The game between Buffalo State and New Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon, that resulted in a double overtime win for the Bengals, set an NCAA record for total free throws in an NCAA Division III game. The whistle happy zebras called a total of 73 fouls in the contest that resulted in a record 112 free throws being taken and resulted in 8 players, 4 from each team taking an early seat. The refs managed to foul out 3 of the Bengals starting 5 players as well as their 1st big man off the bench. For the Gothic Knights they lost 1 starter and 3 of their top 4 reserves. The fact that 3 of their reserves fouled out indicates just how many fouls were called. I can't remember the last time I watched a game where 3 bench players from one team fouled out.

In Monday's triple overtime game between Brockport and John Carroll there were 56 fouls called resulting in 78 free throws. Both the number of fouls and the number of free throws were considerably less than what occurred in the Buff State game, with one less overtime period.

Some officials just can't let the players play ball but have to interject themselves into the game far more than they should. There were an awful lot of cheap fouls called against both teams yesterday that were instances where the refs should have kept their whistles in hand instead of their mouth. I realize that because you have 3 separate game endings, because of the overtimes, that you will get a minor foul parade by the team trying to mount a come back on 3 occasions instead of one but there were plenty of fouls called before the teams were intentionally fouling that were simply officials trying to insert themselves into the game far too much. I hope today's game between Lehman and the Bengals has more of a flow to it than what took place yesterday.

2 things to add ( damn magic you beat me to the Ncaa record) to what magic has already stated!

A- Yesterday's refs were mixed bag. 1 ref early in the game told Bengal coaches, that complained about a push in the back vs Mike Henry, that "if we called every foul we'd have over 100 foul shots!"  I can't make this up folks. From coaches who I know and trust.  Magic knows them too! ;D

B- "Karma can be a bit-h!!! ". Right at the end of the 1st half I,and anyone in the gym, witnessed a VERY heated exchange between NJCU head coach Brown and the referees ( the black referee in particular).  "Heated" puts it mildly. The ref threaten Brown with a tech. Brown shouts out "i work for a living". Ref responds with a similar comment. Brown then says something about "writing " the ref up, and some other threatening stuff! The back and forth continued for what seemed like almost a min, but clearly both Brown and the aforementioned ref, weren't gonna send Xmas cards to each other next year. "Karma" you say??????
Karma = After Mike Henry hit the game tying 3 in the first OT,  NJCU quickly takes the ball out and a NJCU player was heading to the basket with the ball, for an uncontested layup for the game winner
when, out of nowhere, Mike Henry fouled, oops  :o "blocked", the NJCU players shot. The aforementioned ref was in position to make the call and he called nothing ( put emoticon for "whew" here).  A casual unassociated fan would have bet thier life that a foul would have been called there with less than a second in OT.  However "karma is a b----" and I believe that a certain ref called that play EXACTLY right.   ;)

Sad News for one of our Sunyac teams. Recently 3 players from the New Paltz team were in a bad car accident on the way to practice. 2 are out of the hospital but the 3rd is critical. Prayers up for all of the New Paltz team and families as they deal with this. Thier game vs Kean is canceled for Saturday. Take a moment fellas and reach out to whatever GOD you pray to for the New Paltz player, and teams, full recovery!

Well just  got back from the Land of Magic Tourney in Daytona Beach and watched my beloved Eagles for two days!!! Great time and great games. Bport had a thriller with Bridgewater State the first day winning 100-95 in triple OT! Bport missed the front end of two 1 and 1's and went 1 for 6 in final two minutes to set up these heroics. The Eagles were up 74-71 with 2 seconds left in regulation and Bridgewater kid tossed in a 25 footer with man in his face to force the 1st OT. The same guy did it again at the end of 1st from around 25 ft with man in face again. The Eagles finally knocked down some free throws to build a little cushion and win.

Less than 24 hours later they had their biggest test of the season. John Carroll is the real deal. Good guards(3 very good and 3 solid guards) and 6 bigs between 6'6 and 6'8 that can play. There top 4 bigs are long and aggressive. I was totally impressed with this squad. They push it up the floor and 10 players deep. I have seen final four teams in the past, and they are potentially a Final Four team. I know alot of other intangibles play into reaching that level, but they have a shot.

My beloved Eagles are a nice squad but JC at a different level. Keep an eye on them. I enjoyed being around the guys again and wish them the best in the SUNYAC--Make Some Noise--take care to the SUNY's

scooterman.....where in Daytona was the games played?   The Amherst WBB team went to the same Tourny.  The Nescac website listed the games in Orlando, but the Amherst website listed Daytona.
Was down in the area last winter.  Unfortunately, there were NO videos of any games...only stats..

Yeah I would have been VERY Impressed if they could have pulled the game off against JCU coming off a tiring game just the night before, when JCU didn't have to play.

I think the game was at Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University. No video as you said, which made following the games a headache.

I recall part of that school was damaged by a tornado in 2006, which happened to be a year I was in Daytona staying with my Aunt and Uncle! That's always my biggest memory of Daytona now...

Sorry to say I will miss the video of tonight's contest between Buffalo State and Lehman. A former All Conference SUNYAC player from Potsdam State by the name of Ted Bence, is paying a visit to the Plattsburgh area tonight and I will be meeting him at 5:30. Going to one of the local gin mills to greet him and a bunch of other friends as we attempt to win the weekly Trivia contest. The magicman's reputation at Trivia has resulted in him being drafted onto a friend's team. One day I hope to make an appearance on Jeopardy but for now I have to be content to beat the local barflies. I am not a drinker (my favorite beverage is Cherry Coke) so I don't frequent many of the local hangouts or pubs unless something special is going on. I actually don't play bar trivia that much because, in all fairness, I don't want to win all the prizes. ;D

So good luck to the Bengals tonight, take the thunder away from the Lehman Lightning. I hope when I return home tonight that I can pull up a box score along with this board and that a big smile will slowly cross my face....for more reasons than just the game. Certain posters that post here will know what that means by now...I hope. :D

Prediction on tonight's game to follow very shortly.

Bengalsrule,
Sorry to hear about this accident. If you get a chance PM me with more details and perhaps who was involved. My prayers will certainly go out to these young men, their families and the Hawks.

Wednesday December 30th

Just one game on tap for the SUNYAC today but it's a doozy and would be the featured game of the day if all 10 teams were in action.

Buffalo State  at Lehman        6:00 PM   Championship game of the Coaches vs Cancer Tournament

There should be plenty of excitement in The Apex on the Lehman Campus this evening when the Bengals hook up with the Lightning of Lehman College. Both of these teams were involved in close games yesterday and this one could be another barnburner.

Lehman now sports a 9-2 record that includes six teams with winning records. The Bengals with a 6-2 record have played teams with winning records in all but two instances and knocked off 2 unbeaten teams, Hobart and Oswego State along the way. The Bengals are just 3 points away from an undefeated season, themselves, having lost by a single point to Cortland and by 2 points to NAIA power, Point Park.

The oddsmakers have ranked Lehman at #96 in the country and Buffalo State is right behind them at #102.
They have made the Lightning a slim 2 point favorite in this game but I believe the Bengals have played a stronger schedule and will come through here, with another tournament championship to put in their trophy case. Buff State Assistant Coach, Kevin Glover, was right about that 10 game holiday tournament win streak the Bengals brought into this tournament. It now stands at 11 games and the Bengals are  looking for #12 today. It should be another fast paced, action packed game and I'm taking Buffalo State to win this one by an 89-83 final score. Go Bengals!

I missed this somehow. I had seen a public post by the coach of New Paltz on Facebook but he didn't mention specifics (obviously)

That's very sad and my thoughts are with the team, the injured player, and his family!

Will do ( info on the new Paltz particulars)

On a lighter note the attached is the write up that the NJCU website has up on yesterdays game!  If you, or anyone else on these boards, have ever seen a better one, I'll buy the next 2 subs!

P.S. Cherry coke is one of my favorite drinks of choice as well. I don't really drink much either, but will on occasion. Otherwise cherry coke is a great one. I like root beer too.

Meeting with my buddies at the bar didn't happen as Potsdam State buddy had to cancel. I was there with bells on but not my buddies. Forgot to check facebook page where the messages showed up with a change of plans. Just as well now I can catch the 2nd half.

Buffalo State leads Lehman 38-36 at the half.

Jordan Glover hits his 3rd 3 pointer of the half with 24 seconds left to enable the Bengals to head inti the locker room with a 2 point lead.

Closey contested 1st period that had the Bengals in front when they scored to make it 7-6 5 minutes inti the game until they lost the lead at 28-27 with 5 minutes to go.

There were 5 ties and 7 lead changes and neither team had more than a 4 point lead.

Jordan Glover leads the Bengals with 13 points and Kevin Marmolejos is next with 8 points. Those two have combined to go 5 for 7 from long distance. Lehman is only 1 for 9 from behind the arc. Gotta hope those percentages stay the same and don't even out in the next period.

Lehman was led by Chaun Miller with 10 points and 3 assists. Olando Minot has 8 points for the Lightning.

Bengals opening up a little daylight against Lehman as they now lead by a 56-46 double digit lead with 12:20 left to play in the game.

Buffalo State continues to lead by 10 points at 70-60 with 3:36 left to play.
