Zola, you make some valid points...but I again have to remind you that Geneseo has played almost half of their season without Kling and McDonnell.  I don't know the numbers, but that's taking somewhere around 20pts. out of your backcourt.  Will be interesting to see what happens, when those guys are back in the lineup.  Nice wins tonight for Bport, Geneseo, and Plattsburgh.  This weekend will be huge in helping to sort out the standings.

BBM

Plattsburgh beats Potsdam by 1 in double OT. Plattsburgh jumps to a double digit lead and Potsdam fights back. Anthony Williams has a huge game for Plattsburgh with 31 points. Potsdam misses a layup with 2 seconds left in the contest. Great effort by both teams.

SUNYAC Massey Ratings prior to games played on 1/23. Listed by Team, Rank, Strength of Schedule (based on 403 population)

Geneseo 63/111
Brockport 94/207
Plattsburg 159/201
Buff State 163/221
Oswego 183/261
Potsdam 238/234
New Paltz 247/296
SUNYIT 250/320
Oneonta 266/273
Cortland 290/226
Fredonia 342/288

Plattsburg (159) beats Potsdam (238) by 1 because Potsdam misses wide open layup within last 4 seconds of 2nd overtime. Well, league games, especially Bears - Cards, are always tough to predict, eh. Cards Williams and Bears Brown put on a show.

In non-league action, Utica (73) buried Oswego (183), as you would expect given their respective ratings, by 1 at home. FYI - Laker's starters Burridge, Downing, Roberson combine for 7-29 from the field. Still, Roberson a solid 4-6 from 3. Reuter (17) big off bench. Laker's 12/17 assists/TO ratio, 9 fewer boards. Bryant with fine 19 and 11 in 35 min for Pioneers.

Everyone is knocking Whitmore for playing a bunch of guys. Didn't he do that when they went to the Elite 8 and it was effective. He has always went deep with his rotation with the exception of last year because of injuries and suspensions. To knock Bport for fouling is crazy. The refs always seem to have it out for him and his squad. Just because they are quicker, stronger, and tougher then their opponents they get penalized. It is basically the same idea behind a big center setting a pick on a little guard, the guard falls down and it is automatically a foul even though the big man was there for 3 seconds.

It is pretty obvious that the SUNYAC is down this year. They lost a lot of good players like thebear said. It will get better because there are a lot of good players that are contributing who are freshmen and sophmores.

Just read the Plattsburgh-Potsdam box. Wow, it must have a been a great game. It must have come down to two things. The Cardinals went to the line 31 times and made 25 of them while the Bears went to the line 7 times and made 4. Only going to the line 7 times in a double overtime game, I don't know if I've ever seen or heard of that.

Another line is Potsdam's 28 turnovers. Not too many teams can win with 28 turnovers. What was funny about that stat was that they also had 31 assists to their 37 field goals. I don't know who does the stat keeping in the North Country but I highly doubt the Bears had that many assists. I'm sure thebear can confirm or deny that stat.

The Brockport Eagles hold Cortland's leading scorer Dave Maggiocomo scoreless. A big road win for the Eagles. Another solid effort from their second semester transfers Sherod Harris and Cantrel Parrish as they combine for 29 points.

The Knights of Geneseo get three double figure rebounders as Kitson, Spears, and Jeff Howe. Howe has a double double. I think he is their best big man but just doesn't perform consistently. It is interesting that Geneseo only really went 7 deep yesterday. Did they move Kitson to the three because it was only Howe and Sciera that got decent minutes off the bench. Does anyone know why Jay Wingate isn't playing for Buff St. Is he still not 100% from his knee injury.

An answer to your question Slickquick is that Plattsbugh's press hurt Potsdam and on the Plattsburgh steals many 2 on1 and 1 on 1 opportunities existed. Unfortunately for Potsdam, a foul was called on 98% of Plattsburgh's layup attempts. I give credit to the Plattsburgh guards as they went in, hurling their bodies at the defense and getting the call. They did a great job of "reading the officiating." Yes, you're right, that is quite a discrepency in F.T. attempts, isn't it?

bports

Slick  like you i am a bport fan and live and die with the eagles. To compare this years bench players to the elite 8 teams subs is not comparing apples to apples. That team had 2 or 3 players on there bench that would have started on this years team. A couple that come to mind are charlie croff who played behind alex smith and bob s who played behind medberry. The only player that may have started off this years team is sherod harris, and he would have had to play the 2 with hollis at the pt. I understand what whitmores style is but after 40 pf's in back to back games i think i would back off just a little bit. He hardly ever uses a zone but he did against hamilton around the 9 min mark of the 2nd half and the game tied. The result was like a 20-2 run for bport and game over. I just think he can be very slow and stubborn to change anything when he notices it is not working. I like him as a coach i just wish he would shake things up every so often.

slickyquick, I think playing aggressive favors bport, after a while the refs give up on calling the ticky tack fouls and the game turns in bports favor.  To say they dont hack tho is a reach, I played against almost all the bport guards this summer and yes they are very quick but they do hack like crazy and reach almost everytime.  You feel like you are gettin raped.

slickyquick

One thing I do remember in the first year Brockport went to the NCAAs, they played Geneseo in the semis and the Knights went to the line like 58 times (might be a little lower but not much), which I still believe a SUNYAC tourney record. So it isn't like that this has just happened. I don't believe that Whitmore tells his team to foul but when you play tough hard nosed D you will foul. If they make the NCAAs, their pressure will cause other teams a lot of problems just like Brockport teams from years past.

Bports, as far as getting 40 personal fouls in back to back games, I don't think you can play any different. I think the players should adjust slightly how they play but if I were Whitmore, I wouldn't tell them back down. One thing I also remember about the Golden Eagles of years past, they would slowly play more in the halfcourt as the season went on. They would grind it out a little more because that is what Geneseo led by Greco, LeMoyne, and Binger and Cortland led by Binger and Williams would force them to.

Another thing about these Golden Eagles is that the refs aren't quite use to seeing them on a consistent basis. They were use to Hollis, Perry, Mateo, and Masters grabbing and clawing their way to get steals. So, it could actually get really scary next year when the team develops even more.

thebear

Slicky quick - It was a great game except for the last three seconds, when the Bears missed a wide open "bunny" down by a point.  The crowd was ready to explode, & then - well you know the feeling.

Although I've been accused (back when I was keeping stats) of being the most liberal assist giver in history (I kept stats when Mike Deane averaged 10 a game for three years (805 all told in 80 games)), I would question 31 of 37 FG's being assisted.  Damon Brown scored a lot of his points on acrobatic drives into the lane, there were also more than a few breakaways in transition that should have been unassisted.  I'll look at the film when I get a chance.

What was amazing about the foul discrepancy is that neither team really had to foul.  Potsdam put in a 13-2 surge early in the second half that brought the game close and the second half & the OT's were relatively low scoring affairs after that.
Usually that kind of a foul discrepancy is related to one team fouling to put the other team on the line to get the ball back, but that really didn't happen.

Williams & Miller did a good job of initiating contact and getting the fouls called, while Potsdam had a lot of shots at the other end where FT's or "and one's" could have been called, but weren't.

Big win for the Cards, as with the teams only meeting once, gives them the head-to-head tie breaker over Potsdam.

The top 9 teams in this conference are so close that any one of them can win the conference tournament.  It will come down to who's playing well, and people lost to injuries.

As for Wingate, he only played in "garbage time" against Potsdam.  My guess is that he's still not fully recovered.  A sad ending to a player with so much physical talent, he really had NFL-class speed (9.7 100m) in his heyday.

Bears have a big home matchup vs. Oswego on Saturday, Bear Pride night with women, hockey & men all scheduled for Maxcy on Saturday night.
