Cortland 72, Oswego 61, final

RDragons by 14 at 6:30 on B. Estarfaa drive. Dribble penetration big part of revived Corts attack. JP Reagan off the bench for 22 pts. Estarfaa nets 17 pts with 7 rebs, 4 assts;  C. Joseph 11 pts, 7 rebs. A. Rawa with 19 pts(7x14fg, 4x7 3s) for Lakers. M. Krecko with 14 pts and 13 rebs in 17 minutes. Tough night for B. Sortino ....8 pts(3x13fg, 1x7 3s), 4 rebs.

Interesting on 6-10 jr. Krecko. Strikes for six points out of the gate and then sits a good deal. Takes hard fall in second half and sits. Returns and brings OSt within 65-57 at three minutes. Reagan fouls out K. Covley at 2:39, lands two FTs and hosts begin feeling it. Krecko tallies inside and makes a FT at 1:20 to make it 69-61. Dragon J. Morales FT at 0:54 and Estarfaa driving hoop post final Cortland marks

Corts hit fg at 47 percent, Oswego 37 percent and 6x30 3s. Cortland depth appears evident. Every button T. Span pushes seems to click. Reserve M. Kelly leaves his imprint, again. Dragon bench outpoints guests 36-2 as Cortland sweeps regular season series and snaps six game Oswego win streak

Plattsburgh up 1 with 30 seconds to go 70-69. Plattsburgh to inbound the ball after a time out.  Port fouls Kyle Richardson who makes them both. Brockport hits a 3 pointer from Clifton Lyerly to tie the game with 11 seconds to go.  Plattsburgh takes a time out and gives the ball to Ed Correa. He takes a 3 pointer that misses and after a  scramble for the rebound Xavier Thomas gets it and puts it up and in with 2 seconds to go. Port takes a time out and inbounds the ball and throws up a long heave that misses the mark with a second to go. The Cards grab it, and Richardson is fouled again. He makes them both and Plattsburgh wins the game 76-72.

magicman

Geneseo hangs on to beat a pesky Potsdam team by a final score of 85-77

Buffalo State cruises over New Paltz 94-79. Bengals up by 36 at one point 70-34 before turning it over to the reserves.  They did win one for Bradley Doyley.

Plattsburgh State 76 Brockport State 72

I had the Cardinals winning this one by an 80-76 final score. I was 4 points off each team's total but had the margin of victory right on the money.

Plattsburgh did not want a repeat of the scenario that took place when these two teams hooked up in the 'Burgh. In that game they allowed the Golden Eagles to jump in front early and the Cardinals were playing catch up all night long. They trailed by 12 points and went into the half down by 10. On Friday night it was a different story. Both teams came out firing and the initial 8 minutes of play featured 5 ties and 8 lead changes as the teams took turns trying to get an edge. Finally it was Plattsburgh, down 17-13 who put together a run of 12 straight points, to grab an 8 point lead at 25-17. Jon Patron started it off with 2 inside baskets, with a free throw added on on the 2nd one. Chris Middleton got into the act as he threw one down off a fast break and Mr. Reliable, Kyle Richardson, scored inside with a layup and outside with a long range bomb. Plattsburgh would maintain the lead for the rest of the period but Port would twice cut it to a single possession 3 point lead, the last time coming at the 6:20 mark on consecutive layups by Cordell Torres. A pair of free throws and a 3 pointer by Eli Bryant gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the half at 40-30 with 3:38 to go. The Eagles got it back to single digits on a putback by Ismael Pierre but Richardson rebounded a missed Plattsburgh field goal with 2 seconds on the clock and beat the buzzer with a short jumper to head into the break with the Cards up, 46-36. Richardson had 13 points in the period and hauled in 6 rebounds to be well on his way toward another double-double.

Brockport cut into that lead at the start of the 2nd half and quickly got it to 7 points but 3 straight inside baskets by Xavier Thomas, Jon Patron and Richardson boosted Plattsburgh to the largest lead of the night at 53-40 with 17:14 remaining. All that did was fire up the Eagles as they reeled off 9 points in a row to tighten the game up and make it 53-49. Plattsburgh continued to stay in front by a 2 possession margin over the next 4 minutes of play and when Brockport finally got within 2 points, the Cardinals shot back in front by 8 points, on a resounding dunk by the X-Man, Thomas, that the announcer said belonged on ESPN's Top Ten highlights. Thirty seconds later Ed Correa hit from downtown and the lead was 68-60 with 4:25 left in the game.

Somehow I knew this one was far from over and sure enough the Cardinals developed a bad case of the givitoyas and handed the ball to the Eagles 4 times in their next 8 possessions. They also missed from the field on 3 of those trips down the floor and only a pair of free throws by Kyle Richardson had them adding to their point total. Brockport scored on 4 of their 8 possessions, including a 3 pointer by Devonn Gavin, and when Levi Pace got an offensive rebound and a layin the Eagles were within a point at 70-69 and there was 1:07 left to play. That minute and seven seconds felt like it took an hour as both teams called numerous time outs...a total of 6 in all... as they each misfired on their ensuing possession. First it was the Cardinals who failed to score and then Brockport, with a chance to take the lead for the first time since midway in the 1st half, came up empty with 35 seconds to go. Jon Patron got that all important rebound for the Cardinals and they called a  timeout to set things up.

When Plattsburgh inbounded the ball after that time out, Brockport wasted little time and fouled Kyle Richardson who calmly made them both to put the Cards up by 3. I knew the Golden Eagles would go for the tie by attempting a 3 pointer and sure enough with 17 seconds left Hamed Shamseldin took the shot. He missed it but the Eagles got the offensive rebound from Devonn Gavin. I'm yelling at my computer, foul him, foul him, but too late, the ball goes to Clifton Lyerly and the camera angle is perfect, as I watched a nothing but net 3 ball, that ties the score with 11 seconds left. Plattsburgh took a time out and put the ball in the hands of Ed Correa. I know what's coming next and it won't be a pass, as Correa takes the 3 point shot with just a few seconds left. He misses and after a scramble for the rebound XavierThomas grabs it and puts it back, in with 2 seconds to go. Port takes a time out, then inbounds the ball and throws up a long heave that is intercepted by Richardson with a second to go. Richardson is fouled again and hits them both, making the final score 76-72.

I'm pretty sure that my huge exclamation of relief as the X-Man made that basket to put us in front was heard half way around the world. I know Mrs. magicman was lifted about 3 feet out of her chair when I let loose.

Plattsburgh got double figures from the 5 players that have been scoring in double digits and it's amazing how close to their averages they were.

Kyle Richardson was the game's high scorer with 21 points (6x12 fg, 1x2 3's, 8x8 ft) and also grabbed a game high 11 rebounds, 5 of them on the offensive end. It was Kyle's 12th double-double of the season, which leads the SUNYAC by a large margin. He has also had 6 other games where he just missed a double-double by 1 or 2 rebounds often because Plattsburgh's lead was so large that Kyle was relaxing on the bench while the reserves took over. He added 2 blocks and 2 steals in 38 minutes of court time and his 6 big free throws near the end of the game were huge.  He has now made 18 consecutive free throws over his last 4 games. Richardson remains the leading candidate for the SUNYAC Player of the Year. Leading the Cardinals to the best record in the conference should be a primary factor when consideration for this award is voted upon.

Ed Correa had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Jon Patron scored 13 points despite being in foul trouble early and just missed a double-double with 9 rebounds. He entered the game in the first half and gave the Cards 8 big points in just 9 minutes, before leaving with 2 fouls for the rest of the period.

Xavier Thomas had a few problems hanging on to the ball, Friday and had a season high 6 turnovers, but being in the right place at the right time, has a way of making all those mistakes disappear. Corralling that rebound and scoring what proved to be the game winner restored the balance to the Force.  The X-Man has been on a roll lately with his array of high flying, big time dunks and he had 2 more electrifying jams in this game. He finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds, the 2nd game in a row he's just missed a double-double.

Eli Bryant came off the bench to run the point for the majority of the game tonight and scored his season average of 10 points. He added 4 rebounds,a steal and 1 assist.

The Golden Eagles got 20 points (9x16 fg, 2x4 3's 0x2 ft) 6 rebounds, 1 assist, and a steal from Clifton Lyerly. Olusola Adeniran had 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Was glad to see that Hamed Shamseldin is back in action and that he got 24 minutes of court time. He scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.  Levi Pace had 6 points, 6 boards, a block and a steal while Devonn Gavin had 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Matthew Smith added 5 points, 3 assists and a steal.

The Cardinals shot 38.5% from the field (25x65) to 44.4% (32x72) for Brockport. Neither team was at their best from long distance as the Cards were 4x18 (22.2%) and the Eagles were 5x22 (22.7%). Plattsburgh was the clear winner at the stripe as they were 22x28 (78.6%) while Brockport only went to the line 5 times making 3 free throws (60%). Plattsburgh was fouled in the act of shooting much more than Brockport was and it proved to be a telling statistic. The Cardinals also had their 4th best night from the line that they have had all year.

Plattsburgh won the battle of the boards by a 48-36 margin but committed their 3rd highest turnover total of the season with 20 giveaways. Brockport  had 14 turnovers.

Plattsburgh improves to 20-4 overall as the Cardinals hit the magic 20 win mark for the 6th time in the 13 seasons that Coach Tom Curle has been the head of the program. Curle and the Cardinals are shooting for their 7th trip to the NCAA tournament in those 13 years, more than any other college in the East Region during that span. Plattsburgh's conference record is now 15-2.

The Cardinals will end their regular season today, with a 4:00 PM game  at Geneseo State. The Knights, now 17-7 overall, and 11-6 in the YAC, stand a half game behind 12-6 Cortland in the battle for the 2nd seed. A Geneseo win will give them the 2nd seed since they hold the tiebreaker over Cortland by virtue of a season sweep against the Red Dragons.

Cortland has completed their regular season and all eyes will be on this game as they will be rooting for Plattsburgh like there's no tomorrow. If the Cards win, Cortland automatically advances to the semifinals next Friday in the 'Burgh. If Geneseo wins, then Cortland will be the 3rd seed, host a quarterfinal game and play the winner of the Oneonta-Buffalo State game.
