Buffalo State 82  Oneonta State 73

Rumor has it that an assistant coach from Buffalo State was seen driving along the highway between Brockport and Buffalo looking for a black briefcase that contained the team's MOJO. It was also rumored that said briefcase, which was unmarked to avoid unnecessary attention, was inadvertently left behind by said assistant at a fast food stop, on their way back from the Brockport game on January 5th.

Not wanting to upset the other members of the coaching staff and the players on the Bengal team, the aforementioned assistant coach simply bought another lookalike briefcase, visited an out of town prestidigitator, to get some more MOJO, to put into the lookalike briefcase, and voila`...MOJO's back and no one's the wiser. Except fake MOJO doesn't cut it in the SUNYAC. The real Buffalo State MOJO contained remnants of the talents of past Bengal players from NBAer Randy Smith to recent Bengal superstars like Jake Simmons and Justin Mitchell, all safely stored in the MOJO case to be drawn upon by future Bengal teams as needed. That's the kind of stuff you can't put a price tag on. And you can't replace it by visiting an unknown, out of town, magicman. Even this magicman, with all my powers, couldn't have replaced the lost Buffalo State MOJO. I was able, however, once the said Buffalo State assistant coach called on me for help, (which he should have done immediately upon discovering the missing MOJO) look into my crystal ball and discover a clue as to the whereabouts of the lost MOJO briefcase. It has languished in the upstairs apartment of a part time worker from a Subway restaurant located just on the outskirts of Rochester. He found the briefcase in a stall inside a men's room at the Subway shop around 11 PM on the evening of Jan.5th. Thinking he had found a possible small fortune in unmarked bills that someone had left behind he put the briefcase in his car and brought it home. Unable to open the locked briefcase and not being a particularly educated person he has spent the past several weeks trying an assortment of keys to unlock his found "treasure trove". He contemplated breaking it open but having seen too many movies of exploding briefcases and afraid that this one also might be booby trapped, he has been patiently waiting for that magic key to turn up from all the various ones he has tried. His patience was wearing thin however, and the Buffalo State assistant coach, through clues provided by my crystal ball, was able to approach this individual just in time. He had made the decision that if the 2 keys he had purchased at a local pawn shop didn't open the case he was going to break it open by running over it with his car. The MOJO would have been damaged beyond repair had that occurred.  The coach was able to make a deal with him to buy back the missing briefcase. It really wasn't an expensive proposition for the coach as he only had to mention possible legal ramifications of failing to turn in found items to his supervisor at Subway. A couple of Andrew Jacksons and the MOJO was once again back where it belonged. And not a moment too soon, either. When the case showed up at halftime of the Buff State-Oneonta game, things didn't look too good for the Bengals.

The game started out with all the makings of a classic encounter as the teams fought through 4 ties and 5 lead changes through the first 10 minutes of play. With the Red Dragons down by a 19-18 score, Oneonta's Ian Schupp drained a 3 pointer that started an 11-0 run and gave the home team, a double digit 29-19 advantage, forcing the Bengals to take a time out. Oneonta would keep the pressure on and gained their largest lead of the half at 38-26 on another 3 pointer, this time by Grant Massaroni, followed by an inside move by Lawrence Coleman. Buffalo State countered with 5 points from Leon Moise, who cut the lead to 7 with his 2 free throws and 8 seconds on the clock. Oneonta's Jack Dignan buried a jumper at the buzzer however, to give the Red Dragons a 44-35 halftime edge.

The Buffalo State assistant coach had barely made his way into the Bengal's locker room, upon his return from Rochester with the missing MOJO briefcase, and had just enough time to squirrel it away in his locker, when the Bengals team thundered into the room. They were obviously not too happy with the way the previous 20 minutes of play had turned out. The coaching staff pointed out the problems on both ends of the floor, told the guys to set more screens and take good shots, and the assistant coach went over to one of the other assistants, who was temporarily in charge of the MOJO case...the fake MOJO case. I'll take that he said and after the team and staff returned to the gym, he, with a smile on his face, as big as the fabled cat that Alice ran into, tossd the fake MOJO case into an Oneonta dumpster out the back door and rejoined the team with the real, honest to goodness, black and orange, Randy Smith infused, MOJO. The coach was finally off the hook, and no one was the wiser. The stage was set.

Whatever it was that took place at halftime, the coaching staff's advice or the return of their MOJO, the Bengals, after a few minutes of trading baskets, began to slowly chip away at the Oneonta lead. A pair of 3 pointers by Bengals' Jordan Glover and Mike Henry, sandwiched a layup by the Red Dragons Jackson Zuvic to narrow the gap to a 5 point 51-46 Oneonta lead. Still down 54-51 with 14 minutes left, the Bengals got back to back layups from Nico McLean and Lovell Smith to give them their first lead since midway through the first half.

The cheers disappeared in a hurry though as the Red Dragons shot out to another 8 point lead and it took all of a minute and 16 seconds. Back to back jumpers by Ian Schupp, followed by a steal and layup by Mikey McElroy made it 60-55. A Bengal foul and a technical resulted in 3 Red Dragon free throws. Oneonta made them all and the place was rockin. The lead was 63-55 with 11:06 to play.

Plenty of time for the Bengals, a team who has had quite a few comebacks already this year, to do so again. And now they had their MOJO back. And comeback they did. A jumper by Lovell Smith was followed by a drive by Redell Freeman to cut the lead to 4. After Oneonta made 1 of 2 from the line, Jordan Glover buried a three ball and the deficit was 2 points and it was now officially a barnburner.

Two possessions later the Bengals' Ryniek Holloway scored inside and the score was tied at 64 with 7:24 to go. Oneonta tried to stop the bleeding with a 3 pointer that misfired and the Bengals came down, went inside to Mike Henry, who gave them the lead once again. The Red Dragons came up empty again on their possession and the Bengals went inside once more, this time to Nico McLean. Both teams missed numerous opportunities over the next 4 minutes of play. The Bengals failed to score a singe point and the Red Dragons weren't much better but they did go to the foul line and managed to hit 4 free throws in 6 attempts to knot the score at 68 with 2:33 left to play. The Bengals missed 4 shots committed 3 fouls and had a turnover, once they got that 4 point lead. Oneonta missed 2 shots and had a turnover in between 3 trips to the line.

After Oneonta tied the game from the line the Bengals' Lovell Smith hit a jumper for the lead and when Oneonta missed a three on their end, Nico McLean made it a 2 possession game with an inside move and layin. With 1:15 left to play the Red Dragons opted for another 3 point attempt and again had no luck. Smith was fouled and he made them both to boost the lead to 6.

So just when you think a lead is fairly safe, Ian Schupp hits a 3 pointer, and after a Bengal turnover, Schupp drains another one and the score is 74-73 with 20 seconds left. Oneonta fouls McLean immediately and he makes them both and this time Schupp can't pull off a third bomb. Jordan Glover is fouled and he makes a pair to put the game away. With the score 78-73 and only 9 seconds left Oneonta has run out of time. Jack Dignan throws up an errant 3 point attempt with 3 ticks left and Glover is fouled again, just before the buzzer sounds. A technical is also called and Glover ends the game making 4 free throws. I'd call that piling on, which made the final 82-73.

It's obvious that the return of the Bengals' MOJO was largely responsible for this victory. The Buff State team accomplished several things that they haven't done in a while. They won back to back game which they haven't done since right after they lost their MOJO. They won in Oneonta which they haven't done since December 2, 2011 and they made 12 straight shots in a row, 2 from the field and 10 from the the free throw line. I know damn well they haven't done that in a long, long time , so yeah getting their MOJO back, thanks to the magicman, was the real reason they came through tonight.

Jordan Glover broke out of his funk with a 5x10 effort from 3 point land, along with 6x6 from the line and captured game high scoring honors with 21 points. He also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

Nico McLean had a big game with a double-double of 18 points and a game high 10 rebounds. He also had 5 steals and 2 assists.

Lovell Smith had 15 points 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Leon Moise had 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Mike Henry had a solid all around game with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.

Buffalo State had a slight advantage in the rebounding battle grabbing 44 to 39 for Oneonta, but did have a substantial margin in offensive rebounds grabbing 18 boards on their own end to only 7 offensive rebounds for the Dragons. Oneonta actually outshot the Bengals from the field and from downtown, while Buff State won at the line and most decisively won the turnover battle. The Bengals came into this game averaging 15.9 turnovers a game. Tonight they had a season low 6 turnovers. The Red Dragons had 18. The Bengals got 21 points off turnovers, the Red Dragons got 11. The 10 points there and the 10 point differential in second chance points, because of the excellent job that the Bengals did on the offensive glass, account for the major reasons the Bengals won this game....and the return of their MOJO of course. ;D

Oneonta had 4 players hit double figures and sophomore Ian Schupp came off the bench to lead them in scoring with a career high of 19 points. He broke his previous career high of 16 points that he set last year while in an Oswego State uniform. Tonight he was 7x14 from the field and 3x5 from long distance.

Mikey McElroy, Jackson Zuvic and Lawrence Coleman all dropped in 12 points. Coleman had 6 rebounds, Zuvic had 5 and McElroy had 4. McElroy also had 3 assists, a block, a steal and now only needs 21 points to hit 1000 for his career. Grant Massroni had 8 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Kareem Williams had 8 rebounds to lead the team in that area.

The Bengals will travel down to New Paltz to take on the Hawks at 4:00 PM this afternoon . They improve to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in the YAC and sole possession of 5th place.

Oneonta will now take on Fredonia at 4:00 PM later today. They drop to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the YAC. They remain in 2nd place all by themselves, a half game ahead of idle Cortland. They fall a full 2 games behind idle Plattsburgh in the standings.

6 more games left this weekend that could alter the landscape considerably. I'm happy because the Bengals did my Cardinals a big favor Friday night. Regardless of how we fare this weekend, we will still be in first place by ourselves, come Monday morning. 8-)

Magicman...enjoyed your post!  Good grief you either are looking for a side job at SI :) and/ or have TOO much time on your hands?
Will the weather impact any of the games in your region?  There maybe impacts in the NE conferences.  Me, only immediate worry is power lost and therefore missing games online.
Keep warm and safe.

amh63,

We are extremely fortunate and have not received a single snowflake. The weatherman says the storm will miss us completely. Brockport State team was in Potsdam last night (90 miles away) and was in Plattsburgh with no problems a bit later. Looking forward to a good game against the Golden Eagles. It usually is. Glad you enjoyed the  story.

Saturday January 23  All 10 teams in action

Buffalo State  at  New Paltz State        4:00 PM

Their MOJO is back and the Bengals look to keep their new winning streak alive. The Hawks won't find any answers for their ailments this afternoon. The point spread favors the Bengals by 15, as they have won 8 of the last 10 meetings. Tonight should be more of the same...Buff State 88 New Paltz 74.

Cortland State  at  Oswego State        4:00 PM

This is always an exciting game when these 2 Central New York rivals hook up and tonight will be no different.
The teams split the series last year but the Lakers hold a 9-4 edge over the last 5 years.

Lakers are in unfamiliar territory at the present time in 8th place looking up. They may have found a big guy that everyone else will be looking up at. Does 6'10" Mykelle Krecko play an important role in tonight's game and the Lakers' future going forward? Or does he continue to get spot minutes and basically be a non-factor? Was his breakout game against Brockport a fluke? Or will  there be more performances like that forthcoming? Inquiring minds want to know. Lakers look to extend their short winning streak.

These Red Dragons look to bounce back from a 3 game week that saw them drop 2 of 3 in the YAC. Both games were tough losses, especially the last second heartbreaker to Geneseo. Cortland tied with those Knights for 3rd place at the moment, will invade Geneseo next Tuesday for the rematch.

The oddsmakers have made the Red Dragons a slight road favorite over the Lakers but I think that Oswego , in a need to win mode, will pull this one out at Laker Hall. Final score... Oswego 74 Cortland 71.

Fredonia State  at  Oneonta State        4:00 PM

Freds got lucky last night and escaped from new Paltz with a W. Tonight their luck runs out. Angry Red Dragons do not make  a gracious host and these Red Dragons are not happy. Losing at home for the 2nd time in 5 starts in the YAC generally does that. A loss tonight could drop Oneonta into 4th place, quite a tumble from where they are.

Fredonia is looking to win back to back games for the first time this year. They are also looking to move into a playoff spot. If they win and Brockport loses to Plattsburgh today they will be all alone in the 6th and final spot into the tournament.

The oddsmakers don't think that will happen though, and neither do I. They have made the Red Dragons a 15 point home favorite, which sounds about right. Oneonta takes this one 81-66.

Geneseo State  at  Potsdam State        5:30 PM

This game got pushed back a bit and will be played before the Women's game in a bit of an anomaly.
After the sad news from Geneseo over the weekend the Knights will probably be glad to put that behind them and get back to the business of qualifying for the YAC playoffs.

After an 0-2 start to their conference season, the Knights have responded with a 4 game winning streak to climb intoa tie for 3rd place with Cortland. A pair of wins this weekend could find them all alone in 2nd. With the Bears up first instead of the Cardinals, as originally scheduled, the Knights will get the benefit of that change, as they now will face Plattsburgh after the Cardinals will be forced to contend with a tough Brockport team.

Potsdam will look to get back on track...if not a winning track, then one a bit more competitive than they were last night against the Golden Eagles, who made short work of them in a first half blowout that made the 2nd anti-climatic. This team can play, but has trouble doing so for a full 60 minutes. One of these nights....

The oddsmakers have made the Knights  a 16 point favorite here and it's hard to find a reason to doubt that spread. Ringen and Decker and Co. are just too much. Geneseo comes backs strong and wins by an 85-66 final score.

Brockport State  at  Plattsburgh State        4:00 PM The Featured Game of the Day

One of the best rivalries in the conference is between these two teams and today's game will be no different than past barnburners. Plattsburgh is flying high with an undefeated conference record and no one has been better at bringing the Cardinals down to earth than the predatory Golden Eagles. These teams have played 12 times in the past 5 years and their record is 6-6. Plattsburgh holds a slight 11-8 edge over the past 9 years.

Brockport is holding down the 6th and final playoff spot with Fredonia hot on their heels. But it's the Lakers down in the 8th place spot that the Golden Eagles need to worry about. That team will be rising and threaten to knock one of the playoff contenders/pretenders out of the picture. The Eagles are more of a contender than a pretender and a win today would help that picture out considerably.

Can the Cardinals continue to play a well as they have during their current 8 game winning steak? We saw signs of a slip in the first half of the Potsdam game when they trailed the Bears by a whopping (for them) 12 points at the half. The Cards came out on fire however and doubled the Bears' 2nd half output to win going away. They need to play that way for an entire game if they want to be successful today against Brockport.

The oddsmakers have made the Cardinals a solid 7 point favorite at home in Memorial Hall. With everybody healthy, the Cards will have no excuses if they don't get the job done. I think they will as Brockport always seems to bring out their best....the Cards best that is...but Brockport always brings their best as well. That means two teams at their best....a hoops fans dream. Plattsburgh comes out on top by an 83-77 final.

Quality win followed by a horrible loss. Give the Hawks credit...they came to play. I wish I could say the same for my beloved BENGALS. After going 24-30 (80%) from the free throw line Friday night (vs Oneonta), we follow that up with 23- 34 (67.6%) vs New Paltz. Ditto for assists to turnovers. Friday night 13 assist with only 6 turnovers. Saturday?  14 turnovers with 16 assists.

Don't have too long for a pity party (in fact no time at all). Plattsburgh is next up on the BENGALS schedule. However there's one scene from last night that I'll never forget.

After the game ended last night I went downstairs to help console my BENGALS. Both teams, BENGALS and Hawks, meet in rooms about 30 feet apart. As I stood out side the BENGALS room visiting with the Buff State coaches, we could see the Hawks entering their room. 1 Hawk player stood at their door (holding it open) and advised everyone to wait for "This person" .."wait for that person". The last 1 who walked into their room was their assistant coach "Weary" or something like that. They then closed the door and let out what I can only describe as the most exuberant celebration that I have ever heard in my  years of following SUNYAC basketball. The noise was deafening and you could hear their shouts of joy throughout the hallways of the Hawk athletic complex. I've never heard anything quite that loud. Not in SUNYAC playoffs..not when Buff State won the Championship in 2011. Quite simply...it was the loudest post game locker room celebration that I have heard from a college locker room...EVER!

Before the game I was talking to a former Hawk assistant coach, Keith Sobel, about the atmosphere around campus since the unfortunate car accident of 3 of their players.  He told me that 1 of their players was still in a coma...and has been for quite some time. That player was being transferred to a new location. I learned that the New Paltz community still carries a lot of pain from what happened to those players, but specifically what the 1 player (who's name I wont mention) is still going through. Since that unfortunate accident, leading up to last nights game,  the Hawks had gone 0-5.

Something tells me that last night's win, for New Paltz, was about more than just basketball!!!!!

Sunday January 24th 1 game on tap

Geneseo State at Plattsburgh State  3:00 PM

The Knights can move into a 2nd place tie and put 4 teams all even in the loss column with a win today at Plattsburgh. The Cardinals hope to avoid their 1st losing streak of the season and continue to keep some distance from their closest pursuers.

The Cardinals will need to stop the high scoring tandem of Justin Ringen and John Decker. Last night they combined on 59 of the Knights 89 points against the Bears. Stop them, especially from the 3 point line, and you win, it's pretty simple. Plattsburgh looking to avoid a 2nd consecutive home loss as well.

Oddsmakesr have the Cards listed as a 5 point home favorite and it should be another close game in Memorial Hall. Last year, the Knights were able to win the game in Plattsburgh and the Cards returned the favor by winning in Geneseo. Cards have won 5 of the past 8 games and 9 of 14 over the past 6 years. Plattsburgh gets back on the winning track, today with an 84-80 win.

Go BENGALS!

It is more than basketball for that team. It has been for awhile.

I have known more details, but the family has not wanted people to know more details, thus I have been tight lipped. It is a very long recovery for that young man - plain and simple.

Very happy the team was at least as respectful as they could be (by the sound of what you are describing) in their celebration... which they deserve to do for so many reasons beyond the game.
