Oneonta drops to 3-2 on the year, 1-1 in the SUNYAC. They return to action on Wednesday when they host the Williams College Ephs out of the NESCAC conference at 7:00 PM
Plattsburgh improves to 4-1 (2-0 in the YAC) and will now be off for a week until Saturday, December 12th when they will travel to Middlebury for the annual battle with their NESCAC rival at 4:00 PM. The Cards will be in first place in the conference until next year at the very least. Good job Cardinals
I hope that both YAC teams can handle their NESCAC foes as that will give the conference's SOS a boost.

2 games vs NESCAC, the #7 ranked conference (this week according to Massey)in the country!!!   I agree "O.W.M.1"  (O Wise Magic 1), that definitely create opportunity for our conferences strength to move up. Did someone say "Multiple NCAA bids" for the SUNYAC?? ;)

5 -0. I think that I'll just stick to 'Yac hoops. Anyone know how to delete an entire post??

The upper right hand corner of your post, there are 3 words there...quote, which you already know how to use...modify, which you can use to correct a mistake or a typo in your post as you have just modified your post...and last but not least...remove, which, when you click on it allows you to cancel a post as if it never existed....which I'm sure you'll want to do to get rid of that idle boast about beating a team of Cardinals from the North Country, that are currently tearing up the ice here in Plattsburgh. I see it's now gone final, 5-0 today, after a 2-0 defeat yesterday. Hard to beat my Cardinals when the opponents can't score a single goal in 2 games...Just sayin.

Notice I even shortened your quote so your post doesn't show up in my post, so after you've deleted it no one will ever know it existed...except me, and like an elephant... I never forget. ;D
Post???   :-[ What post??   5-0?? What on earth could you be talking about??? ::) 8-)

So you learned something new tonight. Good for you. The magicman...forever instructing so that the next generation will have the benefit of his knowledge. 8-)

Final Scores from December 5th

Rochester Tech 80  vs Geneseo State 91

As expected The Knights won this matchup and did so rather quickly. They were in front of the Tigers by a  15-1 score,  4 minutes and 23 seconds after the opening tip. They had leads of 12 to 19 points the rest of the way until the Tigers hit a closing 3 pointer to cut the lead to the final of 91-80. I had the Knights winning by an 83-73 final score so I was in the neighborhood with my MOV and total.

Justin Ringen led the Knights with 21 points, 7  rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. He was 8x13 from the field and 5 of 9 from long range. Justin's big week of 81 points in 3 games will leave him with a 24.1 ppg average, good enough to be ranked as one of the top 25 players in the country, when the NCAA updates their stats.

John Decker, after missing 2 games, came back on Friday with limited minutes against Roberts Wesleyan, and scored 8 points in that game with 18 minutes of floor time. On Saturday against RIT he played 27 minutes off the bench, more floor time than anyone except Ringen, and scored 18 points with 4 assists. He was 6x11 from the field and 3x6 from downtown. Ringen and Decker, two teammates from DII Dominican who transferred to Geneseo this year will instantly make the Knights a contender for the top prize in the YAC.

Nick Fessenden had 16 points and tied Ringen for the team high in rebounds with 7. Point guard Charlie Zaepfel has 14 points and 8 assists.

The Knights improve to 6-1 and are off until early January when they start conference play by hosting Fredonia on January 5th at 7:30 PM.

Brockport State 82  vs  Hobart 81

The Golden Eagles trailed Hobart for 29 minutes of this game and had to overcome an early 13 point deficit but they caught the Statesmen with 11:41 left in the game on a layup by Matthew Smith to tie the game at 52 and shortly after Hamed Shamseldin buried a 3 ball to give them a lead they never relinquished. Hobart kept it close but Port opened up a 7 point advantage on a layup by David Clark with 3:19 remaining and the Eagles had just enough gas in the tank to fly home with a win. After Smith hit 1 of 2 free throws with 3 seconds left to make it a 4 point 82-78 Brockport lead, the Statesmen got an uncontested 3 pointer at the buzzer to narrow the gap to a single point.

I had the Golden Eagles winning this game by an 84-76 final score, despite the fact that the National handicapper favored Hobart by 6 points. I missed the Eagles final total by only 2 points and would have only been 2 points off on Hobart's total if they hadn't hit that meaningless 3 pointer at the buzzer.

Hamed Shamseldin led the Golden Eagles and captured scoring honors with 22 points. He also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and was 3 for 7 from beyond the arc. Matt Smith had 17 points with 3 assists and 2 steals. Olusola Adeniran added 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Cordell Torres led Port with 7 rebounds while scoring 6 points.

The Golden Eagles are off until after Christmas when they will participate in a holiday tournament in Florida. They will take on Bridgewater State on Monday 12-28 at 5:00 PM, followed by a game against currently undefeated John Carroll (7-0) on Tuesday 12-29 at 1:00 PM. A coupleof wins there would help the SUNYAC's SOS.

Potsdam State 69  @  New Paltz State 54

The Bears finally get into the win column with an upset of the Hawks at New Paltz. I had New Paltz winning this one 72-60 but the double digit MOV would be in the Bears favor. At least I was close with my winning margin. Glad to be wrong on this game and hope the Bears can start a streak.

Potsdam jumped on the Hawks from the git-go as they has a double digit lead at 14-3 after 6 and a half minutes of playing time. The Hawks tried to catch up but could never get closer than two possessions. The Bears opened up their biggest lead of 14 points at 30-16 with 3 minutes left in the half  and went into the break up by a 33-23 margin.

Potsdam had more of the same in the 2nd period. After the Hawks closed to within 8 points on a pair of Keegan Donovan free throws with 16:48 left to play, the Bears got a 3 pointer from Joe Estramonte and a layup from Dante Langly to boost the lead back to 13 points. The Hawks would never see a single digit deficit again as the Bears lengthened their advantage to as much as 19 points and comfortably kept the Hawks at bay. I think it was the easiest win the Bears have had in over 3 years.

Dante Langly had 14 points and 7 rebounds to lead Potsdam. Josh Blagrove had 13 points and a game high 9 rebounds. Joe Estramonte had 13 points, while Vincent Smith had 8 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Nate Wyatte had 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 points and 2 steals.  Serigne Kane added 6 points and 7 rebounds in 13 minutes on the floor.

The Hawks got a big game from Nick Paquette, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 7 rebounds.  Keegan Donovan had 12 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block. RJ Rosa added 9 points and Alex Perlman grabbed 9 rebounds to lead the team in that category.

The Bears are now 1-6 (1-1 in the YAC) and will take on North Country rivals St. Lawrence on Saturday     12-12 at 4:00 PM . They will end 2015 by hosting SUNY-Canton the next day, 12-13, at 3:00 PM.

The Hawks fall to 1-6  (0-2) and host Springfield College on Tuesday, 12-8, at 8:00 PM for their final game of the semester.

Jdex...any reason why Oswego's Alex Rawa did not play Saturday at Buff State? Friday he was 2nd leading scorer vs Fredonia, and played 32 mins. Saturday, he warmed up but didn't step foot on the court!! ???

Good 1 Pg!!!!  Hopefully, for Rawa's sake, he may have just  been slightly injured or coaches decision (although that's hard to believe) is the reason why he didn't step on the floor. 2 games in less than 20 hours is never an easy deal, especially when your 1st game goes into overtime (B. Sortino layed all 45 mins vs Fredonia...not something that you see too often). Having gone to Fredonia at least once a year for the past 6 years, its not hard to imagine someone getting their drink on after a game. There's not much else to do down there but eat/drink and be merry (IMHO)! However I gotta believe that Leone runs a pretty tight ship at Oswego but hey....you never know! ;).  Just to be on the safe side, maybe I'll send a case of something to the Lakers, up at Max Zeil around the 5th of Feb ! :)

I am sure the coaches have a pretty tight seal on the players during the season, unlike raucous fans like myself  ;)

Anyone reading these boards for the past few days knows that I have been lobbying to have 2 players that just put up outstanding weeks, named as Co-Players of the Week for the SUNYAC award. The week that each of these guys had, may very well be, the two best efforts, the conference will see all year. One of them received the Player of the Week award on Monday. The other one got no recognition at all. And that's just not right.

Justin Ringen was the recipient of the 3rd SUNYAC Player of the Week award and he deserved it. Here is his stats from the past week:

Justin put up back to back games of 30 points on Wednesday and Friday against Nazareth and Roberts Wesleyan. Knights went 1-1 in those 2 games but Justin hit a game winning 3 pointer with a guy right on him to beat Nazareth in the first round of the Wendy's Classic. I saw that shot as it happened in real time and it was a dandy. 8-) I even had to do the play by play for Plattsburgh State's Coach Curle as he called me with several minutes remaining in that game to ask me if I was watching it because his computer had died and he wanted to know what was taking place. The magicman to the rescue...who you gonna call ...??  :D

On Saturday Justin and the Knights defeated RIT to win the 3rd place slot in the final Wendy's College Classic Tournament to be held. Justin had 21 points, 7 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals. He was 8x13 from the field and 5x9 from 3 point range. He had no free throw attempts and played 37 minutes.  Geneseo finished 2-1 in the tournament  and Justin's 3 game totals are as follows:

Justin's stats: 81 pts, 19 reb, 10 assists, 3 steals, 1 block. 29x50 fg, 14x21 3's, 9x10 ft. 109 mins. out of 120.
Teams record for week 2-1....3 non-conference games

Kyle Richardson was the other player with a week that was award worthy as well. In fact it's the 2nd straight week that Kyle could have and should have, received the SUNYAC weekly honor. Last week his 36 point, 15 rebound effort lost out to another players' 32 point night. I shook my head at that one because it was clear to me that Kyle's huge game was just as good as the weekly award winner.

Then came his 3 performances this week. This is what I wrote after his first 2 games:

"You would think that a night's work of 30 points and 18 rebounds along with an earlier game of another double-double might get that player a SUNYAC Player of the Week award. But for Kyle Richardson his big game Friday night to lead all the SUNYAC players might not be enough. On Tuesday he put up 15 points  and 12 rebounds against St. Lawrence in a 77-65 Cardinal victory and factor that with Friday night's output and that should get you some League recognition. Cards are 2-0 in those 2 games."

This is what I wrote after his 3rd game . "On Saturday afternoon Kyle continued his outstanding week as Plattburgh traveled to Oneonta and came away with an 85-67 road win over the Red Dragons, which left the Cardinals tied with those other Red Dragons from Cortland atop the SUNYAC standings with a 2-0 record. Plattsburgh finished the week with a record of 3-0 to improve to 4-1 overall.  Kyle's stat line for the Oneonta game was 22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists. 3 steals and 2 blocks. He was 9x15 from the field and 4x7 from the line in 31 minutes."

Here's Kyle's 3 game totals:

Kyle's stat's: 67 pts, 39 reb, 7 assists, 7 steals, 6 blocks. 25x45 fg, 2x7 3's, 15x23 ft. 105 mins. out of 120.
Teams record for week 3-0....2 conference games.

This was my summary:

Justin has 14 more points than Kyle. Kyle has 20 more rebounds than Justin. Justin leads in assists, while Kyle leads in steals and blocks. I was told the record of the team in those game would be the tiebreaker

Trying to pick one of these weekly performances over the other requires the wisdom of Solomon. However I was told by a very reliable source that in the case of 2 very good performances, the tiebreaker was the record of the player's team. Last week Kyle's big 36 point, 15 rebound effort, took place as the team was losing their game. The Buffalo State player that won the weekly award, had his 32 point night as the Bengals were winning their game against Hobart. He got the weekly award. So this week the Cardinals go 3-0, and win 2 conference games. The Knights go 2-1 and all 3 games are non-conference affairs. That should tilt the scales in Kyle's direction this week, shouldn't it? Apparently not. He lost the award when his team lost and he lost the award when his team goes undefeated and claims 1st place in the conference. I'm still trying to wrap my head around that.  ???  :o

Let's get one thing straight. I'm in no way trying to belittle the record breaking effort that Kevin Marmolejos had last week or Justin Ringen put up this week. They both deserved to win a Player of the Week award. Kyle Richardson deserved to win the award in back to back weeks and still has nothing from the YAC to show for his efforts.

So it's obvious to me that no one at SUNYAC headquarters has the wisdom of Solomon. When the biblical king was faced with a decision that involved an extremely difficult choice, we know his decision involved sharing. That decision, ultimately led to solving his conundrum. The wise decision here also involved sharing, which should have been Co-Players of the Week.

So for the 2nd week in a row the magicman's Player of the Week Award is a joint affair with Kyle Richardson and Justin Ringen winning the weekly prize. Great efforts on the part of both players and I hope they have a few more of those stashed in the bank, that they will be able to draw upon as needed. Congratulations guys.

Note to Kyle and Justin... the magicman's weekly award is much more prestigious than the SUNYAC's weekly award. Just ask him the next time you see him and he will explain why!  ;D

More Final Scores from December 5th

Cortland State 70  @  Fredonia State 46

As jdex stated, this game wasn't as close as the final score indicates. Red Dragons had no letdowns in this game and the Blue Devils were never in this one. I had this as an 82-69 final and the 82 by Cortland was well within reach. After doubling Fredonia's score at 64-32 the Cortland coaching staff, took their foot off the gas for the final 9:44 of this game and only scored 6 points the rest of the way. The bench was emptied early and 12 players broke into the scoring column.

Freds also with 12 men in the scoring column but no one with more than 8 points. Overtime loss against the Lakers the day before may have had residual results.

Cortland improves to 5-1 (2-0 Yac)and is tied with Plattsburgh for the lead in the conference standings after the first weekend of inter-league  play. The Red Dragons will be back in action on Wednesday at 7:30 when they host Elmira.

Fredonia is 1-7 (0-2) and will not play again  until after the new year.

Oswego State 56  @  Buffalo State 66

This one was another exciting ballgame in the Sports Arena that was a back and forth affair. I had the Bengals winning this game by an 78-74 final but both teams had trouble putting the ball in the hoop and my projected totals were a distant memory when the halftime score was only 32-23. Happy with the win however after the Bengals dropped the game on Friday.

The Lakers erased an early 5 point Bengal lead and halfway through the first period finally got a nose in front at 15-14 with 9 minutes to go in the half. Oswego slowly expanded their advantage and eventually gained their largest margin at 32-21 on a 3 pointer by Matt Crockett with 1 minute to go.  Buff State's Lovell Smith hit a jumper to get it back to single digits at the break.

The Bengals needed to cut into the Laker lead out of the break and with contributions from the entire starting
five, they slowly gained ground, until Lovell Smith's layup with 9:27 left to play, finally brought them back in front at 42-41. It was their first lead since the 9 minute mark of the first period. The starting five during that stretch had 5, 4, 4, 3 and 3 points. The game remained  a single possession contest until tied at 47, Nico McLean got loose inside for a layup and after Oswego missed inside on their end, McLean came down and made a jumper to make it 51-47 with 3:48 to go. Oswego made 1 of 2 from the line and Smith hit a jumper for the Bengals. The Lakers misfired again and Smith responded with a tip in off an offensive rebound. That gave the big cats  the cushion they were looking for and up by 7 with 2:15 to play the Bengals just had to make their free throws down the stretch. They hit 5 of 6 from the line to close out the Lakers.

Jordan Chateau just missed a double-double, with his game high 22 points and 9 rebounds on 9x14 shooting. Lovell Smith did get a double-double with 17 points and the top rebounding effort of 11 boards. He added 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. Mike Henry also missed a double-double by a single point as he had 9 points and 10 boards. Nico McLean added 9 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Jordan Glover had 8 points and 4 steals as well.

Oswego was led by Walter Sampson's 18 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds. Brian Sortino had 12 points, while Kyle Covley and Keith Tyson tossed in 8 points each. Tyson also had 8 rebounds.

The Lakers suffer their first loss of the season and are now 7-1 (1-1 YAC). They will host Cazenovia on Friday December 11th at 7:30 PM in their final contest of 2015.

Buffalo State is now 4-2 (1-1) and will return to action on Saturday 12-12 when they host the Alfred Saxons at 2:00 PM.

Updating the SUNYAC non-conference record of all games through December 5th.

SUNYAC record vs Non-Conference opponents 28-20   (includes 3 games against non-DIII teams. Buff State has 1 win and 1 loss against 2 schools that are not members of the NCAA, Geneseo has 1 loss against Roberts Wesleyan that won't count )

SUNYAC record vs Non-Conference NCAA DIII Teams     27-18  (Top 7 schools are 25-4. Bottom 3 schools are 2-14)

magicman's predictions all games (includes conference games)    43-13 (76.7%)
SUNYAC games         6-2
