down by 10 at 40-30.

Oneonta needed to cut that deficit after the break and they slowly kept chipping away, until a 3 pointer by Mikey McElroy brought them within 4 points at 50-46 with  12:16 remaining on the clock. A jumper by Correa, a 3 point play by Kyle Richardson, and another jumper by Isaiah Johnson quickly built the lead back to double digits with 10 minutes left in the game. The Red Dragons could never get it back to a two possession game the rest of the way. The lead would reach 19 on another inside move by Richardson and the Cards coasted home with the 85-67 win.

Kyle Richardson led Plattsburgh once more, with 22 points and 9 rebounds, just missing out on his 4th straight double -double. He added 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 blocks to round out his stat line for the afternoon. Kyle's big week gives him 12.2 rebounds per game and should make him one of the top ten rebounders in the nation in Division III when the NCAA updates their stats. He will also move into the top 50 in the country with his 22.6 points per game scoring average. Eddie Correa had 14 points and 5 rebounds as he was 3x4 from long distance. Point guard Zack Coleman, had 13 points,  7 rebounds and 2 assists, leading the Plattsburgh attack. And back up point guard Eli Bryant, with his court time increasing with every  game, had another solid outing with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in 24 minutes of action. Xavier Thomas and Isaiah Johnson both scored 8 points, while Magic Grigg came off the bench to grab 7 rebounds, with a basket and a block, in 12 minutes of playing time, with 6 of those boards coming on the offensive end.

Plattsburgh shot 29x63 (46%) from the field, 5x14 from beyond the arc (35.7%) and 22x37 (59.5%) from the foul line. They controlled the boards with a 48-36 edge there and committed 16 turnovers to 14 for Oneonta.

The Red Dragons got a big game from Mikey McElroy as he returned from the injury list and had a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Lawrence Coleman added 16 points and 4 rebounds. Jack Dignan had 13 points, 6 assists, 5 steals and 3 rebounds.

Oneonta was 23x61 from the field (37,7%), 3x19 from long distance (15.8%), and 18x26 from the line (69.2%)

Oneonta drops to 3-2 on the year, 1-1 in the SUNYAC. They return to action on Wednesday when they host the Williams College Ephs out of the NESCAC conference at 7:00 PM

Plattsburgh improves to 4-1 (2-0 in the YAC) and will now be off for a week until Saturday, December 12th when they will travel to Middlebury for the annual battle with their NESCAC rival at 4:00 PM. The Cards will be in first place in the conference until next year at the very least. Good job Cardinals

I hope that both YAC teams can handle their NESCAC foes as that will give the conference's SOS a boost.

I see it's now gone final, 5-0 today, after a 2-0 defeat yesterday. Hard to beat my Cardinals when the opponents can't score a single goal in 2 games...Just sayin.

Notice I even shortened your quote so your post doesn't show up in my post, so after you've deleted it no one will ever know it existed...except me, and like an elephant... I never forget. ;D
