Magicman......Congrats!.......Do not know how you did it.....but that magic  stick go your team to the TOP spot in the first Regional rankings. 8-)
Await your analyses of the rankings :)

Ditto on the congrats to the Cards. 4 out of top 6 teams are 'Yac's too!  3 bids (at least) or bust!!!

The first set of Regional Rankings have been released and there really aren't any surprises to be found.

East – NCAA data sheet

1 Plattsburgh State 17-3 17-3
2 Rochester 14-5 14-6
3 SUNY Geneseo 14-4 14-5
4 Oswego State 14-6 14-6
5 SUNY Oneonta 13-7 13-7
6 St. John Fisher 15-5 15-5

The SUNYAC has been the strongest conference in the East Region this year and 4 teams have made the grade. No surprise that Plattsburgh State is #1 in the East. They have been the  dominant team in the dominant conference in the region. With a 12-1 record in the conference they could clinch the top seed as early as this Friday night depending on the results of other games. If they win both games this weekend they will clinch the regular season crown, regardless of what other teams do.

Rochester has strung together a recent 6 game winning streak or the top 4 teams would have been from the SUNYAC. They face a big game with NYU on Sunday

Last night's losses by both Geneseo and Oneonta mean that there will be wholesale changes next week when the new rankings are released.

Brockport State won last night and if they can get a pair of wins this weekend they could make a big move up the ladder. They possess the strongest SOS of any team in the East Region.

Rochester has twice as many losses as NYU yet they are #2 and NYU with a gaudy 17-3 record has such a weak SOS that they are left off.

Lancaster Bible ranked #15 by D3hoops Top 25 has the weakest SOS of any team in the East Region at .421. They have the best record in the East Region at 17-0 (19-0 overall) and yet aren't mentioned in the Regional Rankings. Kind of a crazy scenario if they were to lose in their conference tournament. They are obviously a very good team and probably merit their D3hoops ranking, or something very close to the #15 spot, but if they are unranked and lose the automatic bid, there's a good chance they will not get a Pool C bid.

These rankings are very close to what KnightSlappy had posted on Monday The only difference is he had 5 SUNYAC schools in the Rankings. He had Brockport after Geneseo and then Oswego in 5th and Oneonta in 6th. Fisher was in the 7th spot.

Well, we were going to see a lot of changes anyway because vRRO wasn't a factor this past week. That always shakes up the rankings.

Brockport has one major problem... they have taken a lot of losses. Assuming they are at-large team, meaning another loss, their SOS isn't going to help them that much.

Basically, LBC is getting screwed by their SOS... but maybe too much. To be honest, I can see a scenario where they aren't in the tournament (read the previous link).

Remember one thing, KnightSlappy isn't considering all the criteria. There are some avenues he isn't considering like common opponents and the like. He is going on some of the criteria, basically the hard data numbers. He would be the first to tell you that. :)

Nice article about Plattsburgh State on the front page of D3hoops. Rob Knox who writes the "Around the Nation" column featured the Cardinals in his latest column. Here's the link:

Friday February 12th    All ten teams in action

Geneseo State  at  New Paltz State        7:30 PM

The Knights are one of three teams with 5 losses, fighting for what looks to be the #2 seed in the conference tournament. Cortland and Brockport are the other two teams in the mix.  The Knights own the tiebreaker over Cortland by virtue of a season sweep. However Brockport owns the tiebreaker over both the other two at the moment.

Geneseo can't afford to lose to a non-playoff team and the Hawks have been eliminated from postseason play. They did made a game of it when they met in Geneseo as the Knights only won by a slim 71-67 margin. The Hawks came from an 11 point halftime deficit to grab the lead with 6:39 left in the game. They were still up by 3 points at 61-58 with 4:21 to go, but back to back 3 pointers by Justin Ringen and Charlie Zaepfel put the Knights back in front. The Hawks' Nick Paquette tied the score with a 3 pointer but John Decker hit a pair of free throws and then buried another 3 pointer to give the Knights a 5 point lead with just seconds left as they escaped with a win.

I don't think the Hawks will be able to match that effort tonight. Geneseo is favored by 11 points and that's pretty close to my forecast on this one. Geneseo 80 New Paltz 69.

Buffalo State  at  Fredonia State        7:30 PM

The Bengals are on life support. They managed to keep their playoff hopes alive with a big win at Geneseo on Tuesday night, but they are still on the outside looking in. Even if they win tonight, and the two teams directly  in front of them, Oneonta and Oswego, both lose, they will still be in 7th place. Needless to say (but I'll say it anyway) tonight is another must win situation for the Bengals.

I'm not sure if Fredonia is officially eliminated from playoff contention, but as far as I'm concerned they are. So they are really playing for pride and with no pressure on expectations, other than to finish the year on a positive note. Buffalo State needs to play as hard against this team, as they would if they were playing for 1st place in the YAC. A letdown of any kind here could be fatal.

The oddsmakers have made the Bengals an 11 point favorite despite the fact that the Blue Devils only lost by 8 points when they met in the Queen City. Bengals haven't blown out very many teams this year, so I think that Fredonia can keep this one from becoming a laugher. Buffalo State wins by an 83-75 final score.

Brockport State  at  Oneonta State        7:30 PM  Co-Featured Game of the Day

Picking this game will be a difficult task. Both teams need a win here in the worst way, to keep their hopes alive for a #2 seed. The Red Dragons won the first meeting in Brockport with a come from behind 2nd half.

The Golden Eagles are playing some of their best ball of the season with wins in 5 of their last 6 games, including a win at Plattsburgh. They are coming off double digit wins against Fredonia, Geneseo and Cortland. Impressive stuff.

Oneonta has lost 4 of their last 6 and hasn't beat a contender since that game against Brockport back on January 9th. Their last 4 wins have all been against the bottom 3 teams in the YAC.

The oddsmakers have favored the home team Dragons by a single point, but I'm thinking that the Golden Eagles won't want to be swept in the season series. I'm taking Brockport to keep their winning streak alive. Hoping to see Hamed Shamseldin in the lineup tonight for the Golden Eagles. He's missed the last 3 games and was playing hurt in the 2 games preceding those 3. Eagles have still been playing great without him. Brockport 77 Oneonta 74.

Oswego State  at  Potsdam   State     7:30 PM

The Lakers have made a big turnaround after their 1-4 conference start and are still in the hunt for a first round bye. Currently tied with Oneonta for 5th place in the standings, they can't afford to lose to the last place Bears with so much on the line.

Potsdam played the Lakers tough down in Oswego and were only down 70-66 with 3 minutes to go. Lakers Brian Sortino took matters into his own hands and scored 11 straight points for Oswego and they walked off the floor with an 81-72 win.

The point spread has the Lakers favored by a big 21 point margin. I think that may be a few too many. Lakers win 79-64.

Cortland State  at  Plattsburgh State        7:30 PM Co-Featured Game of the Day

Plattsburgh State is still flying high as the Cardinals stretch their latest unbeaten streak to 5 games and 13 of their last 14. With a win tonight and losses by Geneseo and Brockport the Cardinals could clinch the top seed in the conference with the right to host the final four.

Cortland, alone in 2nd place by a half game, is also playing some good ball as they have put together a 3 game winning streak. They would love to win this game as it could give them a possible tiebreaker edge down the road should that come into play.

The teams played a close contest at Cortland earlier that could have went either way. Plattsburgh was only up 4 points with 1:41 to play but the Cards' Ed Correa hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to hold off the Red Dragons and win by a 75-68 final score.  Plattsburgh held Cortland to a season worst 5 for 39 from 3 point land in that game. I can't believe the Red Dragons will repeat that poor effort. Still, the Cardinals possess one of the best 3 point defenses in all of Division III so they will, once again, put a lot of pressure on Blair Estarfaa, JP Regan and company. The oddsmakers have made Plattsburgh a 6 point home favorite. I see this game as a higher scoring affair than the one in Cortland. Plattsburgh wins it 86-78.

All-Time

Everyone in action tonight as the regular season is winding down.
7 teams fighting for 6 playoff spots.
Who is Going to Finish Strong?

Geneseo Runs away from New Paltz

Oswego does the same to Potsdam

Plattsburgh beats up on Cortland

Buffalo State a double digit winner over Fredonia

What Oneonta team shows up tonight? After a very lackluster performance against their rival Cortland on Tuesday night at a packed Dewar Arena will the Red Dragons get it together against Brockport. I certainly hope so. Coach Dunn would like nothing better than to beat Oneonta at home. I'm picking Oneonta in a low scoring game. 64-58

Enjoy the Craziness
